Everybody Loves Batman

For fans of the Dark Knight, here's an article for you.

Hello, all. Being a fellow Retrojunky for quite a while, I've learned a lot about other Retrojunkies and what kinds of interests they have. From what I seem to understand, one of the most popular franchises to a lot of people is Batman. Since there seem to be a lot of Batman fans here on Retrojunk, I thought I'd write a little article about him. Also, with the new Batman movie coming out, I feel it would be appropriate to do something like this anyway.

Batman started out as a comic book superhero in 1939 created by Bob Kane. He was inspired by a 1933 movie called "The Bat Whispers", which was a remake of a 1926 silent movie called "The Bat", to create this superhero that we all love. Originally, he was known as "The Bat Man."

Batman's first movie was released in the early 1940's. The movie was not seen by a lot of people except for maybe hardcore Batman fans. Compared to the later Batman movies, this one's not quite as good. I mean, it follows the comics pretty well, but there was still some stuff in the franchise that was still in development. Another movie came out in 1949 called "Batman and Robin", which is pretty similar to the first movie.

It was in 1966 when Batman made his first television appearance. The original "Batman" TV series was a corny series, but it was still a very memorable series (especially the theme song).

The fight scenes were always the highlights of the series. Every time a character would get hurt, the sound effect would appear on the screen. POW! BIFF! BOOM! BLAT! I guess the creators were trying to make it seem like the comic book was really coming to life. These fight scenes are so famous that they've been parodied in numerous sources in pop culture. In fact, a lot of things in this series were parodied. One of the most parodied I'd have to say would be...

"TO THE BAT-MOBILE!"

That classic transition.

The show also had a lot of nice characters. The villains in the show are all crazy and fun to watch, and most of them would continue on throughout the Batman franchise. Batman, in this series, was played by Adam West, who today, is working on "Family Guy" playing the role of...himself.

Now, I'm gonna talk about "Batman: The Movie", which was released in the late 1960's sometime. Now, I was never a huge fan of Batman, but my dad was. When he was a kid, he used to watch "Batman" all the time on his black & white TV, and when he and his sibblings saw this movie theatrically, they were all blown away by it (especially since they got to see it in color). In my opinion, this movie is campy, but it's still very memorable.

During the 1970's, Batman was mostly ignored, but in the 1980's sometime, Batman was attempting to make a return to pop culture with a darker and more serious approach. What we got was the 1989 movie, simply entitled, "Batman". This movie is a mega favorite to a lot of Batman fans, and if you were to ask someone what their top 10 or 20 or whatever movies from the 80's were, chances are this one will be high up on the list. The movie was directed by Tim Burton, and it stars Michael Keaton as Batman (as obscure as that may sound, it actually worked pretty well) and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. This was the beginning of Batman's more contemporary age.

The success of the Batman movie led to a sequel, "Batman Returns" in 1991. This movie, like the previous one, was directed by Tim Burton, and Michael Keaton is back as Batman. The villains featured in this movie were the Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Fieffer). The villains in this movie are just completely psycho. For some fans, this movie met their expectations, but most were disappointed with it. "Batman Returns" is indeed inferior to it's predecessor.

Just one year after "Batman Returns", Warner Bros. premeired one of the most memorable cartoon series' of the 90's, "Batman: The Animated Series". Since I wasn't a hardcore Batman fan, I never really got into this series. When it comes to cartoons, I tend to prefer comedy over action, and that makes me unique because if you were to ask an opinion poll to 100 people if they prefer action or comedy out of a cartoon, action would come out the clear winner. This is a show that always put me to sleep because it was so dark and quiet. Regardless, this is a series that revolutionized animation, and many people still love it to this very day. The series was renamed "Batman and Robin" in 1994. Also, two animated movies were made based on this series: "Mask of the Phantasm" (1993) and "Sub Zero" (1998).

In 1995, the third modern Batman movie, "Batman Forever" was released. Unlike the first two, this one doesn't involve Tim Burton or Michael Keaton. In this movie, Val Kilmer plays Batman, and it was directed by Joel Schumacher. This was the first Batman movie in the more modern era to feature Robin (played by Chris O'Donnell). The villains in this movie were the Riddler (Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Some people said this movie was an improvement over "Batman Returns", but most others gave complaints about it. As for me, I found it to be all over the place. There's a lot of stuff about it that could use some more back story, and the Riddler gets more screentime than any other character, not to mention, Batman is rarely ever seen in this movie.

Looking back at these Batman movies, I can clearly tell how they all went downhill, but 1997 is when they really hit the bottom of the barrell. "Batman and Robin" is considered by many as not only the worst Batman movie but also the worst movie ever to be based on a comic book superhero. There were plenty of bad superhero movies (don't even get me started on "Catwoman"), but none like this one. In this movie, George Clooney plays Batman, yet Chris O'Donnell returns as Robin. There were two villains in this movie. One was Poison Ivy (played by Uma Therman), but the main villain is Mr. Freeze (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger). I was 12 years old when this movie came out, and Mr. Freeze scared the crap out of me. He's one of the most intense movie villains I've ever seen. I don't mean to spoil anything, but Batman, Robin and Batgirl seemed to defeat Poison Ivy with no problem, but Batman spends like more than half of the movie trying to take out Mr. Freeze. If you thought Ivan Dragno was intense, then look again! You know what? I may have had different thoughts back in the late 90's, but now, I just gotta agree with the critics. "Batman and Robin" is, hands down, the worst comic book superhero movie in history!

In 1998, Warner Bros. took a different approach at the Batman franchise by making a new animated series called "Batman Beyond". The story behind this series is that Bruce Wayne has retired from crime fighting and has handed his bat suit over to his son. This pretty much wraps up this Batman era.

As you can tell, the live-action Batman movies from the 80's and 90's were somewhat disappointing as they seemed to focus more on the villains then they did on Batman. Batman made a big comeback in 2005 with a movie called "Batman Begins". This movie was a lot different as it focused primarily on Batman telling the origin story of Bruce Wayne and how he became Batman. This movie was released around the same time as another comic book superhero movie, "The Fantastic Four". This movie recieved a lot of positive feedback and did very well in the box office while "Fantastic Four" flopped.

That leads us to today. A sequel to "Batman Begins", known as "The Dark Knight", is coming out real soon...this week, in fact! I'm sure you guys are all thrilled about it.

To all you Batman fans out there, I hope this article was a real treat to you all. I also encourage you all to go out and see "The Dark Knight" while it's still in playing at theaters. And now, my night is coming to a close.

You have alot of articles in the negatives don't you :S probably the most I've ever seen from somebody.
    Marcus2 Posted 2 years 6 months ago
Hey, wasn't Batman originally a dark figure when he was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger? And was he not softened up (made nicer) in the movies and TV before the 80s?

That's the way I think it was. If I'm not mistaken the personalities of Batman and Robin of DC Comics were always more similar to those in movies and TV of today rather than those of the popular 60s TV series.

According to the original DC Comics storyline, the parents of Bruce Wayne (Batman) were murdered by some thug, no? If so, it would make sense that the Batman of the comics was never even close to the one on 60s TV.

I mean, Batman in his comics universe was probably always a vigilante like the one played by Christian Bale in the Batman movies of 2005 and 2008. As I recall, the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents and other stuff were never even mentioned in the 60s TV series.

Sorry my reply here is so long, but this article doesn't seem to acknowledge these facts I bring up. What do you think, dalmatianlover?

    I love Batman!

Wow way to be a bitch, about me giving this article a thumbs up Jake 1079. :P
Jake 1079 Posted 4 years 2 months ago
Thumbs downs, sorry but your batman article just plain sucks, and im not gonna be all sorry for you and give ya a thumbs us like Shepard the Suburbia just because your stupid. Im sticking to my opinion just because thats the only fair thing to do as a person. Sorry Dalmationlover but your are like a selfish child somtimes considering that you give hard ridicule on other peoples good articles when half the ones you do arent even worth half there weight in penmenship anyway.
udontknowjack Posted 4 years 5 months ago
Oh, whoops. Somebody please correct my poor grammar. I said names, not name.
udontknowjack Posted 4 years 5 months ago
Let's all just be glad Knites didn't do an article on Batman. If it took him a year just to do his 10 million page essay on Cammy, who knows how long it would take him to do one on Bats. And Knites I'm pretty sure you like your names in lights also, since you brag so much about your writing skills.
Shepard of Suburbia Posted 4 years 9 months ago
Look guys if Dalmationlover says he wasn't trying to rip the Angry Video Game Nerd HE WASN'T.

Dalmationlover I think you did fine on this article, considering that you aren't a big fan of Batman.

One final thing, don't mind what Knites said about you trying to gain attention.
daethstalker Posted 4 years 9 months ago
goblyn, Of course he's a dark and tortured soul, his parents were killed in an alley right in front of him! Do you really think if he would be all warm and fuzzy like the sixties? Come on man, I like the dark and tortured soul of Batman. If he weren't like that he would have a very different life.
ProphetSword Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I have to admit, when I first read this article I also thought about the AVGN Bat-a-Thon. But, to be fair, this article did come out before Parts 2 and 3 were even put online, so DL did chronicle some stuff before he did.

That being said, the article could have been way better.
dalmatianlover Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Retromania, my article was NOT intending to rip off the AVGN's Bat-a-Thon. I came up with the idea for this article long before he even announced it.

50's = Villians where more like James Bonds nemesis, they were quietly cool and NEVER lose that elegant aura... my favorite epoch I must say.
60's = Villians were genious, plans so complicated but smoothly done they were WONDERS and oh the cruelty was in white gloves indeed...
70's = Villians with guns, lots of guns indeed...
80's = GORE BLOOD AND SUCH
90's = ... Uhm... remake of the 80's but trying to make it look like 70's

In conclusion, modernism sucks and batman has been declining a bit due to commercial values... oh well, at least he doesn't wears a Coca Cola cape...
Retromania Posted 4 years 10 months ago
What a blatant rip-off of the Angry Video Game Nerd's review of the Batman series. Hell, you even use some of the key-terms that he uses in his reviews. I think you idolize him way too much.
goblyn Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I didn't care for the article, but I wanted to put my agreement with an earlier poster who said that they like the 60's TV Batman better than the movies. I agree! Frankly, I thought the movies BUTCHERED the concept (and I personally love Tim Burton, so go figure). If you want to do a movie about a brooding deep dark superhero don't pick the campiest super hero there is. If you read some of the original comics (and really any of the ones that predate the Burton movie) you'll see that Batman was a joke. Sure the comics and tv show were amusing, but in no way shape or form do they resemble the Batman Burton created. And that the newer movies simply take this to an extreme bugs me. Making him a serious dark tortured soul really sucks all the campy fun that the tv show was right out of the material for me.
    bacaj77 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I agree DL poorly researched a character they knew nothing about. Maybe next time spend more time researching and less time bashing everyone else's articles ;)
Achilles Posted 4 years 10 months ago
agree that Burton's Batman is the best. I mean, look at that picture of 60s Batman and the picture of Burton's Batman below it. Hellova difference, isnt it? thats what Burton did with Batman. Nolan didnt reinvent the wheel, he didnt do anything new or groundbreaking. He simply went back to Burton's/Miller's formula and made it more modern and violent, but the wheel was already invented by someone else

CeciliaFett Wrote: Bruce Wayne isn't the father of the Batman Beyond Batman. His dad was murdered like Bruces dad was.

Actually in an episode of Justice League Unlimited titled "Epilogue" we learn that Terry IS actually Bruce's biological son. It's kinda weird. You'd have to watch the Episode.
CeciliaFett Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Bruce Wayne isn't the father of the Batman Beyond Batman. His dad was murdered like Bruces dad was.

The 60's Batman movie was a guilty pleasure of mine as a kid, because even then I could laugh at its corny cheesiness.
    StarSprinkles84 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Chris O'Donnell is hot as Robin. And well the original Robin was my very first crush :) Matter of fact, Robin is the reason for my fetish of men wearing masks like Robin (the original Robin that is) does :-P
thewhitewilsmith Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I thoroughly disagree. Batman Returns is far superior to Batman (1989)

And just for the record, The Dark Knight was nothing short of amazing.
    LordBen50 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Everybody loves Batman. Not quite sure that everyone loves this article, though.
Knites Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I figured with The DARK Knight coming out so soon there would be a few Batman articles showing up. This one is definitely a training-wheels piece for someone who knows very little about The Bat so it is well done in that respect. However, I also get a sense DL was a bit of a training-wheels writer this time and rushed to post this piece. It's poor formatting, noticable amount of errors, and lack of research really reflect poorly on a writer who has been with this site for so long and, consequently, recieved alot of feedback for improvement. However, in DL's defence, a well-researched Batman article would be a monster task: a two or three parter at least. And, judging by the amount of care taken here, It might very well be BEYOND (forgive the slight pun) our favorite puppy's ability to accomplish. He prefers his name in lights, but isn't to worried if it's poorly presented. Thanks for the read.
    uchuukeji69 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
It was an okay article for people that don't know much behind the history of Batman.
taciturnwes Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Batman's one of my favorite superheroes and this isn't a bad article per se, but feels lazily reasearched possessing multiple errors.
Ravenloft Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Batman is one of the few if any DC comics characters that can rake in a decent box office score in the wake of the Marvel movie madness. the new Superman didn't do so hot. DC just got out competed plain and simple.I like the new movies' realistic approach because Batman was always about how Bruce Wayne was just a normal guy (with cool toys) who still could kick butt and claim superhero status.
Hoju Koolander Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I have been shown the light by the arachknight, who made me aware that while not on the Batman Beyond series, but on Justice League Unlimited Terry was revealed to have some Bruce Wayne DNA in him-so I stand corrected. My apologies for having accused "dal...lover" of Holy Bat-Fact-Fabrication!
krantzbucks Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I believe that "Batman Beyond" was revealed to be Bruce Wayne's son in the series' wrap-up in the Timm-verse Justice League animated series
Borgem Posted 4 years 10 months ago
You forgot to mention Bill Finger, who was the co-creator of the Batman character along with Kane.
    tbondrage99 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Nice article. I'll pretty much give anything with Batman a thumbs up but this one deserved it. Good job.
    cannibalholocaust77 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Good article. I personally am one of the few Batman fans who is not looking forward to the new Batman movie. I didn't really care for the one before where they butchered Ras Al Ghoul's character. Maybe I like the comics way to much to give flying harry shit about another bondage version of Batman. As cheesy as the 60's show was at least it represented it's source material accurately. Now I'm asked to put up with Heath Ledger as the Joker? Nah, fuck that! He's was never a very good actor regardless of what people claim. But enough of my soapboxing, I liked the article and I guess it needed to be done and at least there is an audience for that new film I'm just not one of them.
    knuclear200x Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I first loved Batman when i saw Beyond, being an action person this one had way more than the TAS (except for the later seasons which i missed) then the Justice League came on and i loved him even more. i think maybe u should have thrown that in here as well...MAYBE.
rowemedic Posted 4 years 10 months ago
i gave it a thumbs up because i like you and your articles. i found the article fun read and informative but, it was a little short on the details.
TreyVore Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Very nice dude. You covered I think everything. Thumbs up from me. :)
Hoju Koolander Posted 4 years 10 months ago
A nice, quick recap of Batman in pop culture. I don't know about Batman Beyond being Batman's son, though-I think you made that up. (for shame) Unless I missed the episode where that was revealed, in that case my apologies. Very timely though, I guess that's another secret of the high rankers revealed.

kylewhite Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Good article though. Batman is the best :)

Cant wait to see the new movie. I'll always take the time out to read a Batman Article...You should write an article on Batman Video games.

Did you know that the "Angry Video Game Nerd" did a review of the Batman Franchise and hit on many of the things you hit? Here is the link if you are interested http://cinemassacre.com/NEWS/news.html
