Sidekicks in the VG World

The Top 10 Video Game Sidekicks!

Yeah, there are tons of people who get enjoyment out of playing video games. Everyone has their favorite games, and everyone has their favorite characters. Whether it's the hero or the villain, there's always something about them that makes you love them, but what about the trusty sidekicks? Sure they may not be as cool as the heroes themselves, but they've got plenty of good points too. In most cases, the sidekicks are usually the most underappreciated characters in the games, but I see a lot of good points in these sidekicks.

So, here we go: My list of the Top 10 Video Game Sidekicks!

#10- Sparx
Sidekick of: Spyro the Dragon
Debut Game: Spyro the Dragon (PS1, 1998)
Claim to Fame: He's been helping and protecting Spyro since the late 90's. He didn't do much other than work as a health bar to him and collect items for him whenever they're nearby, but what else can be cooler than a dragonfly that sparkles? Always remember, in order to keep Sparx all bright and sparkly, feed him lots of butterflies.

#9- Snot
Sidekick of: Earthworm Jim
Debut Game: Earthworm Jim (SG, 1994)
Claim to Fame: He may have only been in a couple games, but Earthworm Jim still had it all. So who's his sidekick? Well, you know that giant booger thing living in his backpack? Well, he helped Jim cross gaps, make happy landings by acting as a parachute, and win bungee-jumping contests with the evil Major Mucus. While Peter Puppy may have been his sidekick in the cartoon series, as far as video games go, Snot is the one who helped him a lot more.

#8- Blank
Sidekick of: Zidane
Debut Game: Final Fantasy IX (PS1, 2000)
Claim to Fame: Final Fantasy IX is such a big game, the designers had to put it on four discs! At the start of the game, the main character, Zidane, had three starting sidekicks, and of those three, the coolest one was Blank. He's got hair, weapons, attitude, and even a sense of humor. You may not see him often in the game, but he's still a cool character. You gotta admit, he is.

#7- Kazooie
Sidekick of: Banjo
Debut Game: Banjo-Kazooie (N64, 1998)
Claim to Fame: This next one on the list happens to be another backpack-based sidekick. After making his debut on "Diddy Kong Racing", Banjo's spin-off game introduced his trusty companion, Kazooie. This bird does pretty much everything you'd want her to do. She can fly, float, peck, jump really high, and even carry Banjo on her back. Man, she is one tough bird!

#6- Diddy Kong
Sidekick of: Donkey Kong
Debut Game: Donkey Kong Country (SNES, 1994)
Claim to Fame: Donkey Kong's nephew really made an impact on this series of games. Not only does he wear that cool baseball hat, but while Donkey had the strength, Diddy had the speed! With Diddy's skill and Donkey's power, these two make a pretty good team.

#5- Paper Mario partners
Sidekick of: Mario
Debut Game: Paper Mario (N64, 2001)
Claim to Fame: In the original "Paper Mario", Mario gets eight new partners to fight on his side, but there are four in particular that I think are the most awesome: Kooper, Bombette, Sushie and Paracarry. While all are useful, they're all pretty unique. Kooper's got the cool looks, and Mario can make use of him by using the classic Koopa Kick! Bombette is also da bomb, and how often do you see a female bob-omb? As for Sushie, well, she helps Mario quite a bit. It's not everyday you see Mario riding on the back of a tiny fish. Not only does Paracarry live up to his name, but in battle, he's got a lot of cool moves! Yeah, I had to make this one a four-way tie, because it's hard to pick just one favorite from this game!

#4- Dixie Kong
Sidekick of: Diddy Kong
Debut Game: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES, 1995)
Claim to Fame: Diddy Kong may have been a pretty cool sidekick, but he's nothing compared to Dixie Kong! She's about the same size as Diddy, but what makes her so unique is her long blonde ponytail, which she uses to make herself float in mid-air! Also, being about the same size as Diddy, she can give him some trusty piggyback moves! Yeah, Diddy and Dixie make quite an awesome team. That girl's got moxy!

#3- Tails
Sidekick of: Sonic the Hedgehog
Debut Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SG, 1992)
Claim to Fame: Some may find him annoying, but Tails is definately one of the best sidekicks of all time. He's been helping Sonic a lot since 1992. He may not be quite as cool as Sonic, but he's a fox with two tails, and he can fly! What an advantage this guy became to Sonic! You can't really get much more awesome then that, and you gotta admit, he's also kinda cute.

#2- Rush
Sidekick of: Mega Man
Debut Game: Mega Man 3 (NES, 1990)
Claim to Fame: What sidekick of the Blue Bomber can be more awesome than his dog, Rush? A robotic dog who can help Mega Man out by springing him up to higher places, transporting him through the sky, transporting him underwater, and giving him all sorts of unique powers. What kind of stuff can we expect to see him do next?

Alright, so you've seen almost the entire list. So what sidekick made #1 on my list? Well, here it is!
(drum roll...)

#1- Yoshi
Sidekick of: Mario
Debut Game: Super Mario World (SNES, 1991)
Claim to Fame: It's probably no big surprise that the #1 video game sidekick on my list happens to be the sidekick of Mario. Yoshi is cool, cute and useful. Mario has been riding on his back since he was a baby. He's got that long tongue and can eat just about anything! Moreover, he's a dinosaur! You can't get much cooler than that! So that's why Yoshi is made worthy of being the best video game sidekick of all time. Go, Yoshi!

So concludes yet another top 10 list of mine. Hope it turned out good for the most part. Of course, I will be expecting to hear complaints as to why I left some out, like Navi, Link's annoying fairy sidekick, and probably also lots of sidekicks from games that I haven't even heard of. But whatever, people like to complain, and there's not really anything I can do about it. Stay tuned for my next article coming soon.

    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
I still gave it a thumbs up btw, but I would've liked to see Luigi. I always thought he was cooler than Mario.
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
Kudos for mentioning Tails and Yoshi! ^.^ But seriously, no Luigi?
    mickey12 Posted 4 years 19 days ago
    how vcould you forgt Luigi?
    starfox81 Posted 4 years 10 months ago
i always thought of luigi being mario's sidekick and tails fucking annoying
    luckyfanpup101 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I didn't know Yoshi was a dinosaur. I always thought he was a turtle or something because of his shell.
    l4nkid22 Posted 5 years 11 days ago
ummm you forgot some final fantasy 7 characters chief.
    SgtPeppers1987 Posted 5 years 17 days ago
Yep I agree Yoshi is definitely #1 but you really should of put Navi in there I mean come on! BTW Fuck Tails that stupid fuck was always getting killed in Sonic 2 by the stupidest shit, but you couldn't of left him off because if you think of Sonic you think Tails also and thats what really makes a good sidekick.

maybe in the next article you can put munch from munches oddysee abe was a main charecter or.... you can put abe as a sidekick as munch could be a main charecter good article by the way :)

What I hated about Tails was in the Bonus Levels in Sonic 2 where he followed behind you collection coins in a giant half pipe. When you try to avoide the spike bombs, Tails reacted a second after you and he always gets hit which makes you lose rings.
Miss Icia Posted 5 years 2 months ago
I wanted Tails to be #1. :( He's always been my #1 Sidekick.
    Blue96sky Posted 5 years 2 months ago
I agree that Yoshi should be #1 because He saved mario tie and time again. if it wan't for yoshi mario would be dead
    1ic1 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
    W00t Yoshi FTW!!!
Jerk Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Half these are tard-baby picks from someone who was 1 year old in 1997

    Pastel from Twinbee.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 2 months ago

    YoJoe83 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
    good job on the layout.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 2 months ago
lol hey dude jim's sidekick's name is actually spelled with two t's.
other than that this is an ok article
thabz Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Nice article, so what if it's another count-down.

How about the Police from Streets of Rage, do they count as sidekicks? coz you can call them up (doesn't matter if its on the deck of ship!) and from their car, deliver enough fire-power if the main characters are out numbered or if you need to reduce the stamina level of a boss.
Dzenan Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Navi should be here from the Zelda: Ocarina of Time series, she puts up with so much, and if it wasnt for her, Link would not have made it out of Kokiri forest.
    jango52577 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Rush is not cooler than Tails...but he serves the same purpose. Transportation as needed by the main character.
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
yeah of course luigi is left off, but how about some of the other sidekicks that nobody would be expecting to be on this list?

    - i mean, if luigi counts as a sidekick, then how about the other guy from Contra or Ikari Warriors? He may have only been a different color (for instance a red bandana instead of a blue one or vice-versa). I know it made a difference to me.
    - how about the coach from Mike Tyson's Punch Out? you don't get to play as him, but he's still a quasi-sidekick. good advice is just as good as giant boosts to otherwise unreachable ledges. Although the coach did force him to job in a pink jogging suit. woof! and you thought Bobby Knight was mean. that's just downright cruel. but then again, who's to say sidekick's aren't a pain in the butt. in fact, i think it's almost a requirement.
    - if not even being able to play as the sidekick counts, how about the hot chick in the passenger seat in Outrun? I know I'd put her on this list. Several times. she'd hit you if you crashed or ran out of time, yet did nothing to contribute to the race. she didn't even change the radio station. she just sat there and listened to the same one you chose before the race. wow, talk about lazy. sounds like the usual hot blonde riding in a ferrari to me.
    - how about Scott Skiles on NBA Jam TE for the arcade? you only played as Orlando to be Shaq, but Skiles wasn't too bad of a sidekick, even if he got thrown around like a napkin.
    - what about the little fairy in Ocarina of Time? sometimes annoying, but definitely helpful.
    - since you listed a playstation game and i'm counting passengers in cars, how about the other guy in the Hammerhead truck on Twisted Metal 2? Although he probably did more than ol' blondie did in Outrun. he actually killed other drivers with rockets. blondie tried to kill her own driver every 10 seconds. (side-note: hammerhead, at least i think, is one of the worst cars on twisted metal 2)
    - resident evil 4 had that cute chick you had to save. annoying? ....God yes. hot? depends on if you want to go to jail or not. a legitimate sidekick? of course not. i just thought i'd mention her and make you think a little, even if you were screaming at your monitor that i was wrong.
    - my last one is zip from chip&dale rescue rangers for the NES. that little dude saved me a bunch of times on that game (which seemed to go on...and on...and on...until I had learned the ENTIRE alphabet. in case you're wondering why i chose zip instead of dale, i'm going along with no luigi theme of the article. (player 1=mario/chip, player 2=luigi/dale, yoshi=zip?) maybe i pushed that last little equation, but zip did destroy EVERYTHING in his path. not bad for a fly.

that is all, just felt like talking after a long day of work. nice article dalmationlover, as usual.

There. Maybe that will explain why I didn't include Luigi on this list.
    SquidMan93 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
    Where's Luigi?
toonwatcher Posted 5 years 2 months ago
About time someone did an article on sidekicks but you forgot the greatest sidekick of them all: Luigi.
davidyck Posted 5 years 2 months ago
nice list, i dont have a problem with it, so dunna vurry
    retroguy78 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
I thought this was a good Top Ten list. It's a nice change of pace.

I didn't know Diddy Kong was Donkey Kong's nephew.

Don't forget Luigi from the original Super Mario Bros. games.
    Gundam_Warrior Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Luigi king of video game sidekicks!

    Others -
    Red XIII (FFVII)
    Vincent (FFVII)
    Cid (FFVII)

Videogamenerd Posted 5 years 2 months ago
It is a nice list and you had some really good sidekicks on there. overall good article
Thew Posted 5 years 2 months ago
    where is Luigi?
velcrohead Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Credit for writing skills. Your article would've been better served to examine the video game sidekick as a function...maybe explore your basic topic a bit. As it was, it felt like a well-written, attention-getting cop-out, and I've seen you do more.

Eh, decent article, but I am getting tired of all these top ten countdowns.
    ===

I agree with shiroihikari on this.

Top 10/20/50 articles are really becoming old. I'm not sure why these articles feel the need to place things in a specific order.

It's not a bad article, though. I just wish it was more of an "article" and less of a "Top 10 list."

TurboDuo Posted 5 years 2 months ago
This was a good article, but I would've changed some of the characters.
frostydude Posted 5 years 2 months ago
    yosho always wins-me likey
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Eh, decent article, but I am getting tired of all these top ten countdowns. At least you can spell and write complete sentences, though, so I gotta give you credit for that.

Also, Yoshi kinda gets on my nerves, actually. Sure, you can do some fun stuff with him but catching him after getting hit is a frigging pain. I think I like Rush or Tails better than him.
Caps 2.0 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Well done, DL. While I'm not much of a gamer myself, I must say that this was a well-written piece. I was most interested in the bit about the Paper Mario sidekicks, if only because they're basically the good versions of enemies Mario dealt with in past games.
