Pocket Sized Playthings

The tiny toys that rarely left my pockets as a child.

Before we carried around cell phones, iPhones, and PDA's in our pockets or purses we may have carried around a few of our favorite toys instead. There are tons of tiny toys I personally took a shining to. Some came to school with me, while others kept me company on long boring errands with my parents. Some I had completely forgotten about until now. So without further ado...

Fuzzy Bears

I'm sure you all had one of these. Tiny plastic bears covered in velvety-stuff. They were cute, fuzzy, and fit in my pocket. Done!

Polly Pocket

Polly had a good run before they made her larger than pocket sized. I remember babysitting as a teenager and playing with the kids toys. I was like "Who is this little doll?" It was a 2-3 inch tall blonde thing with removable plastic clothes. "That's Polly Pocket!" the child responded. I didn't believe her. Polly was supposed to be tiny. That's why she's called Polly freaking POCKET! Anyway, loved this toy.

Marbles

That's right, I said marbles. Got a problem? I don't know what I did with 'em but I know I had them on my person the majority of the time. I would find them on the playground and collect them in my desk at school. Apparently that would mean I'm not the only kid carrying around marbles in their pocket, right?

Koosh Balls

Fun to throw. Fun to touch. Fun to play with. Pretty much just fun. I found this a good toy to bring on a road trip. My parents liked it because it didn't make noise.

Littlest Pet Shop

Back before they made them look like Bratz dolls (don't even get me started) littlest pet shops were actually little. I had the hamster cage with two hamsters. There was "bedding" inside the cage...little colored confetti squares for them to make imaginary stools on. Oh, good times.

Water Snake

It is so plain to see the sexual innuendo of this toy now. Back then it was just good, clean, slippery fun. I remember one that I had brought along on a day of summer errands. It exploded in the car making a huge, wet, and glittery mess on the floorboards. Funny part was it was in my friends mom's car. I don't remember if she was mad or not...

Digital Pets

Maybe you had a Tamagotchi. Perhaps you went with Tiger's Giga Pet. You may even have gone for the more obscure Dinkie Dino (pictured above as RakuRaku DinoKun)...but be honest, you had one! My obsession started with the Dinkie Dino. I would stay up late, wake up early, and smuggle him into class just to keep him alive. I remember some kids at school made a business out of babysitting other kids virtual pets. What amazing little entrepreneurs these kids were. My Dino came to an early end when I accidentally dropped him into a lake. Next I went with the Digital Doggie and Compu Kitty. I never really got over Dinkie though.

McDonald's Happy Meal Toys

I'm gonna go ahead and lump these together. There were too many toys to mention, however the Bambi toys I remember specifically. They were always just the right size to secretly stash in your pocket for some serious play time. I used to have that box of transforming hotcakes. From the Teenie Beanie collection I had the Moose and Seal!

Pound Puppies (Mini)

I had a little tan and brown one named Chip. You know, like Chocolate Chip. I pretty much loved him and still think I have him somewhere.

Sanrio Erasers

Ok, so this may not actually qualify as a toy but they were really elaborate for erasers. You could technically play with them if you wanted to. Trading these between friends was a big deal in the 3rd and 4th grade. My friends had far superior collections compared to mine. Remember the plastic personalized eraser boxes? You could get them to write your name on it. It was like a little tackle box for erasers. You could even lock it up like it was some sort of valuable...

Yo-Yo's

My dad always had a Duncan Butterfly yo-yo, and for the life of me I could not work it. First of all I was too short and had to stand on the edge of a bed or counter to even get it all the way unwound. Second - I just couldn't do it. So we opted for the training wheels yo-yo: The Yomega High Performance. It had little ball bearings that kept it stabilized or balanced or what have you. It is sitting next to me right now as I type this. If I picked it up today the only trick I could do is walk the dog. It's still a fun toy though.

Micro Machines

What's smaller than a Matchbox Car? Micro Machines! I actually had that first package pictured above and my favorite was the VW Bus. When I was a teenager I tried to convince my dad my first car should be a Bus. That idea was so emphatically shot down that the dream had died until recently. Anyway, great little pocket toy for chicks and dudes alike.

25 Cent Machine Toys

"MomdadcanIhaveaquarterpleeeeeease!?!? Oooh pretty please?!" Remember seeing that toy capsule machine at the grocery store filled with sticky hands, tattoos, and plastic rings and freaking the hell out? My parents never wanted me to have the sticky hand because it "left grease marks on the walls"...or ceiling. Whatever.

Kinder Surprise

So I'm pretty sure this will be a little more obscure for most of you because this is a candy/toy combo made mostly in Europe. Once a friend of my dad brought one home for me from Europe back in the day. This was long before Nestle came out with the Wonderball (mostly filled with hard candies, not toys) so the concept was new and amazing to me. Chocolate + toy = win. Sometimes the toys that came inside the little capsule needed assembly. Great entertainment if you ask me. Anyone know why these aren't available in the US? I want one.

POGS

Too obvious. If you were a child in the 90's you had some. They were everywhere, including inside cereal boxes. The problem is I didn't know anyone who actually played the stinkin' game. We all just bought POGS and traded them. My dad made me a custom "slammer" out of wood for Christmas one year. Reeeeaaaal cool dad.

Cat's Cradle (string toy)

You didn't really need an instruction book for this one, but I got one for my Birthday one year (the one depicted above) and carried that thing everywhere with me. My best friend and I thought we were pretty cool 'cause we could do the Eiffel Tower and Witch's Broom. We were gettin' a whole lotta attitude. Give me some yarn today and I could still whip out those bad boys. True story.

Sand Animals

These were kind of a big deal. They also made them as key chains, but I found that they broke easily enough just playing with them gently. If you got the slightest pinhole prick in the fabric your little sandy friend would slowly drain its lifeblood until it was nothing but a flat floppy shell of it's former self. Sand animals were mostly reptiles or aquatic life if I remember correctly. I know these guys are probably still around somewhere. Mine was a turtle.

Jacob's Ladder

This toy amused me for far longer than it should have. It clearly has hypnotic powers over it's user. I would spend 10-15 minutes just turning it over in my hand, listening to the wood pieces slap together, and watching it change before my eyes. It was an old school toy but I liked it.

Puppy Surprise

To put it quite simply, this toy is deranged. Why my parents let me have one is beyond me. Puppy Surprise just begs children to ask mom and dad where babies come from. Or, perhaps, it gives them the answer. Babies come from a stuffed dogs Velcro womb. I'm not so sure. It was ridiculous. I included it because I actually had a fondness for the little plastic headed infant pups. The mom's Velcro vagina however gave me the creeps.

Puppy In My Pocket

Little platic puppies. My friends had more of these than I did. They were still cute. I liked them very much.

Laser Pointer

Who didn't have one of these in middle or high school? Used for their intended purpose you could enhance your presentations at work...put in the wrong hands your neighbors will think they're being tracked by a sniper rifle and your little brother could go blind. Probably one of the most confiscated items by school teachers in the late 90's. Second only to the digital pets.

Balancing Bird

Pretty random, right? Not sure where I got this toy from. I think it might have been a "toy with a message" at Church. Mine was yellow and I remember twirling around my room with it balancing on the tip of my finger. I would set it on the edge of my dresser and balance it on other very odd things, like the tip of my nose. It was a simple pleasure I suppose.

Wire Toy

I don't remember what this thing is actually called, if it even has a real name at all. It bent and folded into 5 or 10 different shapes. After the novelty wore off I think I used it to hang my earrings on. Short story: I loved this thing in middle school. Fun toy to keep your hands busy and your mind a complete blank. I found this treasure at Claire's or Icing in the mall when I was in 8th grade.

Random Bonus Thing In My Pocket:
Lip Smackers Lip Gloss

I had Dr. Pepper. It was seriously addictive.

I believe that pocket sized toys and children will never be far apart, for children need to play and use their imaginations no matter what the situation. Tiny toys always felt more secretive and exciting for me, probably because the adults were too big for them.

On that note, I'm headed to the store to pick up some Lip Smacker's lip gloss and scour the net for where I can purchase a Kinder Surprise. It looks like I may need to go to Canada. Bummer.

WTF happend to all these little things???? I'm sure I've had at least 1 of all of these things... Exept for the dog that has animals coming out of it's vagina!!! I remember I was addicted to the lip smacker and I would try one flavor wipe it off, and try other, wipe it off, and keep doing that. The Giga pets, OMG I got one for valentines day and my little hamster (hammy) was in my heart forever!!! I cry a little when I think of being in fourth grade and having all of these and going into fifth and forgetting to take 'em out of my pocket!! Good times, GOOD times!:(:(

OMG!! I at least played with, not nescescarily owned everything on this list. I owned Puppy Surprise and thought nothing of it.............now that I think about it, it's a little weird. *shudders* I actually had an armadillo, a wart hog, and a lady bug that did that too. (I won a local contest and got all three of those when I was little) It's so strange how I didn't question that babies came from the stork until I saw the Rugrats movie. LOL
arikarinyukijima Posted 2 years 5 months ago
I had a little mermaid tamagachi. *LOL* I thought my brother killed her, but she had babies or something like that. I wonder what ever happened to tamagachi. I think they would be cool in 2010.
arikarinyukijima Posted 2 years 5 months ago
I pretty much liked the same things as you did. I still love lip smackers.

wow this brings me back to my childhood, great article :)
I remember having so many pogs as a kid, and wanting to go to mcdonalds all the time to collect the happy meal toys, and when everyone in school had a tamgotchi and when it was cool to bring a yoyo to school. Thanks for shareing.

OMG! I had most of the toys on this list! Major nostalgia rush!

Like all late 80's and early 90's gals, my little purse-let was not complete without Bonne Belle Lip Smackers-- or Kissing Koolers!

Micro Machines- I remember the commercials!

Water Snakes-- I remember getting them at all my cousins' bar/bat mitzvahs and the parents shook their heads and called them Water Weenies. I was 8 and already knew the sexual innuendo involved. I still recall my aunt lending me her driving sneakers when Cousin Eric's water weenie fell out of his hands and burst on my feet, soaking my cramped Payless maryjanes to the bone.

Mini koosh balls-- I remember our dentist would let us take a small toy home if we made it through our appointments without giving them a hard time. I always picked the baby koosh balls.

Sticky Hands-- many early 90s summer vacations passed by with me and my sister fighting over one in the back seat of the car while Mom yelled at us and didn't give us any more quarters once my blue one got stuck in her hair.

Tamagotchis-- I had cheap knock-offs from OddJob (a northeast junk store staple later called Amazing Savings, now out of business I think) that never left my pockets all throughout summer 1996...I didn't get a real Tamagotchi until they waned in popularity...

...much like POGS. I remember when they were all the rage and POG-keepers. Other kids had them but they were declared uncool as soon as I owned a POG keeper full of them.

Puppy Surprise...I remember the commercials for it around 1993 or so, but mine was "Bunny Surprise"...But I do recall seeing at least one Mini Pound Puppy around somewhere! Mine was a bright orange bunny that had two pink babies and one blue baby. I remember really liking that toy. I don't think it caused as much psychological harm to my fragile psyche as the Mommy's Having A Baby doll that I based my standup routine around. (Unsurprisingly, it hailed from OddJob.)

Two that didn't make the list-- My Little Pony Petite Ponies (I was 5 years old and OBSESSED with those), and Treasure Rocks. You shook the rocks in the water, and they turned from ugly rocks to sparkly gems! A toy with little practicality and a major choking hazard for small children, but how I loved the way they made me feel like a princess with real gems.

Thanks for bringing up some great memories!

Great article, I'd actually forgotten about a couple of these things

I remember my aunt buying me Sweet Secrets, little toys with makeup inside that also transformed into animals and people!
Coltyhuxx Posted 3 years 5 months ago
I still rock the Dr. Pepper. So good. Nice article -- good and lengthy. Thumbs up!
    DirtyD1979 Posted 3 years 5 months ago
Toward the end of 9th grade everybody had pogs. I don't think any of my friends ever really played they just collected them. And oh yeah I still remember any time you watched a wrestling show in the 90s whenever a wretler would be doing a promo in the middle of the ring you saw like a zillion laser pointers on them.
mywalletsgone Posted 3 years 5 months ago
    velcro vagina...
i am a guy, so i played with mighty max, but polly pocket, shit, that's funny. POGs! i played pogs all day. i had a strawberry scented slammer with finger grips. i was enthralled by the laser pointer my dad bought me for about a year. cats go nuts for that shit.

I knew that you had to be around my sister’s age when I saw Digital Pets and Littlest Pet Shop and I was right. My sister was born in 87. Although I was eight years older, I remember her having those toys. I, however, did have Micro Machines. They were a lot of fun and the commercials were so memorable. Good topic!
    Arcee23 Posted 3 years 5 months ago
I remember those little fuzzy bears, I rememer having one holding baloons, I also had some in little boxes that were fridge magnets. Kinder Surprise was was such a big part of my childhood, I remember always wanting a Minnie Mouse in the various Disney series that they used to do. I still love them to this day and regularly buy them for my son, its such a shame that they don't do them in America.
thetwilightgamer Posted 3 years 5 months ago
This article actually has forced me to come out of comment retirement! Those Polly Pockets werent for guys, but we used to play with Mighty Max all the time, which was the guys version I guess. I actually had a digital pet, but cant remember which one. As far as Happy Meal toys, I have to say the first few Hot Wheels cars (around 1995 I think) were the best. There was one that looked like a blue Batmobile in the first set. I remember when WWE banned laser pointers back in the day around 1998 or so because if you watch old mid to late 90s broadcasts, there are a million red dots dancing around the peoples faces in the ring. I just found out my wife still has a Puppy Surprise in our spare bedroom. Ive never seen one before this article. I only had marbles for a bit, but the POGs ruled for a few years, and we played on occasion, although once someone turned over more than half the stack, the game was over. Not a very competitive game. Great article, thumbs up!

Oh my gosh, you've brought back so many precious memories for me, man! I remember playing with Polly Pocket, Pound Puppies,Fuzzy Bears, Pogs, Puppy Surprise, Balancing Bird, Puppy In My Pocket, Smackers,Sand Animals, McDonalds Toys, Giga Pets, Micro Machines, Sand Animals,Water Snake, Koosh Balls, Sanrio Erasers and Yo-Yo's all the time. :)

I was in 3rd grade when virtual pets came out. I had a what wa called a "Nano Puppy." One time my classmates and I were talking about our virtual pets, and I asked them which one of the nanos was the best. They all told me the puppy was because it was the easiest to take care of. I never had a "Giga Pet." But I did want the alien one though. Thumbs up.
    Jeff84 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
In the seventh grade I brought my Digital pet to school and someone stole it from me at lunch. Those balancing birds were a book bag mainstay for me during my elementary days as were the Pogs; I had a set of NFL ones. I had my sticky hand confiscated by my Sunday school teacher.
RetroxBunny Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Holy smokes! What a nostalgia overload!!
I really loved your article, Dork From Ork :D I remember I had (and still do) the Fuzzy Bear, but it was a kitty. There are most things I had as a child and some I remember seeing them in stores from your article. Although is it true that the U.S doesn't sell Kinder Surprise? In Canada we still do. Once again, awesome job on your article!
    trw534 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
i remember that balancing bird very weird toys
Shredzilla Posted 3 years 6 months ago
POGS!!!! Good stuff. what about mighty max? I think they sell water snakes at adult stores now too....
Dork From Ork Posted 3 years 6 months ago
There is absolutely nothing is wrong with going to Canada! I might have to because apparently all the things I want are there...but you can keep the cold temperatures. =)
Hoju Koolander Posted 3 years 6 months ago
I was watching home movies with the family the other day and we all got a big laugh out of watching my then 6 year old nieces playing with their Giga Pets. Such a weird fad!
    kenE2389 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
oh man i had a yellow balancing bird too, did you ever throw it up and try and catch it on your finger, i believe that was the next step after spinning it got boring

there really no non sexually suggestive way to play with the water snake toy, my sister ended up popping mine and hid it in a ziplock bag under my bed as opposed to throwing it out

    very nice article
SbtbNut Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Giga Pets were awesome! I remember running to Wal-Greens so I could get one. I remember Polly Pocket and there also was Mighty Max.
divinebovine Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Kinder eggs are sold here in canada, I remember growing up with them.

and whats wrong with going to canada for stuff? ;p
jackmap Posted 3 years 6 months ago
I love the micro machines - I have so many of them! I also had the pogs but I don't remember where I got them from! :-S I also wish that I knew where to get a laser pointer from... Above all - great article! :-)
Blackwind Posted 3 years 6 months ago
It should be noted that shortly after submitting this article my beloved "Dork from Ork" went out and FOUND Lip Smackers. She's begun to acquire quite a collection as well as a healthy obsession. Thumbs up baby. Love you.
Dork From Ork Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Thanks for all the comments guys! Just after submitting the article I remembered that the wire toy thing is called a "Lotus"... applepwnz it's cool that you played with girl toys 'cause I'm a girl who dabbled in guy toys, too. =) It's hard to ignore the allure of Micromachines and X-Men action figures.
    C-Boss Posted 3 years 6 months ago
    Giga Pets!!!! WIN!!!!
    Loved ur article
Glad you touched on Yo-Yo's and 25 cent toys!
Sticky hands were my fave, and still are. :D
I had many of these growing up, but... No Mighty Max?
cgimovieman Posted 3 years 6 months ago
For some reason I remember those fuzzy bears. Don't know from where. Maybe they were crappy prizes on the end of pencils that you got at arcades or Chuck-E-Cheese's. It's hard to remember now. I definitely remember Micro Machines. I have no idea why they appealed to me. I think I liked the fact that they were cars that all of their features shrunk down and not in proportion like Hot Wheels. If you remember, they were used very effectively in the movie Home Alone to take down the baddies. I admit it, yes, I did have a Koosh Ball. Mine was teal. I don't know why I had one. Probably just because they were cheap and a pop fad at the time. As for Happy Meals? Well, I will say that I haven't been to McDonald's in almost 10 years now. I'm glad and happy to say that I've wised up enough today to live a very healthly lifestyle. But back in the day the Happy Meal really ruled. I can't even remember all of the toy's they had at one point or another that I tried to collect. But a few I remember were Muppet Babies, Legos, and a few of the McDonald's characters in different vehicles. Now a few of these others I just never really understood. Pogs for instance. What amounted to miniature drink coasters with designs on them? Just not catching the attraction there. Digital pets?? Hmm, lets have all the annoyances of regular pets without actually having a real pet. Wow, THAT'S fun! (spread the sarcasm heavy). It's sort of like pagers over cell phones back in the day. Why would have have a little thing that beeps that makes me find a phone when I could just HAVE a phone! Never got the concept there. There were a million little things like these that probably drove parents nuts with their kids always asking for them. I can only hope I didn't latch on to too many of them and cause MY parents too much stress. Interesting article. I'd like to see more of these knick-knacks in another one. I had forgotten some of these.
applepwnz Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Great article!!! I had a cat's cradle and played with the girls, even though I was a guy, I just always really liked girls I guess lol (I remember being very concerned with marriage in like 3rd grade for some reason).

Kinder Surprise took over my life for a brief time when I was a child, it was a dark yet joyful time. Thumbs up!
second exodous Posted 3 years 6 months ago
I lived in Brazil for two years and got addicted to Kinder Ovos(Kinder Eggs in English). I would get a box of 24 four times over the two years and a lot of singles and 3 packs. I still have all my toys and about 100 that I haven't opened because they were doubles, tripes, or quadruples. I need to sell them on e-bay, I forgot about them until now. The chocolate I kinda got sick of, it the kind of chocolate that doesn't melt in really high temperatures. Also, at easter they have huge eggs that have a huge capsule inside that has a huge toy, huge, like the size soda can I think, maybe a little smaller. I don't think they're here in the US because once some kid almost chocked on one, like in the 70's, but the rest of the world has them, not just Europe.

    I Loved Giga Pets!!!
    dynogti81 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
I can remember shining a laser pointer in someones house and they called the cops saying they thought it was a gun laser :p Also WWF stars with red dots all over them while they were trying to be dramatic. Those laser pointers...

You can pretty much make every child of the 90's happy with an article like this. :)

The Wonderball is still around, though it is incredibly hard to find. I wrote to Nestle and they said that hardly anyone has ordered it this year. But they didn't say anything about it not being made anymore.
