Childhood Fears

Things I was scared of as a child

Fear is a bit of a taboo subject. We don't really like to talk about it and expose our weaknesses, yet we all have them. We were all scared of things as a child, maybe it was clowns, or ghosts, and I'm pretty sure there's not a person reading this that wasn't afraid of the dark.

But I'm going to talk about the things that scared me as a child that may be unique. I am also curious if other people had similar fears, or what their fears were.
First I'll talk about movies that scared me. As I look back at it, it's funny to me that something so cheesy scared the crap out of me for years. The movie I'm talking about is "Gremlins."

Those green little bastards haunted me for years. This movie planted in my brain that weird scary little green guys lurked around every corner to do nasty things to me. This movie also doubled up with another fear of mine, the basement. I grew up in Wisconsin and I was the youngest. That meant I was the beer getter. The beer fridge was in the basement with one set of 5 steps and another of 7 to get to the bottom. You can bet it was a mere two jumps to come up from that dark gremlin infested nightmare.

Eventually, I found the humor of the movie. Watching it enough times tamed my fear and helped me see past my fear. I even had a read-along book of the gremlins that played a mini record. The kind that you needed that little round piece to play them. I also had a sweet go-bots record player with a picture of Scooter on it. Why exactly I was so afraid of this movie I'll never know, but I distinctly remember being frozen in my tracks the first time I saw it.
Not to be outdone, Hollywood saw to it that I should be scared of water as well. My first watching of "Jaws" had me scared to take a bath. I'm not joking. After seeing that movie, and I was old enough to know better, but my mind pictured me getting eaten by a shark in the bathtub if I closed my eyes for a second.

I think this one is a more valid fear. Plenty of grown-ups are scared of water or swimming or getting eaten by a shark. This was explained to me as a child to help overcome my new fear. I am happy to tell you that I am fear-free of water and will only pee in the water if it's a lake or river and I've been drinking, not because I'm scared.
What you remember as a child fascinates me. Some of the most mundane things are forever kept in some part of my brain. Is it important? Does it reveal something about my life? No. I remember it for some reason I will never know. As a kid, I had night-terrors. For those that don't know, it's a step beyond nightmares. Nightmares wake you up, maybe a little rattled, but you are able to go back to sleep. More times than my parents would like to count I woke up screaming and frightened beyond belief. For some reason, the dream I still remember, don't laugh at me now, was about Gonzo.

That's right, from the Muppets. Weird thing is, I was never afraid of the Muppets, ever. But I had a night-terror of Gonzo standing on top of a boulder chasing me down. I would turn and get near my house, but he would come out of nowhere and make me have to change directions, never getting into the safety of my home. I have no idea why I remember this dream, but I do. I remember being terrified and I can clearly recall parts of that dream better than the ones I had last night.

The final thing I already mentioned, the dark. But it's not what you think. It was something I called phantoms. This still sticks out clearly in my mind and brings shivers down my spine. I have an older sister and we shared a room until I was about 8. Then, when she got her own room, and I was left to battle the darkness alone. Only a mere 15 ft away from my parent's room, in the dark that was miles to travel from the safety of my bed.

I would wake up at night quite a bit. In the doorway I could see two figures. They were blacker then the rest of the black of the darkness. These two figures seemed to be talking, since their heads moved and I could see hands moving as well. I always thought it was my parents whispering things about me thinking I was asleep. So very softly I would say, "Mom?" But would not get an answer back. So steadily, my voice would get louder and shakier because these two black shapes were talking about me but not responding.

Eventually my voice would get loud enough to wake my actual parents up and depending on the time of night one of two things would happen. Someone would come to comfort me, or I was told to go back to sleep. I'm still not a great sleeper today, no longer of fear, just can't shut my brain off sometimes. I am sympathetic to my poor parents that lost countless nights of sleep do to my wild imagination. But to this day, the memory of those phantoms scares the child in me.
I am really hoping to get some feedback on this one, I have not been reading from retrojunk for very long, so if an article like this has already been published, I did not mean to copy the idea. These are my personal fears as a kid and I'm curious if anyone shared something like these or would like to share their own. Thanks for reading.

I do not like clowns... not afraid of them just hate clowns. I find them creepy. It does not stem back to the movie "IT" because I was much older when that movie came out. I think it goes back to "Poltergeist" and the creepy toy clown that tries to pull the kid under his bed. Then you have the whole John Wayne Gacy thing. That just backs up my theory that "The only good clown is a dead clown!" Ronald Mc Donald there is another creepy SOB... he hangs out with a hamburgler and a purple glob of goo.

I believe that our childhood fears play a big part in forming who we are as adults. I too suffered from night terrors, and besides that had a VERY overactive imagination, leading to all kinds of terrifying experiences. I still haven't conquered my fear of red night lights...

Fears can be based on the age at which we are exposed to unusual things and the explanation we get. Many ppl in ur age group are afraid of clowns because of watching that movie, "It". Between the ages of 2-5 (sometimes older), we experience "magical thinking" where we confuse fantasy (movies, stories, effects of our wishes) with reality. That is why adults who are aware of this stage try to minimize the effects of negative events or explain them in a manner to help young children process the event in a more logical manner. That being said, I also believe in spirits, ghosts, ancestors or however you want to label those who have lived before us and still exist (unseen by most) with us. I, myself, was pushed down by a large dog owned by my father at age 2 and was terrified of all dogs (even ankle biters). I would stand and shake whenever they came near and started barking. Nice article and thanks for sharing from ur heart.

As a child my father was in the Army, we moved every two years. My biggest fear was that they would move and leave me behind. I also had night terrors as a child, even today I have some dreams that wake me up shaking or crying.

I was terrified of the Snow White ride at Disney...the witch kept peering out of the castle window while you were waiting on line. I would not go on.

Interesting article. To be honest, Jaws never really scared me, not even when I was a kid. I got scared of some of the weirdest things as a kid. For example, I used to be scared to death of that guy who would go "WHOOPSY" in Mortal Kombat, yet see people getting their heads ripped off and burned alive was no problem. Strange how a child's mind works, huh?

my god I had "night phantoms" too when I was five. It looked as though they were crawling all over the walls and cielings, like spiders, (which I'm also was afraid of). But what was worse was I had the shit scared out of me by "Maleficent" from Sleeping Beauty. She give me four nightmares a night until I turned nine!

I used to be deathly afraid of Chucky from the Child's Play movies. At the very sight of that doll i would scream at the top of my lungs and run as fast as i could to my mom. Everyone hated it when i did that, i dont know what made me so afraid of him, it was bad though lol. After seeing the third Child's Play where Chucky cuts Andy's leg with the pocket knife while he was hiding under the bed, that was prolaby the worst i would check under my bed everytime i walked in the room before i would put on socks or shoes. I used to also be afraid of the Exorcist demon thingy too. it wasnt as bad as chucky though. Its kinda funny to think back on the things that used to scare you as a kid. But alteredbeast youre not alone.

Where's the witch from Snow White?
    futuramafan95 Posted 4 years 5 months ago
I used to have dreams about bugs bunny brutally murduring me
    This_guy Posted 4 years 5 months ago
I went through the EXACT same problem with the "night phantoms," instead they would keep peeking into my room to see if I've fallen asleep. So of course I would try to stay awake as long as possible to keep them out. I used to watch "Gremlins" all the time when I was younger. The only thing that scared me would be the original VHS box art (Stripe sitting in a chair, smoking a cigar) and the last comment from the narrator at the end of the movie: "You just might have a Gremlin in your house." *Shudder*

Wow, the thing that totally freaked me when I was a little girl were clowns, and the movie that started it all was Poltergeist. The clown under the bed thing hiked up the usual monster under the bed thing over the top for me x1000. I remember my Grandad gave me a Bozo the clown doll for my birthday, I kissed it in front of everyone to be nice but it repulsed me so much I threw it across the room. If anything, now I had my very own clown staring at me at night (even if it was well hidden I knew it was staring at me). I didn't even dare get up to call my parents çause the thing would grab my feet as soon as a toe would hit the floor(or so i deeply felt). Now I have my own daughter and I vow never to make her keep any toy if it scares her just so it wouldnt be rude. Even if its from a loving doting grandad. to this day clowns still give me the willies

Cosgrove- i'm not really sure what they actually were, if anything. as for the picture i'm not sure, i just googled "scary ghosts" images on google.

RexDart- thankyou for the wonderful acticle, that's exactly how i started, was by reading someones article that inspired me to comment, and then write myself. i hope to read one of yours in the future.

Everyone else- thanks for the great discussion! i totally remember being scared of the eagle from the muppets too. i think it was something about his mouth, always frowning.

I've had similar experiences as well. When I was younger (growing up in the late 80s and and early 90s), I'd have hallucinations about monsters and the supernatural. These scary events always occurred at night: Sometimes, I felt as though someone (or something) was coming to get me. Other times, I thought I could hear voices whispering in my ear. I also used to have nightmares about a living, disembodied head that would hover through the air. It would always fly up close to my face and start laughing maniacally. As a result, I would usually wake up and run into my parents' bedroom. But whenever I approached my bedroom door, hands would come out of the wall and grip my leg tightly. To my surprise, it was a dream in another dream. When I finally woke up (for real this time) I would approach my bedroom door with caution, keeping away from the wall (As a child, I also had difficulty differing between fantasy and reality). Afterward, I would go and sleep with my parents, which made me feel secure. Then I'd dream about happy, positive things. However, the nightmares continued for many years. Today, I seldom ever have them. Today, I've grown fond of the horror genre. I've seen a lot of scary movies, which has enabled me to develop an immunity to the fear of the dark. However, there are times, where I'll have a negative and/or upsetting dream about my past (such as an ex-girlfriend). Anyway, excellent article! It was nicely written and brought back a lot of nostalgia.

likecats Posted 4 years 5 months ago
I used to be scared of the old Edge of Night theme music. I would have these weird dreams that the title would pop out of the tv and chase me into the bathroom, and I would try to baracade the door. I ran in slow motion.
    dahm322 Posted 4 years 5 months ago
The ultimate thing that used to scare me now and even still creeps me out a little is the Crypt Keeper. everything about it drove me nuts the laugh he made, his voice and ecspecially when he would pop out out of his coffin at the start of the show. i did start to watch it a little awhile ago since I have directtv and we get the channel chiller. And i must say the stories he tells are quite intresting.

I was afraid of the sound a toilet makes when it is flushed. Every time I went to the bathroom I would flush the toilet and bolt out of the bathroom.

Holy crap. I'm scared of people, that are in big huge costumes of an animal your not sure what it is. One time I went to a parade and a big animal costume thing (i think it was an armidillio) and he kept on rasing his arms for a hug, and then my friend pushed me into the armidillio!! I was so scared!! I had nightmares after that!!

Hi, I'm a long time reader of RJ and a new member. I actually signed up because of your article, I could not resist responding to it. I've never heard of it happening to anyone else, but the experience you describe of seeing "phantoms" as you call them is the exact same thing that used to scare the crap out of me as a very little kid. It only happened when I slept in a crib, so it happened when I was very young, as far as I can recall it never happened after I started sleeping in a real bed. Anyway, it happened exactly as you've described it in your article, and I've actually used the description that they were blacker than the darkness itself to describe them to other people as I got older. I would see them right above me in my crib, their hands would be holding on to the railings and it seemed they were staring right at me. At first, again, same as you, I thought they were my parents, and they seemed to be talking to each other though I couldn't hear it, I only got the impression somehow, maybe through hand gestures. Basically the same exact experience as you, though they were VERY close to me, as I said, standing right over me in my crib. I can't remember how these experiences ended or how many times they occurred. I'm guessing I called for my parents, but my only distinct memory of trying to get away from them is just hiding under the covers.
Memories like this make me curious and anti-nostalgic. I'm very happy to be an adult (heh, well, physically anyway, I'm still a pretty immature guy sometimes) and not have to deal with the heart-pounding terror of whatever-the-heck those phantoms are looking over me and seemingly discussing me. I wonder what the explanation for this phenomenon could possibly be? Childhood hallucinations? Aliens? Demons? Anti-matter versions of your parents? Deceased relatives or ancestors? Who knows?
Anyway, great article (grammar could be improved a bit though) and thanks for writing something that inspired me to finally become an official member of Retrojunk!

to tell the truth, i was never afraid of the dark. i actually as a kid enjoyed it, as i could sneak up on others and scare the crap out of them. i was always afraid of clowns though. i guess its just becouse they are overly eccentric. anything that was happier than usual scared me.

    Kimber76 Posted 4 years 5 months ago
This was a good article! I think the theme may have been covered by others, but you've made it your own by focusing on your unique "kid fears." As for me, to this day I cannot stand to be in darkness...I always had a nightlight or hall light on growing up. Gremlins scared the bejezus out of me too, the first time I watched it. I also had a very overactive (fearful) imagination and could hear whispers/see shadows in the silence of my room. I took to having the radio on as I fell asleep to alleviate that.
Cosgrove Posted 4 years 5 months ago
Oh btw, is the second picture a creature from the movie Timeline?

Fun article, personal perspectives are the best. I'm with you on those "Phantoms". My imagination was/is so wild I see figures in the dark, in carpet, on stucco walls, etc. I never heard/hear them talk, though. I just try to think of something random like Squirrels eating potato chips on the beach and I fall right to sleep....zzzzz.
Cosgrove Posted 4 years 5 months ago
Were the two figures shadows or something? That would disturb me, too. I would get scared of little things like that. I can recall trying to fall asleep, but hearing something on my pillow moving. I would close my eyes so tight and imagine happier things. It would disturb me to no end until I mustered the strength to look at my pillow thoroughly, but to no avail. I realize today that it was the sound of my hair rubbing on the pillow. Try it! Rub your hand ontop of your head very slowly. It sounds like a creature rustling in some brush/shrub.

I would also fall asleep facing different ways depending on what scared me at the time. I used to watch Unsolved Mysteries and other stuff like that about aliens coming in at night and just watching humans sleep. To quench that fear, I would face towards the wall to deter any confrontation with the beings from another planet. Nightmares about little trolls living under my bed soon frightened me, so I would face away from my wall and the crack between it and the bed (where they would come out). When I got older and realized the true monsters of the world (murderers and robbers), I turned back toward the wall and away from the window. I would keep a loaded rubber band gun next to my bed, just in case.
    Score:
    29
