The Disney Afternoon

Fond memories for children of the 90's.

I just can't bring myself down to disliking the Walt Disney Company. They've made some of the best animated movies of all time. Looking at what they're focusing on right now like Hannah Montana, High School Musical, the Jonas Brothers, and all that stuff, you would probably think that Disney had some magical moments that they forgot all about. Believe it or not, there was a time when Disney was actually really strong in the world of television. So what do you think this article is going to be about? Well, since I've done an article on Nickelodeon's Nicktoons and one on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Cartoons, I might as well make this a trilogy and do one for the Disney Afternoon.

Let me take you back to the year, 1990. Disney had just launched a syndicated weekday afternoon block called The Disney Afternoon. It was pretty much a 2-hour block consisting of animated TV series' produced by Disney. When it was first launched, where I lived it ran weekdays from 3PM to 5PM on a station called KCAL 9. Now, keep in mind, this is how it all went from where I lived, so for a lot of you, it might have been on a different station or at a different time.

1990:

The Disney Afternoon's first lineup consisted of their classic 80's shows: "Adventures of the Gummi Bears", "Duck Tales", "Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers", and a new show called "Tale Spin". Of all the shows that were ever brodcasted on the Disney Afternoon, these four are the most memorable and hold the most nostalgic value, especially with their catchy theme songs and memorable characters. I consider these four to be the "Founding Fathers" of the Disney Afternoon.

1991:

Every season of the Disney Afternoon had a slight change made to it. Normally, one old show would be dropped from the lineup in favor of a new show. For the second season, "Gummi Bears" was removed from the lineup and moved to the Disney Channel. "Duck Tales", "Chip n Dale" and "Tale Spin" all moved up a half hour earlier in the lineup, and placed in the 4:30 slot was "Darkwing Duck". "Darkwing Duck" was also being shown Saturday mornings on ABC during this season.

1992:

For the third season, "Duck Tales" was removed from the lineup and began playing weekday mornings on the same network for a couple years (this was in my area). The other three shows moved up a half hour earlier in the lineup in favor of "Goof Troop" to be placed in the 4:30 slot, which also played Saturday mornings on ABC. Most Disney Afternoon fans claim "Goof Troop" to be the last Disney Afternoon show to be considered memorable. There were some other good shows that came later, but excluding those, the next season was really where the block started going downhill.

1993:

"Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers" was removed from the lineup for the fourth season, and was never heard from again for another two years. The other three shows moved up a half hour earlier in the block, and put in the 4:30 time slot was "Bonkers", a show that sadly didn't hold the same heart or entertainment value as any of the previous Disney Afternoon shows. "Bonkers" was based on a segment from "Raw Toonage", a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon from Disney that aired on CBS in the early 90's.

1994:

The fifth season is where the Disney Afternoon started making some drastic changes. The block was given a new intro, and it's name was shortened to just TDA. For this lineup, "Tale Spin" was dropped from the lineup, and the other shows, as usual, moved up a half hour earlier in favor of a new show; this time, it was "Aladdin". Other new shows were added to this block as well. "Bonkers" was demoted to only be shown on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. So what went in the 4:00 slot on the other days? Well, on Mondays, they would show "Shnookums and Meat", which was probably Disney's least memorable series of all time, and on Fridays, they would show the dark and epic show known as "Gargoyles". "Aladdin" would also air Saturday mornings on CBS, and "Gargoyles" would later start airing Saturday mornings on ABC for "The Goliath Chronicles".

1995:

The sixth season had more drastic changes than the fifth. Now, the Disney Afternoon's slot changed. For this season, instead of airing at the usual 3-5 slot, it was now 4-6. This season opened with "Goof Troop" at 4:00. "Bonkers" played at 4:30 and was brought back up to five days a week. "Aladdin" played at 5:00. At 5:30, "Gargoyles" played Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays, they played "Timon & Pumbaa", which also aired Saturday mornings on CBS. Also during this time, the Disney Channel had a weekday block called "Block Party", which played weekdays in the early evening and showed "Darkwing Duck", "Tale Spin", "Duck Tales" and "Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers".

1996:

For the seventh season, the Disney Afternoon pretty much completely dropped their tradition and started making major changes every year from now on. Now, the block played from 3:30 to 5:30 (an unusual time). In this season, "Darkwing Duck" was brought back and played in the 3:30 time slot. "Gargoyles" aired in the 4:00 time slot, and "Aladdin" aired in the 4:30 time slot. For the 5:00 time slot, "Timon and Pumbaa" played on Mondays, "Quack Pack" played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and "The Mighty Ducks" played on Fridays. The latter two were the new shows at the time. "The Mighty Ducks" was also shown Saturday mornings on ABC. Man, Disney sure does have a thing with ducks, don't they?

1997:

For the eighth season, Disney decided to drop the "Disney Afternoon" name from the block, and just have the shows air as regular shows. This time, the block was reduced to a 90-minute block rather than a 2-hour block, and it ran from 4:00 to 5:30. This was probably the block's only lineup from after 1993 that was actually worth watching. For this season, "Duck Tales" was brought back and placed in the 4:00 time slot. In the 4:30 slot, "The Mighty Ducks" played on Mondays and Tuesdays while "Quack Pack" played on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. At 5:00, they played a new show known as "101 Dalmatians". Yeah, yeah, I know you're sick of hearing me talk about that show, but I had to mention it because it was indeed one of the Disney Afternoon shows. "101 Dalmatians" also played Saturday mornings on ABC.

1998:

When the fall of 1998 came, I was surprised to find out that the Disney Afternoon was no longer airing. According to Wikipedia, there was a ninth season, but if there was, then I just didn't know when it aired (or if it even existed). Even if I did know, it probably wouldn't have been worth it to watch it anyway. The lineup for the final season was just "101 Dalmatians", "Disney's Doug" and "Hercules". All of the aformentioned shows were being shown Saturday mornings on ABC anyway, so there really wasn't much of a point.

The Disney Afternoon officially discontinued during the first half of 1999. I guess Disney decided that they didn't really need it anymore now that they had Toon Disney. If only they would have known that Toon Disney would go downhill 5 years later and die 5 years after that. Well, for all of you who miss all these great shows, you can have some bit of comfort knowing that half of them are out on DVD, but we can only hope that in time, we'll get the other half.

This is a prettty good article. I feel that it should've been a little longer, and mabye you should've talked a little more about the shows, but you did an okay job. Thumbs up!

I loved "The Disney Afternoon". I had no idea it lasted to 1999 though. I thought it ended in '97.

My favorite of their shows has always been and always will be "Darkwing Duck". But I loved some of their other shows too.

I'd say the last memorable one was "Timon and Pumbaa". "Disney's Doug" sucked, and I don't care what you and TreyVore say, but "101 Dalmations" has got to be one of the most annoying, poorly-written, retarded, corniest excuses for a show that has ever hit the air-waves. There is no way that it's better than the movie. If anything, it's a complete disgrace to the movie. I'm sorry if that sounded rude, but that's how I feel about that crappy show. One of the worst cartoons of the '90s if you ask me.

But I still love the article.

For me, Gargoyles was the last memorable show. The last ENTIRELY good lineup was 1993. I liked Bonkers as a kid, and it still has its' charm, while Goof Troop and Alladin were and still are "okay" and I hate Disney's Doug, Timon and Pumba, Shnookums & Meat, Quack Pack, & 101 Dalmations with a passion now. Gargoyles was great, until season 3. 1994 was when it just kinda fell apart. That's when they just decided to copy what Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were doing and just starting sucking.

Out of the theme songs for these shows, I will always love DuckTales. That was probably the best theme written for a cartoon show besides Batman: The Animated Series. I also thought it was funny how a 2 or 3 of the major voice talents for Gargoyles were from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

TaleSpin is my favorite although I love DuckTales as well. DuckTales had excellent plots that revolved around mysteries which weren't resolved until the end of the episode. BUT TaleSpin had complex character dynamics, the best I've ever seen in a cartoon. The characters in TaleSpin felt like real people, very unusual for any series, much less a cartoon. To me, it's amazing how DuckTales is a great, slam dunk cartoon yet the creative team at Disney managed to perfect it with TaleSpin.

Twenty years later I can watch both and still be entertained. Can't really say that about most other things.

ProphetSword1, you're missing the point. We're talking about quality entertainment that attracts all ages, not just a 4 to 8 year-old demographic. High School Musical and the Jonas Brothers may very well be good to those who watch it, but I seriously doubt it's something that will still entertain 25-year-olds down the road. Furthermore, I kind of doubt Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers would be able to entertain 20 years down the road. On the other hand, DuckTales and TaleSpin are so timeless, they would still work as cartoons to this day. Comedy adventures (especially with dynamic characters) never get old.

Hell, I was buying Uncle Scrooge comics in the 1990s and enjoying them and they weren't a part of my generation, more like one or two generations before me.

In regards to the article, I disagree that Goof Troop was the last memorable show. I think that distinction belongs to Darkwing Duck. Goof Troop was a real letdown and the start of Disney's downward slide towards cheap, toony gag shows that lacked the actual plots and characterizations that existed in the original four Disney Afternoon shows plus Darkwing Duck. When Bonkers came out, Disney television animation imploded, with a lot of the creative teams responsible for the first four + Darkwing Duck leaving Disney. That's when Disney abandoned the adventure comedies they were really good at in order to miserably try to out-Spumco Spumco with "Shnookums and Meat" and out-Batman Batman:TAS with "Gargoyles." I thought Gargoyles was the best series after Darkwing Duck but I think they were trying too hard to compete with Batman.

Ironically, I didn't like Goof Troop yet I enjoyed A Goofy Movie. I found out later on why: the screenwriter for A Goofy Movie was the co-creator of TaleSpin, Jymn Magon.

^@ Viva Los 90s: Same here, but my dad did catch me a couple of times.
    Viva_Los_90s Posted 3 years 8 months ago
The Disney Afternoon was great. I remember coming home to catch all these cartoons. Granted, I was supposed to be doing homework, but when you had parents that got home around 6, it left pletny of time for a Disney Afternoon/ Super Mario 3 binge.
surfingthechaos Posted 3 years 8 months ago
I actually liked Quack Pack. I didn't like Goof Troop though.
    jnewman119 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
The Disney Afternoon. I would watch that with my after school bowl of cearal and strawberry quick, yeah that's right strawberry quick.
EMan Posted 3 years 8 months ago
DuckTales, Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin, ahhhh those were the days of after school programming. But when Bonkers, and other crappy Disney shows invaded the Disney Afternoon, everything went down hill from there.
TreyVore Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Very cool! I was a fan of Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck, I seldom watched Goof Troop and never cared much for TaleSpin (dunno...maybe I just never saw what the Jungle Book had to do with cargo piloting?). But yeah, Bonkers really killed it; that show was just brain cheese. I remember being crazy for Timon and Pumbaa, I have yet to see one episode of Gargoyles and the only time I ever saw Schnookums and Meat was a pasta advertisement (I was told that show was trash though).

After Timon and Pumbaa, I only also loved 101 Dalmatians too. Thumbs up, this is the writing style I remember! ;)
    Hexon.Arq Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Yeah, The Disney Afternoon was the staple of my afternoons. When you consider that it, the Fox Kids block, and Kids' WB! are no longer, it makes sense that kids would gravitate toward gangs, drugs, Internet porn and other awesome things. I mean, what else are they going to do? Go outside and play? HA!
cgimovieman Posted 3 years 8 months ago
The original Disney afternoon simply ruled. Of all the Disney cartoons I loved growing up, Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, and Tale Spin were my absolute favorites. To have them back to back to back over 2 hours of programming was the best! I never really got into the other cartoons in the later years, although Darkwing Duck and Gargoyles were pretty decent. The quality of animation in Darkwing Duck just wasn't as good as the earlier shows though. If those 4 shows were still stuck together today I'd still be watching.
    ProphetSword1 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Good article, but like all articles of this type, you assume that your generation was the best. I can't fault the article, but I will make a statement about this line:

"Believe it or not, there was a time when Disney was actually really strong in the world of television."

Apparently you haven't done any research into the kind of money that Disney is making off of things like Hannah Montana, High School Musical, and the Jonas Brothers. Or how many kids watch these shows.

Aside from that, I'm glad to see that you're finally finding your stride.
dalmatianlover Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Wow. I'm surprised how much you guys are appreciating this article. I honestly thought it was going to get sent to the back pages within the first few hours after it got posted. Maybe it's because I did the same with this article as I did with my Weird Al article: provided more facts than opinions. I appreciate the compliments, guys.

Classic afterschool viewing, I didn't have cable so it was either this or reruns of the Brady Bunch. Thumbs up.

Disney Afternoon was the stuff my childhood was made of!!!
NLogan Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Good job on your 20th or so article about Disney. I remember racing home to watch Duck Tales in 1987. D-d-d-danger, watch behind you. There's a stranger out to find you. What to do? Just grab onto some Duck Tales, Whoo-hoo!
I always liked Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers too from 1989. CCh-ch-ch-Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Ch-ch-ch-Chip 'n Dale When there's danger!
    Mister80 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Disney Afternoon! The best thing about coming home after school on weekdays back in the day. I loved the original one with Gummi Bears starting it out, but unfortunately for me I was the last kid dropped off from the bus and didn't get home until almost 3:30! So when DuckTales (my favorite) was moved to 3:00, that ended my love for TDA (I wasn't really into Darkwing Duck). Long live the original block!
    This_guy Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Prime article! I too remember the small block of cartoons before it became the Disney Afternoon. I watched all of them until they added Goof Troop, which I rarely watched. When they took off Rescue Rangers (that was my shiznit!) and added Bonkers I gave up on TDA.

I used to jump on the couch when TDA started and actually felt sad when it ended for the day.
Anaweiser Posted 3 years 8 months ago
This was great I used to love watching these shows from 3-5 then go out once it cooled off a bit, Ducktales still holds up when i watch it even today. I have to agree that Bonkers was no where near up to par with the rest of the shows, once Bonkers was in the Mix and there was already Ducktales they lost me as fan, bust still some great memories...
TheyCallMeBruce Posted 3 years 8 months ago
I love those Disney cartoons, but how could we give no mention to The Wuzzles? I think I have a Rhinokey stuffed toy around here somewhere.
    SuperK1979 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Great article!!! Def a thumbs up! I am glad to see that you put a blurb at the beginning of your article to let the reader know that Disney had a small block before 1990 with Ducktales, Gummy Bears, and Chip and Dale (I remember when Gummy Bears and Ducktales were on together in 1988). I stopped watching the Disney Block after school when they put Goof Troop in...(I was turning 13 or 14 and in my opinion Goof Troop sucked ass!). But I like these kinds of blocks made by the same studio (Family Guy, American Dad, Cleveland Show).
    Retrogamer92 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Huge thumbs up! I love all of those old Disney shows. I never really saw them on the actual Disney Afternoon, but I saw them on Toon Disney and I have to say it was the coolest channel on TV in its time.
Hoju Koolander Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Finally, an article I can relate to. I remember rushing over to my friend Bret's house after school and watching the first season of the Disney Afternoon, it was big deal. Chip N' Dales Rescue Rangers was my favorite, much love to Monterey Jack.

Disneyland even re-themed parts of the park as the Disney Afternoon with the Autopia being a Rescue Rangers race car ride and The now defunct boats by the Matterhorn as a Gummy Bears boat ride. I remember how psyched I was to get Darkwing Duck and Launchpad's autographs (I still have the book I made). And who knew that 10 years later I would dressing as Goofy and giving autographs myself!

I stopped watching after Bonkers crappified the line-up.

I actually remember the 1996 Disney Afternoon lineup. Nice article dude!
horrorfandude Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Was the afternoon block on ABC? Becuase I didn't have Disney Channel when I was a little kid. I do however remember 101 dalmations and duck tales being on in the aftnernoon after school, but of course I never watched those shows.
MrCleveland Posted 3 years 8 months ago
You should do one for KidsWB!

And I would like to see if NC has done this too.

Hello, I'm the Nostalgia Critic. I remember it, so you don't have to!

Thumbs up for mentioning Talespin. That's my absolute favorite show from the past.
