Earth Girls Are Easy (1988)

Directed by: Julian Temple

Starring: Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans, Jim Carrey, Charles Rocket, Julie Brown, Michael McKean

Looks like someone is ready for Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

What's the main reason aliens want to invade our planet? Do they want to destroy it? Or do they just simply want to have fun?

"Earth Girls Are Easy" is a movie that's so goofy, so stupid, so cheesy, that you have no choice but to appreciate the badness. This is just a regular silly 80's film with cool-looking visuals and catchy songs. Yeah, the film has songs. Think of this film as an early "High School Musical", except that it doesn't suck and that it has more memorable songs and characters.

It's time for "Bowling For Ticked-Off Fiances"!

It's suprising, because the film was directed by a music video director, and as we all know, music video directors can make some cheesy music videos, but strangely makes successful feature-length films.

Below would be an example:

Directed by music-video director Spike Jonze

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

A young manicurist named Valerie (Davis, in a engaging performance) encounters three hairy aliens (Goldblum, Wayans, and Carrey in a early role). The three aliens simply want to learn more about Earth's entertainment, romance, and lots more. Eventually, Valerie falls in love with the alien leader and must decide whether to stay on Earth or to fly away with the three aliens back to their home planet.

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT?

As I mentioned before, Davis' performance is simply wonderful. She isn't too goofy or too serious, she's just right. The songs are incredibly catchy, as well. I don't know if they were meant to be funny, but they're surely better than the songs in "Camp Rock" or "High School Musical". The aliens are funny, too, especially Carrey and Wayans, who steal the show. If they only made better films nowadays....

WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT?

The only thing that's bad about this flick is that the quick sex scene between Valerie and the alien leader Goldblum was quite weird. It's nothing you can't handle, just innocent PG-rated sex, it's just....well, weird.

Another sour nitpick is that it's a tad too long (100 minutes). When a movie is too long, the story and humour run out of gas eventually.

"My precioussssss....."

Turns out aliens are handy for storing eggs....in their mouths.

"Damn, those aliens are movin' in...there goes the neighbourhood."

BOTTOM LINE:

Definately check it out. It's goofy, but it's a likable kind of goofy. Hopefully it'll tell you that aliens are quite nice. Sigh....if they only existed....
