What makes something retro? How old does something have to be to make it retro? We all remember how different the world was when we were kids compared to now. And generally we would all like to think that what we did when we were kids merits the label "retro". Wikipedia would have you believing in general "a vintage of at least 15 or 20 years" earns this brand . Now, at the least that would mean 1996 is the farthest back something can come from and be retro. To drive home this idea let me show you the highest grossing movie of 1996.

Pictured: Retro

Now the highest grossing film of 1997

Pictured: Not Retro?

Now the consensus seems to be that everything before the new millenium is considered retro. The word "retro" derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning "backwards" or "in past times". This being said, I think the unofficial rating system of retro should be reduced to 10 years. I know some of you are thinking "not long enough", but allow me to try and convince you otherwise. Remember 1999 was only 12 years ago and you guys fondly remember that on this site. As I said before, most people want to believe that what they were into as a kid is considered retro. I am one of these people and 10 years ago I WAS a kid. I am currently 22 years old, making me well over this official "I'm an adult now" age.

yep.....all grown up...

That means 10 years ago I would of been 12, not even a teenager. And THAT means I was officially a kid and therefore should be able to fondly remember such things as this:

And this:

And yes even this:

Don't judge me...

It all comes down to me noticing that Retrojunk doesn't have an 00's feature in there eras to select from when browsing old flicks and shows. And also A LOT of people commenting on different articles' rights to be on here due to age of content. Now if your recognizing the 70's 80's and 90's (each a 10 year difference) then logically 2000-2010 should be the next era. now obiously i don't think we should be talking about things from last year on this site (i tried by writing a horrible article while in a bad mood on a remake thinking maybe it would be in the "gray area" as it was a remake of something retro). But maybe slowly adding on to the 00's feature every year would be cool. At this point we could freely write articles about anything from 2000-2001 and next year 2002 and onward. I mean, this site exists soley as a way for people to remember things from there childhood and why should i be denied my satisfaction?

For stuff like this!

This is just my personal idea, but what I'd really like to hear is yours. Do you agree? Do you think i'm full of crap and deserve a beatdown? Feel free to comment!
