Video Games on the BIG SCREEN!

Some of them did, but what's still to come?

Children of the 80's, children of the 90's, and children of today always believe that the best thing ever is video games. We love to play them, and we are in love with the characters, storylines, music, etc. But have you ever wondered what it's like to watch them on the big screen? There have been plenty of popular video game series' that got adapted into live-action movies. Most of them, however, flopped. Here are some (but not all) video-game-based movies:

Super Mario Bros.
One of the very first video-game-based movies I recall ever being made. When Mario fans heard about this movie, they all got so excited that they couldn't wait to go see it, but it turned out to be a major disappointment. This movie doesn't follow the story of the Mario brothers at all. There's all this gross and weird stuff going on, the characters don't look a thing like the Mario characters from the games or cartoons. Mario comes the closest, but what about Luigi (where's his moustache?), the goombas, Yoshi and King Koopa? And who the hell are these two guys named Iggy and Spike? Moreover, the movie's loaded with all these unfamiliar, uninspired actors; well, Dennis Hopper plays King Koopa, but that's about it. Why did this movie have to suck so bad? Well, it did come out in 1993, the same year "Ninja Turtles 3" did, so that may have something to do with it. Fans of the Angry Video Game Nerd have been begging him to review this movie, and I'm sure he'll do it in due time.

Double Dragon
Evil has just met its match. Okay, the Double Dragon movie is not quite as horrible as "Super Mario Bros.", but it got different responses. The plot outline seems to be similar to plot outlines of the games. At least this movie isn't like "Double Dragon 3", which had a bad storyline, spelling errors, pointless events and way too high of a difficulty.

Street Fighter
The Street Fighter movie is not one of my favorites. I'm sure a lot of Street Fighter fans will be very disappointed with this movie. The main thing that disappoints me about this movie is the lack of memorable characters. Ryu, Guile, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief and M. Bison are the only familiar characters that I caught. Most of the other characters are from the Street Fighter Alpha series like T. Hawk and Dhalism. There are too many scientists, news anchors and soldiers, and not enough Street Fighter characters. This movie also proves how much of an idiot Zangief is.

Mortal Kombat
The Mortal Kombat movie I consider to be an improvement over the Street Fighter movie. A lot of people think the Mortal Kombat movie was horrible and the sequel, "Mortal Kombat: Anihilation", was even worse. I beg to differ on the fact. I think the Mortal Kombat movie has a great storyline and a lot of memorable characters from the games. Sure there are some characters who didn't show in this movie, but this just opens a door for a sequel! Of course, when it comes to Mortal Kombat, the highlights are always the fight scenes. "Anihilation" has a plot that's a little harder to follow, but the good thing is, it introduced a lot more memorable characters from the games. Sure, there were some favorites of ours that got killed off, but it's still an okay movie. Now, for a long time, I've been hearing about a third movie coming out, "Mortal Kombat: Devistation". When I first checked, it was supposed to come out in 2005, but then it got moved to 2007, and all this time, I've been hearing no word about it. According to what IMDb says, it's now scheduled to come out in 2010. I don't know why they've been putting it off so much, but it seems the writers keep rewriting the script, actors are being removed, and all this other stuff has been happening. Why don't they just finish it already so that we can see it?

Final Fantasy
"Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" was released just as the "Final Fantasy" series was at peak popularity. Unfortunately, all I gotta say is that this movie sucks. It's nothing like any of the games, and with the plot and setting and all, I don't think this movie is even worthy of the name, "Final Fantasy". Aliens should not be a part of this franchise! I thought this was supposed to be "Final Fantasy", not "Stargate SG-1"! Is there anything good about this movie? Well, Ming-Na plays the lead character, so if you're a big fan of Mulan, then I guess this would give you something to look forward to.

Tomb Raider
Laura Croft is one of the coolest video game characters of all time. As far as the "Tomb Raider" movie goes, I don't really have much to say. I've been hearing a lot of talk about it when it was coming out. As far as feedback goes, I didn't really hear much except for negative bashing from fans of the franchise. And like most vg-based movies, it's loaded with uninspired actors.

Resident Evil
The Resident Evil movies are dark with lots of violence and horrifying scenes. However, these movies all got a lot of negative bashing, and since I'm not a fan of the "Resident Evil" games, I don't really feel inspired to watch any of them.

Doom
I've been waiting for a "Doom" movie since like...1997. I don't see how we can go wrong with this movie since The Rock is playing the lead character! Even though I knew it was probably going to suck, I still wanted to see it. As a result, "Doom" really did suck. At least we still got memories.

Those are just all the video-game based movies I recall being made. I checked online, and there are currently some upcoming movies that are still in the works. For one thing, there's going to be a "Castlevania" movie next year. I wonder how that'll turn out. Also, believe it or not, there is currently a "Halo" movie in the works. It will also be released next year, and Peter Jackson (of "Lord of the Rings" fame) will be producing it, so expect it to be really long.

Now, here is something I felt like doing for fun. This is a top 10 list I made of game franchises that I think should be made into movies:

#10 - Duke Nukem
Screwattack.com rated this guy as the coolest video game character of all time. I wouldn't mind seeing Duke Nukem in action on a movie and saying all his memorable catchphrases. So, if this were to happen, who would play the part? Well, let me think of popular action movie stars. Sylvester Stalone maybe...but then again, he may be too old. Arnold Schwarzenegger has quit acting and moved on to polotics, so it won't be him; besides, Duke wouldn't be the same if he had an Austrian accent. Peter Weller...nah, he doesn't have the good looks. The only guy I can think of right now who'd be good for the part is Vin Diesel. Yeah, Diesel could do well for the part.

#9 - Contra
If they're adapting Castlevania into a movie, I don't see why not Contra. It's one of the most popular games to ever be released on the NES, so I'm sure that kids who played the game would be psyched to go see this. I'm not sure how casting should go for this one, but I guess Steven Spielberg would be the best director for this one.

#8 - Kid Icarus
A lot of Nintendo fans recognize Pit, but some don't. But hey, if he's on "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", then I'm sure he's becoming a big sensation! If this were to get made into a movie, the only con I see is that the role of Pit would probably be played by Elijah Wood or Hayden Christensen, you know, some whiny kid actor that all the women hate.

#7 - Metroid
Oh, yeah! Metroid is such an awesome franchise, this has definately got to be made into a movie! Even though it'll probably suck, it'll still be awesome to see Samus Aran kick some alien butt on the big screen! The only actress I see playing the role of Samus is Bridgette Wilson. I know Peter Jackson is already making Halo, but he should make this one too.

#6 - Star Fox
If they're gonna make a Star Fox movie, it's gonna have to be based off of "Star Fox 64", and if possible, they should get the original voice actors to be the characters. Compared to the other Star Fox games, "64" is God. I know it wouldn't make much sense to have this be made into live action, so this is a movie that's gonna have to be CG.

#5 - Medievil
Now, this one is probably what makes this list different from everybody else's, because it's not a popular video game. In my opinion, "Medievil" is one of the best video games I've ever played. I think it'll be totally awesome if they made this into a movie, and if this were to happen, then I say that Tim Burton should direct it, and Danny Elfman should compose the music! If they can throw in Johnny Depp, the only character I can hear him doing the voice of is Canny Tim. And if possible, if they could somehow sneak in John Cleese, Michael Palin and Eric Idle as voice actors, that'd be pretty tight too.

#4 - Sonic the Hedgehog
I know what you're thinking. I know that there already was a "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie, but you see, that movie has been seen by very few people, mostly due to the fact that it was a direct-to-video release. Also, right now, we have a legion of young adults who grew up on Sonic, and I think they would really like to see him in action on the big screen! If this movie were to be made, it should be CG, and I think it should have a feel to it as if it were "Sonic Adventure". I know that "Sonic Adventure" isn't quite as awesome as the 2D side-scrolling Sonic games, but it's still pretty awesome, and I think that cast is the right cast for a movie like this!

#3 - Kirby
It may turn out to be a kiddy movie, but I'm sure plenty of fans of the Kirby games would like to see something like this! But if this movie were to be made, it should be based more off of the Kirby video games, and not that poorly-executed (yet forgivable) cartoon series! This one's probably going to end up being computer-animated as well, and I'd be cool with that...just as long as it's not made by the creators of "Veggie Tales".

#2 - Legend of Zelda
I'm sure the whole world will want to see this movie if it were to be made! There is surely no doubt that a live-action "Legend of Zelda" movie will kick ass for sure! Let's just hope it doesn't turn out like that short-lived cartoon series where Link keeps saying, "Well, excuuuuuuuuse me, princess!" or even worse, those games on the Phillips CD-i! Ah, forget what I said in the last sentence. If you think the Zelda games are really fun, then there's surely no doubt that you will be looking forward to a Zelda movie!

#1 - Mega Man
The number 1 video game character who I think should get his own movie is none other than the blue bomber himself, Mega Man! As far as acting or directing goes, I don't really know how it should go, but I don't really care, because either way, it's gonna be great! What I think would be even more awesome is if they made this a series of movies, and each one followed the plots of each game! It would really be something to see Mega Man in live-action. That's why Mega Man is #1 on my list!

Man, I must have way too much time on my hands! Well, I just provided you some vg-based movies from the past, of the future, and possible future releases. If you think this article sucks, I apologize, and I'll try to come up with something better next time. However, if you enjoyed it, I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Well, good night, everybody!

Star Fox would make a great movie and I actually have a voice actor list of main characters and who they were voiced by in the N64 game:
    Fox: Mike West
    Peppy: Isaac Marshall
    Slippy: Lyssa Browne
    Falco: Bill Johns
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
Also, about Legend of Zelda, I have a hard time picturing Link speaking.
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
Wow, I didn't know a lot of these movies even existed. I do remember my brother watching Mortal Kombat but that was a little too dark and scary for me. I'm unfamiliar with some of the franchises you listed to be made into movies, but Star Fox and Legend of Zelda sound f***ing awesome! Sonic Adventure is the best and likely only good 3D Sonic game (well, SA2 is pretty good too, but it has it's cons) but if they made a movie it would probably be centered around the crappy newer Sonic games...blech.
superkoopa Posted 4 years 2 days ago
I think there should be a punch-out movie, killer instinct movie, soul calibur movie or if you want to have some laughs they could make an Abe's Exoddus movie.
dg Posted 4 years 5 days ago
By the way I really love the Medievil game. I had loads of fun playing didnt get very far but it had nice charm to it. Not sure about it being made into a film but that's your opinion.
dg Posted 4 years 5 days ago
This is really good. You've got some choices in there that I forget about like Doom well done anyway.
TheOutlaw Posted 4 years 7 days ago
    I want a Metroid movie!
MBdigital Posted 4 years 1 month ago
A Kirby movie would be interesting. I once typed down an idea for a Kirby movie when I was 10, yet now today I'm embarrassed about sharing it with the web.
    starfox81 Posted 4 years 7 months ago
how bout the man chuck norris for duke and i wanta FZero movie
nathansboomstick Posted 4 years 9 months ago
They're are making a Legend of Zelda movie, I recall seeing a trailer for it on youtube.
    starfox81 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
i whoud love to see the starfox team on the big screen but if they do I whould hate to see it be kiddie looking i do belive cg whould be better then like action.i acctualy saw a pic on a starfox artical that looks good for a cg look ex.flaco featers look better looking then the one here
ganonwearsprada Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I'm sorry but I would have to disagree that Zelda should be made into a movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Zelda fanatic, but I feel that making it into a movie would ruin the over all nostalgia of the series. Link is a character who doesn't talk and it should stay that way. You never even get to read what he says so that adds to the level of emersion you gain when playing the games. I think voice acting through either games or movies would diminish the mysticism of the Hero of Time.
    SgtPeppers1987 Posted 5 years 11 days ago
Really great article! The only thing you need to work on is your tenses when you type, besides that this was an fantastic article!
    chadman50513 Posted 5 years 28 days ago
What about Mark Whalberg for Duke Nukem
    joecool85 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I definely agree, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" was a bad movie. The film has nothing to do the with the franchise, the characters were weak, the story drags too long and plot is simply another version of "Alien". But, at least the CGI itself was beautiful. It just could have be better.

"Mortal Kombat" was a huge success and I did enjoy it more than any other video game based movies. The sequel, however, was a complete dud but it had some moments.
    phenomenal1 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Heres what i think first for the sonic movie if ur gonna make a sonic movie PLEASE get Jaleel White to be sonic he did great on Sonic SatAm and Sonic Underground. For Duke Nukem i say let Jean Claude Van Damme play Duke Nukem he did excellent as guile on street fighter.
    Al_Boucher Posted 5 years 1 month ago
What about Jason Stathamfor Duke? I'm sure he could pull off an American accent....

Great article by the way. Loved it!
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
So, there is a Duke Nukem movie in the works? Okay, so maybe Vin Diesel won't work for the part, but the Rock? That's even better!
CeciliaFett Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Two sequels? Um, there are 10 movies that have been released thus far. Going by the American names (some of which aren't as interisting as their original titles) we have: Mewtwo Strikes Back, Power of One, Spell of the Unown, Celebi: Voice of the Forest, Pokemon Heroes: Latias and Latios, Jirachi-Wish Maker, Destiny Deoxys, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, and The Rise of Darkrai. Movie 11, Giratina and the Bouquet of the Sky-Shaymin is in works and will premire this July (American release date unknown). And thats not counting the Mewtwo new years special (Mewtwo Returns), the Pokemon Crystal special (Legend of Thunder), the 10th Anniversary special (The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon), ect. Pokemon has had loads of movie adventures as you can see. Some are really good (Mewtwo Strikes Back SUBBED, Destiny Deoxys, Latias and Latios), some not so good (Jirachi Wish Maker=STAY AWAY). AND the series has gotten better since 4Kids got the boot too. =3
    Timothy1964 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
What about Pokemon? Pokemon originated as a card and video game, then was made into a movie with two sequels.
    Ninjaturtles1600 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Good article, Most of the movies you mentioned did suck a lot. I think Mortal Kombat for me was so bad it was good kind of thing. I never bother to watch the sequel. Super Mario Bros is god awful I watched it on TV a long time ago and i remember really not liking it at all. The thing with Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, is people don't give it enough credit. I thought the animation was absolutely breath-taking and wayyy ahead of it's time. It's not always fluid, but it is worth seeing alone for that. The story is meh, but I actually enjoyed it. As for your upcoming movies, I think Metroid could be a pretty awesome movie if it's done right, which it's usually not, but it is possible. Zelda and maybe Starfox are the only ones I could really see happening as much as I love Sonic, I don't think a real movie would work.
    Phantasmagoria_3D Posted 5 years 1 month ago
This was an interesting read. I've also seen the majority of these videogame-based movies that you mentioned (except for "Doom";). I remember seeing "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" during the summer of 2001. I was also very disappointed that it didn't follow the games. Of course, "Street Fighter", "Double Dragon", and "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" were much worse. I thought "Super Mario Bros" and "Tomb Raider" were okay, though they could've been better. Anyway, great article! It was a lot of fun to read.
Nightwatcher Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Another great article dalmationlover. I would like to point out that there has been a Duke Nukem movie in development hell since 2001 and as far as I know The Rock (who is also a big fan of the franchise by the way) has been slated to fill Duke's mighty boots. "Come get some!". Also I would like to thank you for adding Sonic to your "v.g. movies wish list". I have also been waiting for a Sonic movie since Sonic Adventure came out so let's keep our fingers crossed. "Gotta juice!".
sutasafaia Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Very fun article to read, we even have most of the same ideas when it comes to movies we want to see made.

The only thing I would disagree on is Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. While I will agree that it was just a market ploy by throwing the Final Fantasy name onto it, I still don't think it was a bad movie. It was NOT a Final Fantasy movie, and I think it would have done better in theatre's if they had not stuck that name on there honestly. Trying to play the movie off as something it wasn't is what really killed it I think.
SimonTheGoaler Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Eh, most video game-based movies suck...it's a shame. Good article though.
    Viper134 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I don't think its fair calling final fantasy a bad movie. I've only played one of the final fantasy games and while its true the movie has nothing to do with final fantasy the movie itself without comparing it to the games was fun to watch besides the animation being fantastic.
CeciliaFett Posted 5 years 1 month ago
"As for a VG-to-movie, I hear there's an Animal Crossing movie in the works."

The Animal Crossing anime was made more then a year ago. But unfortunitly, except for fansubs, we won't see it cross this side of the Pacific. It broke even, but not by much. And its a less popular in the west. A shame because I thought the movie was really cute and accurate to the game.
    The_Batman Posted 5 years 1 month ago
cool aricle.. I have to agree Mario Bros was BAD, BUT i still enjoyed it, dont know why. Street Fighter wasnt a highlight and i heard theres a remake coming (?),Double Dragon was good but cant remember that much of it and Mortal Kombat was actually pretty good, but i didnt dig the sequel. As for the movies being made, I agree with Contra, Metroid (Its a shame this generation is to high on Halos nuts that it gets made into a movie b4 the orignal Alien shooter game). Zelda would be nice (if done by Peter Jackson, Orlando Bloom had a Link look to him in Lord of the Rings, maybe get him?) and maybe a Megaman film could work..

BUT the Game i wanne see made into a film is................................ Paperboy

j/k... i wanna see a Metal Gear Solid movie.. that would be sweet
havokric Posted 5 years 1 month ago
dalmatianlover.... i love your articles, but velcro has a point... we all want the articles spell checked, and paragrafs checked...(yeah on pourpos!)
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Why did you have to mention those terrible movies again, Dawg? We know he forgot them, we all have...for a reason. I hope nobody ever mentions them again. Maybe if we all close our eyes and pretend they never existed, maybe I can get some of that wasted time back. In fact, while Hollywood's at it, take back Son of Mask. Just thinking about it makes me cringe.
chokeslam Posted 5 years 1 month ago
There acutally was a Metroid movie in the works for a while but it ended up getting canned for some reason. Oh, maybe someone esle will pick up on the idea eventually.
velcrohead Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Dalmatian...people don't have to have any other reason for giving an article a thumbs down than the fact that this article isn't perfect. C'mon... you can do better than this. The path to greatness in writing isn't crying everytime someone rates you down or criticizes you. It's in taking those criticisms and making a better article NEXT time. You can do it.
    mariofan85 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Good article but by the way, Dhalsim in Street Fighter wasn't from the Alpha series and neither was T. Hawk, Dhalsim has been in it from the first SFII game and T. Hawk got in in Super Street Fighter II...not the Alpha series.

Personally, I think Vin Diesel would be a horrific choice for Duke Nukem, the only actor that could pull it off would be Bruce Campbell if he was really muscular, because he has the same bravado.

I was mortified to hear u even mention Vin Diesel's name for that part...Vin Diesel with blond hair??? Are you kidding me????

One last thing, run your documents through a spell checker before posting, I noticed a lot of errors. (pet peeve)
    tmnt93 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
zelda, starfox, sonic, metroid and megman would all b amazing as actual movies
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 1 month ago
So what the hell is going on now? Are you guys just going to keep giving this article thumbs downs just because of all this arguing I had back and forth with velcrohead?

And the reasons I'm mentioning movies I haven't seen is because I just wanted to list the ones I've heard of and wanted to try to avoid people getting mad at me for leaving them out.

BTW, someone in the above comments says that a Mega Man movie does exist. I saw nothing of the sort pop up anywhere on IMDb. If you're sure there is one, then prove it.
    YoJoe83 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    ooliyo - I knew

Samus Aran is my hero and ultimate video game fantasy girl.

She makes metroid go round, she makes the games what they are...

    great.

so how bout it man, what are YOUR personal opinions on some of these movies. Why even mention any you haven't seen? yeah, some of these might've gotten bad reviews, but some got good ones to, but it looks like you just gave them all bad and had nothing good to say about any of them, even Doom, and that was a fantastic movie! Aside from "The Rock's" shitty acting, I thought it was pretty entertaining, especially the last part (don't worry, no spoilers here)
ooliyo Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Didn't anyone know that John Woo had plans to direct "Metroid" but it was cancelled?

Videogamenerd Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Nice article it would be cool to have a zelda movie and the castlevania would be probably pretty good. I saw all the Resident Evil's they were ok. Medieval would do good as a movie same as Samus.

on Average the article was good.
    fragglerocker1020 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
I actually like the mario brothers movie. Okay how much more would you like them to do. What kinda story besides the one they did could you do about Plumbers saving the mushroom kingdom from a dinosaur. The story they had was decent and Hoskins fit Mario perfect. Dennis Hopper is great but not in this movie. Okay Mortal Kombat at least the first movie is as close as it can get to the game. There are fatalities and awesome action. The sequal was a bit to much for my taste but Christopher Lambert as Raiden you can't go wrong there. I thought Tomb Raider was cool as well. I hate when people go on a rant about how. This isn't closse to original lah dee fricking dah. The fact is look at X men the movie..What would you rather see..Hugh Jackmen in the costume he had or the the yellow and blue tights. People over analize things to much these days. I do agree staying true the original works is a must but sometimes things have to changed to make it into a movie.
goblyn Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Hey, Bob Hoskins is an award winning actor! Don't just dismiss the entire cast (save Dennis Hooper) without doing some research! Also, both Tomb Raider and Resident Evil both got pretty good reviews upon coming out, maybe not by the critics, but on places like IMDB.com they got strong fan reviews.

Anyways, other than that, its not terrible, I just wish you had done more research first.
Dawg Posted 5 years 1 month ago
You completely missed all the horrible Uwe Boll movies: Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark, Postal, House of the Dead (the WORST of the worst since they used footage of HotD 2 as part of the movie!!!), Far Cry...

...not to mention a few other video-game based movies that turned out to be crap.

HOWEVER, of the movies you did mention. Those are very biased on your opinion of bad. None of the movies you mentioned were good except MK. Doom had the potential, and some thing it lived up to it. Resident Evil also was fairly good as was Tomb Raider (all commercially successful films, which would have been nice to know the box-office take).

    spiralcord666 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    Hmmm....Bond22...November7! ^D^ I Hope They Make Bond 23...
thabz Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Nice article, the only VG-->Movie liked was Tomb Raider. As for making Sonic or Star Fox into a movie, I bet when the action starts I'm sure some us would yell out "Dude, Where's my Joy-Pad!"

As for Duke Nukem, I think Jason Statham would be perfect for role.
    silentbob12 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Hmm, the article was interesting, but it could have been written better, and if a little more research into the subject at hand.

Dalmatianlover did a decent job, it was very creative, however Velcrohead did point out many critiques on it, but both of you are acting childish. Velcrohead, there's critiquing, then there's being an asshole. Though your act was noble, you could've done it in a nicer, more polite manner. And Dalmatianlover, sometimes it doesn't hurt when someone leaves "constructive" criticism, but if it is true that you left a message of non-stop profanity, you really are no better.

    Dr.Phil moment over.
velcrohead Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Well, of course you agree, since this is your article. I'm sure. (I appreciate the profanity-laced private message, by the way.)

Question is this: if you're not gonna write a good article, why write one? It doesn't have to be "professional"--though I'm glad you reminded everyone in the forums that loads of people think you're the best author here--but can't it at least be well thought out? I thought I pointed out several valid points (and some glaring errors) so why not address them?
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 2 months ago
I agree with kelvmelv on this one, velcrohead. Get a freaking life, already! Not everybody's gonna write a professional article.
Forgotten sin Posted 5 years 2 months ago
you say that Dennis hopper was the only familiar actor? What about Mario? bob Hoskins, or to most people, Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
memoryman Posted 5 years 2 months ago
I saw the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and the Super Mario Bros. movies.
The Mario movie was nothing like the video game, but the Street Fighter
and the Mortal Kombat movies were far more accurate. One thing you forgot to mention was the girl that was kidnapped. She wasn't even a princess.
velcrohead Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Sure thing...as soon as people stop writing half-assed articles and learn how to spell properly...
kelvmelv Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Yeah, Dhalsim was in street fighter 2, I think he wasn't originally playable though and T.Hawk was part of super street fighter 2.
    And VELCROHEAD....
can you stop bitching about EVERY article. I liked this one dalmation lover, keep it up.
VELCROHEAD, get a life. its not that serious.
    doubledown11721 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Actually Dhalism was a part of the original Street Fighter series. Wasn't he?

Vin Diesel as Duke Nukem? That is probably the worst actor EVER to put into the role of the Duke. I mean seriously, he was sort of okay in XXX, but Chronicles of Riddick bombed. So nobody would want to go see him destroy a gaming icon on the big screen. If it had been made 8 or 9 years ago, I'd say Kurt Russell (who was pretty good as Snake in Escape from New York). But today, there's only a handful to choose from and believe it or not Vin Diesel is not one of them (the Rock should still be on the list for VG movies, but he already destroyed Doom, so scratch him for the Duke Nukem) No, I'm thinking that it should be someone in their late 30s/early 40s. They simply must have a personality that could be believably narcissistic and badass at the same time, which for me personally is NOT Vin Diesel.
As for Contra, that and Duke Nukem should be directed by the guys who did Sin City or 300. VG movies from now on must always use the blue screen technology.

What about alone in the dark and silent hill?

Actually scratch what I said about Sonic the Hedgehog being make into a live-action movie, it just won't do in that format, it should be CGI instead.

StarFox couldn't get made into a movie. I think there would be too many copyright infringements (though personally I'd like to see the Assault designs and characters. Sorry, but that game took every from 64 and improved it bunches). As for Kirby, well, 4Kids screwed up Hoshi no Kirby (Kirby of the Stars) rather badly. I recommend watching some episodes before they were dubbed. Its much better, trust me.

I don't get why everyone says the Mario movie is so bad. I think its pretty funny. But, well, you have to look at it in a unintentional comedy type of way, like with B-Movies and Made for TV movies.

btw the Sonic movie you're thinking of isn't a real movie. It was a two part anime OVA that was combined and called a movie for the US release.

I agree that the Angry Video Game Nerd should review the SMB movie. He did mention it in his Nintendo Power review saying that the movie was a big disapointment. Also The Legend of Zelda and Sonic the Hedgehog would make awesome live-action movies. They're both loved by many fans everywhere and they're still loved now.

damn, sonic the hedgehog starring in a movie? after all the crappy 3D games he's been in? no.... just no. but i agree, the game-based movies that have already been out suck donkey doo and they're as fun as watching mold grow on bread. final fantasy: the spirits within had me thinking it was gonna be good, but just like a movie version of final fantasy 7, it didn't make sense to me at all

Since the day the Saturday Morning Sonic cartoon debuted, Ive always thought that storyline would be the perfect structure for a feature film. In fact, one was planned back in 1998 by one of the writers of the show but was cancelled since Sega was revamping their game franchise and preparing for the big change with Sonic Adventure in 1999. Though I think CG is a bit overused these days and it sorda lost its wow factor years ago. Practically every movie thats based on a popular franchise has been bastardized into a CG crapfest which scares the companies these characters represent. I feel a 2D animated movie would be a breathe of fresh air, especially since its making a comeback. The upcoming Dragans Lair movie by Don Bluth is returning to his signature hand drawn style in 2010.

Hmmm, yeah many of the game-->movie are not that good. Super Mario is crap, Street fighter is..kind of crap,Final Fantasy..über crap (watch Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children insted, soo much better, it is candy for the mind and soul).
Tomb Rider was okay, the first movie, the second was crap.
Resident Evil 1-2 are okay i guess.
Doom had some moments, but was not that good.
Mortal Combat are kind of cool, atlest the first one and the second is alright ^^

Yeah Duke would be sweet to see and you are saying that Halo and Castlevania are coming? That will be intresting to see ^^
And there is a Sonic movie? Live action or cartoon?

Yeha Mega Man and Zelda would be cool to see and Duke also ^^
But Mega Man muts be a anime to work i think and Zelda..Hmm that does dipend on what game there going to make a movie on ;)

    Great article

Way too long of an article. And it managed to just be a list at the end of the day. Wonder how many articles like it that we've seen around here?

"Children of the 80's, children of the 90's, and children of today always believe that the best thing ever is video games. We love to play them, and we are in love with the characters, storylines, music, etc"...

Not only is the first sentence grammatically incorrect, but it's also a sweeping generalization (also known as a "logical fallacy.";) I'm a child of the 80's, and I always thought the best thing ever was Transformers. My cousin thought the best thing ever was a BB gun. You need to rethink lines like these.

"Well, it (SMB) did come out in 1993, the same year "Ninja Turtles 3" did, so that may have something to do with it..." WHAT? The fact that it came out in a certain year makes it bad??? And what did Ninja Turtles have to do with the making of a Mario movie???

    Double Dragon
Evil has just met its match. Okay, the Double Dragon movie is not quite as horrible as "Super Mario Bros.", but it got different responses. The plot outline seems to be similar to plot outlines of the games. At least this movie isn't like "Double Dragon 3", which had a bad storyline, spelling errors, pointless events and way too high of a difficulty.

"Ryu, Guile, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief and M. Bison are the only familiar characters that I caught. Most of the other characters are from the Street Fighter Alpha series like T. Hawk and Dhalism"... T. Hawk and Dhalsim are not from SFA. Dhalsim (not DhalISM) was in the original SF2 game. T. Hawk was added in Super SF2.

And comparing FF: Spirits Within with Mulan, just because Ming-Na Wen voiced the lead??? Why not compare it with Street Fighter, since she was in that too!

It's spelled LARA Croft. You said you've been hearing a lot of talk about when it was coming out. I'm sure you know that it has already been released, as well as a sequel. And if you've seen neither, then why comment about it one way or the other? And I thought Angelina was quite an inspired Lara. Just my opinion though. I just don't get why you're quoting second hand reviews of the movie.

And why include Resident Evil? Just like Tomb Raider, you've never seen them, so why just pass on the negative reviews?

So what was this list for... just letting us all know what movies had been made? Did you really take any initiative to actually view most of them? Why not elaborate and tell us why you thought the movie failed (since you didn't enjoy any of them apparently)? One sentence blurbs aren't enough.

Then, it seems, since the rest of the article wasn't going well, it appears you abandoned it mid-stream to go into (yet another) top 10 list. Let me tell you why I disagree with your top 10 list:

#10 - Duke Nukem--See above "Doom." As for catchphrases, please see "Batman & Robin." (BTW, it's "politics.";)

#9 - Contra -- See every war movie ever made.

#8 - Kid Icarus -- cast with Hayden Christensen is FAIL waiting to happen.

#7 - Metroid -- Have you seen Bridgette Wilson-Sampras lately?

#6 - Star Fox -- If they used the original voice actors, wouldn't they just say gibberish? No. Just no.

#5 - Medievil--don't really have an opinion one way or the other, and I'm thinking that's what Hollywood execs would think to.

    #4 - Sonic the Hedgehog--dear God, no.

    #3 - Kirby - See #3

#2 - Legend of Zelda -- I'd actually go see this.

#1 - Mega Man -- The only reason I object to this is that I can't see any way that a movie studio wouldn't completely screw it up.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Next time, rather than just cranking out (what it is, article number 47 now?) maybe you should put a bit more time and development in.

Kid Icarus, Kirby, & Star Fox i think would be extremly bad adaptations to the big screen! now Mega Man, Duke Nukem, & Contra on the other hand if done right would be good.. al though im not sure i aggree with you on the whole Vin Desile playing Duke Nukem. On the Other hand Medievil
, & Sonic would be good not great Kids Stright to dvd release!

Rather than live action movies, I'd like to see animated series/anime of some of those games, like Megaman or Zelda. I personally just don't think live action would work for those two.
zilly Posted 5 years 2 months ago
I had no idea they made a mario movie, I have to check that out sometime. Im sure its dumb but i still gotta see it now
