We knew it as Nickelodeon

A look back at Nickelodeon

Every kid remembers their favorite TV shows; after all, channel surfing was one of the many pleasures of life as a kid. However, when I was a child there was no need to channel surf, for every show that I longed for was on one beautiful channel...that channel was NICKELODEON!

Nickelodeon featured some of the best kid programming, including: cartoons, game shows, and kid focused sitcoms. Even though I wasn't a full time subscriber, I can even remember getting an issue of Nickelodeon magazine at Pizza Hut, and I loved it.
Thinking back to the real early years, I can remember watching shows such as David the Genome, Eureeka's Castle, and You Can't do that on Television.

As the years progressed, my love for Nickelodeon bloomed that much more. Not only were the shows great, the little surprises Nickelodeon threw in there always put a smile on my face. You remember Inside Out Boy don't you?

Nickelodeon saw it fit to claim rights to all of their cartoons by labeling them as "NickToons". These cartoons were unique and always seemed, I don't know, fresh! Doug, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, etc... they were all so legendary in their own ways.

I can remember sitting around on hot summer days, and on Thanksgiving watching a talking popsicle stick spin around, to chose which NickToons we were fixing to watch. Whether you loved him or hated him, Stick Stickly had YOUR Nicktoon fate at hand, and I think he deserves recognition for all of the astronaut type training spins he did for us back in the day. Heres to you Stick...

Reality TV can be seen on pretty much every station around today. However, if you were a Nickelodeon kid, this concept is all but foreign to you. Although our game shows were more about family fun and less about cheap drama, the excitement was all there, and the slime was always fresh! Shows like Double Dare, Wild and Crazy Kids, Legends of the Hidden Temple, and What Would you Do, provided on couch edge excitement to those who only wished they could be a part.

The sitcoms and shows of Nickelodeon are truly article worthy alone. Whether you wanted comedy, drama, or horror, Nickelodeon covered it all. Countless numbers of Saturday nights were spent watching Snick, which is where many of the shows got their spotlight. Although Snick featured the goods, many shows were played on Nickelodeon at random times. I always waited for the guy with the deep voice to tell us what was coming on next, as the credits rolled for the previous show.

Nickelodeon was more than just a channel, it was a childhood must! I can't imagine my childhood without this awesome channel. Although it seems that Nickelodeon has went downhill since years past, one can only remember the monopoly it once had! It's hard to even try to do an article on Nickelodeon, for there is way too much to even cover. I know that I just discussed the tip of the iceberg, but this trip down memory lane was well worth it to me.

Thanks to everyone I borrowed pictures from, you helped make this article possible!

    raph89 Posted 4 years 6 days ago
I saw Clarissa Explains It All available on dvd at a Barnes & Noble store. But they've only got the first season. Why is it you have to wait forever for the good tv shows from back in the day to come out on dvd? Also you have to wait forever again for them to continue to releasing the series. What a drag!
    Mistress9 Posted 4 years 10 days ago
Eureka's Castle....my god, what a nostalgia bomb! PICNIC TIME!! XD I miss the days when Nickelodeon was bursting with pure WIN. Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, Inspector Gadget, Are You Afraid of The Dark?...So many memories! It's a shame Nick had to go downhill. Spongebob is the only half-decent thing they have left now, and they play it entirely too much >_

Bro i gotta go ahead and comend you on this article, I too feel the pain that the modern Nick has brought on all of us Children of the 90's Nick. I miss it dearly, but it is what made us all who we are today, and without it who knows where we all would be in the world today. thanks for the trip down memory lane man , peace

And this article gets a thumbs up for not including shitty shows like Rocket Power and As Told By Ginger. So many little kids call those shows classics and they are not.
grindcore fan Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Nick in the late 80s and early 90s was the fucking best. Nick went to shit after Rocko and Pete and Pete were cancelled.

    Tv_Themes Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Nickelodeon has been sucking the past 5 years but recently, they've put Family Matters on N@N, boosting their popularity (in my book) greatly. I love that show (AND NO CREDIT CRUNCHES :D:D)
TheOmniscient Posted 4 years 10 months ago
You can never have too many Nickelodeon articles. I actually remember Stick Stickly. Also, I hate that they moved Nick Studios out of Universal Orlando. I used to go to Universal Studios all the time when I was little just to go to Nickelodeon and see the slime machine. There's no reason for me to go there anymore.
    retroqueen73 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
The Nickelodeon I remember used the "Silver Pinball" as it's logo. I remember You Can't Do That On Television, Pinwheel, Mr. Wizards World, Nick Rocks, ect. My memory of Nickelodeon is of the early to mid 80's. The channel and programing were much better. Now I flip the channels and come across "Nick", a non-recognized version of a once great channel. I agree that they need to creat a "Retro Nickelodeon" channel. The kids today might actually learn something and like the history lesson that we grew up on!
gustogummi Posted 4 years 10 months ago
    Oh boy, another Nickelodeon article.
ChicagoSheriff Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Yes another Nick article i was wondering where the next one was gonna come from.
ZombieRellik Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Nickelondeon needs to change back to it's original form.
shiroihikari Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Hmm, not a bad article, necessarily, but for some reason I feel like I've read it before. Multiple times. I wonder why that is...? No seriously, maybe we should find something else to talk about besides Nickelodeon for a change.
Korahn Posted 4 years 10 months ago
As a Canadian, I never had the option of Nickelodeon, but many of their shows found their way to other channels, like YTV! It's funny seeing a picture of Rocko's Modern Life up there, I just downloaded the whole series and have been watching them.
Hiro Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Wow, more Nickelodeon articles. How original.

pete and pete was the greatest show ever
    firesky13 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
man I remember me and my brothers watching those shows and making sure we missed a single episode. Whenever the game shows came on, we all had our own teams we would root for. But I always remember how much I hated Guts. I don't know why but it seemed so boring to watch. That one, Hey Dude and Nick News. But every other show I would watch religously.
    joecool85 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
This is the place where I grew up watching all of these good shows that aired on the "first kids network". I wish I can go back to these days once again!

    Very good article!
cselkins Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I think that you actually tried to swing completely over the swing set once to try and become Inside Out Boy....how did that work out for ya?

whatever happened to Pinwheel. I loved that show when I was a kid.
    Zippo_Masta Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Hey Dude was my favorite show back in the early 90s. I couldn't wait for it to come on. That, and Are You Afraid of the Dark? Awesome.
ItalianStallion Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Now these are the shows that I watched. Its David the Gnome though. Kinda funny you put Genome.
    Retrogamer92 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
That article brought back memories. Mostly the Stick Stickly and Nickelodeon Studios pictures. Good job.
    doulbe_d_1983 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Alas poor Nickelodeon, we knew thee well. At least I'm not the only one who remembers David the Gnome.

This topic's been done a million times over before, but at least you can spell...and make an article be a decent read. I definately remembered Inside-Out Boy as well as every show you mentioned. My kudos go to this article!
    F1315NJ Posted 4 years 10 months ago
good times, good times. nowadays, everytime i see anything related to Nickelodeon, i see nothing but an insult to retro Nick fans. the only thing thats still on since the 90s is Spongebob
memoryman Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Nickelodeon was a very entertaining network back in the 1980s to mid 1990s. I used to watch You Can't do that on Television. It was very funny. David the Gnome was a good show too. Doug was the only Nicktoon that
I watched. Nickelodeon sure has changed over the years.
SladeGarrison Posted 4 years 10 months ago
god how I wish I could go back in time and re-live my childhood just for all the nickelodeon shows.
Ydoc Posted 4 years 10 months ago
We really had it good, didn't we? I'm sometimes I wonder if the reason it isn't as good for me anymore is because I'm older or because the product is worse. I think it's a little bit of both mainly leaning towards the watered down teeny bopper Nick we see today.
    Spectacular66 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Man, those were the freakin' days! I used to sit back and watch Nick all day long until Rugrats at 7:30 or up late on Saturday nights watching SNICK. Jesus, I miss those days...
cgimovieman Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I loved Nick too. I remember when we first got cable when I was living up north and how cool I thought it was that we got Nickelodeon. I now work in television in the Orlando area and know a ton of people who had a great stretch of 10 to 15 years working at Nick. Sadly it's pretty much completely gone from the area here now, much like most of the productions that took place by both Universal and Disney around the area in the late 80's through the 90's. It's too bad too. There was such a rich scene for all that around here. Now I guess we mostly just have our memories of Nick.
SuperSpaceGirl Posted 4 years 10 months ago
    I like Blue's Clues
Dosmosis Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Such a phenomenal article on Nickelodeon!
Some shows I had forgotten, others I've acquired and still watch.
I agree with you, couldn't imagine a childhood without it, used to archive my faves on VHS extensively.
True, even the magazine was great.
Do you remember Boney from Weinerville, what a weird show that was.
DrRockzo Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I remember waiting all day around 730-8ish waiting for doug and rugrats to come on

    those were the days
    DMoney89 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Thank God it's not another "OMFG NICK SUX!!11!!" article.

My Brother And Me was an awesome and underrated show for little black kids growing up. I don't get why people didn't like it. Maybe it was a little too urban for them...
Lil Penny Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Good stuff. Anyone see that music for XYZ Affair featuring grown-up versions of Ferguson, Budnik, and Big Pete? Pretty funny.

Short, but awesome! SNICK was the best way to spend a Saturday night. Does anyone remember the SNICK musical sketch comedy show "Roundhouse"? And David the Gnome's theme song would get stuck in my head for days: "Gnomes and witches and fairy kings, fish that talk and birds that sing and if you heart is true, than you can find him too..." Somebody stop me! Fun article.
Roadgeek Posted 4 years 10 months ago
This easily one of the better Nickelodeon articles. I like how you mainly focused on the glory of yesterday and not on the problems of today. I agree. Nickelodeon back in the day truly got a lot of its success by having a variety lineup featuring comedies, dramas, game shows, and cartoons. I definitely gave you a thumbs up.
