Old School Tiger LCD

The glory that was LCD Gaming.

The 90's were such great times. We all have our memories from the 90's that stick out in our minds. Some of us choose to write about TV Shows, Movies, Video Games, or our favorite food and drinks from back in the day. I have yet to see an article about something that I am sure we have all experienced at one point in our child hood (if your a 90's kid) and that was the glory of LCD gaming.

I used to spend countless hours playing these awfully boring games. Each level was pretty much the same with no change in appearance. I owned quite a few of these games in my childhood. I don't know why I never had a Game Boy or Game Gear I just never asked for one. Most of these games were over priced for what they were but, hey what isn't right?

Here is quick rundown of some of the games I owned and what I can remember about them.
The first one I ever owned was Batman.

As a kid I was a huge Batman fan and still am as an adult all the way down to the crumby acting Portrayed by big screen favorites George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In This game you stood on one side of the screen jumping up and down throwing batarangs at Joker's Henchmen. After scoring so many points you would reach the Joker at the end of the game and proceed to battle with him. Nothing fancy just dodging his Joker gas and pummeling him with batarangs. I don't remember ever beating this but at the time I thought it was fun.

Batman Returns was another one I had.

Which was a lot more fun than the first one. In this game you would drive the batmobile engaging in battle with the penguins henchmen on motorcycles. Then you would emerge from the batmobile to engage in hand to hand combat wiht them inevitably battling The Catwoman and Penguin at some point in the game. I remember reaching them but by the time I got to Penguin I was so close to dead that i could never beat him. Still hours and hours of fun with this one.

I also had Terminator.

In this game you played as Kyle Reese. The father of John Connor. You would go through level after level battling Terminator body parts from arms to legs and other robots. After battling your way through the robots and body parts you would have a final Showdown at the end of each level with The Terminator himself. You were equipped with a few different weapons along the way that included a pistol, machine gun, and my personal favorite a grenade launcher.

This next game I believe was built up to be more than it was.

In this game you would spend level after level in a dance off with the man himself MC Hammer. There were only a few dance moves and this game was incredibly hard to win. In fact I don't remember ever winning a match against him or I just couldn't tell if I had won. This game was nothing like I expected you didn't even get to be MC Hammer. Very disappointing.

In this small screen adaption of the popular console game you got a choice between Blanka, E-Honda, and M. Bison on the right side and Guile, Ryu, and Ken were on the left side. All characters were playable and all had special moves. Guile had his sonic boom and flip kick, and blanka had i=his trade mark rolling thunder and electricution. They were my favorite ones to use.

Hands down the best one I had. All I can remember is In the first half of the level you were fighting off mousers and then in the second half you were heading into the water to disarm a bomb I think. I never made it to the end of this game it was very complicated but damn it was fun to try. This one actually belonged to my brother but I played it more than he did.

All these games hold a significant place in my childhood. I spent hours on end trying very hard to conquer these glorified bore machines. I don't know if I could play any of these for longer than a minute now. i think every kid I knew had at least one.

Not too long ago I remember taking my son to McDonalds and in his happy meal was a minature Sonic LCD game. I remember thinking to myself how awesome the toys are now in the happy meals compared to when I was a kid... but thats another story.

These are a few other ones I had that I don't remember much about.

The one thing I remember about this one was that it talked and it was a spin off of the Metal Gear Nintendo games which eventually evolved into Metal Gear Solid for future consoles.

As much as I hate to admit it these games were incredibly hard. I think the only one I was every able to complete multiple times was the Street Fighter game.

Well I hope you enjoyed my look back into the glory of LCD gaming.

Cool article; I had the Ducktales game when I was probably 8 or 9, it might have been when I was younger though.

I also had a Tiger LCD Baseball game, which was cool(anybody remember or ever have that one?).

I loved those Tiger LCD Games, I especially love the M.C. Hammer Game (Yes, I was an M.C. Hammer Fan...In a way, I still am).

I had Snake's Revenge. I'm sure it's still around him somewhere. I also had the Teengage Mutant Ninja Turtles game but I believe it was broken so I threw it out.
Malbosia Posted 1 year 10 months ago

Hanochan Posted 1 year 10 months ago
I remember these things! I remember hating them, I could just never understand how they worked because of a omnipresent background to mess with your mind.
    Weapon_XIII Posted 1 year 10 months ago
I had the Double Dragon Tiger LCD game. it sucked.
    memboy12 Posted 1 year 11 months ago

CruJonesIsTheMan Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had a bunch of these when I was a kid. I think I still have a Jurassic Park one sitting around somewhere. Except for the NES, and a short jaunt with the R-Zone, these had a significant place in my life.
Abrakadaniel Posted 1 year 11 months ago
    yes Shinobi!!
    OX_Bigly Posted 1 year 11 months ago
My brother had a talking Star Trek game and for some reason the "That's not logical" quote sounded like Chekov. Which is of course not logical.

I had Pinball and Police Academy.
Might have had more but can't remember.
    matt82 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
yeah we all know MC Hammer was big back in the early 90's so he had his own game and even cartoon which I watched and sadly admit I liked at the time. Ha Ha... But yeah I got that particular game for christmas I just had to have it. I remember playing the Simpsons game one of my friends had it.
Hoju Koolander Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Nice article. These were definitely an essential part of any 90's toy/game collection. The MC Hammer one is truly unique, never knew that existed. The only handheld LCD game I owned/still own is The Simpsons present Bartman game which has an awesome purple casing. The object of the game is to throw cupcakes to defeat the evil Nelson. I also had a Starfox LCD gamewatch that was so cool b/c you could plug headphones into it!
Segafanboy Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had that first batman one and the TMNT one. I don't think I ever beat either of them.
edwin Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had Shinobi. I used to play that thing all the time. I remember this one kid in my social studies class who had just about everyone of these games. I swear everyday he was brining in a new one.
clockworkengine Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I've still got a Double Dragon II game like this. Fun! But not fun at the same time!
    matt82 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
@Robert Long ha ha yeah I remember that. That one was actually kinda fun which is wierd because I don't think I ever actually figured out how to play it or the object of the game.
Robert Long Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Funny. As soon as I saw the title, I recalled my nephew playing Snake's Ravenege and having to hear a digital voice saying "I found rations!!" over and over...

Great Article. The only LCD game I had was"One on One" Jordan Vs.Bird, and it was total crap.I admit the"Ninja Turtles"game was cool.My friend had a WWF LCD;Hulk Hogan vs.Ravishing Rick Rude, anyone remember that one?
    memboy12 Posted 1 year 11 months ago

but then i used to loose
chokeslam Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Good article thought the topic actually has been covered before. Nothing wrong with getting a fresh perspective on the topic though. I can remember playing games like this long before Gameboy was ever thought of. Back in the early and mid 80's these things were top of the line in hand held gaming.
    thechamp1985 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I forgot all about LCD games! Man, thanks for writing this! I had the Batman, Ninja Turtles, and a Shinobi handheld. I spent hours on those. I truly forgot all about them. Just brought back a flood of memories. Thanks again for this damn good article.
    matt82 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I really appreciate all the great feedback. I am working on idea's for my next article. Thanks again.
Abrakadaniel Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Yess!! I remember many of these floating through the past. I had the TMNT one above and one that was similarly shaped Top Gun, but it was all grey. And I also had the Batman. I also remember a few of the Tiger STIX lcd games..the two i remember was a pogo game where you bounced around for points and a shark game where you ate things for points while avoiding spear fishers and bombs. Great article, great memories!
Goodgold Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had the Mars Attacks tiger handheld. That was a expensive piece of junk. The cool thing was that it came with a wireless gun you used to shot aliends on the handheld. It was like a portable Duck Hunt 8)
BIGMercenary Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had Mortal Kombat, Sonic 1, and two Grip Games (look those up!); Twisted Metal and Road Rash. There were no graphics to these things and yet we all played them anyway.
    StayPuft1989 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
The only Tiger LCD I got was Disney's Mighty Ducks from the animated series.
TheOutlaw Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had...well, still have it somewhere in the house...the handheld Sonic The Hedgehog.
    This_guy Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I remember these handhelds not being cheap and if you did the math you could eventually save up for a basic Gameboy and a couple of decent games, which is why I only got two Tiger Elec. games: Mega Man 2 – ‘cause I was heavily into my Mega Man phase and ……. The Little Mermaid….What? It looked interesting at the time.
    KingAbortus1987 Posted 1 year 11 months ago

I think your article's better though.
    jho8 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Great article matt, I had the exact same ninja turtles, a basketball game, and of course power rangers. Do you guys remember the TIGER BARCODZZ though? I remember having an X-Men one, but don't remember gameplay at all. Was hard to believe that these games were $15 -$20 a pop back then
    Units1019 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
When your parents couldn't afford the latest Nintendo/Sega game, you unfortunately had to settle for the Tiger handheld version.......at least I had to.
8 Bit Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I remember having several of these as a kid but the only one I can remember vividly at the moment is Gauntlet. "Awful" and "boring" are indeed perfect adjectives to describe most of these things. But for whatever reason I still played the hell out of them.
    chbot567 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had 2 Disey lcd games. One was The Little Mermaid, and the other was Aladin.
Nightwatcher Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Oh yeah, and I also had the Ninja Turtles game that's pictured in this article (natch). That game was hard as hell, it also got destroyed with water damage so it's in the land fill now *grumble*.
Nightwatcher Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had a Sonic 3 Tiger handheld once. It had to be my favorite one because it was the only one of these things that I could actually beat the nano circuits out of. Of course it's long gone now but maybe I'll replace it some day. Thanks for this article, matt82. Nice piece of nostalgia.
    matt82 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Thanks a lot for the compliments this has got to be my best article so far that I have written.
ActionBastard Posted 1 year 11 months ago
These were cool back in the day. I had quite a few myself. I had a Mortal Kombat one that was cool. I had that Batman returns one too. Thumbs up.
    demonpuppet87 Posted 1 year 11 months ago
When I was in respise (which I think it was called), one of the ladies I had to stay with had a ten-year old son that owned the Street Fighter 2 handheld. I remember playing that in the dining room in their house one night I was staying with them. The next day, he had a Sonic 2 handheld, which I played with during a car ride to a nearby Holiday Inn (now a Howard Johnson), where we had lunch we'd gotten from McDonalds and played in the game room, which had games like Donkey Kong, P.O.W. Prisoners of War, Chase-H.Q., Zaxxon, and Road Kings pinball, just to name almost all of them. Overall, I enjoyed this article so much it rekindled this such kind memory.
DeliGuy Posted 1 year 11 months ago
I had the TMNT handheld. Def a great game! Good article! These were for those of us whose parents couldn't afford a Gameboy!
