Top 5 Worst Comedies

My opinion on the top 5 worst comedies from the 80's and 90's.

Movies are one of life's greatest pleasures. Whether they'd be about a trip to the moon, giant monsters destroying cities, or a funny story about a man and a woman who argue a lot, but deep down, they love each other, they're a delight. But in the 21st century, movies just seem to have lost their luster and are extremely hit and miss, even more so than they used to.

And comedies are there for whenever you feel bored or depressed.

But 5 of these nostalgic comedy movies weren't entirely entertaining.

Keep in mind that they're all in my opinion, and I was stupid enough to sit through all 5 of them. With that, let's begin.

5. Big Bully (Warner Bros. + Morgan Creek, 1995)

What can I say? Rick Moranis is one of the greatest comedic actors ever to exist. But that doesn't mean that he can't be in a turkey or two. Big Bully was the last theatrical movie in his initial career, as well as the second-to-last overall in said initial career.

It's about a literary writer named David Leary, who moves back to his hometown in Hastings, Minnesota and becomes a teacher at his old school. There, he runs into his childhood bully, Roscoe Bigger, played by Tom Arnold.

The one thing that grinds my gears is that their sons are the EXACT OPPOSITE of their dads. David's son Ben is this pissed-off bully that hates his dad's guts because he and his mom divorced, and Roscoe's son Kirby, on the other hand, is a timid, nerdy kid, plain and simple. This makes no sense! It should be the other way around, with designations running in the blood!

But there's only one thing redeemable about this movie: the slapstick between David and Roscoe. Eventually, it escalates into a hilarious, all-out war!

4. Dutch (20th Century FOX, 1991)

Before his death, John Hughes was best known for making two kinds of movies: slapstick family comedies and teen slice-of-life comedies. This is one of the few that isn't, but it's still a comedy.

I thought that it would be really funny since Ed O'Neill, known as Al Bundy from Married... With Children, Glenn from the Wayne's World movies, and Kevin O'Shea from Little Giants, stars as the eponymous character, but unfortunately, it's not quite as funny as I had hoped.

What's it about? Well, it's about Dutch Dooley, a bumbling working class guy who is asked to pick up a woman's bullied child prodigy of a son named Doyle from a prep school to bring home for Thanksgiving. Throughout this road trip, Dutch and Doyle have some difficulty getting along with each other, to say the least.

Doyle is a bit of a pain in my butt. The DVD cover on the movie's page somewhere on this site implies that he's like Bart Simpson, but they're not even close. Bart had a MUCH sunnier attitude compared to the thundercloud that is Doyle.

My favorite part was when Dutch was playing with fireworks.

3. Just One of the Guys (Columbia Pictures, 1985)

Just One of the Guys is a teen comedy about a girl named Terri Griffith, who disguises herself as a boy in order to come up with an interesting story for the school newspaper, so she can be taken seriously as a journalist, and while doing so, she falls in love with the cutest guy in school and tries to keep up with the facade.

You'd expect hilarity to ensue, right? Not quite. Aside from the "itchy balls" part, this movie is weak on trying to be funny, and Terri's ex-boyfriend Kevin is really, really annoying. All he does is argue with her in every scene that he shows up in! Every time that he shows up, I just want to whack him like a mole.

2. Greedy (Universal, 1994)

Out of all of the stuff that Michael J. Fox did in his career, we all remember him best as Alex P. Keaton and Marty McFly, but mostly Marty, because Back to the Future was an epic movie.

But Greedy is far from epic. Okay, granted, it also had the late Phil Hartman, who had also did the dub voice for Jiji the cat in Kiki's Delivery Service, but this movie is still very bad aside from the amusing Jimmy Durante running gag.

It's about an old man named Joe McTeague who is filthy rich and his inheritance is up for grabs for the other members of the extended McTeague family. Conflict ensues amongst them throughout every 5 to 10 minutes.

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's people yelling, and nearly all of the adult characters do this at the drop of a hat. The most annoying character would have to be Molly, a woman who was hired to be Joe's nurse and is implied to be having an affair with him just to get his money.

To a lesser extent, there's Robin, the girlfriend of Fox's character Danny, and she spends half of the time on-screen nagging at him.

1. The Wild Life (Universal, 1984)

This is the worst movie that I've ever seen, comedy or not; I am not kidding.

Christopher Penn plays this guy who's off to college, and his ex-girlfriend, played by Lea Thompson, works at the donut shop and has sexual affairs with a police officer in his early 30's. Let me say this as a rebuttal: "Eww, that's really gross!! XP"

There's also Eric Stoltz as Tommy, a rather immature guy who is trying to win over his extremely fickle love interest who happens to work at the mall. In addition, there's Rick Moranis as an mall worker composed of several 80's stereotypes by the name of Harry. Why? Out of all of these people to get for this abomination, why did Rick have to be one of them?

Bottom line, I wouldn't recommend seeing this movie, mostly because all of the characters are flatter than a deflated inner tube.

And there you have it. Sure, sites like Rotten Tomatoes may prove me wrong, but I made my point in this article. Well, until next time, sayonara!

The Stupids come to mind followed by Meatballs Part 2 3 and 4, any film with Corey Fieldman and Corey Hiam; except for The Lost Boys, and The Goonies, and a few others I can think of right now.

So Mr. Woodcock is pretty much a direct rip-off of big bully and the hot chick is a direct rip-off of one of the guys..nice going, Hollywood. I guess if they are shitty movies, it's ok to reboot them. Well, look how that turned out LOL.
    jprc10 Posted 2 years 21 days ago
    Hey, I liked Dutch.
slasherfan Posted 2 years 26 days ago
Worst movie ever. The movie "DUDES" it's so bad I don't think a copie exsit. The movie stars Jon Cryer know to the retro world as "Duckie"
acefspradez Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Saw every movie listed. Although they weren't my favorites, I was entertained with them all and they are FAR from being the worst movies I've ever seen. Good thing this article did was bring me back to when I first seen each movie. RETRO style!!!
Hoju Koolander Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Of course I remember the cover to "Just One Of The Guys" from my VHS rental days, but never rented it. The only scene I recall from Dutch (yes, I saw it in the theater) was when they get robbed by the hitchhiking hookers they picked up. That DID happen didn't it?
lexhogan Posted 2 years 1 month ago
try watching teen wolf 2, the first one is 80's classic goofy, but the second was horrible!!!and nothing but trouble was bad, except john candy, he's good in everything!!!
DrewP Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Can I just say that as far as bad comedies go can we all agree the 85-95% of all Steve Martin Comedies post 1988... ( a few exceptions.. Bowfinger). Being on this list?
taciturnwes Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Nothing But Trouble actually isn't nearly as bad as everyone says, I mean, it IS bad, but it has its moments, sort of in the realm of "so bad, it's good". And it is the only time you'll see John Candy playing a woman dressed in a full wedding gown.
RetroJerk Posted 2 years 1 month ago
@MrCleveland, 2pac Shakur also makes a cameo in that movie. You can have that info for free.
MrCleveland Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Oh...I thought this was "Top-5 Worst Comedies" for TV Shows.

But if you want a bad comedy...watch "Nothing But Trouble" a film that Dan Aykroyd directed...It's basically a "Rocky Horror" rip-off (Couple gets lost in the middle-of-nowhere, seduced by freaks, and weird-ass food).

This was all based on a true stroy that Dan Aykroyd experienced and it also has John Candy and Chevy Chase...and Chevy Chase's career didn't recover until the show "Community" and Demi Moore had issues on the set!

Hey I just posed the question, It seems for every thumbs up comment I see a "hey you're crazy, I liked so and so!" comment. I guess its not really the idea of a "worst of" list that I dont like, its just the fact that these listed are in no way the worst movies of the 80's or 90's, case in point many people reading this article like these movies. Yet there are hundreds of movies from the 80's and 90's (mostly straight to VHS) that pretty much everybody hates.
second exodous Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I voted thumbs up, and most people didn't post comments leading me to believe that they would vote it down. I really liked this article and hope to see more 'top worst' lists on here, it was nice for a change. Honestly this isn't any different than a bad movie review on this site, lots of those, this one just had 5 movies the article author didn't like rather than one.
RetroJerk Posted 2 years 1 month ago
These comments are not matching the score you're getting. Are you up to something? Most of the people are disagreeing with you yet you have one of the highest scores on the front page, higher than even a spider man article!
tjnaples Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Greedy is a good movie, we'll agree to disagree.
WaveBoy Posted 2 years 1 month ago
The thing I like about 'Just one of the Guys' is probably the brother who imo steals the show, plus it's got great 80's flavour. ;)
    shemps1 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I gave the article a thumbs up but thought you were a little too succinct with your descriptions and explanations. Personally I would have liked to have seen the article fleshed out a little more, but really that's a minor gripe I have with the majority of articles here.

Of the movies on the list that I have watched I personally agree with you; they are pretty bad. I couldn't even sit all the way through Dutch and Big Bully they were so terrible and I've never liked Just One Of The Guys at all, no matter how much boobage is shown. With that said I have to scratch my head at some of the commenters that have given you low remarks simply because they disagree. Opinions are subjective and you even addressed that in the beginning. Besides, it's not "here's some movies I don't like and I hope you agree with me".
    lody666 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Considering I liked two of these movies and really like the part in Just One of the Guys when she shows her VERY nice rack to prove she's a chick-this article is FAIL.
second exodous Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I just watched 'Just One of the Guys' and I have to concur, not a great movie. I still liked it though, it wasn't hilarious but it had it's moments.

2 down and 3 to go, I love these articles, I like going through and re-watching movies that I would have otherwise never even picked up again.
second exodous Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I have to say that none of these movies are in any way great movies but I think I could come up with 5 I hate more. I think the only one I have seen recently was Dutch and that was like 5 years ago but I've seen them all. I need to re-watch these.

This is a great theme, 'My most hated list'. I see this being one of those mini-trends that this site goes through.
    Guild_Navigator Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Anyone ever seen a late 80s flick called She's Back with Carrie Fissher? I think by and large that is the absolute worst comedy I've ever seen and I've seen a LOT of crap in my 38 years on this puny planet.

Now that I think about it,the decline of the movie career of Carrie Fisher would make a good article. I mean.my GOD... How do you go from the Star Wars series to lower-than-Troma stuff like Hollywood Vice Squad and The Time Guardian?
TheLemonChannel Posted 2 years 1 month ago
    Sorry,but I liked"Dutch","Just One Of The Guys",and"Greedy"."Caddyshack 2","Best Defense","Bio-Dome","Wagon's East","Smokey and The Bandit 3","Ishtar",now there are some major turkeys
taciturnwes Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Man, you lost me on Greedy, which is one of my personal all-time favorites, the cast is amazing in it, the laughs are almost non-stop, it has a great overall message to it without coming on too strong, and it has one of the best endings to a movie ever. In my opinion, one of the most underrated comedies of the 90s, but I guess you're entitled to your own opinion.
RetroJerk Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Man these comments are getting awesome!
    80sruleperiod Posted 2 years 1 month ago
First of all if your gonna put down movies at least pretend you know what your talking about, Eric Stoltz played the guy going to college, not Christopher Penn, with that said knowing you picked The Wild Life as the worst movie you have ever seen is just sad. You either dont watch many movies, or just like to pick ones that star Rick Moranis because your in love with him. Either way your an idiot.
fertilegod Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Big Bully and Dutch were both very good movies. "One of the Guys" i enjoyed as well, more than its re-make "She's the man", i'll never forget when the girl's brother is swearing at the person he's talking to on the phone and speaking rather sexually to them, and hangs up and says "it was grandma".

Very disappointed in this article, there are much worse movies - these were some good movies you're putting down.
chokeslam Posted 2 years 1 month ago
@Swordsman: Yeah, its like hearing a song by Vanilla Ice or New Kids On the Block. Sure I despised those artists back in the day but now-a-days I enjoy hearing their songs on the radio just because I have such fond memories of hating them and making fun of them.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen a bad movie with a friend, and years later found ourselves talking about the experience and laughing. Some of the "worst" in retro can hold some fond memories.
mytsharp Posted 2 years 1 month ago
i thought dutch was a great movie, i still watch it occasioanlly.
InvisibleSwordsman Posted 2 years 1 month ago
To clarify: Reliving some of the "bad" movies, toys, shows, etc. from the 80s/90s is a fun way to reflect on the past. It's not like we're talking about actual tragedies here.
chokeslam Posted 2 years 1 month ago
As others have said Dutch was awesome!! I also enjoyed Greedy and while I wouldn't call it and epic classic by any means it was still an enjoyable movie. I've never seen any of the other movies on this list.

I do like that you game props to Rick Moranis, he was great and I miss him.
    Mighty_Max Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Big Bully was 'meh' when I saw it. Dutch is great. I need to find me a copy ASAP!
    palmer10 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Big Bully wasn't too bad. I do happen to like most Rick Moranis movies, but probably not quite as much as you do. And I loved Just One of the Guys. William Zabka is the ruler of all 80's bullies and it didn't hurt that I thought the girl in the movie was kind of hot. Not many ladies can pull off the short hair. Either way thumbs up here.
    KIT2000 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
hey retrojerk whats with the DP i dont get it.
mofu Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Dutch was called Driving Me Crazy here in australia. i remember quite liking it....i was about 11 at the time though.
    illwill2020 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Greedy is actually one of Michael J. Fox's most underrated movies. I thought it was good and should be put up there with Doc Hollywood.
RetroJerk Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I didnt see the humor in this.
    MoranisFan1991 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Guys, I did explain redeeming factors for choices 5 through 2.
InvisibleSwordsman Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Although cheesy, Just One of the Guys should not be on this list...

@RetroJerk: I think remembering bad things in a humorous way is a big part of nostalgia.
RetroJerk Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Whats the point of making a "worst of" list? I thought this site was for reflecting on the good times?
    bridgmon007 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I liked just one of the guys lol, but dutch was A huge turd I have to agree I loved Ed Oneil in pretty much everything ive seen him in except this movie I remember seeing it years ago and not remembering it so I gave it another try the other year and yuck. Big Bully also sucked as for the others I havn't seen them.
    ProphetSword1 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Whoops...meant to say: "It's okay if you don't like some movies that I like." Sorry.
    ProphetSword1 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
We're all entitled to our opinions. I watched "Greedy" a few months ago, and it had some funny moments in it...but overall, it wasn't a bad movie.

Same with "Just One of the Guys." I must have watched that movie like 50 times when I was a teenager. It wasn't so bad during the time period it was made and for the kind of movie it was, but it hasn't aged well. Some movies don't.

Even still, I respect your opinion. It's okay if you don't like some movies I don't like. Thumbs up for effort.
La Violetta Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Of all the things that Phil Hartman did in life, voice work in Kiki's Delivery Service is the one that gets a mention. Bizarre!

But bad movies or not, I love a nostalgic movie trip. I may look up some of these just for the charm of the bad movies of yesterday.
    MoranisFan1991 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
@matt82 and DeliGuy Well, maybe it's because I'm not a big John Hughes fan. But I DID say I liked the fireworks scene.
DeliGuy Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Wow... I have to question whether or not this is meant as a serious list. I mean Dutch is awesome!
mysticwryter Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I liked Big Bully for the little stupid pick on scenes like "Who's ever silly gets a wet willy!". It was a lot of fun. It's a good article, I'll say so your worries shouldn't be too nervewrecking, lol. I would have added a little more movies into the mix, but that's my opinion.

    T.U.
    matt82 Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Dutch was awesome!! What are you thinkin? I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
