C.C. : Mortal Kombat II

Destroy all expectations? Don't mind if I do!

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Directed By: John R. Leonetti

Starring: Robin Shou, Talisa Soto, James Remar, Brian Thompson, Sandra Hees, Lynn Williams, Irina Pantaeva

Run! The Mortal Kombat Dragon is awakening and he's pissed off!

Y'know, we all expekted a sequel to the first Mortal Kombat movie, seeing how it ended on a kliffhanger.

Everyone was just hunky-dory and relieved that Earth is safe for another generation. Just then, a ruthless demon emperor (who strangely sounded like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget) kame from nowhere for our heroes' souls, to which Raiden (Christopher Lambert) replies:

"I don't think so."

That was when the klosing kredits rolled and I stuck in the second movie to see how everything would wrap up. Everything wrapped up by the end, by my God, did it leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Beyonce Knowles?

Annihilation was directed by the director of photography from the first film, and this film shows that it's best to stay with your day job. It's boring, inkoherent and pretty cheap kompared to the first film's superior special effekts.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

The villians of Outworld, refusing to accept the outcome of the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, try their hand at storming Earth themselves. Waiting to kick the krap out of them are valiant Earth warriors Liu Kang and Kitana (Shou and Soto, the only cast members to return from the first one), the burly Jax, and Sonya Blade, as well as a newly humanized Raiden.

"Awwwww, shucks!"

David Schwimmer?

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT?

Despite the being the blandest kharacter in the film, Kitana is pretty hot. And that's pretty much it.

WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT?

Everything else.

The special effekts are just lame. The effekts in the first movie were kool to look at. HERE, they're dark, murky, and kinda hard to see, especially the final monster battle between the villian and Liu Kang.

Then there's the scene where our heroes use giant guinea pig wheels to travel akross the underground. My God, that scene made me laugh SO hard. The way they move in one part looks like stop-motion animation is just unintentionally hilarious.

"SHUT UP, MOM! I'M PLAYING VIDEO GAMES!"

The film is just boring, thanks to the godawful fighting scenes. I never thought it would be possible, but the fighting in this movie aktually makes the first movie look like Enter The Dragon. The fight scenes just go on and on here, automatikally making our heroes even more unlikable and even thinner than kardboard. In fakt, here's the movie in a nutshell:

Run, talk, run, fight, walk/talk, fight, walk/talk, fight, run, fight, talk/walk, fight, fight, you know the rest.

You get the ko-kreator of the game series to share story kredit, yet THIS is what they kould kome up with?

"I come free in every Happy Meal."

Meet Nightwolf and the Invisible Man!

"Good news, Shao Kahn. You're Clancy Brown's replacement in the new Highlander movie."

BOTTOM LINE:

This film just plain sucks. A sekuel for Mortal Kombat was without a doubt going to happen, but man, they let us down big-time. No story, no kharacter development, just a lot of boring fight scenes and running. Wheeee....

OVERALL SKORE:

1/5

Even at age 10 I realized this was really a piece of shit movie

I saw the first MK in theaters. When this had come out MK was dying down at the time. I rented it the week it came out on VHS, yes I'm so old I remember how great VHS were and still are (if it hasn't been done someone needs to do an article on the greatness of VHS!) and it was like watching Rudolph getting ran over by a John Deer tractor! I had the same feeling for TMNT III. Why is it that the best stuff gets ruined by Hollywood!?
    Guild_Navigator Posted 2 years 11 months ago
I have no qualms in pointing out this flick as the worst part II ever. This movie sunk all the maimstream popularity that MK had gained in the early 90s and had not MK4 been released later that year it would probably had been forgotten by now.

Lego Maniac, where did you hear that is what the movie would be called? I was confused by your original post because Mortal Kombat: Deception is the name of one of the more recent games and I find it hard to think they would name the movie after a game if they are trying to shy away from the more supernatural/fantastical elements of the series. I have seen clips of it titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Thanks, TreyVore. Now I know. Also, I must state my anger at the costume department for ruining my image of the awesome actor James Remar, who played Ajax in "The Warriors" and Raiden in this crapfest. Did they have to give him that little Aladdin-style vest and crew cut to show off his scrawny physique? Christopher Lambert got a wig and a freakin' robe in the first one, James Remar deserves a wig and a robe, too!

So you know Hoju--that guy that played Shao Kahn was Brian Thompson. The most memorable thing he did in his acting career up to this movie was his role in, yes, The Terminator. He played the punker that stabbed Schwarzenegger with his knife and then Arnold responded by ripping his heart out.

I remember seeing this in the theaters and I was like "Nooo they did not just kill Johnny Cage?! The movie just started" and "what happend to raiden?"and "That can't be subzero!" lol it was even worse when I saw it on TV a few years ago.

Units....that is as of now called mortal kombat deception that I was talking about earlier. I have mixed feelings but will be there on opening night maybe dressed as Kano with my home made aluminum foil eye cover with my wife dressed as Sonya (from the original mortal kombat game) and my daughter dressed as a little barraka. Would be so cute!!!

I want to make it totally clear that I gave you a sympathy Thumbs Up for having to sit through this movie. Why Nails? Why would you do this to yourself? The only saving grace of this film was Sonya's mud fight with Mileena. also, when Vin Diesel started becoming popular I was so convinced that he was the guy who played "The Emperor" in this movie. But it turns out it was just some other burly, bald guy who can't act.

I hope cgimovieman was kidding and that he aKtually understood the reference. I smiled when I saw all the eKstra "K"'s riddled throughout the artiKle. ^^

Just in case there's a few youngin's that haven't had that "a-ha" moment. Combat is spelled with a "C"... While Kombat is spelled with a "K". One is the proper way, and the other is the awesome way.
    Units1019 Posted 2 years 11 months ago
Well, it definetly isn't the first movie. But its fun to see characters you've played with portrayed on screen (even if they have no depth).

I'm assuming the use of K's is in honor of how the series would use em?

By the way has anyone seen the short trailer for a new potential live action movie? Or the trailer for the new game that goes back to the roots of the first 3 games?
    Lego_Maniac Posted 2 years 11 months ago
FYI....Mortla Kombat Deception is coming out soon. So keep an eye out.

I loved Mortal Kombat: Annihilation back in the day even though looking back on it now it's a laughable crap fest. The only things I really like about this movie are that it was another chance to see Scorpion in the flesh, Smoke and Cyrax were pretty cool, Shao Kahn's hilarious aerial somersault to say hi to Daddy and that some of the dialog is so laughably bad.
jbry Posted 2 years 11 months ago
Awesome article, agree completely, and CGI, for your own sake, be joking...
HannibalSmith Posted 2 years 11 months ago
One of the elder god at the end is Lance LeGault who played Col. Decker on the A-Team series.
Retro Phil Posted 2 years 11 months ago
Aw yes, the return of the 'K' Sindrome that affekted the previous artikle you wrote.

    Glad to see it return.
CaptainLou Posted 2 years 11 months ago
    CGI...i hope you're joking...
cgimovieman Posted 2 years 11 months ago
Wow, give you article a quick once over for spelling before you click publish. TONS of mistakes all over the place.

Eh it's probably my fanboy, video game lovin, closet Uwe Boll self talking but I still have the DVD and still break it out every now and then. Nice article but have to disagree with your assessment. Thumbs up on the article though. Keep churning them out.
CaptainLou Posted 2 years 11 months ago
Agreed this is a really bad movie. PS... This movie is terrible, make no mistake about that. That being said, though, it would still be worth a watch, if anything, just to revel in how incredibly awful it is and laugh. One of those netflix "i can't think of anything right now so i'll settle for this" selections...

Good article, Nails. Look forward to the next one.

Great artikle follow up to your previous review. I've never seen "Mortal Kombat II," and after reading your artikle, I kan tell that I'm going to stay as far away from it as I possibly kan. I also enjoyed the return of the mysterious "K" disease that afflikted your other artikle. You get a thumbs up from me.
