Mad Scientist

This is an essay on the Mad Scientist toy line.

In 1987 a new toy line was released by Matel. The name of the revolutionary toyline was Mad Scientist. It was advertised as being too gross which blew away my 5 year old mind. This toy line was very short lived. It only lasted two series and a possible third one. The toys were inventive and somewhat intelligent. If you research the actual slime or glop you find that there is a lot of chemistry involved in the design, but that is another article. I personally loved the toys and really wanted them very bad as a child. I never had them. I was banned from slime toys thanks to Hordak and his slime pit. I knew that my parents were not going to buy me one but I still always begged for them. The box had a picture of a crazy haired mad scientist in a white lab coat and glasses. The toy took children on a scientific journey that had many disgusting adventures.

The first toy in the series was the Mad Scientist Monster Lab set which you would dip a skeleton in a substance to grow skin and then you would dip the skeleton into another substance to remove the skin and see the skeleton again.

There were some other toys in the first series like the alien blood kits and the monster flesh kits. There were also living ice kits as well. The Alien Blood Kit came with a alien that you would fill with slime and squeeze. The creature would then bleed out the blood through its nose or wherever. The Living Ice Kits would come with a mold to make a creature and you would pour the living ice into the mold and make a monster. You could then break the monster and remold him. The Monster Flesh came with a mold and some monster flesh. You just made monsters. Each of these came out with a comic book that was included in the box. There were 3 of each kind.

Also in the first series was Mad Scientist Dissect an Alien Kit. It was probably the grossest of the series. You were given 12 organs, slime, an alien cadaver, a scalpel stitches, and a mat. You would load the body with the organs and slime. You would then use the scalpel to open him and remove the organs. After you were done you could then stitch him back up and do it again.

[

The final toy in series one was the Mad Scientist Glowing Glop. It came with living ice, powered light, instant glop, and a beaker. You would mix the contents in the beaker and you would have glow in the dark slime. The toy does not sound very exciting but you get to play with slime. That was enough for any kid.

The second series saw the toy line squeak out a few more toys. The Mad Scientist Splatters was a toy that came with plasma energy and plasma gel that you filled a bug body with. You would then crush the creature squeezing out the hard work of gut stuffing you just got done with. The toy has a large gross appeal but seems that it would soon lose it enjoyment.

The other toy made in series two was the Eyeball Maker Kit. You made eyeballs that you could then launch into a set of teeth to destroy.

Also in series two there were watches, a board game, a dress up kit, and bendable figures. There were also some refill packs that were available as well.

The toys did not last long probably because once the grossness lost its appeal the toy did as well. You can only make you sister scream so many times before she quits. There is only a few gross outs for moms before they do not care anymore. These toys were cool for the time but have since been forgotten. I hope this brings back some memories for all you retrojunkers.

*There was a discrepancy in the actual year of release. One source said 1987 and another said 1986. I could not find a definitive answer so I went with 1987. I just wanted to warn you.

** There is a questionable 3rd series of toys but they might not have been released. I did not include them because of the question.

Wasn't there one set where you can make a purple drink that tasted something like Tylenol?... Or was that just some knock-off I'm confusing this with?

    I remember these!

Nice article, in my country, i think it hasn't been comercialized, but it was a great memorie, i remember my cousin from US coming to my house on vacation with mad scientist toys =)

I've never heard of these but they sound pretty cool, I had something simalar called Dr Dreadful's food lab or something like that, you could make stuff like monster brains and zombie skin, which were actually quite tasty. I would have loved this toy line because I always loved gross out toys (quite unusual for a girl I guess)

Holy crap you jogged a memory. I definitely had one of these, I think it always made a mess and it was kind of gross too. I think I had that one that looks like a blender up near the beginning of the article.

Man I had the the Dissect-An-Alien kit and just found the alien toy. I had no idea what it was and thanks to the forum was able to figure it out! Great article it was a nice read! They sure don't make toy kits like this anymore!

Cool article, I don't think I ever had this, but I had fond memories of Doctor Dreadful.

I had the monster flesh set as well as the living ice set. Honestly if you actually played with this stuff, instead of just reporting on what it looked like and descriptions that you could find on the back of the box, you'd have had an awesome article about something I've completely forgotten about. But as soon as I saw that monster flesh play set...wow, memories kept coming back...

The monster flesh had this bizarre scent that was either totally repulsive or almost yummy depending on your mood and when you put it into the dissolving solution it made an even stranger smell. Of course any burgeoning mad scientist couldn't just let the stuff fall off the skeleton, no, a real mad scientist had to then touch the melting flesh and really gross everyone out.

The living ice i recall having a pretty weird scent as well, but once formed into a monster was basically no different than any squishy rubbery toy you might have had as a kid.

I also remember the refill kits being nearly impossible to find, so once you melted three or four monsters, you'd probably have to ditch the toy.

Anyways, I have to agree with velcrohead, you did leave me wanting more, but, for me, you managed to bring back a slew of memories I had long forgotten.

Never had any, but I wanted the dissect an alien kit.
HarryReems Posted 5 years 1 month ago
This is the best article on this site.
I always wanted all that stuff too, but never got it. Anything with slime, my folks knew not to get me. Ghostbusters, Turtles, and Hordak taught them that.

    another complaint from VELCROHEAD
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    Dr. Dreadful was better.
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Whoa! My brother had that! It was disgusting.
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I just looked for it on Wikipedia and evidently it was a 1988 direct-to-video cartoon with two 15-minute episodes that "was made to showcase the MAD SCIENTIST toy line by Mattel Toys". So there you have it, rowemedic, more info.
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I remember there being a cartoon that had the same character from this toyline. As for which one is based off of the other, you got me. However, I recall seeing the commercial on one of my Ninja Turtle VHS's as a kid and thinking, "What the heck is that? Is that even on TV?"

    Nice article dude
velcrohead Posted 5 years 1 month ago
One article right after another, and just as with your "Willow" article, I was left wanting more.

Y'know, it's all good to throw up a bunch of pictures. But I want some information with this stuff, and I'd really like to hear your experiences. (Not that you had any, since your parents wouldn't let you have the stuff.) But I mean, seriously... you've got the skeleton of a good article here, but it's not got any meat on the bones! If I were you, I'd stop trying to crank out articles rapidly, and focus more on developing your concepts. This article has potential, but I'm afraid it falls rather short.

Pretty cool stuff. Reminds me of Dr. Dreadful's Edible Lab from the 90's You made all this gross stuff and then you could eat it. It was basically a kit for making fruit snacks but it was the whole concept that was novel.
    Score:
