Childhood Junk Food

A few of my junk food favorites as a child

JUNK FOOD, two words that hold their own against such important childhood legends like toys, video games, and cartoons. No matter what the occasion, junk food provided many awesome memories for me as a child. From the attractive packing, to the goodness that awaited inside; junk food was a kid must that helped shape our unforgettable childhoods.
I have made a list of general junk food items I enjoyed as a kid. No, not every thing I treasured as a child is on this list, just a few of the many favorites. So let's not waste anymore time, here they are....

Even though this may not be considered junk food, any chance I get to proclaim my love for Ecto Cooler...I will take. Ecto Cooler has to go down as one of the best drinks ever in my book. I downed boxes upon boxes of Slimer's home brewed juice in my childhood days, only to be disturbed by the fact that it doesn't exist anymore. If only Slimer had any idea that we have to face this injustice, I believe that we would have Ghostbusters on speed dial.

What can I say about this snack, it was great! Dunkaroos featured cookies on one side of the tray and icing dip on the other. It allowed us to evenly distribute the icing per cookie, or go all out and scoop the icing with one cookie; leaving all the other cookies...well icingless (that should be a word). No matter how I chose to eat them, Dunkaroos were fun, not my favorite cookie by any means, but fun.

As a child, I often wondered if there was any kid who didn't like fruit snacks, especially fruit snacks with gooey sugary centers. I loved these things, although I didn't get them that much. I usually received character themed fruit snacks instead (not that I'm complaining), leaving gushers for more high end junk food times, like birthday parties. These stick to your teeth snacks were among my favorite fruit snack varieties as a child.

Man o man, how many of these babies did I eat back in the day? If you were anything like me and my friends, you may have had challenges to see who could eat their war heads without making a face. I quickly developed a strategy that proves to work to this day (I will sell it to you for $5...any takers?).

Oh boy, even to this day I get excited when I see a package of fruit stripe gum. Even the zebra on the front pack knows how good his gum is, by giving us that over confident yet deserved smile. This was by far my favorite sugary gum as a kid, providing many empty tattoo wrappers and a desire to chew as many pieces at one time as possible. No other gum compared to this, prove me wrong...

Okay, Okay...even though it's not as good as Fruit Stripe, six feet of gum is pure insanity. SIX FEET of gum??? Who comes up with this stuff, better yet, who cares...it was good! I can rest easy at night, knowing that I at many times in my life I had six feet of bubble gum in my stomach...we are a blessed country I tell you.

These bad boys take me all the way back to kindergarten, when I would take them for snack time. Not only did Handi-Snacks provide tasty treats, it gave you that little red stick you could use after eating, for any evil plot you may have dreamed up while eating processed cheese and saltine crackers (or bread sticks if you were lucky). Like Dunkaroos, Handi-Snacks gave you the option to eat as little or as much cheese per cracker that you wanted. We were learning freedom at such a young age, yet we never knew.

Does anyone remember these from back in the day? Even though I am pretty sure this is an updated version, I can remember eating Fred Flintstone push ups when I was in diapers! Okay, maybe not that early...but you get the picture. These sherbet flavored ice cream treats were some of my favorite frozen goodies of my childhood. Yes, there was many good choices out there (mostly from Popsicle), but these featured Fred Flintstone! Regardless, I liked them, so they are staying on my list!

To close this article up, I am going to throw good ol' Doritos up here. I know, I know, we all eat them today, but can't you remember liking them as a kid? I sure do, and they seemed to be hard to come by too. Maybe it was that classic bag that holds my interest, but when I think about childhood junk food...Doritos is...well, not on the top of my list, but they are just as important as the next snack.
There you have it folks, just a few of my favorite junk food items as a kid. It is funny, how most of these items you can still buy today. Maybe it's because they are all legends around the junk food world, or maybe it's because companies continue to reap profits from them. No matter, they were good, and they are worthy of this small amount of spot light I can provide for them. I would have liked to put more, but maybe we can save that for a part II or something. I am sure you all have your favorites, so let's hear about them in the comments section! Thanks for reading, until next time...

Doritos was my fav flavor of chips growing up, but not anymore. Not since they ruined them with that "supercharged" crap a few years back.
    Method101 Posted 3 years 2 months ago
great article! They still make Dunkaroos! Just go to Amazon.com and you can order them there!
    juuice501 Posted 4 years 2 months ago
I liked all these things.I would only put a little icing on the dunkaroos and then put all the rest on the last one.Did the same with the cheese and crackers. Wish they still made Dunkaroos.

i think the best childhood gum is Big League Chew. stuffing a wad of that stuff was always fun. and it made me feel like a tough guy like the one pictured on the package. plus, it's flavor lasted more than 12 seconds, one major draw-back to fruit stripes.

I was a fiend for those cheese and cracker snack packs.

I remember always snacking on the Hi-C juice boxes and the pudding packs.
ilovemohawks Posted 4 years 9 months ago
I ate all of those except Hi-C & the fruit stripes [I never had one till just a year ago!]. Yum, this is making me so hungry!
    Pearl725 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
Gushers were the best, and Dunkaroos I hear they don't make Dunkaroos anymore which is sad.

My grandpa always bought the Flintstones push pops, it was rare that my parents would put out for the junk food. But a visit to good ole' grandma and grandpas promised a mouth coated in sticky ice cream, and a stomach with some mushy cardboard inside for many years.

Fruit Stripes was ok, but I always preferred the cherry Bubble Tape so sugary.

And Warheads oooooh the contests! I remember the neighborhood kids would all gather our pocket change and head down to the corner ice cream shop that sold the best candy. You could get Warheads for a penny a piece. We'd all shell out and get as many as possible then spend time seeing who could put the most in their mouth at once. One time my friend was convinced she could do 5 lemons... she threw up in the cranky old mans yard next door... good times.

Handi-Snacks and MooTowns were all my parent's would buy along with those pealable cheese sticks which were just gross. I still love Handi-Snacks today!

I have very specific memories about every junk food on your list! (Except Ecto Cooler--I've heard of it, but I don't think I ever had it.) Love the article.
zomnificent Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I ate all of these things as well, especially Warheads, Gushers, Fruit Stripe, and those Flintstones Push-ups, which had to have been one of my first foods.

I will say that Fruit Stripe is over rated. The flavor is gone in 30 seconds. I mostly ate it to get the tattoos.

Doritos are great, I would eat those at lunch a lot. I also loved Cheetos, and I remember wiping the cheesy powder that they left on my fingers onto the bright blue sweatpants I was wearing. I didn't give a damn.

Also, you forgot Lunchables. I know they aren't junk food, but they sure are awesome.
    Blaze2001 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Oh, wow, I ate all this stuff growing up! =)
oldgamesrbetter Posted 4 years 11 months ago
    Holy taste bud orgasm
SuzanneHIH Posted 4 years 11 months ago
mmm Fruit Stripe! I still buy that stuff. It's one of the only gums without a bunch of chemical sweeteners in it. Even sugar is becoming retro these days. YIKES
My daughter just had her first sherbet treats known as "push-ups". No Fred Flinstone on these though, Sponge Bob is the featured character in the freezer as of June 2008.
    officeguy25 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Dead on with all of the snacks. I used to eat every last one of those, especially the Fred Flintstone push-ups and the Dunkaroos. One addition would have been Squeeze-Its. They had a different character on every bottle and had a permanent spot in my grade school lunchbox.

I thought Fruit Stripes were cool.
    PuNkYpOwEr80 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Oh my!...ecto cooler was in my lunch box everyday!...I even remember they had the economy sized metal cans of it in the supermarket...it was like the "Tang" of our generation!...great article!
    o0RainbowBrite0o Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Wow, those are all my favorite childhood foods too! (excluding Doritos, which I think smell like ass)
    fit_n_fun Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Dude you nailed it with these foods! Push-Ups were awesome (I dug the green and blue flavors), and I chewed Fruit Stripe by the pack! And of course, Ecto Cooler was my boxed beverage of choice. The scary thing is, with the exception of a few, these delectable treats are still available! Hmm, I'd better update my shoppin' list...
stevensampieri Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Just you wait Warren...Big League Chew is in part two! Wow, that rhymed.
Warren Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Haha...nice article...brings back lots of memories, the only thing I might would add is Big League Chew, that gum that was packaged and shredded to look like tobacco. I can remember playing home run derby in the back yard and all of us kids would stick like a whole pouch of that in our mouth haha..
    rlf75 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Never heard of Ecto=Coolers neither but the rest were awesome. I believe that the idea of the six feet of gum was to encourage sharing or something because all the students that I teach, when they get a roll of that stuff, thats all they do -- share it. The Push-Ups were AWESOME. I remember eating those with my brothers and cousins if we did good on our report card or progress reports in school. Man someone needs to invent a time machine TODAY!!
Hanochan Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Ecto Cooler doesn't ring a bell for me, are you referring to the juice boxes? I bet you could find a lot of this at a dollar store.
mightymorphinmanda Posted 4 years 11 months ago
ecto-cooler and dunkaroos for sure....but i was a big squeeze pop fan and i still eat them when this store in the mall here has them...only place i can find them except the sour ones and they are horrible.
    StarSprinkles84 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I remember the Push-Ups!Those were yummy :) And the Fruit Stripe gum! That Zebra rocked!
    Ninjaturtles1600 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
All good stuff, I remember everything basically on your list. I also would probably put Fruit by the Foot on there, I ate that stuff with my lunch all the time when I was a kid.
eightiesfreakz Posted 4 years 11 months ago
wish they sold all those goodies here in the UK!..still, we had nerds, looool!..xxxxx.
angryellow Posted 4 years 11 months ago
You had me at Ecto Cooler. What else can be said about it? Not only was it green (automatic coolness), but it was freakin' GOOD to boot!
    IronMan448 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Great article. I remember eating/drinking everything you listed...and loved every minute of it.
Voculus Posted 4 years 11 months ago
You forgot to mention Zots and Airheads! =)
applepwnz Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Nice article!!! Nothing about "Mondo" though? I used to loove that stuff as a kid (and actually just recently I found out that they must still make it somewhere because you can get a 6 pack at my local dollar store!) :-D
    lynn314 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I loved Slimer Orange Hi-C we always used to have at school parties like Halloween or end of the school year! When ever I used to visit my mom-mom and pop-pop's house she used to have Flintstone push-up pops in the freezer waiting for me and my younger brothers! Orange ws my favorite and she also bought ones that had sprinkles in them! You can still find flinstone push-ups at some grocery stores! I miss camfire marshmallow treats and Mickey Mouse icepops that included Donald Duck and Goofy too in the box.The flavors were cherry, orange, and grape. My friends always used to come to my grandparent's house for them. When I visited my mom-mom and pop-pop's house I knew there were always be something good to eat, lol!
    the-micro-man Posted 4 years 11 months ago
    War-Heads... THOSE were the shit...
    retrogod81 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Amazing article. You hit every memory right on the head.
cselkins Posted 4 years 11 months ago
This is the funniest article about junk food EVER!! But, what about Quackers? Anyone remember the powder coated crackers in the shape of ducks??
cowandchicken Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Cool article. I remember all of those. War Heads have always been my favorite!
    retrowarrior361 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
    war heads r awsome
brantleyjackson Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Awesome Article Dude. I had forgotten all about Dunkaroos.
gunstarhero Posted 4 years 11 months ago
    Nice article, thumbs up.
dalmatianlover Posted 4 years 11 months ago
When I was a kid, I used to think "junk food" literally meant garbage! lol! But, no, it was just food that wasn't good for you. I remember all the snacks you mentioned! Thumbs way up!
    PaLaDiN91 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Dude, this might as well be my junk food list. This is so much like me.
taciturnwes Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Awesome article, I loved Dunkaroos as a kid, I wish they still existed. Since you included Doritos I would've also included Cheetos, the snack food equivalent of heroin. I swear I could (and still can) polish an entire bag of those in one sitting they're so good. Very enthusiastic thumbs up!
Ydoc Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I love all that shit, but the sugar high if you chew a whole pack of Fruit Stripe is blinding.
    RetroRickster923 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I love most of those!! Good aricle.
    bat0h0lic Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I don't like the new taste of Doritos, and isn't Hawaiian Punch's orange ocean close to the Ecto Cooler?
LivelyLorikeet Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Reading about junk food makes me want to write about it. And eat it. I need some Hostess cakes.
    moe93 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
This is an awesome article. I don't see that many jnukfood articles in RetroJunk. But you should have added froot rollups and froot by the foot, those were good. And you also forgot a classic...... The OREO. One of the best creations known to man.
Spottedfeather Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Some of my favourites from when I was a kid were Croonchy Stars cereal, TMNT cereal, Chocobliss (sort of a layered chocolate Twinkie), and something that I desperately wish they would bring back....even if they weren't on the wrapper, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles "Ooze" custard pies !
frostydude Posted 4 years 11 months ago
