Sonic the Hedgehog

The history of, downfall, and triumph return.

See the difference?

Yes, another article about the blue hedgehog, but this article follows a much more serious side in this hedgehog's lifespan; the people behind him. Though really, it mostly follows his good and bad games.

Before i start off, i would like to point out that this hedgehog has been in my life since 2001 when i first played his sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, at my friend's house. Since then, i was hooked and would eventually buy the Sonic Adventure series of games, though i would stop after that as his future games blew, though we will get to that in a little bit.

Starting off, i would like to point out the glory years in this hedgehog's lifespan. I will not go on to talk about every game he was in, but i will talk about one game of each series.

Sonic Technical Institute (1990-1998)

These were the guys behind the good Sonic the Hedgehog games. For those who were born during Sonic Adventure onward, you don't know what your missing. Sonic Technical Institute failed to make a 3D game which resulted in its shutdown, but we'll get to that in a little bit. Lets talk about one of their creations.

Sonic Spinball (1993)

Ah, yes, Sonic Spinball. Truly one of my favorites for its catchy music and gameplay, though to be honest, i stopped playing after the first level as the game got more hard and less fun after Toxic Caves. This game was very addictive and you could play it for at least three hours before you got bored of losing a lot (as this was a very difficult game). Though if your an expert at it, then this is the Sonic game for you. This game wasn't exactly on the speedy side of the series, as Sonic mostly bounced around a lot and barely did any running. He still had the spindash also, though it wasn't exactly very useful (other than to glitch up the game). You could not run and jump at the same time, as when you were building up running speed and attempted to jump, Sonic would just jump in the same area where the button was pressed, and wouldn't go any farther. Its like trying to jump over a hurdle. Just as you have all that speed built up and finally jump, your body just stops moving and you find yourself going higher, but not moving over the hurdle. Overall, this game is very good, and would be a good edition to any gamers collection.

Sonic X-Treme (1994-1996)

Here is where Sonic Technical Institute went wrong; Sonic X-Treme. This game suffered so many delays that it resulted in the people working on the game getting sick. Not sick as in of working, but sick as in sick, ill, diseased. The people almost died trying to finish this game. Though from the leaked footage shown in 2006, this game looked very promising. Too bad it never made daylight.

Sega Studio USA (1999-2008)
This is the company that began making the bad games in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The worst part of it; the redesign of our favorite hedgehog, though i will talk about that later.

Sonic Adventure (1998)

Beginning with this game, the hedgehog's design changes and he enters into the 3D line of gaming. Well this game was actually pretty good for a fresh start in the hedgehog's life after his original team nearly died, it was very fast paced as well, almost to that of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games from 1991-1994.

Sonic Heroes (2003)

Here is where the hedgehog met his downfall. Sonic Heroes, a game that introduced new gameplay elements that would ruin the fast paced era of our beloved hedgehog, and would result in him entering a line of weird games that aren't really fast at all. After this game, other Sonic games came out that were not even remotely related to speed and agility, the hedgehog's main features. I would talk more about this game, but it was just plain terrible.

Sonic Generations (2011)

After eight years of disappointment, Sonic Team Japan alone (and thank goodness for that, as Sega Studios USA might have ruined it if they hadn't closed down) created this masterpiece called Sonic Generations. For the first time in ten years, the hedgehog was fast and furious once more. Sonic's original design finally made his 3D debut in this game as well, and the hedgehog finally had a good game for the first time since Sonic Adventure 2.

The Designs

Just a little short commentary on Sonic's designs. As shown in the picture above, Sonic got green eyes, gained a little height and lost his chubbiness as well. He got longer ears and his spiky hair became a part of his body (well in his original design it looked like as though he had blue hair if looked at real closely). His shoes gained an accessory, yellow rings, that were on the sides. The most noticeable change to me was his nose, as it looked more pointy and that just bugged me, though at the same time it also humored me as it made him look more funnier. On a final note, Sonic's original look is my favorite just because of how retro it looks. It also looks more detailed to me, but you guys can decide on that.

That about wraps it up for Sonic the Hedgehog's history. Sonic will always be my second favorite SEGA character.

You are correct, Sonics 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles all came first but I think we get yumemaxx's point. They are right in that we were used to Sonic being a 2D side scroller. Once Sonic Adventure came out and introduced the blue blurr to the realm of 360 degree full roaming 3D platforming, we had to get a feel for it all over again, and I know alot of people, Sonic fans alike, got po'ed by it. Also the story lines became a bit more complicated and some felt that there were to many playable characters all of a sudden. And lets face it, Sonic's adventures haven't really been all that great lately but at least Sega and Sonic Team, or whoever they are partnered with now, have tryed. That's really all we could ask. At least Sonic Colors was pretty good and Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is shaping up so far. Here's to a hopefully bright future for Sonic.

I've not played a sonic game since sonic Heroes..as i was upset that they replaced the cast from the sonic adventure series for the sonic x voice actors without notice. I boycotted. SX voices just sounded like cheap imitators. sounds like i've not missed much..though I am tempted to give things a shot again...

    @yumemaxx

correct me if i'm wrong, but sonic 2 came BEFORE sonic CD

SimonTheGoaler: "I personally believe that the series hasn't been any good since Sonic CD"

Wha-? You are aware that Sonic CD came BEFORE Sonic 2, 3 and Knuckles, right?

I agree though that I wouldn't call Generations a "masterpiece". It is certainly a step in the right direction, though. Ironically enough, Generation's biggest selling point was the inclusion of the 2D Classic Sonic gameplay, and that ended up being the duller part of the game to me. Sonic Team has come very close to perfecting the Modern Sonic play style. I`d rather they stopped looking back so much and focused on refining what they have now.

Thanks Notshane. I don't mind Sonic's new look that much, infact I think he looks pretty cool. And kudos for mentioning the Sega Technical Institute, nice one! I also like your screen shot of the Sonic Generations title screen. I'm seriously concidering getting a used XBox 360 at my local Game Stop so I can finally play it and join the ranks with the other retrojunkers who have played it. Thumbs way up man.

Sonic Heroes wasn't that bad lol
SimonTheGoaler Posted 1 year 3 months ago
To call his return a "masterpiece" is kind of generous and subjective, but to each their own, I suppose. I personally believe that the series hasn't been any good since Sonic CD.

I used to have all Sonic games for Genesis on Sonic's Untimate Genesis Collection, and a modern Sonic games of Sonic '06, and Sonic Generations on my Playstation 3. If I was a kid that get me no smater and I'm totally dumb like Sonic games for Genesis, Game Gear, and Knuckles Chaotix for 32X. And, I have Sonic Jam, Sonic R, and Sonic 3D Blast for Saturn and Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, and Sonic Shuffle for Dreamcast is the best one along time ago.
Drahken Posted 1 year 3 months ago
Yeah, 3d blast is the one I had in mind. Lanyrinth is the gamegear version. Reportedly the GG version isn't as good, though I haven't played it much myself.
    Units1019 Posted 1 year 3 months ago
    @Drahken,

I think the game your talking about is Sonic 3D Blast. I ended up getting it for the Sega Saturn after Sonic Xtreme was canceled. I needed my Sonic fix. Wasn't a bad game at all.

@notshane: Did you try backpaging to the editor, clicking inside the editing textarea, and then hitting ctrl+z? I find that that often worked when I accidentally leave a page with an unfinished post.

Spinball was good, but (like many pinball based games), it got repetitive fast. I also liked the isometric "3d" one on genesis, chaos or labyrinth or whatever.

I never played most of the sonic games for disc based systems. The only such I've played are the 2006 sonic game for ps3 and sonic generations. The 2006 game can't even be counted as a sonic game, it's just a typical RPG town that you can't friggin find an exit to. Aside from starring sonic, it could have just as easily been "bob's RPG land" or some such.
Sonic generations was quite good. It's like the original games, enhanced.
darthmunk Posted 1 year 3 months ago
I wouldnt say sonic has a triumphant return really, sonic generations isnt THAAAT good. its good but its not like the best game. sonic 4 was pretty good too. they need to make a 2D sonic game without the modern sonic in it. that would be most excellent.
kelvmelv Posted 1 year 3 months ago
missed out on alot of sonic history there. Like the original sonic the hedgehog thru sonic and knuckles... the original game and the third and sonic and knuckles were made by sonic team. sega technical institute did the second one and of course xtreme which never happened. Sonic team did make sonic R for the saturn to spit in the faces of sega technical institute to show they could have made a sonic game on saturn if they had wanted to with no problem

I enjoyed Sonic Adventure (both 1 and 2) and feel the games get a bad rep for what came after.

Also gotta mention Sonic Colors. Such a darn good game.

I also don't know why Sonic's redesign is so panned. Could you imagine Sonic staying with the same look as Mario, Link and other mascots get new looks?
Hordak Alpha Posted 1 year 3 months ago
To me, in his newer design, Sonic looks like a stuck up douche bag. I prefer Sonic's classic look, personally. If it isn't broke, don't fix it I say.
    soc27cer Posted 1 year 3 months ago
Sonic kind-of fell apart in the transition from 2D to 3D. I could never get into any of the sonic games after the first Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, and now it seems like Sega uses the Sonic character to sell crappy games.
    randomuser2349 Posted 1 year 3 months ago
Have you played the Sonic Advance and Rush series? Those focus very much on speed.
Also, Sonic Heroes wasn't that bad in itself, but it was a shift from the signature speed. Though I do admit that after that the series aside from portables and compilations went downhill until Generations.
Benjanime Posted 1 year 3 months ago
i wasn't very fond of sonic adventure 2 and sonic heroes. i got a little far in sonic adventure 2, but the knuckles/rouge stages just didn't do it for me. it felt more like a chore rather than collecting, and to make matters worse, a late rouge stage has you getting three chaos emeralds in a base before a timer runs out, all while you're digging, opening doors and unlocking things just to try and find them all. i gave up soon after that. as for sonic heroes, well, not only is the voice work horrid, but i was starting to get tired of the new stage rank system
