Everything TMNT

A day growing up tmnt...

Ok, i think its time for everyone to come to the realization that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles basically ran our lives. Well, those of us born in the 80s and grew up thru the late 80s and early 90s with Leo, Mike, Raf and Don. Also, who didn't want to literally BE Casey Jones growing up? And please no one talk trash on Shredder...he is the man. Anyway, here's a day growing up with TMNT on the mind.

First you wake up to a little TMNT cereal. Actually, it was pretty good too, which was suprising for a cereal based on a cartoon. This cereal goes hand in hand with Mr. T cereal, tasted awesome and looked awesome. This was a perfect start to a perfect TMNT ruled day.

Next you had to get ready for school. Your mom packed your snack pack and peanut butter and jelly sandwhich in this bad boy. Now, i actually got free lunch at school...haha but the thermos was SO sweet. When looking for pictures online of TMNT lunchboxes i found some sweet WWF and Dino-Riders lunchboxes.

While at school, you and your friends broke out these bad boys and started trading or fighting over our TMNT trading cards. If you had rocksteady and krang and your boy had baxter stockman and bebop you guys could swap to compliment the various cards of your favorite characters.

Now its the reading hour at the end of the school day in homeroom. What do you read? How about Mutanimals a TMNT comic series that was pretty rad. The stingray guy, Mondo Gecko and a giant cowhead were mainstays. I'm not sure why the actual Turtles were involved in these comics, didn't really make much sense. I stil have quite a few of these actually and i definately would buy them when picking up my X-men and Ironman comics.

After school you would go to the local arcade and put quarters on the ledge and wait your turn for the TMNT arcade game! When you got tired of playing Street Fighter 2 you could put some time in with the heroes in a half shell. Notice a live action April in the upper-left corner, by the way. Even though Michaelangelo was my favorite, i would only use Leonardo, his swords were the best weapon to beast Foot Soldiers and Mousers. Remember how sweet it was getting to the bosses at the end of the levels? Seeing your favorite baddies in the arcade was so rewarding, i could have played this game forever, but had to go home at some point, so...

You're on your way home when you hear, "HELLO!" followed by that sweet, sweet song...it was the ice cream truck. You realize you have enough for one ice cream bar, so which do you get? Maybe the awesome WWF bars with great wrestlers on them, or do you get the best tasting one, the big red glove with the baseball gum in the middle? No, you get a Mikey TMNT ice cream pop! Gum balls for eyes? Yes, thank you. Now you head home for real.

THROW THAT SHIT ON! Time for some action, that theme song gets you going. The cartoon was the center of my TMNT obssession, and i imagine most of you. What a lot of cartoons now lack that shows like TMNT had was humor and action. Shredder was bad ass and at the same time he was funny. Most cartoons today lack this quality.

Now that the best cartoon ever got you worked up, you had to bust out the toys. I would spend so much time playing with my favorite characters and still have a few today. Why were all the Turtles different shades of green? Weird...yeah. Guys like Casey Jones, Rat King, Yusagi Yojimbo, and Slash were so cool looking, you would play with them more than you did with the core four.

If you had the figures, most likely you had the RetroMutagen Ooze. This was the coolest looking stuff in the world, i don't even know where to start. You could pour them on your figures or just play with it by itself...either way you probably got it all over the place and were going to get in trouble regardless. I really want to find some now...

After dinner, my mom would take me to the Hostess outlet in Neptune, NJ next to Belmar, NJ and they ALWAYS had the Turtles pies. I always got these, but NEVER could eat them haha. They tasted awful but looked so awesome. I would end up just eating the orange cupcakes and giving my TMNT pie to my sister. But this was one of the lasting images of TMNT in my mind's eye.

Lets go to the movies tonight! Only option for you, TMNT fan, is the TMNT live action movie. Corey Feldman as Donatello? Yes, please. The guy who played Casey Jones, i just noticed, was in Shutter Island...yeah he plays the dude that he thought burned down his apartment or house, whatever. Ok, so this was a nice end to your TMNT day, can't think of a better way to end it...except going home and throwing on a sweet TMNT costume...

haha, man, I was at the park the other day and an ice cream truck came by and i decided to take a look and I see a TMNT popsicle! It was in the new cartoon wrapping, but when I opened the wrapper, the ice cream pop was the EXACT same as the orginal, even with the mini bubblegum eyes that literally dissolve when you ate them LOL, good memories, good times

I think I get to claim the ultimate Ninja Turtles fan here - I had soooooooo many figures and vehicles and everything, but the one that I never got was the Technodrome. I wanted that soooo bad! I even had the Module, that thing was awesome. But why I can claim to be one of the ultimate Ninja Turtle fans - I actually saw them on tour lol. I had to look it up just now, but it was the "Coming Out Of Their Shells" concert tour. Ahhh, yes. And I bought the video for the tour lol. Watching them come out of the smoking ground was amazing lol. Anybody else remember when Burger King used to give out VHS tapes of 2 episodes with Kids Meals?

A+ Article! I had a lot of figures, but my baby was the Turtles van. It was the bomb! Sadly, it got run over by a truck and I had to throw it away. Thumbs up!

There was nothing Ninja Turtle related that I didn't want back in the day. Thumbs up!

The TMNT are my all-time favorite thing! I have a can of the ooze which I bought on Ebay for $46.50. It was sealed too, obviously. I broke the outter seal to see the stuff inside. But it's still sealed on the inside

I was ashamed to admit it because I didn't want to be bullied, but I was all about the Turtles when I was a kid. From the cartoon to the movies to a handful of the toys.
    fragglerocker1020 Posted 2 years 10 months ago
Oh yes how can you forget this stuff. The turtles were my heroes growing up and I loved all that stuff. I had the comforter set and curtains in my room.

Wow, that brought back memories. I remember going watch the First Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when a movie ticket was $3.50 for day viewing. My favorite TMNT movie would have to be the II "The Secret of the Ozoos". Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go!!! Good Article.....TU
applepwnz Posted 2 years 10 months ago
I loved the Turtle Pies though, those things were delicious!
GladstoneGander Posted 2 years 10 months ago
I had that exact same lunchbox in the 1st grade! I still own the complete "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures" and "Mighty Mutanimals" series from Archie comics, and both are still worth re-reading (especially the later issues of "TMNT Adventures";).

TMNT supporters are still in strong force! Whenever I wear my Donatello hooded sweatshirt I get at least two compliments. Excellent article... and man, I could sure go for one of those Hostes "ooze" pies right about now, I don't care what you say about their taste!

1990 was just about the best year ever to be a Ninja Turtle fan. I remember all of it: the movie coming out, watching the show everyday, getting a Splinter figure among others for my birthday, going to Burger King just to get those badges and the VHS tapes, getting the impossible-as-hell NES game, dressing up as Donatello for Halloween... those were the days. Heck, they even had Raphael visit my school! I even got a picture with him! How awesome is that?!
    zedd93 Posted 2 years 10 months ago
TMNT was, is and always will be THE SHIT!!
When I was a kid, I used to watch it mainly on tapes, as my cousin had the first 3 seasons recorded from TV. We used to play TMNT 3 on the NES. Funny thing is just today, I had a marathon and beat the 4 TMNT NES games.

I still keep my TMNT bag I used to go to kindergarten with. I can't believe it's still in perfect condition, remembering how many kids wanted to steal it :D

Great article, I really enjoyed it!
    VHS4eva Posted 2 years 10 months ago
Ahh yes I do remmeber those days of TNMT. Forgot to mention playing the games on the classic and super NES, now that was the greatest. I use to go over to my friends and we would play for hours trying to beat the games but damn they were hard...HARRRDD!

Nice article! At the age of 5, I had to get a ninja turtle, my favorite being Leo. I remember one weekend afternoon my dad took me to Toys R Us to get my turtle. Along the way to the action figure aisle, my dad kept playing with the other toys...I had to drag him. I had that same exact lunch box, and I still have the TMNT movie poster (framed) laying around somewhere that I got when I was a kid. Then every week (if we were good) my mom would treat us to a toy, so I'd get another turtle or villain. When we were real good (My cousin and I) my mom bought us each the van. I think our grand finale of TMNT gear was the NES game.

Great article. Brought back some fond memories of TMNT. I remember my Dad making me a Casey Jones hockey mask out of cardboard, then I ran around the neighborhood beating up bad guys (or trees).

Who could not forget TMNT? One of the most unbelieveable classics of all time! I absolutely love TMNT! Had the show on VHS(I now own the entire series and movies on DVD), toys, shirts, etc. The theme song is unforgetable. I miss the old days so much. I wish I had a time machine. Death to modern things and up with the classics!
roofpig Posted 2 years 10 months ago
The Archie Adventure comics series was and is amazing. I have about 70% of the collection (thank God eBay was able to help me replace the ones I had as a kid and were destroyed), including the Mighty Mutanimals mini-series. I've actually been meaning to do up an article on the series, but as my absence from this site can attest to, I've been busy lately.

Dude. I totally still have that ninja turtles movie poster with them emerging from the sewer. Easily one of the most nostalgia-inducing images in my mind. Grrrrreat job.

I totally remember taking my lunch to school in a TMNT lunchbox, and fighting with my friends over the trading cards. Great article.

I remember one time that arcade machine got me in trouble. I was playing it with a couple of kids and they got killed and I made to Shredder and I started yelling that I need help and before they came back my mom thought I was being kidnapped! I might have beat Shredder to if it wasn't for my mom yelling at me and making me leave the arcade. lol
MrNostalgia Posted 2 years 10 months ago
Dude what an awesome article! I was never really into the TMNT franchise but reading this article makes me want to get into the turtle craze.

From around October 1992 until spring 1993 I dated this girl who was a "Disney expert" and was obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Around the time I started going out with her, she took a trip to Disney World and when she came back, I don't know how many pictures she gave me of her posing with April and the Turtles at Disney's MGM Studios!
Hoju Koolander Posted 2 years 10 months ago
Fun, fun. Man I so wanted to be Casey Jones. Not only was he in Shutter Island, but he also plays a crooked cop in "Defendor" with Woody Harrelson. You gotta rent that up buddy!
vkimo Posted 2 years 10 months ago
Man, not too often do I get "I forgot all about that!" feeling here. But I had it TWO times reading this!

That TMNT Mutagen! Man, I was so psyched I looked it up on ebay. 40 DOLLARS for one little bottle of it!!! And those Home Run TMNT pies, I'd give anything to taste one again!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is just one of those enduring classics. It will never get played out. Recently I bought like the WHOLE line of action figures at a garage sale, and sold them. I regret it now, and probably will for a long time.

Overall, great job, Mike. Maybe some slicker formatting next time though. Keep it up, you're shaping up to be the next NLogan of Retrojunk!
