Remember When..SNICK Premiered

My recolecction of SNICKs first night

Remember When SNICK Premiered?

Good Day All!

After such a good response from my first article, Wrestlemania 10- I Was There (http://www.retrojunk.com/details_articles/6649/), I have decided to return and introduce a new series of articles entitled Remember When? My articles will probably follow the same format as the Wrestlemania article. I plan on telling you about the experience as I remember it. Most people seemed to enjoy that. Im also looking forward to reading about your memories in the comments section. Im very excited to kick this series off, and I plan on doing so when I ask you:

Remember when SNICK Premiered?

Nickelodeon at night that isnt Nick At Nite? WHAT! THIS IS AMAZING! The thought process of a 6 year old who just found out that Nickelodeon would be on the air until 10 PM on Saturday nights. This was huge for us kids who werent old enough to go out on Saturdays, and it gave us an excuse to beg our parents to let us stay up late. I mean hey, if Nick is still on, theres no way it too late to go to sleep right? Exactly. What a great bargaining chip by Nickelodeon. I remember it seemed like an eternity before SNICK kicked off. That orange couch still comes to mind every time someone talks about what to do on a Saturday night.

SNICK (Saturday Night Nickelodeon) premiered on August 15th, 1992. It was an exciting night in my house. My parents were at a concert that night which meant one thing- Grandma was in charge. Now let me answer this question now- How the hell do you remember this? Honest to God, I wish I knew. When you are a child, your brain absorbs everything like a sponge. There are certain events, or periods of time, that I can recall as if they were yesterday. Some of them are a bit off the wall, hence the idea behind this new series of articles. If I can take my off the wall memories, perhaps it will stimulate everyone elses mind, and we can all come here and talk about some of the best times of our lives, certainly of our childhood. Im also extremely detailed and paint the picture of exactly how everything was, from the smallest detail up.

Back to what I was saying- mom and dad were out, Nanny was watching us. 8 PM rolls around, and I just remember feeling so anxious, like something very special was happening. Maybe I took it a bit more seriously than others, but this is what was important to me at the time. What excited me most about SNICK was that I knew that the channel would be premiering new shows. Anytime Nick put a new show on, it was an event. My brother and I are in our dinosaur pajamas, and our grandma is sitting with us on a blue couch, and it begins:

8PM- Clarissa Explains It All

One of my all time favorites as far as live-action Nick shows are concerned. As we all know, it really helped in kick-starting Melissa Joan Harts career. Part of the reason I loved it so much, was because you felt like Clarissa was your friend who was telling you about what she had been going through. The other reason was because it was funny as hell. This was a show that was extremely well written. Ive recently seen a few episodes, and I still think its funny to this day. Thats why it was well written- both the kids and the parents could enjoy it (much like Rugrats). I remember being excited simply because I was watching Nick when I wasnt suppose to be. Dick Van Dyke or Bewitched was supposed to be on, but no, Clarissa Darling is singing her theme song instead.

Now there was one thing about this that disappointed me; it wasnt a new show. Now dont get me wrong, like I said before I loved this show, but I wanted to see something new. I wanted to see Nick expand. Well, at 8:30, we saw something new.

8:30 PM- Roundhouse

This was something new indeed. This was a song and dance show which I hadnt seen on Nick before. It consisted of shorts than ran throughout the show. I thought it would be You Cant Do That On Television meets Broadway. This is certain to be great! Now Im not sure of everyone else feels, but I was not a fan of this show. I found it a bit boring. Perhaps thats because it was a bit over my head at the age of 6, but still, I never quite enjoyed it. My guess is that everyone else did feel the same seeing as this show only lasted two seasons on SNICK before being replaced by the legendary All That. The next hour of the block excited me, big time. Why? Because one of these shows I wasnt suppose to watch, and because the other was new!

9 PM- The Ren and Stimpy Show

Yeah, mom and dad werent the biggest fans of this one. They really didnt want us to watch it, but like every other kid, I was able to sneak it in. eventually, they gave in and let us watch it. But on this night, I still fell under the NO REN AND STIMPY rule. Mom and dad werent home though, so we watched it anyway. This show, as we all know, was an instant classic. It surprises me now a days when I watch it. To this day, I cant believe this show was on Nick. I knew at the time that it was on MTV, but that audience could relate to it. But I suppose when you are 6 years old, you see something silly and whether you get it or not, its funny. The end credits are rolling. Now we get to see a new show! I had no idea what I was in for. Honestly I dont think anyone was prepared for.

9:30 PM- Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

This show scared the living hell out of me. Oh wait, it hasnt started yet. That was only the opening credits. I remember watching those rickety swings in slow motions, and seeing that horrifying clown in the attic, along with the eerie childs giggle. And the music wasnt all that welcoming either. Worst of all, and I dont really know why, but the nights werent on in the house. It was a catch 22. my brother and I were too nervous to move, and we didnt want Nan to get up and leave us. So we were stuck.

Now I know this show had aired a pilot in 1991, but I dont remember seeing it, so as far as I was concerned, this was brand new. This show terrified me. If I remember correctly, I think it was the Tale Of The Phantom Cab episode. Two brothers got lost in the woods. The only way out was by a cab driven by Dr. Vink (with a VA VA VA).but he wont let them leave unless they answer his riddle. I loved this show. This remains one of my favorites to this day. It scared the crap out of me and never let me down. I think the biggest reason for my love of this show, was the fact that when we were kids, we had a place in Upstate New York where we spent our summer weekends. We would have campfires every Saturday night, and my dad and his friends would try and tell us ghost stories. Now, we felt like we could be the Midnight Society. In fact, when we went up there the following weekend, we actually DID refer to ourselves as the midnight society.

Id like to add as a side note that as scary as this episode was, nothing scared me as much as the Laughing In The Dark episode which aired the following weekend. This time, just for fun, my brother and I watched this alone in the dark. This was not a very good idea. As we all remember, that smart ass Josh had to go and steal the nose of Zeebo the Clown. Well Zeebo, along with his cigars, decided to pay Josh a visit. I remember when he called Josh and said Give it back! I would not go into funhouses for many years after that. Ironically enough, I was not afraid of clowns. But I think it was due to the fact that my dad took my brother and I to the Ringling Brothers show every year. It always fell on the first day of spring at Nassau Coliseum. I can taste the TGI Fridays now!

Another interesting bit of information that you may or may not have noticed as a kid: Are You Afraid of The Dark was NOT shot in the U.S. This show was Canadian. In fact, I believe it had aired for an entire year in Canada on YTV before it was shown on Nickelodeon. I know this because I recently watched the first two seasons on DVD, and noticed the accents. There was one other thing that I noticed about it- it still creeped me out. Very well written.

Then it was time for the big orange couch to go away for a few days. I remember the kids sitting on the couch clicking off a lamp and telling us they would see us next week. Then I think I Love Lucy came on. Well, they did see us next week. And the week after that, and the week after that, and so on for a number of years. SNICK was special for a kid who wasnt typically allowed to stay up late. It was the perfect end to a Saturday that kicked off with cartoons in the morning, and was a nice bridge from bedtime to Sunday morning Nicktoons. I remember, at the end of the night, being so happy that Nickelodeon decided to do this. I knew that Saturday night sleepovers would never be the same again. I ask, Remember when SNICK Premiered? What do you remember? I look forward to reading about your memories in the comments.

See you next time!

SNICK was great I don't remember if I saw the very first night of it but I remember that laughing in the dark episode from are you afraid of the dark was pretty badass. I'd still watch this stuff with my family. It was good fun for young people, I never missed it really until discovering beer!

jake and the leprechaun was the scariest are you afraid of the dark episode
BIGMercenary Posted 2 years 9 months ago
Eep, I was wrong, Halloweenie was season 2. To be honest I don't recall much of the first season. And I don't really think it was part of SNICK aside from the shorts. My timeline is all messed.
BIGMercenary Posted 2 years 9 months ago
I remember when the first Pete & Pete full episode premiered. I want to say it was the Halloweenie episode but I'm not too sure. I loved the shorts when they would come on in between regular shows and seeing it fill a time slot on Saturday night had me smiling almost the whole time (I say almost because the commercials sucked).
Episodes like when Mr. Tasty went away, when Pete's lizards died, or Y?
I dare say it was the Wonder Years for our generation.

Yes, I do. This is so funny that I came across this b/c my brother and I were just talking about Snick. I was saying how cool would it be to sit and watch the Snick Premier all over again with the kids. And yes that big orange couch was so cool.

Yeah I remember when it came on because just about ever Saturday I would go spend the night at my grandma's house and watch this on her tv considering she had cable tv, and I didn't have cable until I was in the third grade. I thought Roundhouse was okay until I realized later on it was sorta like SNL but for kids. As for Clarissa Explains it All I loved that show and I was glad that it finally came out on dvd, but my only complaint about the dvd set was that they used the wrong opening credits for 12 out of the 13 episodes on the disc. As for Are You Afraid of the Dark and Ren & Stimpy they were both really cool shows and I hope to get the respective season box sets of both shows, and at least have my original SNICK Lineup complete on dvd soon.

I didn't remember Zeebo the clown until this article. It immediately sent a chill down my spine. SNICK owned! These kids today have no idea what good childrens programming is. We had it made!

Ohmigod.. Snick was great. I only remember catching one or two Roundhouse episodes when it was on. It's All That that I remember more, with TLC doing the theme song (r.i.p. Left Eye). Ren & Stimpy - haha, I actually got my mom to buy me the first 2 seasons on dvd... it takes me back. And Are You Afraid Of The Dark? - classic. The boyfriend and I are actually in the process of downloading the entire series. The episodes I remember mostly were the one w/ the twins (Tia & Tamara) & the lizard, the one w/ the gi-normous pin ball @ the top of the escalator, the clown nose one, the vampire one definitely, and.... I'm not sure what else. Haha. The orange couch was definitely a place of memories :'(

Unfortunately, I was still in the cradle when SNICK premiered, so I have no recollection of it's earliest form, but I do remember good times watching SNICK every Saturday with my older brother. And even show that had long since left SNICK I was able to watch reruns of years afterward.
I only have vague memories of Clerissa, but I remember me and my brother enjoying it as kids.
I have a confession to make: I was never a fan of Ren & Stimpy. I know most would consider this blasphemy, but I was just never able to get into it like I did with shows like Animaniacs.
Ah, yes, Are You Afraid of the Dark. To be honest, there were only a few episodes of this that truly scared me, the ones I remember most were Laughing In The Dark, that episode were there were vampires living next door (that just made me cringe), and one episode were there was this evil jester that escaped from a comic book and made everyone laugh uncontrollably and drool blue gunk. But scary or not, that intro was one of the creepiest and unsettling ever. those swings still haunt my dreams!

I was 9 when SNICK premiered. I remember being so happy and excited that there would be a 'night time' line up for kids, just like the adults had. I really liked RoundHouse. Maybe you should look up some old episodes on youtube or something. It was made for older kids so at six I can understand you not enjoying it that much.
LoganDoe Posted 3 years 1 day ago
    Excellent article.
I, myself, find Roundhouse to be one of Nick's most underrated shows.
    So much fun.
AzumaReiji Posted 3 years 1 day ago
I remember watching the SNICK premiere way back when. Wasn't the Ren and Stimpy episode during that night the one where they were in the army?
ctuna Posted 3 years 6 days ago
This would have to be the best kids programming segment in primetime for me. I really did watch Snick until I was in high school so I missed the first two years of it but in 94 it was then when I fell in love with Snick and to this day there is nothing that compares to it and never will be. Hey are you going to do any more articles about Snick because I think it was the best from 94-98?
Fangarius Posted 3 years 7 days ago
Though all I watched was Ren & Stimpy and Are You Afraid of the Dark?, still thought SNICK was rather an excellent weekend transition from Nick to Nick-at-Nite. And was better than when Nick and A&E were sharing the same channel (remember when about seven or eight Nickelodeon would go off and A&E would come on and you'd pull a Stimpy wild take at it?).

Confidentially the real R&S controversy started when John K had aired 'Powdered Toast Man,' and one 'Kay Claire' got her knickers in a twist and demanded Nickelodeon either can John K from his own show (!) or have it pulled off the air. I always thought it odd she found this show disturbing but AYAOTD was perfectly 'acceptable.'

Apparently it's okay to show kids being endangered by psychotic clowns, vampires, ghosts and ghouls, but not showing political satire of any kind, eh?

But I digress, what made AYAOTD a bit better than Goosebumps was the fact the show was kind of like the next-gen 'The Third Eye,' or a 'Twilight Zone/Night Gallery' for kids, but without pandering to a juvenile level. And focused more on suspense than shock, not to mention it brought back the concept of campfire stories.

Great article, and thanks for the memories!
    devin_b Posted 3 years 7 days ago
Nice artical. Brought back a lot of memories. Though I never was a fan of Clarissa or Roundhouse, but then at age 10 my taste in shows was very different than it is now.

    ^ That's me, by the way.^
tjnaples Posted 3 years 8 days ago
I also had quite the crush on clarissa!
GladstoneGander Posted 3 years 8 days ago
One of these days I'm going to get a recliner chair just like the dad had in "Roundhouse." It had wheels, was motorized, and had a freakin' Bar-B-Q attached!
santalova Posted 3 years 8 days ago
Omygoodness! This brings back so many memories.
    skyluke1 Posted 3 years 8 days ago
I have to say, I really don't remember watching SNICK all that much, but great article just the same!
roofpig Posted 3 years 8 days ago
I think I was one of the few people who really didn't like Clarissa Explains it All. This is not to say, however, that I didn't madly crush on Melissa Joan Hart.
second exodous Posted 3 years 8 days ago
I wish Round House would come out on DVD, I had good memories of that show. I loved Ren and Stimpy but now I can't stand it. Are you Afraid of The Dark I've seen since and that show held up quite well.
chillygal Posted 3 years 8 days ago
clarissa explains it all and are you afraid of the dark were awesome shows! do you remember the show all that? another classic!
tjnaples Posted 3 years 8 days ago

SNICK was the highlight of my week, pizza and pop with my little brother. I liked all the shows except for roundhouse. I purchased from iTunes seasons one and two recently of Ren and Stimpy. This was a great time of my life growing up!
    comicbookfan19 Posted 3 years 9 days ago
i did not start watching snick untill ren and stimpy and are you afraid of the dark.
then i would go to bed and act like i was a sleep then my brother would come get me from saturday night live.
Hoju Koolander Posted 3 years 9 days ago
We've been waiting for a good SNICK article, well done. I recently watched some Clarissa episodes and it wasn't as good as I'd remembered, but I think that's because I was watching season one and the best episodes were in the later seasons which haven't been released.

I guess I'm the sole fan of Roundhouse (it's a lonely life). For years I've been tying to tell people about it, but nobody remembers it. First of all, I'm a sucker for any show with singing (ex. KIDS incorporated, California Dreams, etc.) but also, I loved how the sets flipped around for the different skits and some of the girls were pretty cute to my 8 year old self. Thanks for at least bringing it back into the general consciousness.
    jmay9 Posted 3 years 9 days ago
I lived on my couch for SNICK!
mikemonmouth Posted 3 years 9 days ago
i liked this article a lot. good job
    OPTIMUSFORD82 Posted 3 years 9 days ago
Thank you! Man these were great times. I'm a father now but these shows except Roundhouse, hold a very special place in my TV heart! I remember being scared as all hell when I watched Are you Affraid of the Dark. I even remember watching this first night. I was never so scared before in my life. I don't remember how old I was but I know because it was on Nick it was ok to watch, that is why we never got in trouble for Ren and Stimpy but Beavis and Butthead being on MTV would get us in trouble. Even though my kids love most of todays shows I introduce them all the time to "old school" shows. They love Ren and Stimpy and my oldest loves Are you Affraid of the Dark (even though he hasn't watched it for awhile, my wife and I got tired of him "sleep-walking" into our bed after wathing the show.

One of my favortie memories of all this was when I was a pre-teenager this was going on at the same time as TGIF. We would go to the bowling alley for lunar bowling and one tv had TGIF and the other SNIK! thanks for helping me remember those good times!
    koolaid689 Posted 3 years 9 days ago
Good article, short but to the point. I'm pretty sure I watched the premiere of Snick too but sadly I can't remember it. I used to watch it every saturday night with my mom, she loved Are You Afraid of the Dark? Everytime I think about how awesome 90's Nickelodeon was, it makes me mad that they have declined so much in quality. Thank you for writing this and jogging my memory.
