'80s-'90s Non-Classic Cartoons

The TV shows people should remember more.

I know the logos above are mostly '90s but everyone seems to know them. Cartoons are something everyone seems to love. They're part of everyone's childhood. Every Saturday morning or after school we'd all watch them. Everyone grew up on shows like Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, or Popeye. Those are classics from before our time that will never die. Then more specifically to the semi-modern but still retro era, there's always Scooby-Doo, Inspector Gadget, Rugrats, and so much else. With the classics in mind, these are the easily forgotten gems of our childhood. The list is in order by year.

Muppet Babies (1984-1991)

This concept has been done before. This was basically the Rugrats of the '80s. The idea for this came from a scene in the Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) where Miss Piggy imagines what it would have been like to know Kermit as a baby. The premise of every episode was the muppets, as babies were always at the same daycare center. There was no mention of their parents and they were watched by Nanny. Her face was never shown and she seemed to be only a pair of striped stockings and shoes. The whole episodes were mostly based off of the babies' imaginations. It was truly creative and always entertaining. Also, here's the scene from the Muppets Take Manhattan that inspired this TV show.

Rude Dog and the Dweebs (1989)

This is probably the most short lived cartoon series ever. This was an American cartoon based off of a the Sun Sportswear clothing line. There was only one season with 13 episodes in it. The animation is abstract and colorful. The main character, Rude Dog is almost a gang-leader of a bunch of mutts. The storyline isn't the most creative thing ever but this show wasn't cancelled due to unpopularity. It was cancelled because there was a Bud Light advertising campaign at the same time which featured a bull terrier who looked similar to Rude Dog. This created a controversy and the show was cancelled after 13 episodes.

Beetle Juice (animated series 1989-1991)

Being an animated spin-off of a movie that wasn't for kids, this show was given low expectations. The quirky atmosphere and interesting characters allow it to exceed the expectations put on an animated spin-off. The only characters from the movie are Lydia, Beetle Juice (obviously), the sandworm, and sometimes Delia and Charles. The main premise was changed to simply being Lydia's adventures with Beetle Juice mostly in the niether world, where he lives. The reason why it was so short lived is pretty obvious judging by how weird the movie was. Anything based off of anything like it that works well would have to be just as delightfully weird.

Bobby's World (1990-1998)

Here's a show that runs off of one of the most abstract things ever, a little kid's imagination. This show is basically all about four-year-old Bobby's life and anything interesting that he can think of. The creator, Howie Mandel would also make live action appearances before or after each episode. Sometimes he'd talk to Bobby himself in his appearances. This makes more sense because Bobby was almost entirely based on his younger self and was also voiced by him. Besides the quirky orgin this show has beautifully abstract animation.

Pepper Ann (1997-2001)

Here's a show that was always entertaining in it's own quirky way. It had a premise very similar to Hey Arnold. I mean that in the sense of it simply being about the life of the main character. Every episode was different and it depended on how interesting the main characters were. The main character, Pepper Ann is just another middle school girl who's trying to find herself and has interesting friends, problems with school and parents. It's just a basic show to say the least. Either way it was always entertaining and it pulled off the basic plot line very well. In the intro she always finds something new under her desk everytime.

Angela Anaconda (1999-2002)

I know it's just barely retro but 1999 is still part of the '90s. This show was made with cut out animation and was well known for it's adult humor. Angela and her friends, Gina Lash, Gordy Reinhardt, and Jonny Abboti were always the less popular types and they hated the popular, preppy people like Nanette who gave them trouble. The characters in this show are almost all stereotypes but it's always entertaining. This show was cancelled for semi-obvious reasons. It would'ave been better if it was an adult show instead of a kid's show.

So here they are. I hope I brought nostalgic joy to someone here. I wish I could have another Saturday morning watching some of these. A bowl of waffle crisp would be nice too.

Great article. I used to watch them all except for Angela Anaconda. I hated her, ever since she was on Kablam! I only saw 2 episodes with her in it, & they were the worst Kablam! sketches of all time for me, even back then. When I saw a commercial for her own spinoff show, I was furious. The story & voices annoy me, but it is the animation that really sucks. I can't look at it without feeling pain.

how could I have forgotten the Busy World of Richard Scary??? I used to watch that all the time..................

Great Article, most people look at me crazy when I tell them about the Beetle Juice cartoon. I also remember some other underrated cartoons like "David the Gnome" and "The Busy World of Richard Scary". Good Times

I used to watch "Muppet Babies", "Beetlejuice", and "Bobby's World" all the time. Those shows were (and still are) great! Nice article!

    @The Ronin Identity:

YES!!! I remember Space Cats. NBC had come out with their new cartoon lineup which included Yo Yogi and some other stuff, including Space Cats. If I remember correctly, there were some live segments mixed in with the cartoon portions.

    @StayPuft1989:

I love your list. Only ones that I would change on my own person list would be Digimon (as I was never a big fan. More Pokemon kind of guy) and Lost Galaxy. I am going through a PR marathon right now on Netflix. I'm up to Lost Galaxy and finding it tough to get through. I also know I'm gonna have a tough time getting through Lightspeed Rescue as well. IMO, both shows are bookended with the far superior In Space and Time Force

I would kill for Muppet Babies to be released on DVD or Netflix would even do. A lot of shows don't make it past the eyes of nostalgia and are not enjoyable nowadays. I've seen a few episodes here and there in my adult years and they are still enjoyable.

I liked the article. It was entertaining. The last show you mentioned I am not aware of but the others I watched. Espcially BeetleJuice and MB. I can remember the saturday morning when BeetleJucie premiered. I liked it then but I bet it does not hold up to my adult mind. PepperAnne is a show that I watched right before I quit watching Saturday Morning Cartoons. I would have been embarressed if my friends knew I was watching it. Good Article.

Man, Pepper Ann has got to have on of the catchiest theme songs ever, its be stuck in my head ever since you wrote this article! LOL I'm not sure if I agree about some of these article not being classics, but still a great trip down memory lane. Nice job.

    92DreamMaster Posted 1 year 7 months ago
I didn't mean to say it was a copy. I just said it was very similar. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Still, I'm glad this article got mostly positive feedback!

We forget that cartoons and cartoon networks were still retro....and excellent--good--decent from 2000-2005. Just look at what we.....had left at that time ;_;. Toonami AND Adult Swim was STILL on top of their A-game at that time....building us a better cartoon/anime show, Kids' WB was still good-decent-tolerable until it had died in like 2008, Fox Kids' was at its' climax from 2000-2002 especially during their "anime invasion" era, Cartoon Network's last good year was in 2003, etc.

So I think it's long overdue on retrojunk.com, to at the 2000-2005 eras onto their nostalgic database, it wasn't just the 90's that was "retro" when compared to now.

"Rocko's Modern Life" helped establish a style and sound that "Rugrats" heavily used. And the music of Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) is unmistakably Nickelodeon. ò¿ó
jaygeebus Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Like Shemps said, this isn't a follow it was a trend setter. Rugrats came after so how could MB possibly be copying it? And of course the concept of my fav MB episode was copied by Family Guy, when they did a star wars parody.

    I liked Bobby's World.
    zedd93 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Radi0, you're absolutely right! That show kicked ass (along with Dink the Little Dinosaur). Did you know that Denver's theme was by Dale Schacker who also did the soundtrack for "Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs"?

Bobby's World was awesome as well :)
    Radi0 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
We need some love for Denver the Last Dinosaur!
Nightwatcher Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Sorry, I meant @ shemps1 not sheps. He is using a pic of Hulk Hogan for his avatar and I remember Hogan being Shep Ramsey in Suburban Commando so I had that in my head. Oops, pardon me.
Nightwatcher Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Another success DreamMaster. I used to watch most of these shows although, for a while there, I thought I was the only one who remembered Rude Dog. I'm glad to have found out otherwise. @ Sheps - Thanks, I was going to point that out but you just partially saved me the trouble. Yes, that's exactly why Muppet Babies hasn't been released on DVD yet. There has been an out cry for it for some time but it doesn't look good. Howie Mandel has expressed intrest in releasing Bobbies World also but that's not looking good either. By the way, Bobbie's World is not based on Howie Mandel's early life but rather that of Robert Diniro, hense Bobbie as in the Good Fella. "You talkin' ta me? You talkin' ta ME?!" Infact Bobbie borrowed that line in an episode once. Cool article, thanks for the fond memories. :)

I really liked BeetleJuice and Muppet Babies back then. For years I always wondered what Nanny looked like. Any adult characetr was never really shown from the waist up very much on Muppet Babies.

Does anyone remember the Movie Shelly Duvall's Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme??
kelvmelv Posted 1 year 7 months ago
anyone remember Count duckula? that cartoon doesnt get much love these days
Benjanime Posted 1 year 7 months ago
    @jango5277

you know everyone is entitled to their opinion, right? both of those shows came out around 1997 and they are indeed deemed "retro". here i thought you'd be a neat member for the forums AND for articles but apparently not
The Ronin Identity Posted 1 year 7 months ago
anyone remember space kats (not swat kats) or the short lived mother goose and grimm cartoon?
    jango52577 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Wow...Pepper Ann and Angela Anaconda are retro?? Gag!!!
    IowaGirl82 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Ha, I loved the Star Wars MB episodes. Gotta love copyright infringement!
Malbosia Posted 1 year 7 months ago
I liked Rude Dog and Beetlejuice but Angela anaconda was the worst show ever on tv.
    shemps1 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
OK, I have a couple of problems with the article. In your Muppet Babies paragraph you state that "this concept has been done before", which of course begs a comparison which you provide. Where you go wrong is with the comparison of Rugrats, which of course came after Muppet Babies. Talking about pre-MB then referencing a cartoon post-MB would be a bit confusing to the reader who doesn't know anything about these shows.

Also, to nitpick, you referred to MB as "the Rugrats of the 80's" when really it would be "the Rugrats were the Muppet Babies of the 90's" since MB came first. Again that's just a slight nitpick and nothing major.

On a personal note, aside from MB and Rude Dog I didn't watch any of these shows. I was 13 by the time Bobby's World came out and not a fan of Howie Mandel. I was getting to the age where I was losing interest in Saturday Morning Cartoons.

I believe the reason why MB has not found a wide-spread DVD release is due to licensing issues with the various movie clips they used.

Darn it! I was gonna do an article like this one, but you beat me to it.
chokeslam Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Bobby's World, Pepper Ann, Muppet Babies forgettable?!!! Bite your tongue.
    92DreamMaster Posted 1 year 7 months ago
@Old_School_JJ I agree about BeetleJuice. I never said the movie wasn't better than the cartoon. I just love both.
@Benjanime I almost wrote about that one. I'm a little young to vividly remember it and I couldn't find enough information or episodes. Still, I can appreciate!

I get the Muppet Babies song stuck in my head to this day.
    Old_school_JJ Posted 1 year 7 months ago
You must be new to Retrojunk or something, cause I hear people mention those shows quite a bit, expect for Rude Dog and the Dweebs. I hear people mention Muppet Babies a lot actually, still wanting a DVD release of the series. Bobby's World and Pepper Ann gets mentioned quite a bit as well and Pepper Ann even had a short cameo on "Mickey's House of Mouse." The thing about the BeetleJuice cartoon is that some people feel it's not true to the original movie and that's probably why it's a bit forgotten nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I liked the cartoon and movie as a kid, but now that I'm older, I have to agree, the movie is better and the cartoon isn't true to the movie.
Hoju Koolander Posted 1 year 7 months ago
I was a Muppet Babies devotee in my early years, I still have many VHS tapes filled with their adventures. The way they mixed in stock footage on that show made it so unique. Beetlejuice was a favorite as well, "iiiiit's showtime!"
Benjanime Posted 1 year 7 months ago
pepper ann to me was like the continuation of what nickelodeon's doug was. even though they don't compare quite well, they were both original for their time. you should also check out "the world of david the gnome". it aired from 1987 to 1993 and it's one of my favorite shows from my early childhood years
arikarinyukijima Posted 1 year 7 months ago
I thought pepper ann and angela were really good shows. I did like muppet babies as well, but I stopped watching it when I was 7.
    matt82 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
awesome memories I really didn't have to read it to see that lol but I read anyway
The Mysterious H Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Except for Rude Dog, these are all shows I watched all the time and loved. I'd hardly say Muppet Babies is under-remembered though.
