Super Smash Bros. was released on April 26, 1999. The game had a total of 12 characters. Mario, Luigi, Link, Fox, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Kirby, Samus, Ness, Captain Falcon, Donkey Kong and Yoshi. The game had mostly positive reviews, most of them going to multiplayer. Single player mode got mixed reviews because of difficulty and little features. The game became a Players Choice.

2 years later on December 3, 2001, Super Smash Bros. Melee was released. The Game had much more features and characters. New Characters were Bowser, Dr. Mario, Falco, Peach, Ganondorf, Ice Climbers, Marth, Roy, Mewtwo, Mr. Game and Watch, Pichu, Zelda/Shiek and Young Link. It was a huge improvment from the original and was recieved very well. It was the Gamecubes highest selling game and it has sold over 7 million copies as of March 10, 2008.

7 years later, the 3rd instalment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was released. It added even more characters and removed 5. New characters were Diddy Kong, Ike, King DeDeDe, Lucario, Lucas, Meta Knight, Olimar and his Pikmin, Pit, Pokémon Trainer, R.O.B, Snake, Sonic, Toon Link, Wario, Wolf and Zero Suit Samus. The 5 characters that were removed were Dr. Mario, Roy, Mewtwo, Young Link (pretty much the same as Toon Link) and Pichu. This is the first game in the Super Smash Bros. Series to have Third party characters (Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Sonic). Sonic was the most wanted 3rd party character. This was the fastest selling game in the history of Nintendo of America. It sold 1.4 million copies in less than a week in North America. This game had a story line unlike the first 2. It also had stickers and Masterpieces which allowed you to play short demos of popular Nintendo games.

This has been a short look back on one of the most popular game series ever created.
