Nicktoons Anniversary

It has been 15 years and I feel like commemorating the birth of Nicktoons.

August 11, 1991 was a monumental date for Nickelodeon, with network-produced cartoons called “Nicktoons”. Doug, Rugrats, and The Ren and Stimpy Show made pop culture history and turned Nickelodeon into the First Kids Network. Almost everybody who was a kid in 1991 not living under a rock remembers where he/she was on this date. The premiere of “Nicktoons” was the moon-landing of the 90s for kids. Weekend Mornings would never be the same again.

Doug-The show about a pre-adolescent boy and his adventures in fictional Bluffington.

Doug was my role model at 8 years old in 1991. If it hadn't been for him, I would have been another Bart Simpson. He had no hair and always wore a green vest, white shirt, brown shorts, and red sneakers. What I remember about the show is that Doug wrote about recent events in his life in a diary in almost every episode, like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City or Doogie Howser from Doogie Howser M.D.
Doug had an active imagination, which usually helped to provide premises for the stories, å la Walter Mitty. He had alternate personalities such as Quailman and Smash Adams (an homage to James Bond).
The most unusual feature of the show was the various skin colors of each character, although most of which had “Caucasian Personalities”. There were characters that were black (Patti), white (Doug), blue (Skeeter), green (Roger), tan (Mayor White), and purple (Beebe).
Like every young man on the verge of adolescence, he dealt with issues such as first school dance, first crush (Patti Mayonnaise, which she never knows about), first kiss (Not from Patti, but from Beebe), and first pimple. Porkchop was great too in that he was a dog with the personality of a human.
My absolute favorite episode was the school picture day episode where Doug is shy about getting his picture taken because he doesn't like his big nose. That episode would have been more effective if he had tried to get plastic surgery and then realized the possible outcome of it. I really liked the message behind it which was about loving yourself for who you are, and that it's not what you are on the outside, but rather who you are on the inside.

When I was in junior high, I got teased a little about the size of my nose. Luckily, I never got a nose job, and I never will.

JUST SAY NO TO PLASTIC SURGERY

Doug was also the first cartoon (that I've seen anyways) to incorporate both Rock and Hip Hop music. In the school dance episode, one of my favorite quotes is when Roger, wearing a hammer costume, says “It's Hammertime.” An homage to M.C. Hammer.

Nickelodeon's Doug

Disney's Doug

The series lasted from 1991 to 1994 for Nickelodeon, but got picked up by Disney from 1996 to 1999. I don't think Disney's Doug wasn't very good. For one thing, Disney couldn't get Billy West to do the voices of Doug and Roger.

I would rate Doug in my top ten favorite cartoons of all time.

Tommy and Chuckie

Rugrats

The show about how young toddlers perceive life and the events around them.

I thought the idea of babies actually talking to eachother was a little far-fetched, but it was innovative and entertaining. As time moved on, the animation had progressed as well as the storylines and music. We even got to see a little bit of the babies' softer sides, including Angelica's, who had always been a bully them.
I never could figure out what breed of dog Spike was. Eventhough he had the build of a greyhound, I don't think he was that kind of dog because of his ears.

Spike the Dog

As far as I'm concerned, the creators of Rugrats were not racists, even though there were usually only white characters on the show. That had changed in the second season when the Carmichaels, an African-American family, entered the picture, including young Suzy.
Surprisingly, the show lasted for more than a decade. It didn't have the same effect on me that Doug did. My problem with Rugrats is that the show didn't focus on kids in my age group. That's not to say that it was not fun to watch, because it was.

The show spun off three hit movies and a show where the babies have grown up and become teenagers pre-teens, appropriately titled All Grown Up.

Ren and Stimpy- The show about an “Asthma Hound” Chihuahua and a rotund red cat with a large blue nose and no tail living together.

As a kid, I never picked up on any hidden sexual content or possible homo-erotic undertones. However, I understood most of the vulgarity of the show including booger jokes and flatulence. What struck me about this cartoon was that John K, the creator, was able to give cartoon antics an aesthetic quality. In other words, he could make something both insane and beautiful at the same time. I had also never heard jazz and classical music incorporated in cartoons the way it was in Ren and Stimpy.
It just seemed like after the episode “Stimpy's Invention” (the one with the Happy “Happy Joy Joy Song” in it), the show went downhill from there, especially when John K. was fired from Nickelodeon after missing so many deadlines. Despite its controversy, it lasted for four years and spun off the Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon, which didn't last very long.

All three of those were great shows.

I loved Doug. It wasn't the funniest show in the world, but it had it's funny moments, and it was entertaining for other reasons.

"Rugrats" was good, but after "Rugrats In Paris", it went from being one of the best Nicktoons, to one of the worsts.

"The Ren & Stimpy Show" was amazing. The best cartoon since the classic Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Popeye shorts. It went downhill a little when John K. was fired, but it was still good, just not quite as good as it was. As you can see Ren & Stimpy are my avatar.

Great article. It would've been a little better if you talked about "Rocko's Modern Life", and "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" thought, because I felt this article was a little bit too short. But it was good anyway.

OK, I wasn't born in '91 so I missed the big premier of Nicktoons. *cries* But I have seen all three of these shows, because they still ran reruns, and Ren and Stimpy was brought back to Nickelodeon for a short while around 2001. They are all great, but Ren and Stimpy is really disgusting sometimes. Oh yeah, Patti Mayonaise wasn't the same color as Doug, and she wasn't black either. She was orange.
    j2datbeezy Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Yea I loved your article. The only thing is that Patti Mayonaise wasn't black ever in the show. She was the same color as Doug.

Three hit movies for Rugrats? At least the third was NOT a hit movie! That's for sure. Rugrats jumped the shark in the late 90s, way before the third movie was released.

Ren & Stimpy and Doug were freakin' fantastic shows. And they still are now.
MusicPanda Posted 5 years 10 months ago
I remember those shows as a kid espcially Rugrats, though I hated it when they made all grown up, it ruined my childhood :[

I agree with your semtiments on the Nick Doug vs. Disney doug. Disney Doug sucked!
MeerkatChick Posted 6 years 2 months ago
In the Rugrat episode where Spike the dog runs away, a rich man brings him back and says that he is a "rare Siberian tiger hound"... Maybe that's what breed he's supposed to be. That "Happy Joy Joy" song is now used in Sarah Lee comericals.

    i loved rugrats
blueluigi Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I liked Rugrats up until Dill came along. It was still OK with Dill but it went COMPLETLY downhill when Kimi came along.

Doug was also good but Disney's Doug was not very good.

Ren and Stimpy was also good, I'm glad it's released on DVD. I've seen a few episodes of the 2003 series. It was NOT VERY GOOD!!!!! The classic Ren and Stimpy was WAY better.

I actually liked both versions of Doug. I didn't see what the problem was with it, to be honest. I like Rugrats AGU too. To be honest, I was glad that they finally aged them. I was sick of Chuckie having to be the "baby", to be honest. I hated the fact that he couldn't talk to the adults in the original version; he was just a year under Angelica.

But that aside, it was cool. Nick was much more balanced back then; they didn't have a load of Nicktoons and they weren't overshown.
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 7 months ago
I miss 80s Nick with great cartoons like Danger Mouse and Count Duckula. I never cared for the NickToons. They weren't my thing, sorry.
    90schild87 Posted 6 years 8 months ago
holy crap, i can actually remember were i was on the 11/8/91.
i went to a mates house after school to watch cable, especially nick.
i dont know weather it was on galaxy or foxtel that nick was on, but i remember i ended up stayin the night to watch all the cartoons.
nick used to be good, now it sucks.
except for when they play all the old stuff.
    sportscarfan18 Posted 6 years 8 months ago
I agree here with everyone. I loved the older Nicktoons. I'm 21 and I still love them whenever they show. I also liked Disney's Doug as well. All grown up isn't too bad & Ren & Stimpy is just classic, especially now that it's for adults only!!!

Nicktoons were the best...i feel so lucky to have grown up in this era!
    sailor_moon_girl Posted 6 years 8 months ago
i loved all these shows i think all grown up killed the rugrats
IceIceGirl Posted 6 years 8 months ago
Yeah Quailman was awesome....i think that's the only part i liked about the show...kaloo koo koo!!! ...and you can never go wrong with underpants on your head.

Eisney (i.e. corrupt corporate Disney ran by Eisner) only cares about appeasing generations and making money now. The thing of it is, the generation they are trying to appease doesn't care what is on TV anymore...It's sad and pathetic really, not to mention that anything not Disney won't be aired (ex: the Muppets [formerly owned by Henson] & DiC's back catalog [The Real/Extreme Ghostbusters, Sonic the Hedgehog {the early "SatAM" one with the catchy theme that inspired the Archie Sonic comics}, etc.).

Nick (formerly "Nick Nick Nick" Nickelodeon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvsSgt_3nxA) is the same way, what with nixing its own hit series (ridding itself of Classic Nickelodeon/SNICK, cancelling ZIM, etc.) & butchering other network products (ex: the A! opening: http://youtube.com/watch?v=A8CXXKW6LSo).

And now, with it furthering itself from the now FFC-ran WB! (that is teaming with equally "wholesome; post-Poke'mon era" station UPN), Cartoon Network (CN) is starting to stand for "Crap" toon Network instead of Cartoon Network, seeing as all of the good American toons are being phased out for more anime (Naruto, Bobobobobobobo, Zatch Bell, etc.) & 'cause CN execs feel that they could get more money for their own stuff (ex: Ben 10, for one example, the others being Billy & Mandy and the other former "Cartoon Cartoons";) as well as cheap imports (France's Code Lyoko is one such instance).

Even CN-aired "adult" block--Adult Swim--is at a loss here, with it airing crude shows whose only feature are insults (Boondocks and Minoriteam are the prime examples), whilst hit shows Family Guy & Futurama are considering leaving for other networks ('Rama headed for Comedy Central, for instance).

I'd gladly give any amount of money for classic programming back, for even A! spin-off, Pinky & the Brain was ruined when Elymra took control: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy_-KBvO8Ek&NR.

Don'tcha feel sorry for Pinky & the Brain Brain Brain Brain...? I certainly feel for them & us viewers, as that show was living proof that dark days were ahead.

Why? It's because, unfortunately, the best we'll get (at a classic program revival, considering the channels are that are supposed to air vintage shows don't do so anymore) probably is DVDs, such as is the case with A!: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LAm5kYw6Ih8.

I miss classic programming, the non-sucky Nicktoons included.

    I really loved Doug :)

Oh Man. Those three shows were among my absolute favorites growing up. Another was Rocko's Modern Life. Nicktoons sure as heck ain't what they used to be.
Roadgeek Posted 6 years 9 months ago
Oh man, Rugrats and Doug are two wonderful shows that will be remembered for a very very long time. I've never cared much for Ren & Stimpy though.
Knites Posted 6 years 9 months ago
Outside Ren and Stimpy--the first season, I never watched any other Nick-toon. They just didn't appeal to me for one reason or another. But cheers for the article.
AdamYJ Posted 6 years 9 months ago
    Pretty good article.

Doug was my favorite of the three. I disagree with the people who say everything on Nick is bad nowadays, because I find Danny Phantom quite entertaining.
dalmatianlover Posted 6 years 9 months ago
I see that you only did a talk on the three original Nicktoons. I would have to agree that Doug was good at first but not as good when Disney picked it up. Rugrats originally ran fron 1991 through 1993, and that was when it used to be funny, but somehow, they brought it back into action in 1997 and continued working on it until who knows when. That's when it started getting annoying. My mom never let me watch Ren and Stimpy due to it's innappropriateness. Good article, nonetheless.
MrTorresSaysHello Posted 6 years 9 months ago
i didnt like doug he was a loser...but yea i used to enjoy ren and stimpy
blueluigi Posted 6 years 9 months ago
These are the ratings to all 3 Nicktoons according to TV.com

Doug: 8.8 out of 10 (first and second place tying up with Ren and Stimpy)
Rugrats 8.4 out of 10 (third place)
Ren and Stimpy: 8.8 out of 10 (first and second place tying up with Doug)

So it turns out that all three Nicktoons were great. Check TV.com for the ratings.
shiroihikari Posted 6 years 9 months ago
I really used to like Doug a lot, and Rugrats too. These shows were awesome compared to the crap that's on Nick now. I wish they'd release the old Doug on DVD or something...>_

    Great articile
    Old_school_JJ Posted 6 years 9 months ago
Yeah Doug did have hair, you can even see it in the picture. He just doesn't have a lot of hair, but he has hair none the less. Anyhow really enjoying your article, keep up the great work.
    Dan5121 Posted 6 years 9 months ago
Nice article, well-written, good shows. But I don't much care for Nickelodeon. They take all of thier good shows off the air too soon (Invader Zim, Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life, etc.). And most of their stuff now isn't that great: Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron and stuff, that's boring. The best show they have is the Avatar, and they only play that like once every three weeks (and they never tell the audience their plans for scheduling!). Yeah Nickelodeon pretty much sucks now, but they've had some good shows. You should talk more about them, and the slime and junk. Anyways Doug does have hair, they even had an episode where he was scared to get a haircut.
    Score:
    14
