Whenever we sit down to the nightly news no matter where we live, we see images of different criminals or terrifying events taking place even as you read this article. In this article I am going to talk about two images that have changed the world and me.

01. The Ethiopian Girl

This image is from an Ethiopian Famine Film that was taken in 1984. It was created by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). This single image is of a young girl named Birhan Wouldu. She was only minutes to death at the time, and was only one of the many children who were dying during the Ethiopian Famine of 1984. This same famine inspired the Songs "Do they know It's Christmas?" and "We are the World". Then later on, a concert titled "Live Aid" took place on July 13th 1985.

Above is the Stadium where the Wembly Concert took place. If you want to learn more about Live Aid go to this address: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Aid

As for Birhan Wouldu, well the reason this image is so signmificent is because she survived the Ethiopian Famine after being given Re-Hydryation Shots. Recently (well, more like three years ago) she appeared at another concert called "Live 8" which took place on July 02nd 2005. The below image is one of Birhan then and how she looks now.

02. The Afghan Girl

The image above is of a Afghan Girl. This photo is the most popular photo ever featured in 'National Geographic'. As I recall the image was the cover of the June 1985 issue of 'National Geographic'. The image of the girl has shaken the world for many years, with the young girl's striking green eyes which pierce into you. It was many years until the photographer who took this photo went back to find the girl and this image below is how the young girl looked back then and looks now:

This image was possible taken in late 2002, early 2003. That is, the one on the right is how the woman now looks. To learn more about this woman's story go to:http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2002/04/afghan-girl/index-text

These are only two of the images that have shaken the world and I'm sure in the future there will be many many more.
