A Tribute to Masculinity

Bring Back the Manliness

"The times, they are a changin"- Bob Dylan

Think back to the golden age of our fathers, when bearded men talked of football and manliness was sexy.

Males lived for the outdoors- hunting, fishing, and playing sports were all expected of a youth. Kids were given army men and matchbox cars to play with.

Here are a few questions to consider-

Why is it now that being "manly" is politically incorrect?

Nowadays, what makes a man what he is?

What is the image that we will strive to achieve in the year 2010?

Why is Chuck Norris the blunt of so many jokes?

Over the years, fashion changes. Nowadays, the rugged look is totally out.

Here's an example of this-

See the difference? One has a moustache and the other one doesn't.

Facial hair is not sexy anymore.

Body hair is not sexy anymore.

I picked up an issue of Men's Health Magazine the other day and was surprised to see a huge picture of a man shaving his chest and similar articles on why you should shave off your back hair.

I thought for sure that Men's Health would defend manhood but no; they endorsed the self-mutilation that is full body hair removal.

I remember the first time I shaved my chest.

My parents thought I was crazy, maybe even borderlying homosexual

My parents told me about what it was like when they grew up, when people were embarrassed if they couldn't grow body hair.

They reflected on the sex symbols of their time such as

Burt Reynolds

Tom Selick

Robert Redford

All of which were embodiments of the rugged outdoors

TODAY, things are quite different.

Many of us grew up during the time of the teenage girl heartthrob so-called "boy bands"

In the last few years, we've witnessed the birth of the emo culture in which rail thin guys appear more feminine via their hairstyles and eye makeup.

I'm not saying that this is for the better or worse, but there definitely is a change to be noted.

AND WHO'S TO BLAME FOR ALL THIS?

I blame this jerk right here-

Yeah that's right, a Ken doll

We never hear much about what the kind of impact the Ken doll has on young girls.

Ken isn't particular muscular, he has a kind of swimmer's build. And would you look at that... no body or facial hair whatsoever!

When little girls grow up with this image of a "handsome man" it should come at no surprise that this becomes the expectations for a man.

Nowadays it's not uncommon for men to get bikini waxes.

I hope I provided some insight into our ever-changing culture.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hit the gym, watch some football, and then comb my beard

dude i liked your article but i thought that the ken doll is not really to blame. it's the internet and technology that is making us more girly.

And now those mustaches of yore are reserved for porn stars and police parady shows.

LOL! that pic of David Hasslehoff just made my day. Great article, that Ken doll has now made me see why the Matthew Mconaughey Bashing is justified!

I shaved my legs once for the swim team finals...I buckled after hours of peer pressure. Two things...First swimming with shaved legs feels awesome and Two...I could have benefited from a bikini wax because since it was last minute and a rush job I looked like I smuggled a yeti in my speedo.

In all seriousness interesting commentary on our culture. Metrosexual is in for sure but it's not my thing.

Oddly enough, the gay bear subculture is one of the few groups that support the masculine/rugged man, facial hair and body hair alike, haha. Being a fan of "bears", zero body hair just seems so un-natural and plastic to me, well, like a doll, lol. The bikini wax fact (no matter how much I know it is true) is a bit disturbing, no man should ever put wax anywhere near that area, blech.

Too much sissiness. There's a fine line between being sensitive and being a wimp.

This has inspired me to write an article: HANSON: FROM GIRLS TO GAY HAIRDERSSERS.

If you could refrain from posting pictures of fully-shorn men stuffed into yellow speedos I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Really Bourne Ultimatum? What the hell is your deal? If you don't like the article, why would you call echidna a fag? I was entertained. Does that make me gay? You should take a walk off the side of a cliff. Awesome article "E".

I've been working on a goatee for about a month and a half and I'm not about to shave it off until spring next year when it gets warmer. I live in Ohio so that could be forever. All I'm trying to say is what's wrong with facial hair if it's properly groomed? I'm not about to shave my face for some chick and look like a fucking nancy...LOL

Interesting read. I don't know about it being the cause of Ken dolls, but okay. Yeah you should have used a picture of Robert from Jeremiah Johnson....awesome movie.
    Echidna64 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
