Masochistic Candy

In the 90s, our taste for sweets went sour

Can you remember the first time you tried a Cry Baby?

Unwrapping the tiny cellophane package, you popped the bubble gum ball into your mouth. The taste was sweet for just a moment.

Your tastebuds started to tingle, and the encrustred crystals began their slow torture. You beat your fist against the floor.

You glanced at the wrapper for words of encouragement: "You'll only cry for 40 seconds," it read, "so stay with it!" You tossed it away, cringing.

5 seconds...10 seconds...

20 seconds...30 seconds...

Swiftly maneuvering your tongue, you shifted the bubblegum ball from the center of your mouth and into your cheek.

Gnawing at the tiny orb, you stripped the candy of its powers in a matter of seconds. All that remained was a wad of bland bubblegum.

Trying a Tear Jerker usually yielded the same results. They were just like Cry Babies from what you could tell.

If you were anything like me, the first time you tried either of these it was tough. But you sort of built up a tolerance over time.

After a while, me and my buddy got to where we'd stuff about six Cry Babies in each cheek and have a staring contest to see who could keep from making the face.

That was about the time an obsession with all things sour
crossed the line, and I found myself utterly addicted to the glorious oral pain.

Cry Babies and Tear Jerkers, they were the real deal of course. Sometimes, though, I'd buy other types of candies to stave me over between the gumball binges.

These were good if you were at the movie theater. You could buy a bag of these, and you'd be in good shape for the film's duration.

And before any of these mouth-puckering cousins came to be in the 90s, ancestral candies like this sat on dusty shelves.

They had a mean bite to them, but nothing like our generation's Trio of Terror.

That's right...I forgot to mention the third leg of the stool. The only other type of candy that could stand up to the waves of pain brought to you by TJs and CBs.

These were not made of gum, and they didn't have that rough surface either, like the other two.

White powder coated the outside of the shiny lozenge. To look at it without the wrapper, you'd never know...

Bailing out after eating a Warhead was just as easy, except you didn't get stuck with a wad of bubble gum. It just crunched up, like regular hard candy.

Thing about all three of these candies, no matter which ones you favored...it you overdid it, it got to be too much a good thing.

You didn't know how far you'd sunk until you sat down at breakfast one morning...the previous night spent binging on tart delights.

Biting into your toast, you grabbed your jaw. Something about those sour candies, they had a way of stripping the enamel clean off your teeth.

The tooth sensitivity sort of went with the territory though. You couldn't go back to the sugary sweet if you tried.

It was tough to enjoy, say, a simple stick of bubble gum once you'd chased the dragon into territory uncharted by Starburst and Mr. Goodbar.

These days, you may still find yourself perusing the candy shelves at your local 7-11. Try as you might, you can never go back to the way things were before SOUR.

Once you got a hold of the hard stuff, it was all over with. You became a slave to the pain.

Nice article on a very original topic. To this day I'm still obsessed with Sour Patch Kids and Lemon Heads. I also remember encounters with Tear Jerkers, Cry Babies and Warheads back in the day. I'm not sure that I truly liked those candies so much as I used them a test of manhood.

I havn't had any of these candies in years but they were pretty good, except warheads I didn't like so much. In grade school we had our princlepal for reasons I can't remember put as many crybabys in his mouth as he could and I still remember that funny look on his face.

Warheads and Atomic Fireballs are some of my all time favorite candies.

I liked 'Super Lemon', a Japanese sour lemon candy. Kind of like a round Warhead, but a LOT more potent!

Just seeing the Warheads wrappers makes my tounge hurt! Good times.

Great article! I loved Warheads as a kid. For some reason the sourness used to make me nauseous if I kept the candy in my mouth for too long, but IT WAS WORTH IT! :)

Cool article. I was never a candy kid, I was a chocolate guy.

Mmm Warheads. I remember how popular they were in Elementary school. I can't find them anymore, though. I can find Sour Patch Kids though, not as popular, but I liked them a lot. Lemon Heads too, like lemonade made into candy.

Cry Baby candy was really big in my school. We'd sit there and try to put as many in our mouth as possible to see how long we could tolerate it. We also shot Binanca up our noses to see who didn't cry. Bu that is besides the point.

not only did you have sensitive teeth, but chances were good you also got canker's, but they were worth it

I remember on a few occasion eating Warheads by the bag too quickly and the flesh inside my mouth started coming off.
    palmer10 Posted 3 years 11 days ago
I used to buy Tear Jerkers by the tub. I also loved Shock Tarts despite the fact they destroyed your taste buds.

While I was never much of a fan of CryBabies, they were like a status symbol in my junior high way back when. Great article.

I loved this stuff when I was a kid. I remember Warheads also had a hot flavor too but I didn't care for them, way too much cinnamon.
SuperSpaceGirl Posted 3 years 12 days ago
Wars Heads are the most Zowrest candy, I mostly like the lemon flavor, I mean, They have Sour War Heads, Super Sour War Heads, and Extreme Sour War Heads. I wonder if they ever made Atomic Sour War Heads.

Hoju: It was truly funny the element of "danger" that we perceived as children, chomping these enamel-removing delights.

jrs1991: Agreed. It did taste like puke, sour cherry puke.

    Detox: Mmm...sour skittles.
Detox Posted 3 years 13 days ago
I tried to eat a bag of skittles sours...I could only finish it in 3 days....
    jrs1991 Posted 3 years 13 days ago
i remember the first time i had a cry baby, i thaught it tasted like puke, but i liked it.
neverland Posted 3 years 13 days ago
Adults can cheat at the sour game because they have fewer taste buds. This shit is torture for a child.
Hoju Koolander Posted 3 years 13 days ago
My childhood was all about sour candy and spicy food, actually may adult life is too. It's funny to look back now and think about how hardcore we thought we were for eating a a "dangerous" candy. I remember my Mom bought a whole tub of sour licorice once, ONCE. I downed that whole thing in a week and was never treated to that quantity of sour delights again. But what a rush!
second exodous Posted 3 years 13 days ago
As a kid I never really sought out sour candy but I always accepted it. Now-a-days I don't understand it, my Nephew won't eat candy unless its sour but I'm sure it's just a phase. I think for kids its a danger thing, a 'safe' danger thing. Also, I had a Warhead not too long ago (from my nephew) and the sour didn't last as long as I remember it, maybe it was just worse for me as a kid?
    tbondrage99 Posted 3 years 13 days ago
I loved warheads it wasn't out of the norm for me to go to the store and buy all kinds of them, after a while I got desenseatized to them and didn't find them sour anymore. A real shame but I still loved the taste of them and of course giving them to unsuspecting friends.

God, Warheads were at times intolerable. I was never able to do them as a kid. I remember one day we challenged my dad to one. He has a mouth made of iron and he was able to keep it in his mouth for like 2 minutes (although I think the flavor wore off after about one). We thought he was a god.
CaptainLou Posted 3 years 13 days ago
Great article. I remember back when they used to have HOT warheads, not just the sour ones. Those were torture.
roofpig Posted 3 years 13 days ago
Oh Warheads, how I loved you then. I can't stand sour candies anymore, though. I guess it just happens when you get old.

My grandfather actually bought my brother and I an entire tub of Goosebumps once. Those were the lesser known versions of TJs and CBs. My brother and I were in sour candy heaven.

    Great article!
