Old-school artifacts

This gear could make or break you in the classroom

Let's face it. Some of us were not cool in school. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

But boy did we try.

For most of our elementary and middle school careers, it seemed nothing was more important than fitting in.

As adults (or big kids pretending to be), we've now learned that there are much more important things in life.

But when you were a kid, what was more essential than being cool?

These shirts, for instance, were pretty cool when I was in sixth grade. It seemed like everybody was listening to Kriss Kross.

Some genius had the idea to combine these cartoon characters with the short-lived pop icons. Backwards clothes.

This classic graphic was just the tip of the iceberg. Looney Tunes T-shirts were a big deal.

While sporting your Looney Tunes shirt it was only fitting that you wrote with style. And what better to use than a multi-color Bic?

Prior to middle school, there weren't many homework assignments I turned in that didn't have all four colors scrawled across the page.

You write with red for a while. Oh, what? Tired of red? Use green!

I'm almost positive that teachers hated these multi-color click pens, because it probably made reading essays an eye strain.

When we weren't in the classroom, we were taking a break from academia outdoors on the playground.

And on the playground, you could rest assured we were swapping these:

For the most part, you could buy Friendship Bracelets just about anywhere. My friend's mom owned a party supply store, and they had some really cool ones.

Or, if you were lucky, you knew somebody who could make Friendship Bracelets. Then you had something original looking. Otherwise, you probably had something along the lines of one of these:

If you don't remember Friendship bracelets, I'm certain you'll remember these:

...

Slap bracelets were a lot of fun, and you could pretty much buy them anywhere: gas station, K-Mart, grocery store.

There was a rumor going around that some kid was using a ratty slap bracelet and almost died because the metal strip inside cut his wrist.

Don't know if it was true or not, but I always slapped carefully for fear that I'd end up like that poor bastard, dead at 12.

Extracurricular activities didn't occur on the clock, but it still felt like school to me. At basketball practice, you can bet everybody had the best shoes.

Like most fads, 90s foot fashion was all about novelty. And what more novel an idea than shoes that lit up when you stepped down on them?

Ok, ok...well there is something cooler than shoes that light up: shoes that you can PUMP up. I always figured the more I pumped them the higher I would jump.

...

That theory didn't pan out. Pump up shoes or not, I got my ass handed to me. Scored four points that season, and that was free throws.

But my abilities as a basketball player were irrelevant. I knew it was my skills as a student that would really matter.

So I attacked my studies the way any self-respecting student would in the early 90s:

With style.

If I close my eyes and concentrate, I can still hear that velco-ripping sound echoing throughout the classroom.

It was the sound of us learning.

These things had the most bizarre computer graphics art, and it was so cool-looking to me at the time. So wave-of-the-future.

Strange how dated that art looks now, but it sparks happiness in my nostalgic brain as I'm sure it does yours.

Now, we've discussed our preference for pens that dispersed four different types of ink. Now, let's talk pencils.

And not just any old pencils. You wanted a writing utensil that screamed for attention. You wanted something a little, well, neon.

...

...

...

The best thing about these was the simplicity. Take a very basic, unassuming object. Eg. a pencil. and...make it look like it was designed by a crazy person.

I ate it up. I'm sure y'all did too. The only thing about Yikes pencils is they didn't hold up in a pencil war. They broke in two on the first hit.

Pencil wars...sigh. That's a whole other rj article in itself. Feel free to steal the idea : )

But no matter what kind of pencil you used as a student, nothing could make or break your coolness like your clothes.

And what was the absolute coolest article of clothing when we were in middle school?

What's cooler than that?
...

...

Everybody walking around looking like Stay Puft Marshmallow man.

It took a long time to convince my folks to drop $100 on one of these, and I can't believe they actually did. What a tenacious brat I must have been.

But as kids, what could we do? We were slaves to the latest fads, and following the crowd was our most useful tool in proving to the world just how cool we were...or weren't.

And at the end of the year we got rewarded with a thousand autographs to validate our efforts...or earmark the awkward memories.

The middle school yearbook gave birth to some real literary gems:

"Some sign the front, some sign the back but I was the first to sign your crack."

"H.Y.G.L.T.S."

"R.H.A.S."

Raise Hell All Summer, Retrojunkers. Thanks for reading.

Yikes pencils! I LOVED those things. I still have some of them. XD I also had the four-color pens...and then one with TEN colors. XD
Detox Posted 2 years 1 month ago
LOL, the looney toons were certainly a must in grade 1,2 and 3..and the multi-colored pens..man I was so fascinated by them when I first saw one..I wanted one right away..I got so addicted to clicking on each of the four colors at the same time..man those were some great times..ahh I miss them..wish I could relive them again..change a few things..I had a major crush on a girl and I had the chance to get with her but no, I had to screw it up by conforming to every kids natural response when a girl tries to kiss a boy..by saying "eww cooties" stupid stupid stupid!!! i'll hate myself for that for a very long time..

Oh, dude, the multi-color pens! Heck yes! I remember one of the student teachers giving me my first one. I thought it was the greatest invention ever created by mankind! Those Yikes pencils were cool, but sometimes the colors and patterns could be really irritating or even nauseating. When I was a kid, I had a gangsta-Looney Tunes shirt AND a pair of light-up shoes. I was mighty fly! I’d never heard that slap bracelet rumor before, but that’d sure make for one heck of a school yard urban legend! Also: mysticwryter, that is one truly awesome story. I only wish I had done something that poetic in my school life.

I had a multi-color Bic that lasted me almost 3 years, I used it in middle school and I remember a teacher tried to make off with it once complaining "But I'm out of red and blue pens!" then I gave him the "You must always come to school prepared and ready for work" lecture that teachers always give you if your pencile breaks and you don't have another or if you need to borrow a peice of papper. LOL He threatened to send me to the office for being smart, I really wanted to say "Isn't that the purpose of being here?" but decided against it.

What signaled the new school year was approaching besides the need to find the perfect crazy pattern/colored 80's jams? The need to go up and down the "Back To School" isle and pick the perfect pictured Trapper Keeper. This process was sacred and took a while, but then I'd find the one to represent me that year and keep me organized. I hated how the velcro would begin to tear the plastic around it however...irritating!

the most common jackets in my school were the Raiders Bulls and Redskins yah they cost quite a bit back then. I also remember those Yikes pencils, my school also had those ridiculuous pacifiers on a rope you use as a necklace
    llort1000 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
i swore i was so cool with my bugs and tazz gangsta shirts...i never got my own 4 colored pen so i would take one if it was laying around...always wanted a trapper keeper but never got one...i remember getting the pump shoes..gave me an extra centimeter on my vertical...i also got those light up shoes..but they were size 10 and i was only about a 7 at the time...AHH the good ol days...
Hoju Koolander Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Trapper Keepers were the ultimate 90's school accessory, ahh the sound of separating velcro! But I have to agree with Units1019, those things ripped along the seems really easily.
    Units1019 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
And when I mean toast, I mean stuff in it was either completely unorganized, the thing was coming apart or the interest just wore off.
    Units1019 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
The Trapper Keeper....the biggest waste of money ever. I remember getting one at the beginning of every school year (at least in elementary school) and that thing was toast by November.

AWESOME!!! article. I never had a Starter jacket of my own, but sometimes I would rock my boys Knicks one. The Pumps are a classic, thinking of looking for a pair. Trapper Keepers were the ultimate in cool when you were in JHS. I had that Bugs and Taz on a grey T-Shirt. I got goosbumps just from reading your article.
Great job, brought back so many memories from my JHS days.
    DirtyD1979 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Never got the shoes with the lights but I did have the Reebok Pumps. I doubt they really did much but they were undeniably cool.
    bridgmon007 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
I forgot about friendship braclets and those trapper keepers still look cool in my eyes!
milatchi Posted 2 years 2 months ago
    gainesvillefrank, you've done well!
Lil Penny Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Yeah I wore that Hornets Starter jacket with pride. Wasn't even a fan of the team, but teal was THE color of the 90's haha.
Goodgold Posted 2 years 2 months ago
You didn't hijack anything :P We just had common experiences with these "old-school artifacts". Please write more of these articles.
mikemonmouth Posted 2 years 2 months ago

    YZ86 Posted 2 years 2 months ago

    comicbookfan19 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
i remember the light up shoes i wanted a pair of them so damn bad.
gainesvillefrank Posted 2 years 2 months ago
oops. Sorry for the overlap, Goodgold. Didn't mean to hijack your stuff there.
Goodgold Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Good stuff, a lot of stuff from my 90s articles are here, glad to see you remember them. Are you from Gainesville, FL?? I just got accepted to go to UF :)
    Guild_Navigator Posted 2 years 2 months ago
I was an skater so I don't think I ever wore any of that. It was all about OP/Gordon Cooper T-Shirts and Converse sneakers.
DCPuppyGirl Posted 2 years 2 months ago
God...I remember all of this. All the cool kids in my school had a Trapper Keepers and Yikes pencils. I wasn't cool, I was stuck with a Lisa Frank notebook instead.
BruceSato Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Hahahaha, Palmer yeah "Buddy Bands"! I thought the same thing. Friggin Slater, Kelly and Jesse dancing around in that cheap video-commercial whispering "Buddy Bands! Buddy Bands! Buddy Bands!" Classic
zackieboy Posted 2 years 2 months ago
wow...thanks for the memories! Not only did I have the 4 color pens, but I had the 10 color ones too. I also had Yikes pencils and the Trapper Keeper...who didn't have one of those..? I remember the commercial...there's probably one on this site. The Trapper Keeper was attracting so many "honeys" the guy was "gonna have to fight them off with a stick". Also I had a Chicago Bulls starter jacket. Thanks Aunt Barbara!
    Nice article!
the commander Posted 2 years 2 months ago

the commander Posted 2 years 2 months ago

palmer10: I wasn't the first in my school to get Pumps but after much begging FINALLY I got a pair. I can still remember the excitement. Proudly, okay smugly, pumping up my shoes that first day in gym class. Then imagine my dismay when I realized they weren't suddenly going to give me the ability to jump like Michael Jordan. Poor, stupid kid.
    illwill2020 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
I had the same folder with the black and white floating cones.
    palmer10 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
I was the first kid in my elementary school to own a pair of Reebok pumps. Spoiled little bastard, I know. Once those were worn out/out grown three months later as every pair of shoes I owned as a kid seemed to do my mom for some reason bought the exact same pair again. Big mistake mom I can't sport the same shoe back to back, so they were left in the bag to be returned. Mistake #2, Dad mistook the bag for trash and threw them out! Thumbs up on the article bro! The friendship bracelets reminds me of the Buddy Bands episode of Saved By the Bell.
8 Bit Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Wow. This article just brought back a shit-ton of memories. I honestly had everything mentioned in this article (including that exact Trapper Keeper with the black and white cones AND the Hornets Starter).

Yikes pencils... lmao. Forgot all about those.
mysticwryter Posted 2 years 2 months ago
I had a silver and black yikes pencil that I refused to sharpen. I kept it for 6 years, when I was taking my last test for my senior year. I used it; kinda like the ending to my school years and going into adult hood as I dwindled it down to the eraser.
jpdraven Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Trapper Keepers, 4 color Bic Pens, Rebook Pump Shoes lol. Starter jackets were High School for me.... BUT this article was good, I enjoyed it!
    Timothy1964 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Trapper Keepers were around back when I was in junior high school (what middle school used to be called) in the late 1970's!!! I had one in 9th or 10th grade that was a solid green (no picture or design).
twinkiethekid Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Man, in 5th grade we had the never-ending Reebok pumps vs. Nike Air 180s vs Nike Air Jordans debate. And I can also remember my mom scaring my sister with the death-by-slapbracelet story -- that poor bastard! Good read.
BIGMercenary Posted 2 years 2 months ago
I still have a Trapper Keeper stored away. It has my old school work in it. And those Yikes pencils, man I must have went through 3 whole trees a year by using those things up, especially the Nickelodeon ones.
    Larlem1978 Posted 2 years 2 months ago
    I wore Skidz pants back in the day,does anybody rememeber Skidz?I also wore Bugle Boy.Of course,no matter what I wore,I was,and unfortunately,I still am a geek/dork.
chokeslam Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Wow, Trapper Keepers and four color pens! Those were a few of my favorite things in the elementary school years. I was the first in my class to have a four color pen and boy did I think I was the shit.

Those slap bracelets were banned in my school. I was never exactly sure why, but I think you may have nailed it with the slit wrist rumor.

Great article, I definitely enjoyed it. T.U. #4
