Ode to a Saturn

The memories I had owning a Sega Saturn

October 22nd, 1996. Preparations for my ninth birthday party were in order. As the balloons and decorations were put up, relatives and friends of mine soon came over for the party. That afternoon, the kids and I huddled around the dining room table for the cake. Soon after we stuffed our faces in with cake frosting over our face, I grabbed my gifts and started unwrapping them from small to big.

So far, they were action figures and electronic handheld games. But one last gift was waiting for me, as my older brother had snuck out of the dining room and brought back a surprise gift. Now this thing was big. Was it a home stereo system? Some kind of toy helicopter with a battery charger? Many thoughts were going in my head as I was tempted to open it.

I started unwrapping it with a hesitant but excited feeling. Not even with the first half of the gift wrap gone, my jaw dropped for a whole minute as I kept unwrapping. It was the Sega Saturn, included with a demo. Not only that, but my parents bought a few games for it and stuffed them in the package with the system. I made a high pitched wail and began running in circles around the living room furniture in pure excitement. I thought I would lose my sanity just from the outcome.

So later that night, all of the kids and my relatives had to leave. My stepdad and my brother began setting up the AV cables and the plug for the Saturn. I had 5 games to choose from.

My brother suggested that I try out Virtua Fighter 2, since he wanted to play me in a versus match. I nodded in agreement and let him start up the system. We were given a nice little Sega Saturn intro screen, and put in the time and date. After that was done, the game started up. As I watched the FMV intro and the demo of the characters fighting, my jaw dropped yet again, this time for a whole minute, as I saw the mindblowing graphics and heard that catchy music that went along with it. So after that little intro was over, we got into the character selection screen. My brother chose Kage, and I was Jacky. Well aware of my brother's gaming skills, he kicked my ass a few times. But that didn't matter, as I was still very happy with my new game console.

The demo I got was pretty interesting too. It game with games such as Clockwork Knight 2, Virtual On, and Three Dirty Dwarves.

Three Dirty Dwarves was a multiplayer game, and just by playing the one level demo, it was damn fun, so a month after I got my Saturn I begged my parents to buy the actual game for me.

Virtua Cop 2 is an arcade shooter, and it shows. For each level you had to shoot down criminals, and avoid shooting any victims that get in the way. It was very addicting, and I enjoyed playing it.

Believe it or not, Sega Rally Championship was the first game to give me motion sickness, and the only time so far that I'd gotten it. It was a fun racing game nonetheless, but I didn't play it much.

Panzer Dragoon seemed like another shooter, but you fly atop a dragon and shoot your enemies down. This was one of those games where pressing up would make you descend and pressing up would make you ascend. It took a little while to get used to, but I had a lot of fun playing through it.

As I said in my Worst Games of the 90's article, I didn't really enjoy Bug! as much as everybody else, but it was an okay game.

Despite the games I had, I at least got to rent Astal at my local Blockbuster Video before the Playstation section took it over.

Astal was the first Saturn game rental that I got my hands on, and I thought the grab-attack mechanic was pretty cool. In some levels, some of the Saturn's graphic capabilities are shown off, such as sprite layering and screen panning, which I thought was very clever. And since it was a new thing at the time, my jaw dropped a third time.

As December came around, I got something in the mail. A demo of a Christmas themed NiGHTS into dreams game! Even though I hadn't even played the original NiGHTS into dreams, this was a very unique game and I just loved humming those yuletide tunes that went along with the levels. With only information for the demo, I had thought that the actual game only released in Japan and not the U.S..

There were a few games that my older brother played, but I couldn't due to the ESRB rating... But he only played two.

Loaded was one of them. In this game, it's a top-down view of a 3D environment, as you shoot your enemies and look for keys to unlock certain doors. The M rating just shows as killing each person causes a blood splatter across the floor. The six playable characters are a mixture of villains, anti-heroes, psychopaths, perverts, and mutants as stated in the instruction manual, but they all have one objective, to take down an intergalactic villain known as F.U.B..

(I apologize for the pic, as I couldn't find a decent sized Sega Saturn box art picture)

D was a horror game, but I don't remember much from it since my brother played it for only one day. It had a lot of puzzle solving and creepy FMV sequences, but it played out like Myst, and had a good and bad ending.

As 1997 came around, my brother was secretly saving up for a Sony Playstation and soon purchased one. This console began getting more attention from the family than the Saturn, so I decided to play the Saturn while everyone else had the Playstation. I had my Saturn up until next year, when my step dad sold it at a yard sale. I was devastated as I saw it get sold. But he said he needed money because the taxes on the house bounced... In retrospect, I should have talked to my brother about saving his allowance and job salary for these taxes whenever the payments would go up. Maybe someday I will be able to buy another Saturn console online, but for now I just have my memories of the system and the games I played...

That about wraps up this article. See you next time, folks!

I loved Sega better than Nintendo. Sure there were NES games I loved, but in general I had more fun with more SEGA games. I still have my Sega Master System and my Sega Genesis on my bookshelf behind me (with all the connections and even the laser gun for the Master System) :) Favortie games were Sonic, Earth Worm Jim, STRYDER, ZOOM. Earth Worm Jim was exclusive to Sega until N64 I think, then a version got released for that console. By the time Saturn and Dreamcast came out I was too busy skating , and going to the arcades to play home consoles.

thanks for the comments guys, i really appreciate it :) i'm glad to know that i wasn't the only one who had an enjoyable time with the games on the sega saturn. despite losing my saved money for another saturn, i tried emulation, but it seems impossible for me. that and it just doesn't feel the same playing the games on the computer. but that's another great thing about the saturn. each game comes from an entirely different genre and the plots and characters are so unique from each other

I was a loyal Sega console fan up until the death toll of the Dreamcast. I had, at one point or another, the Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, 32X, a friggin Nomad, Saturn and Dreamcast. It's still hard for me to stomach the fact that it's been 11 years since the birth of a new Sega console. When I was growing up the term "Sega" was synonymous with console gaming, rivaling even the mighty Nintendo in the early 90's. Unfortunately, at some point or another I sold or traded in all of those systems. I can still play all the Genesis games through emulation, so I miss my Saturn the most :(

Anybody buying a Saturn today needs to get the version with the round buttons and not the almond buttons. Also, beware of the motor going, the memory card slot not working for memory cards (but will work with all other devices) and the battery being dead. Also, the games are all over the Internet as ISOs or other funky disc images that can't be burned. Still, nothing beats have that over-sized jewel case and real, shiny, original CD!

Two systems I always wanted but never got around to getting was Saturn and Dreamcast. Everyone I talk to that had one of these consoles liked it better than their Nintendo competitor that they had at the time. People that had them loved them but they didn't sell as well. I think it had to do with Sega's poor advertising, nothing else.

I got mines for Christmas when they had the "3 free games" offer. I couldn't play it until after X-Mas because I didn't have an RF unit. I was a Capcom fighting game fanatic back then and claimed that I would never need another console again........until Final Fantasy 7 came out on the PSX.

I still have my Saturn and games, all in original packaging.

The irony of this article for me is that I just recently brought my Saturn out and started buying new games and accessories for it. I'm having my own little renaissance with my Saturn, picking up all the games I missed out on when I first had it back in 96. One of the most underrated consoles of all time and capable of so much had the developers taken the time to really learn and get the most out of it. I'm proud to still have my original Saturn while my original Playstation (sold to Funcoland many years ago) is god knows where by now. Great article!!!

Never had a Saturn. had Sega CD and Dreamcast. I do remember the bizarre ads for Saturn in Gamepro and such. One had Ice Cube, thuggin it up as usual with the "S" logo around his head. Made no real sense to me.

When I visited Japan in 1999 I bought a number of weird Saturn games, including a pretty racy datimg sim. I really need to go down the basement and bring out ye olde black box one of these days.

Totally underrated game console. My first console was a Sega Saturn (bought in early 1997 at age 7). So many memories of that console, mostly because it was my first console. My favorite game was DaytonaUSA, a game that came with the Saturn. The graphics, for its time, was just amazing. The only reason I don't have one anymore is because about 6 months after I got it, I traded my Sega Saturn for a Nintendo 64, which I still have. I really wanted Super Mario 64! Anyway, thanks for this great article. It really brought back some memories.

The Saturn is definitely my favorite system. Congrats on the article, I enjoyed it.

The saturn was a revolutionary system in so many ways, it was the first one to come out having the option to attach a modem for online gameplay, it also had built in memory, had expansion for ram and 5 processors!! 2 cpus 2 gpus and 1 processor just for the sound, this was pure awesomeness once you hook it up to your then pro logic systems :D None of the other systems had these features, i guess thats what made programming games for this console so hard! GREAT ARTICLE THUMBS UP!

I have absolutely no Saturn memories, never even touched a controller and this was still an enjoyable article. Congrats!

I'll never forget my aunt taking me out on my birthday to buy a Saturn. One of the best surprises ever. Ultimate MK3 was the game I bought a Saturn for. Kudos to mentioning NIGHTS. That game holds a special place in my heart in that after mastering it, I became a real gamer.
