The Things My Mouth Misses

The edible goodies I crave, but no longer exist.

Introduction:
We all have things we wish to taste just one more time that are no longer made. This is my list of "Things My Mouth Misses". I tried to include as much of the things I could remember as possible, but obviously, I probably missed some. Some of the stuff that you would probably have on your list are things that are either still made (Dunkaroos [apparently]) and things I never tried (Crystal Pepsi). I'm sorry for that, but I hope you like what I brought into this piece. Please, enjoy yourself and joggle some screws loose and tell us what you miss.

Cocoa Frosted Flakes

I loved this stuff. It would turn your milk into a delicious chocolate milk to drink at the very end. It was basically a chocolate cornflake with frosting on it. I think they still sell it in other countries.

French Toast Crunch

Okay, who didn't eat this stuff? It was a spinoff of the always popular Cinnamon Toast Crunch and capitalized on the growing Waffle Crisp sales by Post. It was very unique when compared to CTC. It had a different texture with a smooth surface and a sugary coating instead of cinnamon and sugar grains on it. There was even a darker area on the sides of the pieces to represent a "crust". This was discontinued in the US in 2005, but is still sold in Canada.

Grand Slams Baseball Cereal

Probably the best baseball cereal to date. It was like Lucky Charms if the dog food was replaced with Kix. The sugary balls were super awesome with little red seams right on them. The marshmallows kept with the baseball theme with a red All-Star, a green baseball diamond, a blue pennant, a white home plate, an orange glove, and a yellow bat. I consider the box it came in to be probably the best thing ever made to contain cereal. I kept it for a long time as a collectible. It featured all the great players at the time on it: Mark McGuire, Frank Thomas, and Mike Piazza on the front - and Jeff Bagwell, Barry Bonds, Tino Martinez, Andres Galarraga, and Larry Walker on the back. It was shiny and had raised letters and players. Very cool and kid beckoning for 1998.

Hidden Treasures

This stuff was stuffed with goodness. The "hidden" premise was that you had no idea what flavor (cherry, orange, or grape) was in each crispy square and you had to find out by eating each one. I didn't really care for this after I found out that the place they injected the filling was always noticeable, so I just cared about the taste. It was created in 1993 with Sprinkle Spangles and discontinued in 1995.

A twin pack of the two sister cereals. I didn't enjoy Sprinkle Spangles at all. It tasted too much like that waxy feeling after eating too many sprinkles.

Pop Tarts Crunch

The king of missed cereals in my cupboard. Nothing can describe the greatness of a bowel of this stuff. Crushing up normal Pop Tarts still can't describe it, but everything was still there: the sprinkles, frosting, pastry, and filling. I was all about the strawberry flavor. I remember grabbing this cereal, putting it into a bowel with Lucky Charms (I love mixing cereals), and watching the '97 NBA Finals with Michael Jordan's final second heroics. Freaking memories, man. Freaking memories.

Breakfast Lunchables

Truly a food for a specialized palette. Not many people liked this stuff, but I would munch on it every morning in the summer of 1999 while watching the USA Network morning block (Wings, Working, Something So Right, and Boston Common). The pancakes were actually pretty good and so were the sausage patties they came with. I didn't spend a lot of time eating these, but the waffles are pretty much the ones I remember eating the most. These waffle sticks were a little dry, but that taste will go with me til I die. They both came with the sausage, some syrup, and a thing of orangeTang. The sizes of the pics above were the biggest I could find, so I thought you'd enjoy them next to my lovely Vanna White. Vanna, please show our readers what these bad boys looked like...

Doritos 3D's

You either liked these, or you didn't. Simple as that. I loved them, especially the Jalapeno Cheddar ones. The texture was slightly different than regular Doritos, almost Bugles-like. They were just a fun food product that tasted pretty good. I think they still sell these in Mexico, but not in the US.

Fruit String Thing

Really, everyone knows about these. They've had them before. They've seen the commercials, but for Christ's sake!!! It was impossible finding a pic of this stuff, and I'm sure you're surprised to find out they don't make them anymore. I had to go on an old Boxtops 4 Education website for a pic of this stuff. Anyways, the product was like a Twizzlers stuck on a piece of cardboard twisted in cool designs. Later on, they filled the spaces between the strings with Foot by the Foot type stuff. This was a staple after my Little League baseball games growing up. I'm not sure what flavors there were, but strawberry and cherry were two of them.

Gobble Sticks

Awesome snack from the '90s. These were individually wrapped hotdog sized and shaped turkey sticks. There were original, smoked, honey, and cheese flavors. The cheese one had bits of cheese inside the wiener-like snack. Mmmmmmm. I wish they still made these. I couldn't stop eating them, even at a young age. When the stick was gone, I'd slurp up the juices inside the packaging. I know, gross, but I was 10 years-old! I couldn't find a pic, so I tried my best to draw the turkey on the packaging. He was a different color depending on what flavor you had, but I decided to draw the orange Cheese turkey. I didn't remember much about him, but he did have sunglasses and was either holding up a Gobble Stick or giving you a thumbs-up! Cool, dude...

Planters PB Crisps

A highly sought after snack that unfortunately hasn't been seen on the shelves since the mid-90's. These were extremely hard to stop eating. They were peanut-shaped cookies with Planter's peanut butter in them. It was simple, but so tempting. They came in an orange pouch that enticed you to start gobbling them up. There are a lot of commercials out there to check out, even on this website. Not much to say other than that I should be eating them right now, gaining 25 more lbs.

Pop Qwiz

This was a fun product that was another one of those interactive foods. You'd place the bag into the microwave and start it up. When finished, you'd carefully open it up to find out which color you got. It tasted pretty much like your ordinary popcorn, except the dye from the coloring would get everywhere. The colors were blue, red, yellow, green, and later purple. This was like the quintessential 90's snack with all the colors on the packaging and the food.

Sodalicious "Fruit" Snacks

What a great fruit, er, I mean soda snack. It was different and had stuff that kids liked, soda. The flavors were Root Beer, Cherry Cola, and Cola. I don't remember much about it, but I remember eating it a few times. I think the thing I remember the most about it was the packaging with all the purple.

Astro Pops

Sadly, this lollipop doesn't exist anymore. I'm sure it was made for years and years, but got a bad stigma when a kid stabbed the back of his throat with one. After that, they flipped the design so the pointy end was down when eaten (seen above). I guess people didn't like eating an upside down spaceship (yeah, they were called ASTROpops) so sales plummeted. I didn't eat a lot of these, but I still remember how the Red, Green, and Yellow tasted on it.

Brach's Rocks

This is more a capsule of my childhood than a taste I miss. I got some of these in the early 90's and decided to save them in the box my rock collection I was building was in. They are probably still in there after thinking about it. The dinosaur dude was probably used to capitalize on the Dinosaur TV show craze back then. He has a letterman jacket like the eldest son in the show. I really forget how they tasted.

Gator Gum

This stuff was made for a long time, but has recently left the shelves. It was a semi-sour lemon gum that really made the mouth water. I would chew it during baseball games, along with the Big League Chew, and think I was "quenching my thirst". It was, obviously, made by Gatorade and each piece was about the size and shape of a stick of Trident Gum.

Thumb-Sucker

This was a great novelty candy in the early 90's. It was a red sucker in the shape of a thumb that was covered with another rubbery red thumb you'd slip off. Jabbed into it from the bottom was a white stick, and to keep the sugary slobber from running down to your hands was a circular piece of white paper with blue writing on it. I had a blast with these. After finishing off the sucker, I'd slip the rubber thumb onto my own and start gnawing on it. I don't know why. I never sucked my thumb, but I guess it was something to pass the time.

Wonderball

In all honesty, I don't know if this is still made. I've heard reports that it can be found in some Blockbusters. If it's still made, please send me one. This candy had everything! Chocolate? Check. Hard tart candies? Check. A surprise toy or treat? CHECK! I loved collecting the little toys inside these things. It was truly a candy for kids. Despite the fact that kids like all candies, this one catered to kids' needs.

Capri Sun Island Refreshers

This one is fairly recent, but I thought I'd mention it. I always thought that this stuff was the Capri Sun for adults. The flavors were more grown-up than Pacific Cooler or Tropical Punch from the original lineup. There was Strawberry Kiwi, Orange Dragonfruit, Lemon Tea, and Fruit Punch. The containers were a large aluminum can that held a good amount of fluid. It kept the drink cold and introduced us to that type of bottle before the beer companies came around. I loved the Orange Dragonfruit and Lemon Tea (really). The tea was different, but totally quenched my thirst. I've always been a big drinker. That explains why I loved the large size of this Capri Sun and the size of this section!

Fruitopia

How can I not mention Fruitopia? There were thousands of these vending machines everywhere. It's totally 90's! I loved the Strawberry Kiwi one. I think the most memorable thing about it is the lettering on label. It's so synonymous with the brand. This stuff is definitely not available where I'm from down here in Texas, but I've heard rumors of it selling in Canada.

Hi-C Ecto Cooler
If you loved Ghostbusters as much as me when I was younger, then you had a fridge stocked with this stuff 24/7. It was basically a green tangerine drink that always made you smile. Too many memories with this one to name them all. Great, great, GREAT retro drink with a huge following.

Hi-C in the cans

I really miss this packaging. They made it this way in the late 90's and I would slurp a can up for an entire afternoon everyday. They put these bad boys in Lunchables and in those plastic rings like beer or soda. I would go to the fridge and pull one off the rings like it was my afternoon brewsky. Let's just say that our trash was full of these things every week. I can remember drinking these while watching Cartoon Network, doodling in my drawing pads, or playing with my toys. These were always by my side back then.

Orbitz

One of the most unusual drinks ever to be made. Beautiful? Yes. Yummy? Not really, but something I miss tasting. It was a little too thick for my tastes because of the matrix in the liquid that was meant to hold up the balls. It was created in 1996, but quickly stopped production. The flavors were Raspberry Citrus, Blueberry Melon Strawberry, Pineapple Banana Cherry Coconut (yeah, a lot of flavors), Vanilla Orange, and Black Currant Berry. There was a Charlie Brown Chocolate, but I don't remember that one at all. The balls were like that found in Asian Bubble Tea, except smaller.

Pepsi Blue

Extremely good soda that ended too early. It was like a berry Sprite/soda. I loved it and the "BLUE" lettering. Very corresponding to the times. The commercial for this soda was with Papa Roach and featured the song "Time and Time Again". This drink probably met the demise of Crystal Pepsi because it associated a cola with something other than a brown color, but it really didn't taste like a cola. I wish they still made it, but it was just a fad.

Squeeze It Mystery Flavor and Fizzers

I miss the original Squeeze Its, but I especially miss the nasty tasting flavor of the Mystery Flavor. Yes, I said nasty. I still remember how it tasted and wish to get that jolt of grossness back into me before I lose it! It tasted like motor oil or rancid grape, that's how bad it was. Look wise, it was a dark, dark, dark purple in the recognizable face bottle. The Fizzers were a special Squeeze It that came with this small pellet that you would drop into the bottle to make it fizzy. Unfortunately, I could not find a pic for any of these versions of this great drink.

Super Mario Soda

This was probably the most limited released drink on this list, but everyone (to me) remembers it. I guess it came out during the Super Mario Bros. craze with the movie. The flavors were Mario Punch, Luigi Berry, Princess Toadstool Cherry, and Yoshi Apple. I loved the Yoshi and Princess ones. I can't conjure up too many memories of these, but I remember watching TV while sipping on them.

Surge

The Mac-Daddy of all missed sodas. So many good things about it, despite the myth that it shrunk the male genitalia. I'd drink it in spite of my mother's warnings and felt like a bigger kid while drinking it. I guess that's why so many of us revel in our memories with it. Quite honestly, after all the bottles and cans I gorged back then, I can't remember what it tasted like. I got the taste of Mountain Dew and Vault blocking that memory from my taste buds. More the reason to wish to try it again.

Snapple Elements

This was an awesome line from a trusted drink maker, Snapple. With witty names, cool labels, and great tastes, this one actually lasted awhile. The flavors were Velocity, Volcano, Voltage, Diet Air, Spark, and Rain. Each one had an ingredient that sort of helped in the naming of each drink.

I used to collect these bottles and fill them with water and the felt inside a highlighter to make them glow from the light of my blacklight. It was a cool way to make my room feel fricking awesome.

Whipper Snapple

Saving the best for last. This is the best drink I have ever tried, or at least smoothie imitating drink. The flavors were Peach Mango, Pineapple Orange, Strawberry Banana, and Citrus, but the flavor that I only tried and will never forget is the Orange Dream. Talk about smoothie-madness! I fell in love with it back in 1999-ish. My mom would stock the fridge with it and I'd drink it while watching Fox Family's The Basement afternoon block. Whenever we would go somewhere and my mom would let me get something to drink, this is what I'd grab. Sadly, they stopped making it and a part of me died with it.

TMNT Pizza-Crunchabungas

Consider this section a bonus. The TMNT Section! I wasn't big on the turtle video game or TV show, but the food and movies ruled my living room. Crunchabungas were a staple in our pantry. Little pizza flavored snacks with a bag covered with TMNT art. What more could you ask for?

TMNT Pudding Pies

AAAAAAHHHH!!!! Fried Green Pies! Don't be alarmed, they were pretty spectacular. Coming all wrapped in a TMNT infused exterior, you knew this stuff was gonna be good. The vanilla center was just something Hostess was not known for. They had the fruit stuff and chocolate pudding pies, but vanilla? Slap a TMNT decal on it and everyone would be pining for this stuff. I remember grabbing these things when I was really little and into the TMNT craze (sporting the T-Shirts, Velcro shoes, and all).

TMNT Slime Slurps

This is possibly the only thing still made in the entire article. Sure, these things aren't shaped into our favorite turtles (except maybe the new ones), but I'm sure they taste the same. I loved the TMNT versions when I was little. To describe how these things feel and taste in your mouth I recommend just sucking on a gummy bear and mashing it just a tad with your teeth. Take it out and inspect it. That's what these things are like. Soft, stretchy, and yummy.

Conclusion:
Thanks for reading. Hope you liked seeing some forgotten items and reading some of my memories. Now it's time to hear what you remember of these and any other foods that are no longer out there. There are countless things out there that have lost their time in our grocery stores, so start commenting. Until Next time...

Crystal Pepsi was good if I recall correctly. ANd I loved the Soda Liscious fruit snacks. Do they still make Gushers?
Thatdudeinthehoodie Posted 5 months 23 days ago
Last I checked they still make Pepsi Blue just in certain places. I would LOVE to have Pepsi Blue again along with Pepsi twist and the Pepsi summer mix.

Alot of that stuff I miss and wish they brought back.

daash Posted 6 months 22 days ago
Surely a master chef can recreate the PB crisps. This should be why people go to college.
dizzer Posted 8 months 4 days ago
Both Fruitopia and Surge are still in production in the United states. Fruitopia is all over the place in New England. I live in NH and its in every corner store and gas station. I've also seen it in MA.

As for Surge, I have recently seen it while on vacation in Florida. As of July 2012.

Other than that, great article. I had forgotten about some of these. Wish some were still around. Just think, in about 20 years we could write another article about the current stuff we eat and drink right now.

    Hi-C in a can ROCKED !!!!!!!
    Blackwar12 Posted 11 months 23 days ago
about the fruitopia thing, it's not a rumor. it's 100% true. Canadians can still buy fruitopia. i bought the blueberry stuff a few weeks ago.
ProtoMan Posted 1 year 4 days ago
Great, great article. I had totally forgotten about the Planters Crisps & the Crunchabungas. I think my favorite part was when you typed "Nothing can describe the greatness of a bowel of this stuff." instead of "bowl." A bowel-full of these items sounds like a painful health issue lol...thumbs up!

I miss Surge so bad; good article.

Ohmygooooooddd, I remember going gaga over those Whipper Snapples. Specifically drank them while playing a Rugrats video game on Playstation and watching Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. Love the mention of the Super Mario Bros sodas, I thought I'd made up the memory of them.Thank you for reminding me of my 90's munch attacks, created an account just to comment!

I agree with some of these but I liked them too.
sugarrrsmack Posted 1 year 11 months ago
Wow, I had 4gotten about some of these! Especially the Slime Slurps...& I loved them! The thumb-pops I remember as well, but there's hardly any 411 online about them! Wonderballs are still made,...as far as I know. They sell them not far from where I live-(NJ) & my kids love them.
MikeWeeszy Posted 2 years 1 month ago
I looked it up & the only place that currently still sales Surge soda is in Norway. If you really wanted it you would probably have to find a website to import it to you from there or go 2 the actual country itself; I hope this helps! ***CHEERS***

MrNostalgia Posted 2 years 10 months ago
They still sell Cocoa Frosted Flakes at the corner store, I guess I owe it to myself to try it out. And I am pretty sure Wonderballs still sell just under a different name.
MrNostalgia Posted 2 years 10 months ago

Surge exists in Norway, by the name "Urge" xD
It got the same label and color, so i guess you will have to travel overseas to get your Mac-Daddy ;)
alteredbeast Posted 3 years 2 months ago
i remember a black colored gatorade, called Midnight Rush, or something like that. best gatorade i've ever had! only had it a few times and i'm pretty sure they don't make it anymore. great article!
ThaDuke Posted 3 years 2 months ago
You totally rock, dude!! I can't believe I forgot about some of my favorite snacks. Thank you so much for reminding me of all the great things I used to love as a kid.. Ecto-Cooler HAS to be at the top of the list! Also, I'm a little disappointed you left out TMNT cereal; in my top 3 favorite cereals of all time, trailing right behind Fruity Mummy as #1.
epcotlover Posted 3 years 3 months ago
WONDERBALLS! I remember almost every time going to the store I had to get one of these. Then i never saw them again.
ChowTimer Posted 3 years 3 months ago

Oh my dear God! You guys don't have French Toast Crunch or Fruitopia! o.0 HOW DO YOU LIVE!? I think you guys also don't have the Nestle Areo bars either. But we don't have peanut butter nutella, or those coolaid plastic squeezy bottles. I miss Vanilla coke/pepsi!
    retro90ap Posted 3 years 4 months ago
wow thiis was a great article some of the thiing i didnt know about but the way you explained them really made me feel liike i did but i do remember most of the things the best one was the snapple elements i was just thinking about those aa few days ago! i remember the dragon fruit one! great article i gice it a 10!
Sokudo Ningyou Posted 3 years 4 months ago
I totally forgot about half of these amazing snacks.

Snapple Elements Rain was freaking tasty. And Volcano was pretty good too.

French Toast Crunch is only in Canada now? I must hit up some people I know who live there. I guess it's turned into Boo Berry; only select areas are awesome enough to get it.

The thumbsucker pop was hilariously weird and not exactly tasty, but oh man. The rubber was the fun part.

Those Brach's rocks kind of live on; there's another candy similar to them by Trolli, Sour Bright Rocks.

Also, am I the only one who can't find the overly large Blow Pop SOUR blue raspberry flavour anymore? I used to eat those things like food. Sooo bad for me, but sooo delicious.
BlasterMaster Posted 3 years 6 months ago
So the rumours are true. I'm in Ottawa and fruitopia is going stronger than ever. Every convenience store and grocery store in the city carries the stuff, even in 12 packs of cans, 2l cartons everything. boggles my mind to hear it wasn't around in the states anymore. Macdonalds even has the strawberry passion on tap everywhere lol. Polar opposite here man. Also, soda licious is still alive and kicking. And the great Snapple elements, god i miss that stuff.
seoirse Posted 3 years 6 months ago
The Hostess TMNT pies were the best.
    funguy10 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
You should have put something about the Green and Purple Ketchup they had about 10 years back. Also, remember Ore-Ida Funky Fries? They had, from what I could remember, blue fries, chocolate fries(not kidding!) and ring-shaped sour cream and onion flavored ones. You should have added something about those here. Also, the colored popcorn reminds me of Dragon Tales where one of Ord's favorite snacks was Dragon Corn which was giant, pink popcorn.
Cosgrove Posted 3 years 6 months ago
    AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Totally unexpected! I'd be happy with a score of 50. Thanks to all who voted. Y'all deserve something in return. A round of beer? A present? An awesome article? I don't know yet. Keep an eye out for something.

vkimo will still be champ until the end of time (at least in my heart) and NLogan's article should turn the century mark by the end of the week.

Votes are always welcomed by us writers, even if the articles are old :D
dalmatianlover Posted 3 years 6 months ago
This article still needs several more thumbs ups in order to top the highest article score in history. The Day I Went Psycho is currently at 134, and will probably continue to get higher. A Trip to the Store with Grandma is just about to hit the 100 mark, just so I'd warn you all.
Caps 2.0 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Holy cow! 100 points! This is only the second article in the history of the site to break that barrier. I don't know if I'll be the first to do so, but I say congratulations. Keep doing your thing!
    stacylee2010 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Nice article Sir you finally hit 100.
P.S. I think you are pretty cute...but don't tell your girl!
Korahn Posted 3 years 6 months ago
This article made my mouth water. I remember Sodalicious from elementary school. Damn those were tasty. Pepsi Blue - different, but I discovered that mixing it with Fireball tasted like Cinnaburst gum. I wish I could still get Cherry Pepsi/Coke here in Canada. I'll send you some French toast Crunch if you send me some cherry cola :)
    deedee082 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
Wow... I remember the mario soda and the TMNT pudding pies
chickennoo Posted 3 years 7 months ago
i wish all this stuff still exsisted even though i wasn't born when some of this came out. but i loved the blue pepsi.
Vertex Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Looks like you are going to meet vkimo's challenge of another user getting an article score of 100. Good job man you should be very proud of this one.
    J-Man Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Does anyone remember "OK Soda" or "Josta", I used to drink those when I was a wee one and know one seems to remember they exsisted. I agree with Yammez, you did eat too much sugar as a kid, but then again who didn't as a kid?
Yammez Posted 3 years 7 months ago
But, Vault IS Surge, just rebranded!

Also, I think you're addicted to high fructose corn syrup :)
    King93 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Word of advice. Never mix Pepsi and Surge. I learn the hard way
    Arcee23 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Oh my goodness!, where do I start?: Lucky Charms (they stopped doing them in the UK quite a few years back), Pretzel Flipz (ditto), Banana Bubbles (like Coco Pops but banana flavoured), all the Pop Tart flavours that they don't do over here anymore (we only have strawberry and chocolate now), Magic Balls (exactly like Wonder Balls), Dalmation bars (White Chocolate with cola flavoured candy peices in), I can't think of anymore right now, I'll have to have a think.
avoidednoids Posted 3 years 7 months ago
this site is awesome , i accidently stumbled on thus site and its awwwwwesoooommme
chillygal Posted 3 years 7 months ago
well- i'm too lazy to read all the comments- but for some of the candy- you should check CVS/pharmacy in the spring time. you'd be suprised at how many retro candies they sell. Also- try the dollar tree or other dollar stores- they have good finds sometimes
    Anubis73 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
The above post should say that I enjoyed the article.
    Anubis73 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I really this article about retro food. I did notice one thing wrong. You give credit to Vanna White in one of the pics. It is in fact Billie Piper from Doctor Who.
ZebraDonkey Posted 3 years 7 months ago
    "Anybody remember Microwave Magic milkshakes?"
Heck yea, I do!!! Even tried them once.
"I also miss New York Seltzers. They made me feel like I was a grown up when I drank them. They came in glass bottles and were clear and carbonated and came in a variety of flavors. My favorite was Black Cherry (or Raspberry.)"
I remember NY Seltzers too...it's possible my Snapple soda memory is really from NY Seltzer but I clearly remember the Walgreen's on my paper route having Snapple sodas as well as NY Seltzer.

Thanks everybody for the comments/memories/discussions. I'm really humble for this article's success and glad a lot of people were reminded of the foods of yester-year. Gives me chills that some of you remember some of this stuff. Puts a lot of things into perspective.

Again, thanks and I hope I can jostle a few more stuff for a later article. Take care, guys!

Great article love it, I loved Hidden Treasures and Sprinkle Spangles wish they both had lasted and that Slimer Hi-C was great too, most of these snacks I see I didn't know about and its no wonder why i never saw them in stores cause they didn't last long, I really love this article though and I thank you for posting up all these great snacks

    Long comment incoming!

I told myself before reading this, "Don't do it you will regret it man!" yet I did ..now the cravings start haha. There were some things on this list I had totally forgotten about like the Hidden Treasures cereal ..oh man I was in love with that stuff how could I forget. Also the PB crisps I can taste them now.

When I was growing up we ran a lodge and we had a Fruitopia machine right by our house THAT was amazing. Kiwi-strawberry was also my favorite. I didn't realize they stopped selling them ..man.

I remember Surge first coming out ..I am pretty sure I was in the 6th grade. Everyone was having a cow about it ..about how it made you so hyper! How the teachers didn't want us having it and how our parents tried to keep us from it. I actually remember being worried about drinking it worrying it would give some kind of wierd affect haha. I can still barely remember the taste.

Thank you for this GREAT article ..now I will go to sleep with visions of eating PB crisps while watching cartoons dance in my head haha.

    orbitz were good !
NintendoPower Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I can still tase the french toasty goodness of French Toast Crunch. Probably one of ym favorite cereals of all time. And they discontinued it >:( Pepsi Blue was awesome too.
edenvegan Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I also miss Fun Fruits--"the fruit with fun." They were like fruity, chewy candy-like pieces. Now all Disney show characters and Nickelodeon characters have their own version of these things. But Fun Fruits were first.

I also miss New York Seltzers. They made me feel like I was a grown up when I drank them. They came in glass bottles and were clear and carbonated and came in a variety of flavors. My favorite was Black Cherry (or Raspberry.)

*Thanks for the pictures of the Squeeze-its...very exciting!
    hobojoe44 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Well my fellow countrymen Fruitopia is in abundance here. As for the Planters PB Crisps I don't think i ever had it but I have had a generic brand version of it (that they sell at this time) which is pretty good.

They actually still have French Toast Crunch cereal here in the states! I saw a box at an Albertsons here in Seattle
Teejay Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I'm with bjc3000; I never comment on articles and in fact registered just so I could comment on this one, because it's terrific! I am also Canadian and I love French Toast Crunch - I didn't realize that it wasn't available in the US! I'm reminded of soooo many snacks I used to love and had forgotten about...
    ProphetSword1 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
This article is the worst thing to ever happen to Retro Junk. Seriously.

I mean, c'mon, with an article this awesome floating around, how in the hell can the rest of us ever hope to compete? It just isn't fair.

DUDE there was mario soda?! HOW DID I MISS THAT?!
NinjaVanish Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Good memory. I had completely forgotten about the rubber thumb. I remember the Hi-C cans were thinner than a normal can, and a standard firecracker would split the thing in two.
    bjc3000 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I never post on articles but I read them all the time on here. I must say this is one of my favorites of all time. So many things I loved on here that I forgot about like slime slurps, fruit string thing, Brach's Rocks and more. And yes I remember the thumb suckers I loved them and for some odd reason I also chewed the thumb. I'm also from Canada and fruitopia is everywhere even in Subway and Wendy's. Again I can not stress how much this article brought me back.
ZebraDonkey Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Thumbs UP! I had forgotten about some of this stuff. What I miss are the original sodas Snapple made at the very beginning of their existence. They were, IIRC, flavored seltzers. Peach was my very favorite. They came in small (16 oz?) glass bottles.

Also, I'm surprised no one caught this- in your bit on the Pop Tarts cereal, you said, "Nothing can describe the greatness of a bowel of this stuff." Further on you again used the word "bowel". I literally laughed out loud reading it, picturing a "bowel" full of cereal. I assume you meant "bowl" but, hey, some people like full bowels as well and who am I to judge?

Yea, thumbs WAY up for the memories and the first genuine laugh I've had in a long time.
archimedesjs Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Wow, i'm kind of upset that I read this article. I had completely forgotten about some of that stuff, now I REALLY want it. Particularly Pop Tarts Crunch, Sodalicious, and especially Whipper Snapple. I LOVED Whipper Snapple the first time I tasted it. Great article, really took me back.
Melmacian Posted 3 years 7 months ago
As a resident of Canada, I can tell you that Fruitopia is ubiquitous here. They sell it in bottles, cartons and juice boxes and you can't open a Canadian fridge without seeing a carton or two. Soda Licious was my favourite lunch-time snack in elementary school. I may need to buy some the next time I'm in a grocery store because, apparently, they're still sold here.
vladdt Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Thumbs up man, I sorely miss Flamin' Hot Doritos.
    bob_500000 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Up in Canada we still have: french toast crunch, lunchables, soda licious, fruitopia and super mario soda. We may have others that you mentioned that i am not aware of but we still have all the ones i listed for sure.

    Mondav87 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
A few I had never, before but most I now crave for!!(Thumbs up) Thumb suckers and TMNT slimes were the only candies i would grab when my sisters/brothers took me to the drug store. That colored popcorn was the thing to have when Friday night came around, because it was movie rental night.
gaijinninja Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I read (or at least scan though) most of the article that go on the FP. Of all the hundreds of articles here on the site and all the authors too, you are the only one who makes me think, "Wow, that's really cool... how did he do that?" Seriously... The only one.

Another very nice article. I read this one a couple of days ago and I can't remember which T.U was actually mine but just know you got a big one from me.
    DirtyD1979 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I remember Slime Slurps. I think they also made some shaped like bugs and somebody had one shaped like a giant rat. Yep a giant gummy rat. I tried Gator Gum too and it was pretty good. I think the only places that still sell it are sporting goods stores.
NLogan Posted 3 years 7 months ago

no turtles cereal? Thumb pop and french toast crunch yes!
    Units1019 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Someone mentioned the Nerds cereal. That stuff was the best tasting fruity cereal I ever had.

Some of these I remember very vividly (TMNT pies. I hate creme filled stuff. But anything with the Turtles on it I had to have)

Does anyone remember these Ninja Turtle cookies that were released around Secret of the Ooze that were basically Oreo shaped Turtles covered in green frosting? My dad took me to the grocery store to pick out any snack I wanted and I picked those. So frakkin good. I remember buying two more boxes and finishing them off in like a day or two
    kels0rly Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I remember about 98% of these things. Thanks a bunch for writing this though, because most the things i had missed as a kid, i had forgotten what it was called. You pretty much summed it all up!
GrimlockX Posted 3 years 7 months ago
    I LOVED Surge!!!!

Best soda ever in the 90's!
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Aww, I wondered what happened to those Fruit String Things! My brother and I ate them all the time when we were young, and then suddenly they were gone. When I was a little older I would try to search store aisles seeing if I could find them, now it's a little sad knowing they're gone for good. Yes, Dunkaroos still exist. They sell them in grocery stores where I live.
Spottedfeather Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Apparently, though I couldn't find anything about it, you can still find cocoa frosted flakes....if you look really hard. Wonderball, in 2004, was sold to Frankford Candy Company, but it's not listed on their website. Fruitopia Strawberry Passion is still available in the United States (branded as Minute Maid) in McDonald's fountain machines nationwide. Frutopia is still around, just called Minute Maid....something.
Retro Phil Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I remember quite a few of these. And I have eaten quite a bit of French Toast Crunch myself (yes, I live in Canada).
    primogen18 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Ah, one of the best cereals I miss isn't on this list, Rice Crispies Treat Cereal! I loved those so much! Great article though, alot of those I had forgotten and now sorely miss. That Pepsi Blue was some nasty stuff tho, IMO. I loved hidden treasures, those were so great. There was another cereal like them though, I can't remember what they were called that I loved also.
KRISE Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Pop Qwiz! We would always have this. How could you not, it was fun while watching some cartoons in the morning. lol. I was also suprised no mention of Crystal Pepsi. *BRING IT BACK, BRING IT BACK!!*
Zen Champion Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I'm kind of depressed to find out that Cocoa Frosted Flakes are no longer with us-I liked it more than Cocoa Puffs and Cocoa Pebbles. Not gonna lie I didn't really like Surge that much. That Vodka blacklight picture looks awesome. Here's something else about the Ninja Turtle Pies, Hostess brought them back and reversed them, making the outside white frosting and the inside was green colored vanilla. My all time favorite retro snacks would be the PB Crisps that you mention, the Treatzza Pizza from Dairy Queen, and my all time favorite was made by Hostess and called Chocolicious, it was basically chocolate cake with chocolate filling and chocolate sprinkles.Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Blackwind Posted 3 years 7 months ago
What? No mention of Crystal Pepsi?? At one point while living at home I used to buy my own sodas until everyone else started to drink them. So I decided to buy the colored sodas knowing full well they wouldn't touch them which of course included: Red Dr. Pepper and Pepsi Blue.

I remember the7-Up fruit snacks that were mentioned. I also think I saw Ecto Cooler recently.
Whippersnapper Posted 3 years 7 months ago
FRENCH TOAST CRUNCH! Best cereal of all time. Another reason for me to move to Canada.

And those Hi-C commercials always stuck with me. Awesome list, dude! And congrats on you and Ms. White's relationship!
cvillatoro Posted 3 years 7 months ago
good article, but that gatorade gum was nasty!!!!!!
    Nerds cereal anyone?
    asnaes1981 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
They have Fruitopia fountain at a McDonald's near my house just outside of Chattanooga, applepwnz. I hate the service(or lack thereof)there, so I don't go there much.
applepwnz Posted 3 years 7 months ago
This has got to be one of the greatest articles I've read on this site! I totally loved the Super Mario Soda lol. Around here (New England) they have fruitopia as one the fountain drinks at McDonalds, I don't like that flavor though (the strawberry one) so I've never had it to compare to the bottled version
AnOne Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Wow!!!!! Great article. Those PB Crisp were awesome. Wished I had the chance to try the Chocolate Crisp. I tried most of the stuff listed on this article, and I miss them. I can still remember how they taste. I really remember how Crystal Pepsi taste. The TMNT Slime Slurps bring back lots of memories. Thumb Suckers, I loved those darn things. Its funny how we remember how something taste even after so many years. Thumbs up for this article!!!

    Echidna64 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I love u Cosgrove.lol I had totally forgotten about Hidden Treasures cereal!!!
marcometer Posted 3 years 7 months ago
oh man I remember the Hidden Treasures well. The first time I had them was when I went to go visit my uncle in Flagstaff, AZ (I lived in Phoenix) to go sledding in the snow. Anyway my dad took me & my half-brother to pick out a cereal for the mornings. We got the Hidden Treasures, it was one of the only thing my brother and I agreed on. It was so good!
cgimovieman Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Ah, so many things come and gone. I remember PB Crisps being extremely addictive. I'm sure they weren't good for you at all, but man, it was like pure bliss to eat them. Gatorgum was also very neat. I remember it being everywhere as a kid, but as the years went by it got to be one of those things you had to grab when you saw it. It just wasn't around as much. I never drank Fruitopia much, but remember it being pretty good. If you ever watch the movie Independence Day, there's a scene in Jeff Goldblum's office where he's picking up a can to recycle. There's a huge Fruitopia machine next to him. It always reminds me of the 90's. Funny how some things stick and others go by the wayside. There was another drink made by either Coke or Pepsi called Josta as well. It was pretty good, but I think only lasted a year or two. In a related note, you can see a sign for that in the 1998 movie Godzilla in the scene in the walkways of Madison Square Garden. Oh, and in the 2002 version of The Italian Job, there's a big Pepsi Blue sign on the side of their big truck used to cover over the hole in the road near the end. Movie promotions huh crack me up sometimes, but it sort of marks time at the same time.
pizzaguy Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I miss French Toast Crunch a ton! And I totally forgot about breakfast lunchables and... woah what's with the hot chick in the picutre? Also I've been trying to remember for years what PB Crisps were called. Me and a girl used to try to remember that. Great article, bud.

This is a very comprehensive and awesome list. Definite props for the Snapple Elements pic. I still have every single label from that drink line before they switched to aluminum bottles and then just dissapeared.

Another awesome article, my mouth too misses many of these delicious things.
    devin_b Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Wow, I remember loving so many of the things listed here. I would've added that Nintendo Mario and Zelda cereal myself.
    knuclear200x Posted 3 years 7 months ago

Goodgold Posted 3 years 7 months ago

P.B. Crisps (introduced in 1992; discontinued for "being too delicious";)
    hahaha
Goodgold Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Chocolate Crisps FTW!!!!!!! I have been looking for the name of those for so long. I remember always getting them at the grocery store. Than one day I went to grab them and they were not there. I have been hunting them done ever since. Guess I'll never enjoy the taste of heaven again. The only thing that I remember that was kind of the same was the chocolate filled Koalas but they still didnt compare! Thumbs for Cosgrove, but Ultimate thumbs up for Radiation Dude. =)
    Radiation_Dude Posted 3 years 7 months ago
yes, they were the same product or snack but instead they were called Chocolate Crisps instead of PB Crisps and the only differences were the name change, they were filled with chocolate instead of peanut butter and that they came in a brown bad instead of the orange bag.

From what I remember about them they were very tasty!
Zyoura Posted 3 years 7 months ago
I pretty much remember almost every snacking treats here, especially the Wonder Balls, Fruit Roll-Ups, Hi-Ci, Doritos 3D, Thumb Suckers,Surge and Lunchables. :)

Cosgrove Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Dal: Sounds like your snacking childhood is my snacking childhood. I wish I could post all of the commercials in this article. Like what you said, some of them are as memorable as the food itself.

NinjaTendo (love the name): Glad to hear I sloshed some brain juices.

Sivart (or should I say Travis): I can taste them, too. Glad you liked it. Love the Random Retro stuff myself.

Skavery00: I indeed forgot all about Cherry 7-up fruit snacks. Those were mouth watering good. Maybe I can rumage up a part 2 with those. I suggest heading to youtube and searching for the Sodalicious commercial. That way, you'll get the the trifecta of Sodalicious ad goodness.

vvoowoowoo87: Yes, very sad, but lucky for us we found this site.

eddieizzle: If I get close to 90% out of everyone, I think I did an alright job. Thanks for the comment.

Radiation Dude: I don't remember those. Were they made by Planters? I'll have to Goggle those biotches.

Hoju: Awesome. A fellow Thumb Suckerer. I vaguely remember the Garfield version, but you are right on the money with the Sodalicious comparison to SPKs.
    C-Boss Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Surge and TMNT pudding pies... i miss it so
Hoju Koolander Posted 3 years 7 months ago
This article is destined for greatness. I used to always get a Thumb-Sucker on family road trips from gas stations. They even had Garfield shaped ones at one point, which reminds me that the Garfield fruit snacks are probably my #1 snack lost in the past. SODALICIOUSSSSS! If I remember correctly they had a Sour Patch Did type texture without the sour flavor, but they were tasty nonetheless.
    Radiation_Dude Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Hey Cosgrove, do you remember Chocolate Crisp's which were pretty much the same thing instead they were filled with chocolate instead of Peanut Butter? they were in my opinion much tastier than the Peanut Butter Filled PB Crisp's!
eddieizzle Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Nice article dude.I remember 90% of what you mentioned in your artricles.Good times..
    vvoowoowoo87 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
