Logos of the Past

A look back on some of the most well-known logos.

Brand names are everywhere. You pretty much can't go anywhere outside (or inside, for that matter) without seeing some company's logo, whether it be a logo for a clothing company, a car establishment, a restaurant, cleaning supplies, or food products. They are everywhere. Most of the time, they tend to go unnoticed. We get so used to seeing them, we don't really think twice as we're walking by.

Over the years, they change. Most of them do not stay the same. Companies like to represent themselves as being up-to-date and fresh, and one of the ways of doing that is redesigning their logos. This article will cover a few of these logo changes. Some of them were only slightly modified, others were completely redone.

FOOD

Changes to fast food and junk food logos are easy to track, since there are so many of them and so much money is spent on advertising. They are extremely recognizable. Looking at the logos pictured above, it is interesting to note that they share some similarities in the design modifications. The newer ones tend to slant. They are also more asymmetrical.

These old neon Arby's signs are still scattered in many places all over the country, but most Arby's restaurants have replaced them with newer plastic lighted signs.

Doritos. These were my favorite growing up. I tended to prefer salty things over sweets. The bag design has changed numerous times in the past 20 years. In 1990 it was the bag labeled "older". In the mid '90s it was the "old" bag, by 2000 it was the "new" bag, and currently it is the "newer" bag.

Sprite only just recently got a new design. The name, which was once much larger than the little lemon/lime picture above it is now a lot smaller, and the picture has grown and been redesigned. It now slightly resembles a green and yellow yin yang.

Dr Pepper is similar to Sprite in that the name on the side of the can shrunk. The typeface also changed.

STORES

For Safeway's redesign, they decided to stay with the S. They inverted the colors, and gave the S a slight slant. They also got rid of the Food & Drug.

This is a case where they seem to have completely done away with the old and did a total revamp. While they kept the orange from the O's of the old logo, everything else is different. Now incorporated into the design is a circular image. The orange part is most likely supposed to be a P, but it is very abstract.

DELIVERY COMPANIES

For this one, the name was taken out of the rectangle, shortened up, and the font was changed. There is now an arrow hidden in there, between the E and the X.

The old one was in two parts, and was supposed to resemble a package and a badge. In the current logo, the package is gone and it is just the badge.

The logo for the United States Postal Service has stayed an eagle, but instead of the entire eagle, it is now just the head. Both of them are very distinct. In some cases it may be hard to tell that it is in fact an eagle.

TELEVISION

The Nick at Nite logos seem to change when the lineup changes. When the lineup of shows change, the audience changes. Right now, the current Nick at Nite lineup consists mainly of shows that were on in the 90s, and the 90s were a very slimefilled time. The current orange logo looks like it is trying to remind viewers of that.

The animal planet one is one of major redesign. They got rid of the elephant and the world, and changed the typeface. They also put the M on its side.

From a personal standpoint, I think I would have kept the old one. The elephant worked well, as did as the picture of the earth. It incorporated both an animal, and the planet.

The Comedy Central logo became more simplified, and the words Comedy Central became larger and more pronounced. The use of red also makes it stand out more.

COMPUTERS AND INTERNET

In this redo, AOL went for simplicity. They dropped the use of their entire name, and instead went with their abbreviation. They kept the triangle, flipped it over, and made it look three dimensional.

When my mom bought her first computer in 1992, the Apple logo was a rainbow of colors. Eventually, Apple moved towards the clear and glassy look. They got rid of the color, and added a shiny three dimensional appearance.

Also, several years ago, Apple Computers dropped the "Computers" part of their name, due to the fact that their markets consisted of more than just computers.

These are just a few of the many changes to logos and company images that have taken place over the years. Who knows what will change next?

Change just for the sake of change. Did you ever all the members who contribute to retrojunk if they wanted this design? Did you ask all the people who visit your site and contribute to your traffic & ad revenue if they felt retrojunk needed a boring new look? Should have at least taken a poll. Just the owners of this site screwing it up. Lame

Too bad this article was made before the newer Comedy Central logo they have now, which is pure crap. Easily one of the worst redesigns ever.
    wh1teb0y101 Posted 6 months 13 days ago
I hate how all the newer logos look so futuristic
    caligari1 Posted 8 months 12 days ago
I loved the old doritos logo and taco bell they are better than the newer ones i feel so nostoliga i was born in 1999 but i like being retro and i will stay that way.
    199478q29 Posted 1 year 3 months ago
The new Pepsi logo is crap like most modern logos today the Pepsi logos i remember growing up on where a lot better & this is why i stopped drinking Pepsi because there logo changed i don't care what you guys say that's me the only time you will see me drink it nowadays is in a sit down restaurant so there.
    IowaGirl82 Posted 1 year 7 months ago
Pizza Hut's old logo was a classic, I hate the new one! I dislike that companies feel that their font has to be all angular - if everyone does it, it's not really hip now, is it?

I prefer the old Burger King logo too.

Interesting that McDonald's hasn't changed it's logo in a long time. Because the old way is best!
    199478q29 Posted 2 years 13 days ago
I love all these old logos I remember most of them here like BK KFC Doritos Taco Bell Long John Silvers Fed Ex Nick at Night Ect. great article.
BIGMercenary Posted 2 years 7 months ago
The Arby's near where I live has that giant cowboy hat sign. It's ridiculous and the building is outdated. Some rebrands and logo changes are good, others just make me wonder what idiot thought of what.
    raph89 Posted 2 years 11 months ago
I gave you a thumbs up, but what I don't understand is how can an article on something so simple such as logos get such a high rating?
Kablam Phantom Posted 3 years 3 months ago
And now, Nickelodeon changed from their famous orange splat to crappy lowercase letters.
    ERICT71 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
I USETA LOOOOOVE THE OLD PIZZA HUT LOGO ;)
CharityIchiban Posted 4 years 5 months ago
On the fast food logos, 4 out of the six you show (PH, LJS, KFC,TB) are owned by (my current city) Louisville's own Yum! Brands. When you look at them again knowing that, can you see that the new logos all somehow look similar to each other while still maintaining their independent brand identity? My guess is they had the same design firm do all 4. Somehow they all look similar, i think it's something about the colors...the yum fast food logos all seem kind of cartoon-ey. Sometimes, really retro looking logos that seem like they haven't been updated in 30 years actually stand out more. Have you seen the new Captain D's logo? What's your take on it?
    sara_static Posted 4 years 7 months ago
i've never seen the new sprite logo other than in this article
applepwnz Posted 4 years 7 months ago
Great article! I really prefer the old Doritos bag myself, but luckily there are still all kinds of delivery trucks driving around with the old packaging on the side at least.
AndyP Posted 4 years 9 months ago
There actually is a Taco Bell near me that still uses the old logo. One thing I noticed about older signs from that time period was they usually also had a oval shaped sign next to the building and instead of neon it was just a colered light. I remember most of those logos except for the LGS one, (I have never been to one), the old apple, and the oldest Doritos bag. Really well written and I agree with many points.
    Pearl725 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I love this article, it was fun to read as an advertising major and to figure out the correlation of the changes and the time periods. Most things are sleek, simple and abstract now as the simple shapes used can help a person relate better to the logos, and make them more memorable. You're right about the Nick at Night logo, the 90's shows are going to be more likely to be watched by 90's kids (a lot now in their 20's) the logo is nostalgic to those times.
    starfox81 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
i think animal planet was stupid to change a logo to one that had a sideways m
zomnificent Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I definitely agree on the Animal Planet logo. They should have kept the old one. Discovery Channel's logo has changed as well, and I know I don't like the new one.

I like Sprite's old logo better, for sure. But I like Comedy Central's new logo better.

Finally, Nick at Nite is playing stuff from the 90's? I'd better start watching it. I remember back in the 90's it was always playing TV Land - really old shows like I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, and the Dick Van Dyke Show - stuff I would never watch. Now that has gotten it's own channel.
    CartoonNetwork90s Posted 4 years 11 months ago
They should bring back those old logos.
KatieM Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I haven't seen the new Sprite cans yet, but I sure will miss the old ones! Feels like a part of my childhood just died...
    EZR09 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I was picky about Burger King until I was 11.
Hanochan Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I'm glad to know the Pizza Hut my family and I usually go to still has the original logo.
Harpsiccord Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I didn't even notice that they changed the Payless logo. I'm not into shoes, but that just hurts somehow. How dare they?
    riddle84 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Cool stuff. I really miss the old Pizza Hut logo, but I think the people at Taco Bell did themselves a favor by changing their logo, as well as the people at Apple. This is a little bit off-topic, but why the hell did they stop making Doritos 3D? They were some of the best chips ever!
gamerman Posted 4 years 11 months ago
    old is better
    luckyfanpup101 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I'd like to see the Mountain Dew logo, the Cartoon Network logo, and the Disney Channel/Toon Disney logo, please.
    EZR09 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I threw a tandrum when I was little at Burger King or at one of the those restaurants we ate at because I was picky by telling my teachers that I didn't want the food they had there and they said. "Eat your fries!" I didn't eat much. They told my family about what I did.
    Evil_Iron Posted 5 years 12 days ago
Hmmm, all the old looks much better then the new.
orliaurelijah Posted 5 years 21 days ago
I might write a second installment, but if I do, it won't be for awhile. I'm short on time at the moment!

There are really an endless amount of logo modifications and designs that could be talked about. If I were to write another one, what are some of the logos you'd want to see? I'm very much open to suggestions.
    orlando81 Posted 5 years 23 days ago
I like the older logos better. They are more recognizable than the newer ones. They should not have tried to upgrade them.
    TV1985 Posted 5 years 25 days ago
Will there be a "Logos of the Past part 2?" Because there are a whole lot more you can mention for Logos from the past.
    CartoonNetwork90s Posted 5 years 25 days ago
Good for you. I wish those logos were back, though
Ydoc Posted 5 years 26 days ago
    Fun article. Good job.
Ravenloft Posted 5 years 26 days ago
I really wish this article was more in depth...I would love to know some dates to go with the logo changes. Interesting that it shot right up the rating charts. congrats orliaurelijah. I think most of these changes are recent say early 90's perhaps though. It would be really cool to see the same article but track the logos into like the 60s or something. The early 80's are the most nostalgic for me and I seem to remember older ones than the ones shown.
    YoJoe83 Posted 5 years 26 days ago
whoever did payless's new logo is a genius. I like that new one...
Yodamite Posted 5 years 27 days ago
KFC did not change their name because of any trademark issue. That was a story made up for Snopes "Lost Legends" page (the same page also claims that Mr. Ed was really a Zebra). Snopes' official word on KFC backs up what has been said about KFC's early 90s focus on healthier menu items, and de-emphasizing the word "fried".

    1. Kentucky Fried Chicken already trademarked their name. "The Commonwealth of Kentucky" couldn't take it away from them if they wanted to.

    2. There is no record of any legal action taken by "The Commonwealth of Kentucky", nor any registration of that trademark by "The Commonwealth of Kentucky".

    3. The same urban legend makes the additional claim that the Kentucky Derby changed its name. That never happened.

    4. Wikipedia lists this as one of two debunked urban legends. The other one is the nonsense about "fake chicken".

I found this site with old gas station logos after reading your article.
    www.gassigns.org
Some photos have the gas prices too. Check out the gas prices!!

Again, great article. I like the old, not-too-flashy logos.

I hate the new Animal Planet logo.
orliaurelijah Posted 5 years 1 month ago
xantutsuken - As a matter of fact I did make them myself, with Photoshop. The other site must have taken them. Weird.
ChrisRJ Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I completely forgot about the old Taco Bell logo. Who knew old logo's could be so nostalgic as well?

A lot of other logos got changed too.. like Hasbro, Konami, VH1, Disney Channel... sometimes for the worst.
chokeslam Posted 5 years 1 month ago
If I had to express my reaction to this article in one phraze it would be, "Now that you mention it ....". Due to the fact that corperate logos have become such a constant part of the backdrop of America, I hardly take notice of them anymore. I supose it is because of this that I really hadn't noticed how they had changed over the years. But now that you mention it I do remember all those old-school logos. Another one you might have mentioned is K-Mart. The logo used to consist of a giant red K lined with neon lighting which sat atop a post. Now-a-days the K is much smaller and has been confined within a white back ground (not nearly as impressive IMHO). Great article, thumbs up.
Xantutsuken Posted 5 years 1 month ago

See, that's what I'm talking about! Awesome Trivia! Thanks, CharlesxBronson85! I'm all tingly!
    CharlesxBronson85 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I was looking into the KFC name change to see if there was any truth to the whole "they don't use real chickens so they had to change there name thing." Turns out that was a myth which isn't surprising. Also they did claim to change there name because of puplics changing opinion on fried foods. However it turns out the state of Kentucky back in 1990 was so heavily in debt that they trademarked the name "Kentucky" therefore KFC or any business using the word Kentucky would have to pay the state. So while the whole fried foods thing worked in the PR dept. It turns out they were really just trying to save money. And that's your lesson for the day... Class dismissed.
goblyn Posted 5 years 1 month ago
This is an interesting topic for an article, but I will agree with some of the other people who say its too picture heavy and lacking text or really...a point. Granted its interesting, but I don't think it deserves the high rating its gotten so far. Yet another case of the "pretty pictures = thumbs up" mentality of the average retrojunk "reader"
Funky Guy Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Imagine how much stationary, napkins, containers, etc, with their old logos companies must throw away.
    ________

I've personally seen a demonstration of that. My dad still has a boatload of cube shaped notepads from the company he used to work for dating back to 1988.
Yodamite Posted 5 years 1 month ago
That's true about KFC trying to de-emphasize the "Fried" part of their name. This was around the time that they introduced Rotisserie Gold Roasted Chicken. KFC was banking on roasted chicken becoming huge--even branching off into new menu items that utilized unused roasted chicken as chicken toquitos and BBQ chicken sandwiches.

They also introduced the short-lived item Garden Rice, which I loved. Let's face it, most Americans would rather eat potatoes than rice. Especially in the mid-west.
Knites Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Imagine how much stationary, napkins, containers, etc, with their old logos companies must throw away. Imagine how much money they must spend to change their logos on every single store. It makes my head hurt just thinking about it!

In terms of Kentucky Fried Chicken, I heard they changed to "KFC" to remove the word "fried" from the sight of their customers. At the time of the change, their was a "freak-out" against fried foods in America and KFC didn't want people to shy away from their product.

This is a good topic for a piece, although anyone can post pictures like this. There is alot of untapped text potential here. Most of the time, the text in this piece explains what can be seen in the pics--a rather redundant approach. It would have would have been nice to see more research/trivia to explain the individual company sign changes. There is a bit, but more would have made this article really tingle the brain. A quick phone call or e-mail to the companies toll-free offices, or perhaps a little web searching might have done the job. I know for a fact McDonalds has an info line set up for this kind of thing.

Of course, that's just my two cents--take them or leave them as always, fellow retrojunker. It's just I like to see a good dose of "why" in "Before and After" lists--makes the whole thing feel complete. However, as simply a "picture article", this piece definitely brings back the memories.

    Thanks for the show.

I'll extend the comment I made last night. I couldn't write much last night because I was busy.

I've always been an advertising nut. Heck, when I was a baby, my parents had to record commercials on videotape for me to watch. I wish I still had those tapes.

I've seen those old Arby's signs before. I think there's one around here on the other side of town.

Oh and I remember getting mad back in 2006 when Sprite changed their emblem. That new one just doesn't look right.

I've never really been a fan of Doritos, but those old Doritos emblems still generated some nostalgia.

This is definitely one of the greatest Retro Junk articles I've read in a long time. Thank you!
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Yeah, the Animal Planet logo is just all-around bad. It doesn't flow and it doesn't represent "animal" or "planet". What was the point of turning the M on its side and making it a different color? It looks kinda like a 3, but...why do that?

I also miss the old Pepsi cans. I remember when they made that huge deal out of the new can back in like 1991 or something.

Oh, there's an Arby's with the old-school sign like that about a mile from my house. It's pretty awesome.

Nobody's mentioned the Cheetos bag yet. I liked the old ones better...the new ones are too busy and...orange.
    the-micro-man Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I seriously miss old logos. Logos today are a little too flashy and "3D"-looking. I still really don't like the new Apple logo. Isn't fewer colors a step DOWNWARD?
    ron626 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Cool article, was hoping to see the evolution of the Pepsi labels but good nonetheless.....Thumbs up dude
Voculus Posted 5 years 1 month ago
The new Animal Planet logo is terrible, just for the record. =)
ProphetSword Posted 5 years 1 month ago
There was a recent thread in the Something Awful forums that was exactly like this. (Not to worry, I'm not about to accuse you of copying the thread or anything). There were quite a few more than these over there, and it's pretty interesting to see how things change over the years.

Someone else said this isn't really retro, but I think it is...the memories that come flooding back to me when I see some of these old logos are pretty strong. Sometimes, you get so used to the *new* logo, you forget the old one even existed until you see it again.

Good article. I'm a very visual person and am always noticing these things. I miss some of the old classic logos. It's funny to look WAY back at some of these companies in the 50's or 60's. If they were around that is. Some of them look so basic or strange back then. If you ever look up old commercials that aren't on here but on YouTube, you can see some of them. My personal favorites are the old cereal boxes and how they changed some of their names to appear healthier
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Nice article! I'm such a nerd for things like this. I prefer most of the old logos, though I'm not sure if it's because of the fond memories or if it's because they just look...friendlier. Nowadays they're all slanted and abstract, as if they're rushing past at high speed.
    jango52577 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Interesting observations, orliaurelijah! After Y2K, a lot of companies began to phase out their old designs in favor of sleeker, more extreme looking images. In fact many things became more "extreme" after the year 2000. It's funny to think that this current generation will be called "Generation X-treme" someday.

In Fort McMurray they still have the old pizza hut logo. The old DQ and Burger King and safeway logo's were better. Man I hate that they changed logos. It's all the 21st centuries fault. The companies changed logo's to keep up with the new millenium. Man I wish it was the 90's again. The 90's was the era of computers games and cartoons.

I think many of the changes to the fast-food signs were a big improvement, but I don't like the changes to the Sprite cans. Cool article, one of the logos I remember was the mobil pegasus horse. There was one mobil gas station that Still had a huge pegasus neon sign on top of the building but zoning laws made them take it down. Now it on a building in downtown Dallas.

Very cool article, and yeah retroguy78 mentioned about the VH1 logo and the changes it went through, I remember when it was a simple spelled out VH1 and the top of the V was basically corked off, and during Christmas they'd flip the V over and it looked like a tree.

You should have added Cartoon Network's "CN" and "Checkerboard" logo.

Very astute observations of the changes in logos. A few logos that I know that have gone through very significant changes in design throughout the years are the following:

-Pepsi, as well as some of their other product logos

    -VH1

    -MTV 2

    -Fox Channel

    -A&W

Man do I love old logos! ^_^

One of my favorites was the old logo for Universal Studios, because it had that neon lights kind of look to it as opposed to the traditional globe that they use now.
