Happy Meal Toys

The real reason we kids went to McDonalds

We now join this weeks episode of Happy Meal Treasure Hunters, already in progress:

"Standard procedure is to wait a few minutes before going inside the box because the high temperature of the surrounding grease-soaked meat and potato products, but I'm about to wet my pants with anticipation so we're just going in"

"Lower him down. Whoa Billy, watch out there. I think I see a stray pickle slice and one of those overcooked, pointy brown French fries to the left. That'll spoil your day. Good thing you're on the harness 'cause it looks like the grease has just about eaten through the bottom of the box. What's that? You got it? Alrighty bring him back up now, let's see what he's got."

"I think it's ...Yes, it IS! It's a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man pencil sharpener. Just look at it. I don't care for school, but this little beauty is going to have me writing multiple book reports just so I have an excuse to sharpen my pencil. Okay, get the plastic bag opened and let's start playing."

Happy Meals: Burger, fries and a toy. Although in order of kid importance the list reads: Toy, fries and maybe the burger, but just because Mom says you have to at least eat half of it if you want to go play on the slide. I can't tell you how many Happy Meals I consumed during my younger years (though most of them featured McNuggets in lieu of burgers), but I can tell you about the toys. And so it goes...

The earliest Happy Meal toys I remember holding in my stubby little hands were a series of cars from 1985. Now these were not the lame-o Hot Wheels they do nowadays (sorry Cosgrove), these were tiny automobiles of varying types driven by the McDonaldland characters themselves. According to the picture above there were four to choose from: Ronald McDonald Runabout, Big Mac Squad Car, Hamburglar Roadster and the Birdie The Early Bird Sun Cruiser.

I could have sworn there was a Grimace car, but maybe that was from a later series. Most clearly I remember racing Birdie in her pink convertible against the Hamburglar in his roadster. The Hamburglar's car was so light that it had a hard time driving in a straight line which meant Birdie usually came out victorious. Boy did they move though, with their built in pull back and go action those things would really fly across the dining room table. I think what kept them from breaking into a million pieces was that they were made by Ertl, famous for those sturdy metal dump trucks.

It seemed like back then McDonalds wasn't doing a lot of licensing because the next set of toys I got, while not featuring the McDonaldland characters, was still centered around the restaurants own creations. Yes, if you opened a Happy Meal box in 1987, you were very likely to find small plastic McDonalds menu items that changed into robots or robots that changed into McDonalds menu items depending on your point of view (kind of a chicken or the egg type deal).

The Changeables could be classified as Transformers meets Food Fighters (remember those?) but there was something that made them special in their own right, they were almost perfect re-creations of the items they represented. I can't tell you how many times I was tempted to take a sip from the chocolate milk shake cup (at least that was what I imagined was inside) or lift the mock-styrofoam Big Mac container for a quick snack. The transformation were simple and what was found inside could barely claim to be a robot, but for me each Changeable made it's individual food packaging into an iconic piece of Americana that to this day I consider the "classic" look for each item.

Before we move on to the much more popular movie and TV inspired toys, I do have one more fond memory of a classic happy meal prize that sprung from the mind of Ronald and the MickeyD's marketing department. The final McDonalds themed toys I remember getting excited about were inspired by the coolest piano playing, sunglass wearing, jazzy lounge singing, Half Moon-headed man to ever shill for a fast food restaurant. Ladies and gentleman, it's Mac Tonight.

When I was a kid I was in awe of Mac and his catchy lyrical hook, "At McDonalds, it's Mac Toniiiiiiiight!" So when he made the jump from commercials to toys, I was pretty excited. From a look at the toys I soon learned that when away from the piano Mac enjoyed motor sports that ranged from motorcycling and off-roading to jet skiing and testing experimental rocket planes. Also, according to the picture below, Mac has taken a page out of Sadaam Hussein's book and hired himself some doubles to trick any would-be assassins from Burger King.

I think my favorite was the tux and sport car combo that made it look like Mac could have starred in his own series of secret agent films. Can't you see it? Mac would constantly be battling the Hamburglar in movies with titles like "You Only Robble Twice" or "Robblefinger". Now there's a What if... article topic for ya!

Once McDonalds tapped into the licensed Happy Meal toy idea, however, the suits pretty much left Ronald and his McDonaldland pals in the dust and watched the money roll in. You can't really blame them, I mean what's going to get more kids begging for burgers: a beloved star of film and television or a bunch of deformed misfits whose every waking moment is spent in the pursuit of sodium-laced meat and spuds? You have chosen correctly. If I know my happy meal history the first licensing was done for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, but since I wasn't around at that point the first characters I experienced jumping from the TV screen to my Happy Meal were the Muppet Babies.

I was hopelessly devoted to this show. In fact most of my surviving childhood taped-off-TV-VHS tapes are made up of Muppet Babies episodes. Even as a kid I appreciated the quality of these figures, the likenesses were spot-on and each one had a nice heft to it (kid translation: Heavy = Quality). I only owned Kermit, Fozzy and Gonzo (my favorite) but that was fine because Kermit's skateboard and Gonzo's big wheel were the best vehicles anyway. The toys were about the same size at the Smurf figurines, so it was fun to have a Smurf/Muppet Babies crossover every once and a while. I just realized Gonzo was blue and so were the Smurfs! I wonder if Weirdos were an offshoot of the Smurf race that got banished from the village because they were hogging Smurfberries which led to a vengeful sneak attack in the middle of the night, decimating the once peaceful Smurf village.

Take that Papa Smurf! But getting back to the topic at hand, with Disney re-releasing their classic films in theaters for the new generation to enjoy, it was only a matter of time before toys of their beloved characters began showing up the Golden Arches.

The first Disney film toys I remember were inspired by that forest-burning classic, Bambi. I had been reading (well, had read to me) a giant Bambi storybook for years so I knew what it was all about, I didn't need no movie to tell me how to play with these figures. I got down to the local McDonalds lickety-split (we just don't do enough things lickety-split these days) and collected the whole series.

It always struck me as odd that they bothered to mold two different Thumpers but no Bambi's Mom. I mean, it could have had a feature where when you put it in cold water the figure color changed to black simulating her charred corpse-Think, Ronald, Think! What they really should have done was produce the two fighting deers that bash their heads together and had break away antler action-SWEET! But what we got was okay too. Like the Muppet Babies these figures were also pretty solid and didn't break easily. They were however given to melting, which is what ended up being their ultimate fate as I tortured Bambi and friends with makeshift bonfires in a pie tin...precious memories.

I'd have to say my favorite Happy Meal toy of all time received my neverending praise simply because it tread ground that expanded the reaches of my imagination. I distinctly remember the details of the night I obtained this treasured prize. Our usual McDonalds was a Sherlock Holmes themed restaurant, that is, it had faux Sherlock memorabilia in display cases and framed movie stills from silver screen incarnations of the famous detective. It also had a nice play place filed with Ronald McDonald and Apple Pie Tree statues, as well as ride-on creatures that looked like Hamburger Horses and Fry Guys. But by 1991 a new theme was all the rage: 50's Diners!

We had been driving by the Doo-Wop era MickeyD's for a few weeks and I was dying to go inside and check it out, but Mom was a little slow on the uptake (or maybe I wasn't whining loud enough). So I had to wait until one night after school when I was hanging out with my friend Erik playing with G.I. Joes in his waterfall Jacuzzi (a totally awesome playset!). Erik's Mom must have picked up on my telepathic messages about McDonalds and said she was going to take us out for dinner-YES!

As we walked in I remember the gleaming white of the ceramic countertops and floors blinded me while a model of a classic 50's car-hop diner in a glass case kept me mesmerized. It was quite a contrast to the natural wood paneling and dingy atmosphere of "McSherlocks". We soon got our Happy Meals and even though I was already overjoyed at having witnessed the inner sanctum of my McMystery, I was even more elated by what I pulled out of the brightly colored cardboard cube.

It was The Flash, my favorite super hero of the moment due to his recent TV show! Something was wrong, though. The Flash was looking a little tubby...and hairy. This wasn't the regular Scarlet Speedster I knew and loved, it was TAZ-FLASH!

Some creative genius had managed to merge the Looney Toons with classic, DC Comics heroes! Erik got Bat-Duck, which was Daffy mixed with Batman and by the packaging we could tell that Bugs Bunny had been spliced with Superman to create Superbugs and the previously unknown Petunia Pig had traded clothes with Wonder Woman to create Wonder Pig. They even came with individual comics to explain their new personas. It was awesome!

Although there are dozens more Happy Meal Toys I remember playing with over my lifetime, none shown brighter that those Super Looney Toons. Way to double your exposure Warner Brothers and thanks for the memories.

Honorable mention goes to the following Happy Meals:
-Super Mario Brothers (I loved that jumping Goomba)
-McNugget Buddies (Their outfits were interchangeable!)
-Fraggle Rock (I didn't watch the show, but these toy cars were always around)
-Tiny Toon Cars (They flipped so you got 2 characters with each!)
-Batman Returns (The Batmobile with the launching cockpit rocked!)

So let's hear about your favorites, folks.

I thought the Barbie ones were the coolest... But that's just my opinion. I also had the Kermit one and there was the beanie babies one called the end... I thought he was cute.

    Muppet Babies and Changeables!
    DirtyD1979 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
To me the best Happy meal toys were hotwheels cars and legos. I liked the Changables toys too though since I also liked transformers.

We did not go to McDonald’s all that much, so when we did it was a treat. I do remember a few times when we would get McDonalds regularly; this was based on the Happy Meal toys. One time was when the happy meals came in Pails with a Halloween face on it. There was a green Witch, Ghost, Pumpkin, and I think a purple Frankenstein. I still have several of the witch, ghost and pumpkin Pails from the mid 80's and display them on Halloween. Another time we got a lot of McDonalds is when they had the Flintstone's mugs you could buy. We had an entire cabinet shelf full of them.
-This was a Great article Thanks

I've heard that the happy meal toys from back when we were kids are soooooo much better than the ones they have today! At first I wasn't sure, because they're fast food toys how good can you expect them to be? But after I read this article, I joined in and agreed.
ChipmunkCrazy Posted 3 years 10 months ago

happy meals use to be awesome.. we had such great stuff in 'em! now its all "health and saftly" bullshit and stupid toys!
    raph89 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Happy meal toys rocked back in the day! Reading this article kind of makes me want to go get some of the old ones, particularly the "Mcdino Changeables ones.
    Ninjaturtles1600 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
The toys were definitely the best reason to go to McDonald's when you were a kid. I can't believe someone else remembers the changeable toys. I still have that hamburger changeable thing somewhere in my house. There were also some good Animaniacs toys, I had a bicycle with Wacko. they also had some good disney themed ones, Lion King, Hercules.
    jangofett2826 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Cool article. I am 32 and work in animation and up to this day I still buy Happy Meals. My favorite ones were the Muppet Babies ones. They were so cool. I remember that you can make a playset with the Happy Meal box and they came with accessories that you can pop out and attach to the characters.

Luckily, I work by a McDonald's. They still come out with great toys, but I wish they would put them back in Happy Meal Boxes.

    Cool article!
    albert_81 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Seriously, what has happened to Happy Meal toys. I recently took my 22 month old son to Mckie Ds and the toys were crappy, hollow plastic that broke as soon as he dropped the toy to the floor, which was about 5 seconds after I handed it to him. I miss the toys like the Muppet Babies figures. We had them all between me and my sister and my parents still have several of them after all these years despite being thrown, dropped, chewed and crushed hundreds of times. Those were the days.
    This_guy Posted 3 years 11 months ago
@BarthBurger: Damn, man! You went waaaay back with the "Stompers" (minature Bigfoot-type trucks, right?)!

Throughout the 80's and 90's I lived for Happy Meals. I had at least one toy from almost all the series growing up. Even some that were regional (I lived in Hawaii during the 80's). I think the toys they did for the new He-Man cartoon were way above they usual standards.
BarthBurger Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I remember the happy meals that were the plastic spaceships. I also remember when they had the plastic boats too. Great article the brought back a lot of memories. My favs though were the stompers.
Kazenji Posted 3 years 11 months ago
    I remember those Changables toys

another one i know of is them X-men ones they had and they were in cars.
jamilynn Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I still have some of my happy meal toys the ones that I still have that I know is the Barbie ones with the boys and girls happy meals I will still buy them if I had too.
    Arcee23 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I remember those Looney Tunes superheroes, I loved those. I still have one of those Changeables toys, my 4 year old son likes to play with it.
EMan Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I can only remember the Happy Meal Toys I had when I was a kid. I had the McDonalds foods that transformed into dinosauars, Power Rangers pogs, the Luigi on a cloud from SMB3, and the Back to the Future car.
trykome Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Does anyone remember the Happy Meals that came in the Flying saucer type box and that was your toy? It was before the boxes I think anyone?
edwin Posted 3 years 11 months ago
great article! brought back a lot of memories. some where in my garage ive got all the parts to the inspector gadget happy meal toys. they came out to coincide with that awful matthew brodderick movie. the toy was cool though. all the parts fit together to make one big inspector gadget. only downside is that the toy looks like matthew brodderick instead of the guy from the old cartoon.
    raph89 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
LOVED YOUR ARTICLE! It brought back a lot of memories. I have several favorite happy meal toy sets from growing up in the 90s. One of them would have to be the "Spider-man" happy meal toy set. I also remember the "New Food Changeables" happy meal toys. They were like the "Mcdino Changeables" happy meal toys.
DemonEnvy Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I had gotten some of the Bambi toys and Muppet Babies toys from the Happy Meals. I wonder how I missed out on the Mac Tonight toys though. It was probably because I was already in my teens I guess. Anyhow, enjoyable article.

    Two words. ASTRO SNIKS.
    LBD_Nytetrayn Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Ah, fun, fond memories. I had at least one toy from every set shown here, except the Mac Tonight ones, sadly.

Not all toys they have these days are bad; the TMNT Happy Meal for the movie a couple of years ago was pretty good, as was the more recent TransFormers Animated Happy Meal; not all the toys from that were good, but Optimus, Bumblebee, and Lugnut were pretty good. The LEGO Batman stuff was neat, though not as good as real LEGOs...

The Mario ones remain a favorite, though. And I enjoyed the Garfield set as well.
BenJamin Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Response to alteredbeast... I also forgot about the interchangeable cars from Tiny Toons. I think we had two of those toys and they're buried somewhere in our basement.
    dahm322 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
god that brings back memories.. couldnt you remove the super hero suits off bugs and daffy.
alteredbeast Posted 3 years 11 months ago
i had completely forgotten about the tiny toons interchangeable cars, man those were sweet. you're style of writing is awesome man, thumbs up.
BenJamin Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Oh, how I miss getting a Happy Meal. I remember at times getting those McNugget buddies. We also got a Taz-Flash and Bat-Duck. My sisters got the figures of Thumper, Flower and Friend Owl from Bambi but no Bambi figure. When Super Mario Bros. 3 came out we got a Raccoon Mario with the suction pad attached to a spring where you stick him for a couple of seconds and he pops. We also had a Luigi on a cloud with wheels. Fond memories. WILL SOMEBODY GET THE KID A HAPPY MEAL!?
    notoldperson1209 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
sweet!!i used to love playing the games on the side of the box
Retro Phil Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Ah yes, the Happy Meal, seems like yesterday they had good toys rather then the plastic crap they have today (after that 2001 Bionicle promotion, it just went downhill). Not to say that they all are bad that is, they're not all that interesting anymore.
    Lucas2600b Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I still have Fry Bot and The Cheeseburger Changeables along with some of the old Fraggle Rock cars. I kept them all in a ziplock back when I was a kid and never got rid of them :). I also still have Mario and Luigi from the Mario 3 promo. Ah... Those were the days.
Code E Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Awesome artical! Brings back alot of good memories. Some of these were before my time but I still ended up with them thanks to my older brother.
I remember I had the hamburger and ice cream cone Changeables and the Skatboarding Mac Tonight. The happy meal toy I recall most was the Birth Day train. anyone remember that? Each "car" of the train was something different (Barbie, Hot Wheels, Muppet Babies, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.)
    Good times ^^
Ydoc Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Love this article... I'm going to be doing something along these lines one of these days.
Riphard Posted 3 years 11 months ago
epic! most memorable to me was muppet babies, food transformers and the super hero wb cartoons.
Detox Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I dunno about you but I liked the star wars episode 1 viral marketing toys..the fortune telling 8-ball Yoda, darth mauls ship, which I still have since then.
thetwilightgamer Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I miss the Hot Wheels cars so bad it isnt even funny. I remember the shaped boxes (like everyone was talking about) and the ones with the Hot Wheels cars were where you could create ramps and have the cars go through the box. Kind of crude, but the Hot Wheels cars were truly awesome, although they were total plastic.
    Duck2theFuture Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I registered (after being a long time lurker/reader of the site) to be able to comment on your article. Great stuff here, brought back all sorts of memories for me. I can remember when Happy Meals actually made their debut (though only vaguely). Some of these toys I don't recall (like the Mac Tonight ones) but we did not get a McDonald's in my hometown until I was in my late teens. The one we went to most was near my grandparents' house so we only got Happy Meals if we visited there. I had most of the Muppet Babies toys but they got lost over time. The Bambi toys, though, I found some when I was packing to move a couple of years ago! I didn't remember them being Happy Meal toys until reading this. Those were the days, though, when the toys were so very well made. Now the toys are not made nearly as well. And I agree with second exodus about the quality of those recent Lego Batman toys. Huge disappointment. They recently had "Kidz Bop" meals that came with, I guess, a CD single or some nonsense.
Someone else mentioned the shaped boxes: I remember mostly the Halloween themed ones, pumpkin, witch, ghosts...good stuff :)

    Great article!

ILOOOOOOOVED THE LOONEY TUNES SUPER HEROES!!!!!
second exodous Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I remember when I was really really young McDonalds had Lego and Playmobile. I find it funny when they recently had the Lego Batman toys they weren't actual Lego. Couldn't they splurge a little bit and have some collector 'Only at McDonalds' Lego figures with the purchase of any meal, kid or adult? That would draw millions of Lego geeks and sell millions of Bigmacs alone. The only time I ever go there now is when I'm overseas for more than a few weeks and hamburger places are rare and I still feel like the price for their food is steep.
    Kimber76 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Awesome. My mom still has little Gonzo on his Big Wheel on her computer desk. Why SHE has it and not me, I don't know, but I don't have the heart to take it back. I had all the Fraggles, too. I remember back in the early 80's they would do happy meals in containers shaped like things (a UFO comes right to mind) with stickers inside so you could decorate it. And yeah the Hot Wheels...they've been doing those since the early 80's too. Loved the article! (Singing as she gets up from the keyboard:) "It's Mac Toniiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!"
gainesvillefrank Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Well done, my friend. I enjoyed the freewheelin' style of the piece. One of my fondest pop culture memories stems from seeing the Mac Tonight commercials. Just check my avatar.

Back in the good ol' McDonald's days I definitely remember the Muppet Babies toys, Fast Macs, and the Bambi toys. I think I remember the Changeables too, but that's a little more vague in my memory. Haven't been to McDonald's in about 10 years now just because I'm kind of a health nut now, but back in the day McDonald's was the coolest thing to me. Happy Meals were great too, definitely a McDonald's classic. My one other McDonalds memory is the Monopoly game the first year that they started it. Back then I didn't realize the odds were about one in 6 million that I'd ever win. They made millions of 2 or 3 of the pieces for each property and only about 4 or 5 of the one single piece you DID need. But I didn't know that. I just kept going there getting stuff to slowly pull off that game piece. It was addictive! My last Happy Meal memory is one of the first Lego Happy Meals. There were 4 small sets; a boat, a plane, a car, and a helicopter. When I was growing up I was really, and I mean REALLY into Legos. To have FREE Legos in a Happy Meal was the coolest thing EVER! Below is a link to the old commercial:

Ah, yes! I distinctly remember a lot of those toys you listed!
twinkiethekid Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I also loved the McChangeables that changed into Dinosaurs. The hotcakes-into-pterodactyl sill makes me tingle all over. You know, in a good way.

I also dug the McNuggets that were dressed as different things. I still have the Australian one. They were basically the most insulting stereotypes possible, but who cares?
LuckyHawk Posted 3 years 11 months ago
i hade alot of the featured toys as well. Its funny how important that cheap crap was to us children.
twinkiethekid Posted 3 years 11 months ago
Awesome article. I was such a fanboy for the McChangeables and the Fast Macs. I had all of the Muppet Babies too. I think I remember eating about 100 happy meals one summer to get the entire set of Super Mario III toys - what was my mom thinking?? If we only knew then what we know about transfats...
davidyck Posted 3 years 11 months ago
happy meals were the only reason i ever really liked mcdonalds as a kid. i forget which year, but at one point, mcdonalds made sonic the hedgehog toys. do you know which year?
by the way, i liked the beginning. i laughed my head off.
