I Like Spongebob Squarepants

My celebration of a divisive cartoon.

I'm well-known for making controversial statements in my articles. I've stated that I thought that Johnny Depp was a better Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder. I've stated that I think that Courtney Love is a better actress than singer. I compared 00s music favorably to older music and ended up with two articles that not only share the dubious distinction of being my lowest-rated pieces for this site, but even caused people who normally like my articles to think that I lost my way temporarily.

Now it's time to stir things up once more by saying:

I think that "SpongeBob SquarePants" is a very enjoyable, very funny and very watchable show.

There have to be at least 10 articles attacking this show in all sorts of ways. I feel these attacks are often made without any reason other than "Waa Waa, Boo Hoo, Bring back Rugrats".

Look, I'm not saying that shows like "Rugrats" and "Doug" are bad. For me, though, these show evoke rather unpleasant memories. These shows were popular during some very unpleasant times in my life. From 1992 to 1999, things were extremely hard to deal with. Vicious attacks by fellow students, delving into psychogical issues and their effects on myself and others, just hoping for things to get better.

In 1999, though, things started changing for the better. I left Boy Scouts for good, my friendship with Alex (who was mentioned in my article "5 Nice High School Memories") was starting to solidify, and I applied for my first job, which I would begin shortly after January 1st, 2000.

"SpongeBob Squarepants" also debuted in 1999, but I didn't really start paying attention to it until 2001. That year, I had what I called my Lost Summer. I was having assorted issues related to my medication and my personal behavior, at one point getting so angry over something I read online that I ran into the computer room wall and left a hole in it the size of my body. Although it's been repaired, I still need to pay my Mom for it. I'll get to it someday. At another point, I had a belated high school graduation party that I ended up sleeping through, thus missing a chance to see some friends and family for the last time.

At one point during the Summer of 2001, I purchased a T-shirt with a picture of SpongeBob surfing.

This is the closest I could find to an image of it. It managed to fit me even as I gained the freshman 15 during my brief time in college. I lost the shirt somewhere along the line. I probably got too big for it, but it was a nice shirt. No one made fun of it...Actually, no one really paid any mind to it. Still, the few that noticed it didn't make fun of me. That was nice to hear.

"SpongeBob..." also figured in another part of my life. I applied for my job at Wal-Mart in April of 2002. I had to drive to their medical outfit to take a physical. When my Mom and I arrived there, I had forgotten my I.D card. I recall that "The Oprah Winfrey Show" was playing on TV when we arrived there.

Having forgotten the I.D, we had to go back home (which took about 45 minutes or so). I got my I.D and my brother tagged along. When we got back there for the physical, an episode of "SpongeBob Squarepants" was airing on the TV.

I don't know if it was a positive omen, but I've held my job for over 7 years now. It seems like there might have been some sort of connection. I only wish I could put it in more concrete terms.

I can say this, though: I see a little of myself in SpongeBob. Like him, I'm a diligent worker surrounded by people who are either concerned for themselves or don't give a damn about what they do. SpongeBob's analogues in that case are, respectively, Mr. Krabs and Squidward.

Everyone at Wal-Mart is concerned with money, like Krabs is, but most people I work with hate their jobs, much like Squidward does. I've talked about people like this in several of my previous articles. The way I see it, you should make the best of what your job is. SpongeBob Squarepants is always cheerful when he does his job. I make efforts to be the same way. Am I always upbeat? No, but I'm not one to call the place "Wally World" or complain about the pay or anything. This is a bad economy we're in, so feel lucky that you have a job. I know that I do.

Also, like the show itself, I've managed to talk to many famous people, ranging from acting talents to singers. SpongeBob, similarly, has featured a great variety of famous people doing guest voices. People ranging from David Bowie to Ray Liotta have done guest work on the show.

It's something for both kids and adults...It's a rather sophisticated show in its' own way. Is there gross-out humor? Sure there is, but I think haters of this show have selective memories. Many here wax orgasmic about "Ren & Stimpy", and there was toilet humor in most every episode of that show. Why is that show held in high regard, but SpongeBob is decried as something evil?

Finally, like the character and the show alike, I've always tried to show respect to the people around me. I haven't seen that on many other cartoons. Some have said that the character of Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons" is a representative of how the creators of that show view many of their fans, and "Animaniacs" had an infamous short called "The Please, Please, Please Get A Life Foundation", which I view as the creators of "Animaniacs" telling their fans to play a game of "Hide And Go Fuck Yourself". In all the episodes of "SpongeBob..." that I've seen, there's never been any of that spite. There's always been a great respect for the viewers.

In a way, we're all characters and the people around us can be seen as viewers. All we can try and do is put on a good show and just do the best thing possible.

"SpongeBob SquarePants" has been doing that for over 10 years now, and I'll gladly watch it at anytime. For those of you who think that the show has a stupid premise, people were probably saying the same thing about shows with talking babies and animals in love with their various body functions. Give everything a chance...You never know what you might find.

Happy Birthday, SpongeBob!

Now the floor is open for discussions:

Am I the only one on here who enjoys watching "SpongeBob SquarePants"? What's with all the hatred for the show? Would the people who hate be willing to give it another chance?

Thank you! I salute you, my good sir/ma'am! You're article is wonderful, though some of the episodes are'nt as good as the older ones, I still watch them xD I grew up a spongebob fan, so has my little brother, and my youngest brother. This article really speaks to me :D

I gave you a thumbs up for the article. While I'm not a big fan of Spongebob, I respect that you wrote an article with lots of comparisons which do make sense. As a kid, I enjoyed Ren & Stimpy but as an adult, not so much. I think I only wanted to watch it as a kid because my parents didn't want me to lol. As for my opinions on Spongebob, it's an ok show but, working retail myself, I get very tired of seeing Nickelodeon merchandise the heck out of it. I understand that any company wants to make money and any network wants to make money on their company-owned properties, but really, I think the only reason I personally am not a huge fan is just because I see Spongebob everywhere and on everything lol. You raise good points about it though so thumbs up!

I liked the first three seasons prior to the movie, but episodes after that became very hit or miss. Some were funny, others just..ugh. My nan banned me from watching it at her house because she hated listening to Spongebob's laugh! XD

Spongebob is one of the craziest shows evere. Sometimes it is cute and look's like something for small children. And sometimes the go crazy as a bucket of acid and crack, witch make it look like somethinf for the older guys and girls like moste of use :)
    Applejuice13 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
used to like the show until they changed his voice . he sounds gay now.
    Nails105 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
    Cute show.

My fav all time nick shows are a 3-way tie... spongebob, rocko's modern life and ren & stimpy.
CaptainLou Posted 3 years 9 months ago
There's one fundamental reason why I thoroughly enjoy SpongeBob. The writers of SpongeBob do the same thing that Disney animated films writers do -- they make it 'family-friendly' while putting certain adult overtones and references in the background that kids may or may not get. It's a well written cartoon that everyone can enjoy if they give it a chance.

Spongebob is my all time favorite Nickelodeon show.

Nice article, and a fun show. I enjoy it when I get the chance to see it; my wife and I even caught some of the anniversary marathon from our hotel room while we were having some downtime at Otakon.

I was with you and read until you said you thought Depp was a better Wonka. SpongeBob is a great show though.
TreyVore Posted 3 years 9 months ago
It certainly is a mood-lifting show.

Good job, thumbs up from me. :)

    Horrible article
    Arcee23 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I love Spongebob, I got into it in about 2005 when I started watching it with my then 6 month old son, we both still watch it almost everyday. Also I agree with what you said about Johnny Depp being a better Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder.

i used to watch spongebob squarepants all the time in the 2000s, i still enjoy it sometimes but i grew up with hey arnold, Doug, rugrats, those are classic, but i like spongebob and i hope they have a lot more shows coming
Shepard of Suburbia Posted 3 years 9 months ago
Well it's a good article I'll admit. Honestly though I realy hate Spongebob it's just such an obnoxious cartoon that gets too much publicity(My mom says the same thing.

I don't really watch cartoons anymore (Except for some anime.), but right now I really wanna see something like Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, and my all time favorite HEY ARNOLD! (No nicktoon was more entertaining than Arnold).
Benjanime Posted 3 years 9 months ago
    thumbs down detected!
    manning313 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
SpongeBob is hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes it can be unexpectedly funny and cleverly written, and then there are times it can be downright freakin' annoying.
EMan Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I hate this show. I still don't get why it's even on the air for more than 10 years now. Give me Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko's Modern Life anytime over this trash.
    JupiterAH2 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I love SpongeBob. I can watch that show for hours on end and not get sick of it (I have up to season 4 on DVD). The wackiness of it is appealing to me for some reason. I also like how every character is literally bursting with their own characteristics and personality. Nothing is bland. I've always had a taste for high energy characters and cartoons.

My dad loves SpongeBob too (he's 54). We quiz eachother with SpongeBob trivia. XD
Saltychuck Posted 3 years 9 months ago
Well, let's just say I respect your opinion. I don't really watch too much new tv anymore. I was 8 when Spongebob came out, and I already felt just about too old for it. I guess that, at least it has a point sometimes, and it can be funny.
NintendoPower Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I enjoyed Spongebob the first season the most because the episode are funny, inventive, and not too crazy. Now Spongebob to me is just crazy nonsense on screen. The plots are just stupid and childish, and it's unappealing. I respect your opinion, but to me Spongebob died after the movie was made.

Watch how DL's gonna fall to mercy, change his mind about the rating and article, and apologize and says that he sees the error of his ways that it was a decent article after all. Deja freakin' vu man.

Dalmation, if you want to see what "epic fail" looks like, go read over the crap you try and pass off as good articles. Now go back to bed and ask mommy to tuck you in with your Donald Duck pajamas.
    ProphetSword1 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
    To dalmationlover:
The article isn't an "epic fail." For that to happen, it would have to be on the back page with a score of around -20. For reference, check some of your own articles.

Also, Spongebob counts as retro. He started in 1999, even if he's still on the air. It's like saying "The Simpsons" aren't the least bit retro because they're still putting out new episodes.

If anything is an "epic fail," it's your comments.

I like Spongebob too. But after a loooong hiatus with nothing but Cartoon network, I watched the new episodes during the Spongebash Marathon two weeks from today. I noticed the episodes didn't feel new at all. Most of them were about Plankton vs. the Krusty Krab, or Squidward being screwed over once again, and not much seems to have changed. Everyone still lives the same lives and aren't really doing anything else. But I still acknowledge its existence

Spongebob seems like one of the last shows to have that Nickelodeon feel to it. Sure it's popular, he's everywhere at my local amusement park (and even has several rides based on him) but I actually enjoy the Spongebob cartoons.

Spongebob and Patrick's relation if you want to say does seem to show while it is not actually said...I remember some huge thing back then about the 2 being...I guess someone must have been bored and wanted to make a ginormous thing out of it.
dalmatianlover Posted 3 years 9 months ago
You've just written an epic fail of an article, discussing an overrated franchise that is nowhere near retro. To answer your question, I hate Spongebob, but I think there are more fans of the show than there are haters. I don't care what anyone else thinks, but this article is not worthy of a thumbs up from me.
Spottedfeather Posted 3 years 9 months ago
Does anyone else think that Spongebob may be retarded ? I mean, look at him. Would someone who isn't retarded act like that ? I love the show, but this is something that I always think about. I don't know the Bikini Bottom laws, but Spongebob is seen driving. Wouldn't he have to be about 16, then ? But if he was sixteen, how is he living on his own ? So, I think he has to be about 18 or so.
Retro Phil Posted 3 years 9 months ago
SpongeBob is an awesome show. Though I do like older shows too.
Hoju Koolander Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I have never watched the show and have no interest, but I think you've made a very good point about the fact that pretty much any kids cartoon in any era is stupid to somebody. I love the Muppet Babies, but only because it's like comfort food remembering the many hours I spent on Saturday mornings watching it with 5 year old eyes. In reality it's a pretty lame show. So I say to you,Caps, Spongebob on!
    Avengerz23 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
spongebob is raw yeah i'll give em that....But,sometimes i wonder aout him and patrick....I mean its cool hanging out with ya best friend every now and then....The way he hang out with patrick is kinda eyebrow raising isn't it......I also feel sorry for squidward cause they're regular daily planner is 2 bother him everyday......
ZebraDonkey Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I'm 36, with no kids, and I like Spongebob. Most of the adults I know also enjoy it. It's one of the few shows they can watch with their kids and be entertained. For the kids it's got the wackiness and there are plenty of "wink wink, nudge nudge" moments for adults. I enjoyed the article because it was less about Spongebob and more about what Spongebob means to you and why. That makes it completely unique. Thumbs up
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
^I think you're thinking of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. Great show.
Ninja Turtle 777 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
"Hide and go fuck yourself" hahaha I have never heard that before. Im using it now first thing I get. Nicely done. A show similar to Spongebob that is even more current is called The Misadventures of Captain Flapjack. It is pretty funny man check it out. I also enjoy a show called Blues Imaginary Friends..I think thats what its called.
    ProphetSword1 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I definitely love Spongebob. I never did quite understand the hatred on this site toward him and why he is always singled out by those who whine about the lost era of Nickelodeon. If anything, Spongebob is like a throwback to an era where cartoons were funny and well written. And I love that the show is played for laughs rather than trying to cram an "important message" down kids' throats.

In ten years time, there will be a lot of Spongebob love on this site, as kids from this era enter college and start writing about their favorite cartoons...
sivart Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I still like Spongebob and if I had to choose between it and some of the older Nicktoons like Dough or Rugrats I would choose the little yellow sponge anyday. I liked Doug and Rugrats but Spongebob is just so easy to sit down and watch. Great show, great characters and a great article about them. Thumbs up.
twinkiethekid Posted 3 years 9 months ago
Spongebob is a great show. Give me SB over all the old Nicktoons any day (and that includes Ren and Stimpy). Yeah, that's right -- I said it.
second exodous Posted 3 years 9 months ago
Spongebob is one of the only 'new' cartoons that I like. I was right out of high school when it came out. It seems like so many cartoons now-a-days are only half thought out and really low budget. Spongebob is well thought out and the animation is great. I think this and Invader Zim were the only Nicktoons I watched when I was in High School and after. This is one of the only 'kid' cartoons that older people watch, no swearing or adult themes, like Adult Swim, but still really funny for an older audience. That is a testament to Spongebob right there.
    tbondrage99 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
I've always like Spongebob, if a show is a good then its good, I don't care if it was debuted after 1999 when the Y2K bug instead of bringing the world to an end just wiped out all the small things we enjoyed in life, or so some people on this site might have you believe. Thumbs up from me.
Benjanime Posted 3 years 9 months ago
forgot to mention, there's been a few rumors going around about the date on spongebob's driver's license in the dream episode. debate has gone around that the 2010 date on it will also be the same time that the show will end. not much has been said about the rumor now, so we just have to wait and hope for the best that it stays on tv
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 9 months ago
*applauds* Well said, Caps. I love the style of your writing, and you made a lot of good points. I was a huge fan of Spongebob when I was younger, and I still like the older episodes and the movie, but I personally think the show started to get milked from then on. Still, thumbs up from me =)
Benjanime Posted 3 years 9 months ago
i still watch episodes of this show from time to time when i can. sure the new episodes aren't as original as the past ones, but that's just it. writers of a show will be interested in doing the writing for one show, then they'll move on to another. i was stunned seeing the 10th anniversary documentary of spongebob, as most of the staff were there to talk about the show's popularity and the impact it had on nickelodeon and kids from all over the world. spongebob will be remembered for a long time, and that's saying alot. great article caps, thumbs up
