Top 100 80's Movies!

You voted for your favorites, now here are the results!

The people have spoken. I asked you what your favorite movies from the 80's were. You gave me big lists, and I had a hard time putting it all together. #1 - The Goonies (1985)

Well, there you have it. That is the official list of Top 100 80's movies that you guys all helped me put together. Some of you might wonder about a movie or two that got left off, but don't worry, I'm sure that one is listed in the honorable mentions. I would have listed the honorable mentions (movies that were nominated but didn't make the list), but that would just make the article too long, boring and repetitive (not that it's long enough already). I know that a lot of you are getting sick of all these list articles (namely velcrohead), and I know it may not look like it's very constructive, but I was elected to do this, and I did it. For those of you who enjoy these list articles, I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope it turned out good.

Oh, and just so you'd know, these are not my Top 100. I didn't choose all these and put them in my deceding order, and I also didn't just randomly pick all these movies. These are listed in order based on the nominated 80's movies I got from some of you fellow Retrojunkies (which I thank, of course, for your participation as well as your generosity and support), and they are listed by popularity and number of votes.

Alright, I'm gonna take a break for a while, but I assure you that my next couple of articles are going to be worth reading!

I love Mannequin! It's definitely in my top 5 80s movies, Labyrinth too.
I've never seen The Goonies though. The trailers never interested me.
srx Posted 1 month 15 days ago
I have to say I totally support this list!Maybe some hit movies are missing but this has to be the best 80s list i have seen so far (on the internet) ... man i have to see goonies again :D (after some 20 years)
shobhit Bhatnagar Posted 3 months 26 days ago
They can place a fucking piece of garbage like "First Blood" but not "Gandhi" which is one of the greatest biographic drama movies that i have ever seen. How could a first blood over Gandhi The story of first blood is fucking rubbish. There is no plot .A post Vietnam warrior came to meet his friend but he is arrested by a arrogant cop Then he escape from the jail and ran away to the jungle the whole fucking movie is about the encounter between him and cops is that what you called a great movie but the Gandhi is a great screenplay and direction which won 8 oscar awards and excellent plot which reveal the whole biography of "Mahatma Gandhi"that how could he through out of the 1st class train in South Africa, then came to India and began a revolution How could a commercial piece of shit like "John Rambo " over this masterpiece. i have seen many 80s list "Gandhi ' is overlooked by the critics . i think critics are trying to prove themselves smarter than AMPAS and BAFTA but they are not
    jrobson1970 Posted 3 months 27 days ago
    I mean 43 even worse.
    jrobson1970 Posted 3 months 27 days ago
I am shocked that The Breakfast Club comes in at number 42. Great list though thanks for putting it together. I see some movies I have never seen.
    manussa83 Posted 1 year 9 months ago
HOW THE HELL CAN DIRTY DANCING BE NOT ON THIS LIST?? That was a HUGE hit for the 80's. Also, Fast times at Ridgemont High. Stand by me also!!!
    sweetpea070406 Posted 7 months 28 days ago
I like the list all of the movies are pretty much where they should be, expecially the goonies..it's the best. there are a few that I don't agree with but oh well. the only complaint that I have is that PORKY'S didn,t even make the list. that is super crazy to me. I love that movie.
    fragglerocker1020 Posted 3 years 5 months ago
Umm, so you think Roger Rabbit is overrated yet you put it at number four. Wow...just wow
    PostalDude96 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
UHF and Full Metal Jacket are two of my all time favorites. I'm also a big fan of all the John Hughes movies you have listed(with the exception of Sixteen Candles). Red Dawn is probably the most violent PG-13 rated movie of all time. THUMBS UP!!!
gaijinninja Posted 4 years 1 month ago
THIS is the most pointless article I've ever 'read' here.
    riddle84 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Also, you should've had Trading Places on the list as well as Superman II. "Come to me, Superman! I defy you! Come and kneel before Zod! Zod!" "General, would you care to step outside?" I watched that movie so many times growing up and it was how I was first introduced to Superman, the granddaddy of all superheroes.
    riddle84 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Sweet Jesus! My favorite movie actually made it to #1! Whoo-hoo! Eat that, E.T.! I agree totally with pluto63116 when he says that movies were made right back in the 80s. Movies today lack a certain magic that they used to have back in the 80s.
    pluto63116 Posted 5 years 7 days ago
The 80's was when movies were made right.... as far as I am concerned.
Lizardbitch Posted 5 years 1 month ago
W0W! I love allot of those! ^_^ The goonies, breakfast club, 16 candles, back to the future, gremlins, american werewolf in london!!!
    great article!!!
    YoJoe83 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
"Also, just so you guys won't complain like little kids, I'm going to include pictures."

Well don't strain your fucking self, you've already done so much for us already...
    YoJoe83 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
WOOH! I own 35 of the movies on that list. and then some. Not too bad, not too bad.
    Arcee23 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I don't mean to complain but I was wondering why Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom on there but no Last Crusade?, The Last Crusade is way better than Temple of Doom, I'd say Temple of Doom is the worst of the three.
nintendonerd Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Of all of those movies I have like 15 at home.
    Who framed Roger Rabbit
    E.T
    Friday the 13th
    The goonies
    Beetlejuice
    Three amigos
    Christmas vacation
    Sixteen candles
    Rocky 3
    Gremlins
    Karate kid
    Pee wee
    Back to the future
    Ferris Buellers day off
    Muppets take manhattan
    Airplane
    Airplane the sequel
    The breakfest club

KARATE KID!!! TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE.

    youngers. (smh)
KittenFangs Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Roger Rabbit higher than Ghostbusters? Really?
Knites Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Aside from the pics, this virtual video store add, not to mention poor excuse for an article, couldn't be in the forums, why? Sad, sad, sad.
CeciliaFett Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Yeah, its not exactly the most accurate, considering how most of us are rather displeased, and are scratching our heads from the confusion of finding this mystery thread. What if the TV ratings people only looked at what five people watched versus all of America (which, according to my dad, is what they apparently did in the old days. He still doesn't belive me when I tell him its been digital for years....)? That'd hardly constitute what all of Americans watch.
NHRIJohn Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I can't fathom that Spaceballs and The Last Starfighter didn't make it in here. Also, I would have put Star Wars on there as well because it came out on VHS during the 80s and made my life 46 times better.
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 1 month ago
That doesn't seem like a very fair poll, then. You should have called this "The Top 100 80s Movies According to Five Members of RetroJunk". Also, I'm on the forums all the time and I didn't even see the thread. Are you sure you posted it in the right section?
CeciliaFett Posted 5 years 1 month ago
You mean people actually like The Wizard? That 90 minute boring and poorly written Nintendo commercial???

If people like The Wizard more then Super Mario Bros. I'm going to TURN EMO!!!111ONE*

*Not really. But still pretty dissapointed.
    SuperK1979 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    Fast Times at Ridgemont High?????????
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
You guys all had your chance. I announced this in the forums weeks ago. Only like four or five people sent in any nominations, but luckily, they all sent me huge lists.
    Xe-A-Thoul Posted 5 years 1 month ago
So wait... nobody agrees with me about Fred Savage's 'The Wizard?' Huh! I guess that movie wasn't as well liked as I thought.
    seven03 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
The karate kid should of been at least in the the top 20 not #100.

besides that i love the list.

    great job!
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I can't believe Aliens didn't rank higher! That's like, the quintessential 80s sci-fi action flick! I'm also surprised that Poltergeist came in at #2. I love that movie, but nobody else seems to like it, so I wouldn't have expected it to rank so high.

One detail I wish you'd have included was how many votes each movie got. Also, how did you conduct this poll, anyway? Were people allowed to only vote for one movie? Were people allowed to vote more than once?
KurtmanJP Posted 5 years 1 month ago
A few good movies are missing here:
    -Plague Dogs
-The Wizard Of Speed And Time
    -Scared Stiff AKA Masterson Curse

    Breakfast Club rules, though!
    the-micro-man Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Why does the poster for "Tron" look suspiciously similar to the poster for the first Star Wars movie?
pokinsmot Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    hey "moran"! its "moron"!
    Mavrick_45 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    Empire > Jedi

    get it right you morans
    ozma76 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
this is a cool list! who gives a damn about the particular order?
pokinsmot Posted 5 years 1 month ago
cool list! i dont agree w/ everything, but its a democratic thing! i didnt know it was goin on or i wouldve voted! :( dont listen to all the nay-sayers, good stuff...
    grifter78 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    Very good list!
tommygemini Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I just joined. Your time on this has to be appreciated. I wish I would have joined sooner. This list is about 75% "correct." I've seen all of these movies except about 10. I seen about 15 movies off the top of my head that shouldnt be on the list. Sixteen Candles and maybe Spaceballs missing is def messed up. But, am I the ONLY one furious that The Monster Squad didn't make it?!?! Please tell me I just keep over looking it.
    jango52577 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
The above comment is mine. I don't know what happened.~Jango52577
CeciliaFett Posted 5 years 1 month ago
MtLaStella, I agree with you there too. Spaceballs is one of the funniest parodys I've ever seen. How it, along with An American Tail, could not be listed just boggles my mind.
Dosmosis Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Great list! True.. alot of movies were left out, and I think you might as well have listed the honorable mentions...
but Good job... 100 is no joke, and tons of these evoke childhood memories.
    CharlesxBronson85 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Awesome list, but The Breakfast Club was 43? Behind UHF, seriously... That isn't right, and The Money Pit ranked way higher than the Burbs. Also no Stand By Me or Pretty in Pink. Great list, but nowhere near how mine would look if I did the same thing.
Lastdaysofrain Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Real Genius and REvenge of the Nerds aren't even ON this list? List has no merit to me.
    videos4ever Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    Where's "Child's Play"!
thabz Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Nice list, just wished Police Academy was on it.
MtLaStella Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Do my eyes deceive me or is "Spaceballs" (probably the best movie from the 1980's excluding "The Goonies";) not included on this list?

And who voted for these anyway?
arianit Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I think this is the longest article in retro junk
    And its cool
    git_out_of_ur_box Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Not a complainer here. Besides its a list of 100 movies that appears to have been picked by the youngest demographic that makes up this site.
Not much real thought put into the list IMO. I'll find 3 examples now.

    #90 - Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdrome (1985)
    #81 - Airplane 2: The Sequel (1982)
#76 - Amazon Women on the Moon (1987)
    #56 - The Chipmunk Adventure (1987)
    #52 - Transformers: The Movie (1986)
    #23 - The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
    #15 - The Little Mermaid (1989)

oops sorry, that appears to be 7.
I even like the Chipmunks, Transformers, and the Muppets.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I admit, I have some personal favorites that didn't make this list either.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    I'm not annoyed by lists!

And for all you complainers about this list: You could have given me your favorites when you had the chance.
CeciliaFett Posted 5 years 1 month ago
The Chipmunk Adventure is on this list but not An American Tail. THE. CHIPMUNK. ADVENTURE. I tried watching it recently and it was 90 minutes of agony my GOD the voices are annoying. And theres barely a story. Versus An American Tail. A heartfelt story. No squeaky voices. And lots of HEART.

Also you listed A Christmas Story wtf that movie only belongs on a top 100 suck list. Its two hours of the kid bitching for a BB Gun to the point were you wanna smack him repeatitly because by that point you feel he doesn't DESERVE it and he gets it anyways. And you watch it over and over again for another 22 hours what the hell.

And for someone who is annoyed of lists, you sure do make a lot of them. T_T
mofu Posted 5 years 1 month ago
85% of the movies i agree should be in the top 100 - but the order is mixed up completely!
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I know I'm already a bit biased, but Karate Kid.....100!?!?! You lost me on the very first one.
Such a shame. You almost saved yourself with Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. But not enough. No Wall Street? Come ON! Gekko IS the 80's. Take out Popeye(which is awful) and put in Rocky IV. Move up Aliens and Scarface....a lot. Take out Silver Bullet and put in either Teen Wolf (cheesy but fun) or Akira. Move down The Money Pit, but keep it in the the top 50. Where's Porky's and Bachelor Party? Replace Mannequin with Weekend at Bernie's, and for please oh please move down Labyrinth. That ruined the top 10 by itself.
That's all I got. (sorry, I really like 80s movies)
sonmanic Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    BEST LIST EVER
cybersix Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Seriously, another list? Even if you had a ton of movies I liked on here I was sort of hoping you'd write something that wasn't a list. Specially an interactive list.

But kudos for putting it together at least, by number eighty I would have given up on the listing bit.
vintagefantasy Posted 5 years 1 month ago
where do you get the tally from?
    crimsoneyes419 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Mommie Dearest is up there. Wow. I'm glad there were others who enjoyed that movie as much as I did.
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Could of explained a little about the movies for the people who haven't seen these movies.
LivelyLorikeet Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I'm glad Clue made it onto this list--I love that movie. And The Secret of NIMH, too.
    SleepawayCamper13 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
no lost boys and childs play :(
    oh well
    Xe-A-Thoul Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Where's "The Wizard?" You'd think that that cult movie'd be on 'dis list.
    git_out_of_ur_box Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Opps, sorry Heathers was on there.
ProphetSword Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Who voted for "The Great Outdoors" and "Mannequin" more times than "Aliens?"

"Return of the Jedi" is rated higher than "The Empire Strikes Back?"

And how is it that "The Road Warrior" didn't make the list, but "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" is sitting up there?

Wow. I have a hard time believing this list.
    Gundam_Warrior Posted 5 years 1 month ago
No Monster Squad = BOGUS! Plus no John Carpenter's version of The Thing or David Cronenberg's The Fly!

And also no Splash. Madison a million times the better mermaid over the ditsy Disney Princess Ariel.

    Other films missing -
    Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Akira
    Conan The Barbarian
    Planes, Trains and Automobiles
    Pumpkinhead
    The Abyss
    The Evil Dead
Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn
    Heavy Metal
    Rock & Rule
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
    Laputa: Castle in the Sky
    The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
    Escape from New York
And I'm probably missing some more too.

However while I don't agree 100% with this list (order and movies that should be in) it truly shows you the abundance of good quality and variety of films released in this decade.
rowemedic Posted 5 years 1 month ago
i thank you for doin it but i kinda disagree with some of the order of the flicks but hey i did not vote so can't complain. thx for all the work.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Where's Pretty in Pink? In the honorable mentions!
    laughinggas1801 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    where's Pretty in Pink?
    Evil_Iron Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I have seen 70 of them,
    They are really good.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
SquidMan: It's not my fault! More people voted for The Goonies then any other 80's movie.
    SquidMan93 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I can't believe you put The Goonies ahead of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Die Hard, The Empire Strikes Back and especially Back to the Future. >:(
    90sGuy Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Just to correct a few of the years you have wrong

"The Terminator" is from 1984, not 1982

"Die Hard" is from 1988, not 1987
davidyck Posted 5 years 1 month ago
great list, though i wish you wrote a summary of each flick, but that would have made the list even longer, so i guess its ok as it is.
    git_out_of_ur_box Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    well done!
not exactly my top 100 list of 80's movies but I enjoyed all of the pictures. There are a few on that list I have never seen. A few exclusions IMO
