1993 in Review

A look at 1993...

April 16, 2008
1993 was a good year of technological advancements, and Bill Clinton became president this year. Remaining bits of the 80's were erased by the end of the year and the 1990s feel was becoming concrete. I also really like 1993 because I was born in this year, so I have some good sentiments towards it. Personally, it's my favorite year of the 1990s, and I'm proud to be born in it.

Politics in 1993

Bill Clinton succeeds George H. W. Bush as president, and the World Trade Center is bombed by terrorists on the day I was born. The ATF carries an unsuccessful seige on a cult compound in Waco, killing many innocent people. The Somali War took place in this year.

Music in 1993

1993 was the peak of grunge. Grungers and their culture were being exploited by the media, and Kurt Cobain was now world-famous, though this was not necessarily healthy for Cobain. Hip-hop and pop music remain slightly popular into mid-1993. The New Kids on the Block break up, and the Smashing Pumpkins become recognized artists with their second album, "Siamese Dream". Billy Joel releases his final album, "River of Dreams".

Bell Biv DeVoe

One event in this year deeply tarnished the respect and reputation of the international superstar, Michael Jackson. Jordan Chandler accused him of molesting him in his Neverland Ranch. It stirred up very much controversy, and though Jackson is still very famous and continues to write music, he is nowhere near as popular as he was before 1993.

Television in 1993

Many great new shows were made in 1993. The popular sitcom, "Boy Meets World", and "Walker, Texas Ranger" hit airwaves. "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" replaces "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" as the most popular children's action-oriented series, and "Cheers" airs its final episode. The popular cartoon, "Beavis and Butt-Head", featuring the antics of two mentally-challenged metalheads starts airing. Here's a list of popular 1993 shows:

Biker Mice from Mars
Boy Meets World
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Super-Man
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers
Rocko's Modern Life

"Jurassic Park" was the most famous movie of this year, utilizing the most realistic CGI effects ever at the time. Video Games in 1993

1993 was a great year for video games. Nintendo invents the Super-FX chip, which enhances the capabilities of its Super NES games. The first game to use the chip is "Star Fox", which was the first Super NES game to display 3D polygonal graphics. Nintendo re-releases the original Mario series onto the Super NES as "Super Mario All-Stars". Namco releases the first texture-mapped polygon 3D racing game into arcades, "Ridge Racer", the most realistic video game ever at the time. Street Fighter II is succeeded by an enhanced arcade sequel, "Super Street Fighter II", which introduces new levels and characters. Early 32-bit systems try to make their way into the market, such as the 3DO, Atari Jaguar, and the Amiga CD-32. Unfortunately, all three of these consoles fail, especially the CD-32, which was discontinued after one year. ID Software, the creator of "Commander Keen" and "Wolfenstein-3D" releases "DOOM", the extremely popular, violent, and controversial 1st-person 3D shooter. NEC discontinues the TurboGrafix-16 and TurboDuo systems in the United States in late 1993.
