90s Pop Punk

A look back on some of my favorite pop punk albums from the 90s

Everybody has a music scene they kind of grow up with. Or... maybe it's not really something you "grow up" with, because it's more of something you just do for fun. For me, it was the pop punk scene of the 90s. This was after the hardcore political punk scene of the 80s, but before the emo pop scene of the 2000s. 90s pop punk was kinda just about fun, friends, and bad attitudes. I'm enthused to share some of the pop punk albums which have kept me entertained the most over the years.

PS - If you don't like punk, don't bash my article. just don't read it.

First I wanna start with "Dookie" by Green Day. Everyone remembers this one, whether they were a fan or despised it. The first single was "Longview" in 1994. It quickly caught the attention of a lot of the rebellious teenagers of the 90s. With it's unique bass line, talk of surburban boredom and shouting "I got no motivation!" It was a hit. 3 more hits followed, Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise, and When I Come Around. The whole album catches a youthful attitude. Just pop it into the CD player and hear the first lyric: "I declare I don't care no more". That line prepares you for the whole album. If you loved that song, then the rest of the CD would hit close to home too. If you thought that line was immature, then just turn the CD off and go back to your 90s pop.

Sure everyone knows who Blink 182 is. They're the band that sang "All The Small Things". But that song doesn't do justice to their early material. 1995's "Cheshire Cat" is hilarious and immature, while actually remaining true to life at the same time. The album featured songs about lost friends, pretty girls, rejection, and... wetting your pants. The song "Carousel" discussed life after high school when all your old friends lose contact with you. "M+Ms" was an awesome love song, and "Does My Breath Smell?" is still one of the ultimate dateless loser songs.

One of the best songs on the disc though, was "Wasting Time" which featured the rad line "Sometimes I sit at home thinking of her and wondering if she's sitting at home thinking about me and wondering if I'm sitting at home thinking about her... or am I just wasting my time?" Anybody who can't relate to that feeling is just lying.

Another great thing about this album was Mark Hoppus and Tom Delonge's shared vocal duties. They both sang songs, giving it a unique feel. But it's when these two guys are goofing off that you can't resist. Between songs there was lots of funny banter. One of my favorites being Mark qouting a line from the 80s movie "Airplane" followed by Tom saying "Are you uh... feeling alright?" It was incredibly stupid, but the fact that this CD was ever released is just plain great.

Another classic song was "Touchdown Boy" which was about the school jock. In the middle of the song, Mark and Tom imitate game commentators. Mark says "He won't be alone. Not this weekend I don't think" and then Tom says "Yeah, cuz like a dog, he's loyal to his bone. For the sake of the kids reading this, I won't go into detail on the double meaning of that...

Ahhh, "Punk in Drublic" by NoFX. This is a CD on many punk rocker's wish lists. There's a lot of variety to be found here. The first song "Linoleum" is a total anthem for anyone who sometimes doesn't know where they belong. "Dig" is quit an interesting historical look on how America basically wiped out the Indians from the land and then had the nerve to build museums for them.

The album has serious moments like that, but it also features some crazy humor. Two of the members of NoFX are Jewish, so they wrote a song about it. When the album ends, one of the band members says funny things in the voices of many classic cartoon characters. ("I don't think the ranger's gonna like this Yogi. This guy's more punk than me")

This is actually my favorite album of all time. "Life In General" by MxPx. The boys from Bremerton sing about a lot of things people may go through on a daily basis, hence the title.

The first song "Middlename" can apply to anyone who wishes they never met a certain person. "Move To Bremerton" is about meeting a cool girl... who doesn't live in your hometown. Other topics include growing up, going through change, school, and just trying to understand the world. While the CD isn't super funny like the other albums I've mentioned, it sure is true to life. I listen to this album about once a week at the least, and that's most likely because I find myself relating to a lot of the songs.

These are just 4 of my favorite 90s pop punk albums. So what were some of your favorite CDs of any genre in the 90s? Also, if you enjoyed this article, I just might make a part two.

Again, the artciel is about POP punk. I love Rancid, but they would not belong in this article.
badfish Posted 3 years 6 months ago
you forgot a very important 90s punk band; rancid.
    discoking187 Posted 3 years 7 months ago
Great aricle, I own all four of those CD's and they are each full of great memories for me. Depending on my mood either Goldfinger's self titled album or Blink 182's Cheshire Cat is my all time favorite "pop punk" cd.
Oolen Posted 3 years 7 months ago
not a huge fan of the genre, but I do like blink-182. I started playing bass because of mark, and carousel is so fun to play
Shepard of Suburbia Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Awesome Article! U nd me seem to like alot of the same bands!
I prefer the new material of Blink 182 though, but "All The Small Things", is among my least favorite of their hits.

is 90s Generation, serious about Chili Peppers being Punk? if so, he needs a serious history lesson.
pizzaguy Posted 4 years 1 month ago
    Umm... yeah. A punk band...
    90sNewGeneration Posted 4 years 1 month ago
I finally listened to Green Day in the early 2000s. The one punk rock band that sticks out in my mind vividly is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don't know who has the better humor, Blink 182 or Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anyway, I was just thinking that they deserved some credit as being one of the driving forces for punk music and it's great to give them some credit considering they disbanded and Chad left to play drums for Chickenfoot...let's hear it for RHCP!!!!!!

Green Day used to be my favorite band, i still have all thier work. up to the shitty American idiot
    april_o_niel Posted 4 years 1 month ago
I remember my brother walking around singing longview all day not knowing what the line "masturbation's lost it's fun meant". Then our dad told us to quit singing that.
pizzaguy Posted 4 years 1 month ago
What are you talking about powerface? No one ever called Nirvana or Foo Fighters punk.
powerface Posted 4 years 1 month ago
No, cause I still think its better to like Nirvana and Foo Fighters not NOFX and Pennywise, it is still Punk in 2 different types of stuffs.
darthmunk Posted 4 years 1 month ago
Awsome! But what about Screeching Weasel, The Queers, or the The Riverdales?
Pat Henzy Posted 4 years 1 month ago
Thumbs up from me.... though I don't agree entirely with everything you said... In my opinion bands like Antidote, Misfits,Dead Kenedys, 7 seconds, Minor threat, Black Flag and the likes are real punk which leaves bands such as Rancid (I think you said somthing about that in a response to someone else though) able to fall into the Pop Punk category (there are also so many sub-genres such as saying 7 seconds isn't punk cause they are harcore or what-not). With that being said though it's all just music, and I like all of it.I thought this was a good article! Let's see part 2!

For a great selection of mid 90's pop rock, check out the soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber!
tattooedhusker Posted 4 years 2 months ago
btw, nice article, got my thumbs up. This isn't "my genre," obviously, but good nonetheless.
Detox Posted 4 years 2 months ago
whenever I remember blink 182, I think about that fucked up song they made..."i wanna fuck a dog in the ass" rofl
volkstraum Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Only one toolbox so far that didn't get the memo, I see.
megajimmy Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Except for the Ramones, I don't think there was any real punk discussed on this page
tattooedhusker Posted 4 years 2 months ago
With all due respect spottedfeather, like cosgrove said early offspring was close to true punk. Only their first two outings (Self titled and Ignition) were really good albums (IMHO of course)
    Troma4life Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    short but great article.
ProphetSword Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Some of my friends liked the hardcore political punk of the 80s. So, when Green Day hit, they were like: "These guys are lame."

I always thought they were what punk would be if it wasn't political and actually sounded more musical. So, I liked them, even though some of my friends never could come to grips with it.

So, thumbs up from me just for the mention of Green Day, who are both overrated and underrated at the same time.
Cosgrove Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Indeed. Great article. For next installments, I'd like to hear your takes on and see some Suicude Machines "Destruction by Definition". Best punk/ska album ever to come out. Less Than Jake "Losing Streak", Lagwagon "Let's Talk About Feelings", Homegrown "Act Your Age", The Ataris "Blue Skies, Broken Hearts... Next 12 Exits", Millencolin "For Monkeys", Catch 22 "Keasbey Nights", Goldfinger "Hangups", and countless more MxPx albums.

It's a touchy subject, but I would consider including all branches of punk (pop-punk, ska-punk, etc.). You're not gonna please everyone. In my opinion, early Offspring is as close to true punk (Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc.) as any band in the 90s. Obviously some people don't agree with me, so tread softly on this area, pizzaguy.
    grandmasboy3692 Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    great article dude!

youve got to make a part two

and tell us all about the 90's punk!

    awesome!
scwahls Posted 4 years 2 months ago
and for the 'rancid?' comment, i worship tim armstrong, operation ivy, and the mighty rancid, but rancid is NOT pop punk (despite a little mtv play). they're just a kick ass punk band, plain and simple.
scwahls Posted 4 years 2 months ago
i dug the green day lookout albums, and of course....nofx rules. i probably listened to punk in drublic 2,000 times.
QueenBee Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    I love Green Day
pizzaguy Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Thanks for the comments guys! After submitting this article I was kind of skeptical as to whether or not it I should have. I know there are many more great 90s pop punk albums... if I ever do a part two I'll write about those. They include things along the lines of No Use For A Name, Millencolin, Noggin Toboggan, and Less Than Jake. And as for the fact that I didn't include any Bad Religion, Rancid, or Pennywise, that's just because I see those as more of straight up punk than pop punk. I love both types, but this artivle was on pop punk.
    fragglerocker1020 Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    Green Day rules..
gothamjedi Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Brings back memories of the first time I listened to DOOKIE with my best friend, we were about 11 and thought we were "the $h!t" lol... good times. :)
ImAllTheRage Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Neat article. I remember worshipping most of these albums when I was in high school. I just hope you're prepared for the "what's punk and what's not" arguments.

Oh, and if you do a sequel, you should include something from No Use For A Name. I think they're way underappreciated.
Riphard Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Pop punk is Fenix TX, Good Charlotte, NFG, Sum 41, etc.

Bands on the bubble of that genre are the Ataris, Blink 182, MxPx, etc.

By your logic....if NoFX is pop punk then so is Rancid, Pennywise and Bad Religion.

Shame on you! Fat Mike now has a complex.
Peter North Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    Rancid anyone?
    fit_n_fun Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Where's Green Day's "Insomniac" album? :P Also, Strung Out's "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues" was an excellent punk record as well.
Hoju Koolander Posted 4 years 2 months ago
You sparked a retro memory of a bygone trend when I realized I bought "Dookie" through one of those Columbia Record Club ads that said "Get 9 cds for free and the 10th for a penny" but then you were supposed to buy more throughout the year. Well I never did and a year later the phone calls started...luckily itunes has pretty much put an end to that scam.
Spottedfeather Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Other than Blink 182 not being punk, nice article. And Tattoo, there was nothing from Offspring because Offspring isn't and has never been punk.
tattooedhusker Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    Nothing from The Offspring?
    Score:
    19
    More from pizzaguy
