I love this stuff! I have been reading through this piece of pop culture history for about an hour now. I actually remember some of the air times and days of certain shows from my childhood, like He-Man weekdays at 3, Family Ties and Night Court on Thursday nights, and Dungeon and Dragons on Saturday Mornings. Keep these articles coming!
gaijinninja i would like to thank you for that. this was really a treat. i never had that many "oh my god i remember that!" moments in one sitting. those were the exact same channels i used to watch all my shows on. thanks again.
i really dig these and the hbo guides. another reason retrojunk is the shit.
i love going through old magazines, they are just like time capsules. the ads are always the best.
I have always loved TV Guide's Fall Previews. My mom has this copy somewhere (She has every Fall Preview guide since 1975). Great post--I like the advertisments.
The 1984 &1985 Fall issues sure did have some great shows premiering those seasons. It is funny to think also how some of these duds had some good star quality behind them, but because of either bad premise, bad writing, or both, those shows never inspired the viewership it needed to survive. "Dreams", a show I never saw when it aired, had John Stamos and Jamie Gertz. John Stamos would be noticed years later for Full House and now ER, though I know he was popular for Daytime TV before. Jamie Gertz of Sqaur Pegs, being noticed later in "Still Standing". Conchata Ferrell from this "E/R" (Not the Clooney ER) now being noticed nearly 20 plus years later on "Two and a Half Men". You see actor/actresses that had some hard times in shows past, that finally got noticed once they were signed on to a show with enough oomph to see it to popularity.
I actually have this issue (I used to keep all the Fall Previews of TV Guide). I love that this was the year "V: The Series" premiered (one of my favorite all-time shows).
Also, on that Friday night, a movie called "High School USA" was showing (starring a lot of TV stars of that era, including Michael J. Fox). I bought that movie in a $1.00 rack at Wal-Mart, and I consider it a good investment. But, I remember watching it the night it first premiered.
These have been fun to scroll through...not only flooding back TV memories for me, but also a fascinating slice of social history with the ads and the drawn artwork ads more prevalent than photos. Glad you shared these!
