10 Reasons Why the 90's Beat the 00's

The 90's were a great decade and it so beats the 00's.

First thing's first. The 90's were such a great decade. When you put it up against the current decade known as the 2000's, you'll easly see that the 90's were more fun.

10. Back in the 90's, television wasn't infested with reality TV. The most "real" TV was America's Funniest Home Videos and Cops. Now, whenever you turn the TV on, there's nothing on but American Idol, shows where the love of your life is swapped, people eating worms, and nanny's who think they can control spoiled brats.

9. The world wasn't infested with war. I'm going to try and not be too political on this one, but in the 90's, you felt safer riding on an airplane or visiting New York.

8. TV commercials were much better. In the 90's, there wasn't as much insulting of your intelect, really bad comedy, and sex. You were more attracted to the product advertised and not repelled.

7. Video games were a lot funner. Remember playing your Genesis, SNES, N64, and Saturn? Remember the quality games? Today, you have ultra HD graphics and games with so much blood, you gag 10 times each level.

6. Television seemed more family oriented and clean. Want a perfect example? Look at Full House. It contained a lot of child themes, however retaining a base where mom, dad, brother Bob, and sister Sarah could enjoy. Today, all of the jokes in sit-com's are just one thing. Sex! Is that all they ever think of? Good grief!

5.

Carolina Circle Mall: Great 90's Mall

Carolina Circle Mall 2006: Gone with a Wal-Mart under construction

Is it just me or is quality retail ain't what it used to be? My town had a mall called Carolina Circle Mall. It was a perfect example of typical 90's mall. It had a carousel, it had a video arcade, it had an ice cream shop, it had a movie theater, and it had a Montgomery Ward. But with the dawn of the 2000's, the mall closes and in 2005 is destroyed with a Wal-Mart set to open this summer. I miss a retail area where you could go and not only shop, but relax with friends on a carousel.

4. In the 90's, you listened to audio cassettes and/or CD's. As for me, I didn't start listening to CD's until about 1997, but you get the point. Anyway, today people listen to iPod's and MP3 players and forget the true meaning of dropping by the nearby record store and buying that new tape or CD.

3. Music had a better variety. Rap was popular in the 90's, but it wasn't that popular because the 90's consisted of variety like rock, metal, reggae, etc. As for me, I listened to the Eagle's and Peter Paul & Mary, but who cares? Today, every single radio station plays rap. I'm getting sick of it. ARGH!

2. Video editing was a lot easier. However, I prefer today's computerized editing. But the big point is video recording. Most video camera's recorded straight to VHS. Today, you have to record it to Mini DV, Hi-8, etc and convert it to a VHS tape. Pretty long, huh?

1. The number one reason would probably be what most nostalgic 90's people talk about. Nickelodeon! In the 90's, you had Rugrats, Double Dare, GUTS, Pete & Pete, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Nick Arcade, Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, etc. I nearly cry when I turn the TV onto Nick today. Ever since at least 1998, Nick has been going down a bottomless pit of doom. I always find it comforting to stick in my old retro Nick tapes in the VCR and take a trip down memory lane. Hey, I'm a Roadgeek.

Very good points, even now in 2013. I grew up in the 90's and currently feel like I'm having a quarter life crisis. Everywhere you look the world loves drama, what happened to a world more like saved by the bell, beavis and butthead , and hey arnold!!!

The world is going in the trash can, I'm almost starting to believe in armageddon because in a world where dousche bags from the Jersey Shore can become famous and loved is a world that deserves to be destroyed.

This article was a great read. I agree with every point. Here's a few comments I gotta add:

#10. I hate reality TV. I don't understand why it's even called that, because when people know they're being filmed, they don't act the same way. True reality TV would be filming people in secret. People in reality TV shows play up their performance for the sake of the show.

#7 Yeah, all the big video games now are about war and death. World of Warcraft, Halo, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed..... What happened to fun games? Where's the next Mario? Or Sonic? These games radiated with originality, and you could play them over and over again, even though you knew exactly what was coming next.

#6 There's way too much sex on TV. In sitcoms, commercials, music videos, and everywhere else they can cram it. Is there not more to life than sex?

#5 I'm tired of the lack of originality in cities. Every town has a Wal-Mart, and each one is laid out just like the others. Cities are losing their personalities because they look and feel like each other. I used to love going to the mall when I was a kid. Now the mall is a ghost town.

#3 Music is an abomination. It's lazy, prepackaged, and is content to shovel more sex and filth down our throats.

#1 The only cartoons I've seen in recent years that I really liked have been Flapjack and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. There ain't much to pick from anymore. Back in the 90s, you had to choose what you wanted to watch most, because there would be several good shows on at the same time. Now I just watch DVDs. Lately it's been Reboot and Bump in the Night, which were two of the best shows to come out of the 90s.

I grew up from 1993-2006 and yeah I will very much agree that today sucks period But you look at 1990-2004 the 90s and the early 00s are very simeller becuase there close in time in 2007 things start changing now the 90s and today are not alike .

I totally agree with you. TV today sucks. I don't have cable because I think this new digital cable stuff is stupid. I had it for a while and all it does is get blocky and go black during a good part in a show. I hate DVDs and Bluray because if you get the slightest nick on them they stop working. VHS you could run over with a car and it would still work! Nickelodeon is full of shows with underage girls dressing way to sexy for their age. I don't let my son watch anything but PBS kids and DVDs of cartoons from the 80s and 90s so that he can have some sort of imagination. Great article man.

Dude i totally agree with you on almost everything youre saying. I feel that way all the time. Threes less fun in the 00s than the 90s. theres less things to do, and even though we're becomming more technologically advanced we're making things harder for ourselves and things r so confusing to use. Its not fair that everythings on the intenet especially for older people. Everything it computerized these days you cannt even enjoy the simple things in life anymore. I even heard newspapers may be online only and many other items. But i digress, TV shows suck period. I only wach sports, sportscenter, mlb network, and nick@nite, or vhs's or dvd's of older 90s shows. Video games were way better so much more to choose from. Except sports games r way better graphic wise. I feel like the things r getting very plain and boaring. like you said about the carolina mall, there r way too many big market stores, which is scary. Too many walmarts, targets, you name it. I could talk all day but all i have to say the 90s rocked, 00s suck(except for the little bit of 90s retro shoes and clothes comming back).

Are you serious?? The 90's was the worst decade ever!! Every decade before and since was better than the 90's. You're gay.
    BeatlesFan97 Posted 3 years 8 months ago
Ya I know, Whats up with tv??? everything is always crude like family guy and the simpsons!!! I am a Christian and aganst all this!!!
tyrusspunk Posted 3 years 10 months ago
TV does suck nowadays. Its to the point where i am considering dropping cable and just using the internet/what i can get OTA for news and stuff. Everything is sex or reality on TV today. I mainly watch the Discovery channel and flip between whatever else is on.
Radios still good in my area. In the 2000s a few LP stations that play orignal music have signed on. MP3 players are better than CDs, but remember the days of trading tapes and CDS with friends. Also recording that newest hit onto a cassette from ur radio.

But the 2000s did make the internet what it is today, and without that us 90s junkies couldnt get our fill of classic material.

Wow. I agree on ever point you've stated there :O But it's these days when we have to move on (

I was about to disagree with your whole article until I got to your number 1 reason. I must say that I agree whole heartedly.
Hgonz Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I agree 2000's really do suck. I miss the 90s especially the 90s NIckelodeon.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    I agree with 99centsplease.
smackthatweirdo Posted 5 years 9 months ago
The 90s were awesome, but about your article. Some points make sense, other don't, like saying HD graphics in games are bad, or that buying mp3 players are much worse than CDs. The technology of the game doesn't make it good, but it doesn't make it bad either. Mp3 players also make it very convenient to store all your music into one place, as opposed to switching out every CD. If you really think they're worse, you should make better reasons, I think.

    99Centsplease:
    Seinfeld = bonus
And Nick/CN suck now because they just try to use as little amount of money into animation and production as possible. You can definitely see it in Spongebob; used to be great, as it was born just as Nick was falling, but started to decline because Nick followed the quantity-over-quality way of thinking (I think, anyway).

ok we all know who mush you love the late 70's and 80's

but for those of us that werent born yet to have seen all that stuff this is our 80's
    pokeeto2 Posted 5 years 10 months ago
Yep, I with you about the Nick thing. I was a Nick-O-holic and around 1998 it just went downhill. More cartoon and kiddy shows. Nickelodeon forgot it's roots.
    99Centsplease Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Nick and Cartoon Network are "dead" because we're too old for them.

    The answer: SEINFELD!
    Hofner62 Posted 6 years 1 month ago
I love the 90's more than the 2000's, too. I was in high school from 1991-1995 and I always had my cassette walkman with me. Obviously, we couldn't listen to them in school but I had it for the walk home. It was nice to put those headphones on and get lost in my own world for the 45-minute walk home....I would go through one side of a 90-minute tape. I watched some of those old shows on Nick in the 90's, and I still watch some that are on today but not many. In the 90's was when I started to gain my independence and make decisions as an adult regarding where to go, what to do, and when to do it....so from 1995-1998 was an exceptionally fun time for me.
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
    Hmmm, they both suck.
    Copper20 Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Cartoon Network's gone downhill too. There's nothin' good with that channel!
webbah Posted 6 years 4 months ago
I liked this artical, and totally agree about the whole Nick thing. I actually tried to sit through the Xs, it didnt happen. To put it frankly, it sucked. The only good Nick cartoon, is Danny Phantom, i can actually sit through it.
    pimp3491 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
I agree, it was also a lot simpler. Everything was good, no terrorist bs, no Afgan/Iraq war, the economy was doing awesome. Now, its all gone to hell...I didn't have cable till late 90's so I miss the great cartoons of the local channels, and nobody can say TV today (especially cartoons) is better than before!
TherealRNO Posted 6 years 8 months ago
--it's obvious he is just favoring nostalgia over the inescapable present--

The inescapable present sucks...And besides, this IS retrojunk, the site where people live off of nastalgia.

And FYI, Nick was NOT crap. Alongside FOX, WB!, Disney, and the "baby" Cartoon Network, toons were so much more inviting and TV itself was more entertaining.

    Now...it all sucks egg shells.
Roadgeek Posted 6 years 9 months ago
People, let's please take it easy on any flames. This was my very first Retro Junk article and I didn't know what the heck I was doing. But thanks for the good ratings for this article.
    Daniel_BMS Posted 6 years 9 months ago
What ADH_adh is referring to is that you always think of a time period as the golden age for any phenomenon when you turned 15. As much as I have to agree with so many of the author's points, it's obvious he is just favoring nostalgia over the inescapable present.
    ADH_adh Posted 6 years 10 months ago
And the Reason Number 0: the writer of this article was way much younger, and now? He's getting older! That's unfair!
It's called the Golden Age Myth in literature.
Evil Dr. Spears Posted 6 years 11 months ago
I agree totally. Especially on the CD/Mp3 thing. I mean, yes, mp3s are more conventient but at the price of the soul. Part of the joy of album hunting was the hunt itself. It's not the same knowing that any song you think of is just a few clicks away.
    Sonic4EVER Posted 7 years 3 months ago
Well, some of these I don't agree with, but besides that, #1 is soooooooooo true! What happened to the old gameshows, commercials, and Stick Stickly? WHY DID NICK HAVE TO SELL THE NICK STUDIOS?!?!?!?! I miss the gameshows so freakin much. Man... :(
    Score:
    8
