What's you favorite 80's Movie

Let's see what 80's flicks make the grade

Jay here for another episode right out of my twisted little mind. This time let's take an 80's walk down memory lane by discussing our favorite 80's films. Now I don't know about any of you BUT my favorite way to see a movie in the 80's was at the Drive In movie Theater. This was the original BIG SCREEN, and there was something really cool about being able to sit in a lawn chair out in the summer night air with friends and watch a movie. I feel it brought us closer to the experience. So for me the best way to watch a movie was the Drive In. 80's kids were outside kids, meaning we did EVERYTHING outside, we got dirty and ripped clothes playing, we made forts and dirt bike tracks, unlike today's kids who never leave their playstation or computers and live on texting, youtube, and facebook.

Now for the content, or the subject matter... We knew where to go to see a good movie but what to see!? That's the 64 thousand dollar question.

So as we all did in the 80's we'd grab the local newspaper to check what movies were out... Yeah that's right NO MOVIEPHONE lol. After scouring the Movies we'd see where they were playing AND if it was the Drive In we begged our parents to take us that weekend. Sidenote, this is another reason I loved the Drive In because it was an event, UNLIKE today where kids are dropped off at the mall to see a movie, in the 80's EVERYONE went.

The Goonies and The Monster Squad for me were 2 movies that brought me and my friends closer together. Both movies have the premise of a group of kids banning together and having a crazy adventure. We got comedy, romance BLAH, action, creeps and thrills, AND who doesn't love Pirates and the Universal Monsters!? These somewhat campy films hit the nail on the head portraying 80's kids, and we ALL were able to relate or look up to at least one character in both flicks. "FAT KID FARTED" from The Monster Squad is still used to this day between me and my childhood friends. These 2 movies absolutely rank in my favorite 80's films because of their nostalgic value.

THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY tops my list of favorite 80's movies. Granted Star Wars A New Hope was a 1978 release BUT the following 2 movies were 80's flicks and I saw the original Star Wars at 3-4 years old. Star Wars was the film of childhood films for me and all my friends. Lightsabers, the coolest planes I've ever seen, alien planets, Darth Vader and action action and more action... AND THEN in Return of the Jedi every adolescent boys wet dream happens... Princess Leia in the Slave Outfit! Need I say more about Star Wars? Star Wars had everything a young boy was looking for in a story and it's no wonder that Star Wars has done so well over the years. It has spawned it's own culture for crying out loud. Yoda is like Bhudda "Do or do not, there is no try", and Vader is like an obedient Nazi SS Soldier... " You don't understand the power of the Darkside, MUST obey my master". This trilogy had a little bit of everything in it. The only time I liked the snow was a s a kid because we could break out all our Empire Strikes Back toys and recreate the Battle of Hoth, and then go sleigh riding. Halloween was a virtual Star Wars Convention, you had kids dressed as every major character almost every year.

Next up for me has got to be another Lucas Speilberg masterpiece, the Indiana Jones Trilogy. Indiana Jones was shot so masterfully that for the first time we see Archeology as a cool thing, and the places Indy goes, and the adventures he has leads many to think of him more like Nazi Fighting version of Sherlock Holmes. Indy's adventures left plenty for a child's imagination to embellish upon, and Indy ALWAYS had some hot chick, I mean what's really not to dig about these movies? Action movies appeal to boys and this is one example why we love them so much lol. I HATE SNAKES.... I HATE EM'! "Indy what are going to do next... I dunno I'm making this up as I go along."

The next 80's TRILOGY that I love dearly is the Back to the Future Trilogy. HELLO McFly, Anybody home!?, don;t be so gullible McFly. Ya got that Butthead? lol. This series is the ONLY one that's taking place in the present... 1985 at the time, the story is happening to an 80's kid. What 80's kid can't immediately relate then to Marty's trials and tribulations? Keeping the "time" that Marty is alive in the present was genius. Marty and Doc Brown took us on a VERY different kinda ride, and the ride directly played on a child's imagination. They travel through time... how no one ever thought of this earlier is beyond me actually. And we had awesome actors playing awesome characters. Again a wonderful storyline of complex characters, and a very detailed "universe" that these characters live in. Great stuff and so much so that to this day I still want to BUY a Delorean and retro fit it to look like the time machine, and ONE DAY I will.

These are the movies that affected us most as kids in the 80's back here in my home town in Long Island NY. They were the blockbusters of my time and I will always have a very close bond to these movies. These also are 3 Trilogy's that ALL had major Amusement Attractions at both Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Theme Parks. The rides only further solidified the bond to these movies for me because they became part of kid culture. So much so that Disney has announced that the original Star Tours ride will CLOSE Oct 2010 so it can be completely over hauled and reopen as a bigger and better Star Tours II in 2011! That speaks volumes for our beloved Movies. Alas Back the the Future the ride did close at Universal Studios to make way for The Simpsons.. which SUCKS, but thus is life.

Now there were MANY other greats that we loved, but these are the films that stood out to me.
Now what about you guys? What were the films that you consider to be the top 80's films for YOU. Let us know and keep this discussion going!

LOL you are entitled to your opinion BUT remember one thing here....

We write these articles in good fun and for free mostly to represent memories from childhood OR things we love and want to share. Many times articles of this nature are written in the first person, as if you and I were sitting in a diner having the conversation together.

I saw Star Wars in 78', ok in reality I am off by a few months.... my bad, not a major issue really. I'm going off of memory so YES some things may not be entirely 100% accurate to the minute and day.... sorry dude.

If you didn't like the article that's cool. But seriously, I never understood why some people need to get on a soapbox and senselessly bash someone else instead of being constructive in a criticism.

jangofett32, we are all here to have a good time. Don't lose sight of that man.

Way too many great 80's movies to pick just one.
But if I must, I'd say Blade Runner(1983)...can you tell?
To be honest though, I did really get this movie till I was an older teenager in the mid 90's

Great pictures, terrible writing without all the facts (Star Wars came out in 1977, not 1978), bad grammar, horrible use of words, and bad spelling! Couldn't understand what you were TRYING say half of the time! Totally unreadable!!! Learning to use a spell/grammar checker or going back to school might help! LOL!!!

Star Wars: A New Hope came out in 1977. Not 1978.

That part is at the VERY end when "LIMBO" is opened and it starts sucking everything into it... Frankenstein is being sucked into "LIMBO", and he's holding Phoebe's hand... OF COURSE she can't hold him and he starts to get sucked into "LIMBO".

Phoebe says exactly what you said, then throws her stuffed animal to him as he's in the air spiraling into "LIMBO".

Frank says Bye Phoebe.... byeeeee, and there he goes... sucked into "LIMBO" where apparently Monsters belong.

SIDENOTE: This is also when Dracula ALMOST drags Shawn into "LIMBO" and somehow through supernatural forces VAN HELSING flies OUT OF LIMBO, to snatch up Dracula and suck him back into "LIMBO".

I bring this up because I always wondered as a kid... " Hey if Van Helsing can fly out of "LIMBO" like Superman.. why the hell can't dracula or any of the other bad guys stuck there?" That's a small oopsie in the story that the writer's obviously never thought about hoping the suspension of disbelief would get them through this without the audience picking up on it. I dunno man I picked up on it immediately lol.

yup...that's it! there's also a part I kinda remember where the lil girl (Phoebe) was telling Frankenstein not to go. But he had to cause he was being forced by (something...I don't remember). So she was like don't go...don't go and "Franky" kept on screaming Phoebe, Phoebe...NOOO! And then he said "Good-bye, Phoebe". I think. Anyway, everytime I hear the name Phoebe (which is pretty rare) I think about that part of Monster Squad.

My wife would think that I'm a dork for remembering something like that. She gives me a hard time because I can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday but I can remember silly things like this from 25-30 years ago. I tell her that's it's my damn short term memory loss. And that I watched a lot of tv/movies over and over back in the day.

Nooo I don't hate the Simpsons, I hate that Universal axed Back To The Future The Ride to make way for the Simpsons Ride lol.

    cgimovieman:
Found them through relentless searching lol and got VERY VERY LUCKY!

    zackieboy:

    The line goes LOL:

Shawn- "Kick him in the nards"
Fat Kid- "Wolfman don't have Nards"
    Shawn- " JUST DO IT!"
Fat Kid kicks Wolfman in the nards..... Wolfman grabs nards and bends over
Fat Kid- " WOLMAN'S GOT NARDS!?"

    LMFAOOOOOOO

Unreleated to the topic but related to the article in general...
is anyone else having the same formatting display as me where it's showing about 5 screens horizontally?
I think it has something to do with the way you edited your article & displayed your pictures.
zackieboy Posted 2 years 2 months ago
wow...there's sooooo many movies to think of. I would say the Goonies and Ferris Bueller for me. Nice article!
BTW...you can't forget this part from Monster Squad...
    "Kick him in the nards"
    "Wolfman doesn't have nards"
(KICKS WOLFMAN IN THE NARDS...AND HE SCREAMS)
    "Wolfman's got nards!"
Fazer Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Do you hate The Simpsons or do you just hate the Simpsons Ride? I'm kinda confused.
cgimovieman Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Where in the world did you find the old newspaper ads for those movies? That's kind of a rarity. You can find poster images and other publicity, but copies of newspaper cinema ads? That's pretty good. Yep, by far the Indy series, BTTF series, and Star Wars rank among my very favorites too. Some people tend to even hate on them these days because they'd been so heavily merchandised, exploited, and talked about. But there's a reason FOR that. They're modern day classics, and I don't know a single kid who grew up in the 80's and 90's who wouldn't claim to love 'em.

Great article. Thankfully, we still have a drive in movie theater where I live. I've been taking it for granted because I know it's still there, I will have to revisit it this summer!
I watched The Monster Squad for the first time last weekend. I thought it was overrated.
jpdraven Posted 2 years 2 months ago
    superhumansamuri:

I agree with you, there was this aura about the Drive In. I dont know if it is because you're in your own car, or because you could smoke, or get rowdy, or what.... I think it's because you're out in the elements... on a summer night we'd watch the movie sitting on lawn chairs with either AM/FM headsets on, OR a boom box next to the chairs. When I got my own car I had a kicking system in it and popped the trunk so everyone got the bass from explosions and could really hear the movie lol.

Being out in the elements watching on this monstrous screen was just cool and I truly miss it. I would go back to a drive in theater in a heartbeat if we had one here on Long Island

superhumansamuri Posted 2 years 2 months ago
i love and miss the drive-in because for some reason it felt different than seeing a movie in a theatre but i think i like the drive-in experience a bit more,i use to go to the milford drive-in in NH and thankfully its still there, awsome article
acefspradez Posted 2 years 2 months ago
Right up my alley. This article is "kickin". (Little taste of the 80's there)
Pretty much nailed most of the good ones, in the article and in other members comments. We had a drive-in walking distance from my house (mile and a half through fields and brush) called Starlight. We would go there as a family and my friends and I would also sneak in with a "boom box" wearing my Levi's 501's and Pony high tops. (I know...we were bad.)
I don't really have a fav since I love(d) a lot of them. Raiders, Wars, Back, Busters, etc... The whole decade is a fav. Always has been...Always will!!
    matt82 Posted 2 years 3 months ago
I can't stand movies that don't take place on earth so Star t I do like the Wars is out but I do like the rest of the movies. I also love Honey I shrunk the kids, Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Batman, Weird Science, I am big 80's 90's movies guy. pretty good article I give thumbs up
keown Posted 2 years 3 months ago
What really takes me back are the newspaper advertisements in your article. I used to see movies in those theaters all the time as a kid. Here in Birmingham, the Galleria 10 would have movies unavailable in other theaters (off-the-wall horror and artsy films), the Festival was by Eastwood Mall and Century Plaza (on the east side of town), and Green Springs 6 is where i saw countless movies as a child. In the suburb of B'ham in which I lived, it was the only theater we had. Alas, all these places are now gone. Where the Galleria 10 used to be is now a Home Depot (or Costco?). The Green Springs 6 was located now houses a post office and Chinese restaurant. The Festival building sat vacant for years, but is now The Edge theater. Haven't thought of those places in years, and it made me feel good to do so. Thank you SO MUCH for your article. It made me happy.

ok 1st off I HATE YOU for having a Drive In LOL kidding... SOOOO JEALOUS

2nd Walmart has Howard the Duck for 5 bucks in the clearance bin, go check it out. ;-)
    todd11673 Posted 2 years 3 months ago
Oh, yea, I forgot to mention it in my last comment, but just two towns away from me there is a drive-in. It has been open about 3 to 4 years now. You get 2 movies for 6 or 7 dollars, I can't remember the amount.
    todd11673 Posted 2 years 3 months ago
All the ones in the article and ones listed in comments are all great to me. Just have to add that even if they are not popular movies, Howard The Duck and The Garbage Pail Kids Movie have a special place in my heart. Yes, I admit they are corny movies but I still love watching them to bring back memories.
    Mister80 Posted 2 years 3 months ago
I heart everything about this article! Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Monster Squad, Goonies, and Back to the Future are my absolute faves and I grew up watching them all the time. And my excitement for checking out BTTF the ride, Star Tours, and The Indy stunt show for the first time was insane! Great great memories.
And my other fave 80s movies include Spaceballs, Princess Bride, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Ferris Bueller, Neverending story, Three Amigos, The Wizard (lol), Bill and Ted, and WILLOW!

You can't go wrong with the Original Trilogy, it's what got me into Star Wars. Also Indiana Jones is awesome with Last Crusade as my favorite. Though not included on the list Masters of the Universe is a cool movie and Frank Langella IS Skeletor:D
jpdraven Posted 2 years 3 months ago
KEEP ADDING YOUR FAVORITES GUYS, THAT'S THE POINT OF THE ARTICLE!
Thanks for all you support as well, I love you guys!

    ProphetSword1:
I couldn't find a Young Guns 1 Newspaper clipping so I used YG2 since the 1st one was an 80's flick. And yes I goofed on the Star Wars date for A New Hope... lol. Hey I was like 3 when I saw it lol.

    chokeslam:
I agree to incorporate pics into the story, and because some pics were so big, I had some trouble inserting them and writing so I just grouped them together. I wanted to add blurbs like in the picture of Marty McFly standing in front of the drive in screen I wanted to say... " See even Marty McFly knew how cool the drive in was lol."

I'm still getting the hang of inserting pics into the text. Soon I'll get to resizing all pics to the same size for easier insertion into articles and to keep it uniform.

I'm just happy you guys all dig what I write about and YOU enjoy it. If a memory or a story I share gets to someone, and takes you back for 5 minutes like it has me countless times then I have done a good job, AND hopefully made you smile or laugh and made your day go a little better.

Anyhoo, it's Monday and I am off to my weekly Poker Game. Have fun guys and girls, I'll catch ya on the flipside real soon!
The Nomad Posted 2 years 3 months ago
Ahh good article. Didn't see Goonies or Monster Squad back in the day, but the rest are a little piece of history for me also. I have to add Blade Runner though, along with a few from chokeslams selections. Honestly, there weren't many really bad movies from the 80's ;) I am a child of that era so I may be a bit biased =)
chokeslam Posted 2 years 3 months ago
Nice article. I absolutely love "The Monster Squad" and think it is one of the most underrated 80's flicks. The phrase "Fat kid farted" come up among my childhood friend quite often as well. And of course the Big 3 80's Trilogies, I could never get enough of revisiting those. Perhaps a few more obscure or at least stand alone 80's films would have been an nice inclusion, but over all a very good article. I particularly like the newspaper clippings.

One thing I would do different is integrate the pictures into the text instead of just having big blocks of pictures.

Since you asked some of my other favorite 80's flicks include
    Ghostbusters
    Gremlins
    The Princess Bride
    Spaceballs
    Coming To America
    Planes, Trains and Automobiles
    Ferris Beuler's Day Off

Well I could go on for days but those are some that come to mind.

@Prophet: If I may nitpick your nitpick, while "Young Guns II" did technically miss the 80's by 8 months I would still consider the Young Guns franchise to belong solidly to the 80's. I mean let's face it, the 80's really didn't end until sometime mid 1993.
    ProphetSword1 Posted 2 years 3 months ago
Good article. I'll give it thumbs up.

A couple of nitpick points, though:

    * Young Guns II didn't come out until August 1990, and therefore doesn't qualify as an 80's movie. Young Guns would have been a better substitute.

    * Star Wars came out in 1977, not 1978. Sorry, the Star Wars nerd in me must correct you on that one.

    Good work, though.
