Do cartoon movies mean the end?

Intro

We have all seen it countless times. You watch a show, whether it be a cartoon or sitcom and it goes from humble beginings to monster success. And almost always culminating into a feature length movie. Well have you ever noticed that after the Big Screen Debut the show's popularity usually dimishes? Well I want to examine a few of the Cases in which some of my favorite shows were lost to The Silver Screen....

First lets take a look at Rugrats. Rugrats was firsted aired on Aug 11, 1991. The brain child of Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo. The show follows the exploits and misadventures of a group of toddlers. The main focus of the show was on the courageous boy wonder Tommy Pickles and along with him was his cousin Angelica, best friend Chucky Finster and identical twins Phil and Lil.

Now I'm sure many of you have fond memories of Nickolodean's longest running show of over 14 years. I ask you this, how can a show that lasted that long not even make it an occasional airing? Examine exhibit A

The Rugrats movie was released on Nov. 20, 1998. Thats about 7 years since its original debut. However listen to this; Rugrats was in production from1991 till 1994 then had a temporary hiatus until 1996. I suppose they were just running on the momentum the show had accumulated, seeing how things would turn out. Then with the show winning countless awards and even having a star on hollywoods walk of fame they started to add new concepts with the show to keep viewers interested. I don't know about you but Dill was a blunder to the show. He could not talk with his fellow tots which is odd and Chuckie sister is just a ludicrous addition. To make a long story short Rugrats had their Movie debut in 1998 then in 2001 switched to Rugrats all grown up. Then only 3 short years later was discontinued. Why? If its not broke don't fix it. They had a formula that worked and if they kept with it perhaps we would still be watching it today. My next case involves 6 th grader Douglas Yancey Funnie

Who could forget Nickolodean's first Nickatoon Doug. The show also debuted in 1991 and was created by Jim Jinkins who also had a hand in PB&J otter. Though not as popular as Rugrats or as long lived Doug run for a healthy 4 years...that is until Disney bought Jumbo pictures and started the show again but it was no comparison Nicks version. The differences were horrible the show no longer had the same appeal, from the different voices to the art just look at the Doug art from Disney;

Now look at the old Doug. The colors are less intense and I like it that way Also, Doug on Nick wears shorts on Disney he wears pants;

But back to my main point. After aquring Doug in 1996, 2 years after Nick, Disney released the motion picture Doug 1st Movie which was about Doug finding a monster and trying to keep it safe from some villians. I don't know about you but this movie dosen't even ring a bell. Patties new haircut is plain whack and why did Connie's slimming down. Point in case less than one year after the movie Doug was no longer airing. Goodbye Porkchop

There you have it. 2 examples of once great shows now only a vague memory. It would be nice for once to see a show end right. No movies no changes in animation, just let the show end honorably and move on to the next project. I hope you enjoyed my expose and still take a little time to remeber some of the cartoons of yore

    What's with all these youtube vids? Did you do this while you were sleeping, vkimo? You know sleep-posting is a terrible thing. I heard if you wake up a sleep-poster, he'll run frantically run outside and poop in his neighbor's yard. True story.

    The big problem when a show finally gets a movie is it isn't so much that the popularity diminishes it's that the quality of the show that takes a nosedive. It's like the writers just figure "Oh well the show's a success let's just phone it in".

    Well I noticed also when they put a movie out for a show or cartoon it is the invitation to the funeral. Especially with Nickelodeon Shows I mean theres Rugrats and Doug like you said and then there is Drake&Josh, The Wildthornberry's. No if you look at Spongebob or The Fairly Odd Parents they have had about 2 movies each and they are still on but constant reruns so what is up with that?

    i was like wtf is this!??!?!?! rugrats all grown up is just bull sh*t. like its sad to see now that all the shows that we all grew up with arent even played anymore, or even talked about alot. i remember when i religiously watched: rugrats (original), lizzy mguire, even stevens, so basically when nick and disney DIDNT SUCK. i think that disney and nick should make a new channel thats all the old shows. but yeah the movies killed it all!

    may they rest in peace

    Here are some more examples of films that destroyed shows: Wild Thornberries Movie, Hey Arnold the Movie, Teacher's Pet (it only made $6 million under a $10 million budget), and DuckTales the Movie. The shows usually discontinued after this because these films did not do well in the box office (although Teacher's Pet ended in 2002).

    Disney's version of "Doug" was okay, but it just wasn't as good as the original Nickelodeon series. In fact, I'II take Billy West's version of "Doug" over Thomas McHugh's annoying voice any day! As for "Rugrats", I didn't care about "Dil" nor "Kimi", but after another character was introduced (Taffy) and Chuckie's voice was replaced by Nancy Cartwright, I stopped watching it. Even their last movie, "Rugrats Go Wild" was bad!

    I liked Disney's version of "Doug" too. Am I the only one?

    yeah, Disney's Doug was pretty much the cartoon's downfall, though Doug wasn't that appealing to me..bit boring, really.

    The people who watched Rugrats after the movie were a new brand of fan though. Almost ALL previous fans just stopped after Dil. They never did anything once Dil came along. Sometimes they'd almost do something, but guess who they have to stop for. Yeah. The new fans had no idea of the old episodes, and thus on what they were missing out.

    Anyways, it didn't go THAT strong. The show ended a few years after Rugrats in Paris, and was replaced by the spinoff. Which ended VERY fast, thank God.

    Good concept but needs to be expanded a bit, thumbs up but I hope you'll do a follow-up article

    Sorry man, but I can remember quite a few cartoon series who's popularity didn't go down because of the movie.

    Speaking of which, how can you possibly have put Rugrats on this list? The series went on strong for years after that first film.

    Me and my friend used to run home from school everyday in anticipation of watching DOUG. Amazing show! They would never name a character Mr. Dink in this day and age.

    My first thought on a movie killing a franchise was Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The movie itself was awesome, but soon after, the series changed its name to power Rangers in Space or something of that sort. That happened not long after the movie, and after that I lost interest, whereas before that I'd not missed a single episode.

    Yea I thought t needed to be a bit longer maybe a few more shows/movies. also you should have had the hey arnold movie in there.

    Thanks for clearing that up, vkimo. I knew you were better than this article. It's a great idea, it just needs to be expanded upon. I guess we can all be thankful that "Camp Candy: Starring John Candy" kept its integrity and never jumped the shark to the big screen.
    masonx31 Posted 4 years 7 months ago
    wow doesn't that just suck..here I am and poof Your gone .. and then they don't release them on DVD..in series>. sucks.. waiting for doug.. then I would get it!
    Yes thankyou for the insite on Doug, I was wondering why they changed it..ah Disney did it.. Not Jumbo pictures..I'm seeing clearer now!

    I like how you said intro at the begining so I knew it was the Intro and not the ending of the article.
    dalmatianlover Posted 4 years 7 months ago
    I wish you talked about more toon-based movies.
    This_guy Posted 4 years 7 months ago
    Yeah, the Rugrats jumped a friggin' whale shark when they added Dill to the group and landed in a pool full of makos when they brought in Kimmy.

    To this day, I still can't figure out if Disney's Doug's sleeves were too short or too long for his shirt.

    My two favorite cartoons from the 90's. I remember Rugrats came on at 7:30, but the pissed me off because 7:30 was my bedtime.
