Childhood Randomness

Odds and Ends of my youth and Gum ball machine treasures.

TOYS

Bigwheel

I remember kids thundering down the street with these bad boys. The sound of the plastic wheel grinding against the concrete sidewalk could only be beat by putting a playing card in your bicycle wheel spokes with a clothespin. Either way flip, flip, flip or rumble rumble you announced your presence to the world.

Finger Monsters

You could get these from either the dentist's toy chest (you had to have no cavities to choose a prize) or from gum ball machines. I would put one on every finger and run around the house "scaring" everyone.

M.U.S.C.L.E. toys were already covered by Spencer in his Retro Machine vol.1 but they so were so well loved by me and my brother that I had to include some of my favorites.

M.U.S.C.L.E. knockoffs

These are some of the knock off cheap rubber ones you could get from the gum ball machines.

Penny racers, you stuck a penny in this little slot in the back and they did tricks like spinning around and stuff.

Suction Shuriken was another gum ball machine toy that you could throw and stick to almost nothing except the window.

Sticky hands from gum ball machines were a lot of fun you could whip them and stick them to anything. I went to a carnival recently where my two year old son used one to get loose coins from a bowl beating most of the older kids and getting more money (around $2.00). How proud I was of him as I wondered where they got that cool sticky hand that I remembered from my childhood.

ALTERNATE ENDING BOOKS

Ah reading was a favorite past time of mine and I still love books to this day. Some of the first ones I remember owning were the Choose Your Own Adventure style books. Remember the empowerment as you flipped the pages anxiously awaiting your fate from your perilous decisions to see what would happen. I remember cheating if I "died" and going back to make another choice. There were Dungeons and Dragons Endless Quest books, Choose Your Own Adventure, Which Way Books, Find Your Fate, and What Do I Do Now books. "You must choose, but choose wisely"!

STICKERS

During the late 70s early 80s there was a wave of sticker craziness washing over all kids, girls or boys. There were stickers for everything, T.V. shows, movies, toys, etc. and endless varieties like puffy or holographic. Every card pack had at least some stickers in it. You either put them in your sticker album or plastered them on every available surface from skateboards to lockers to lunch boxes. You could buy them in sheets or get them from gum ball machines in a roll or on cards. At school your teacher would reward you with a Gold Star or a scratch n' sniff sticker. Scratch n' Sniff stickers had nearly every scent available from cherries to freshly cut grass to stinky tennis shoes.

Scratch N' Sniff

Popcorn and Rootbeer

Chocolate Ice Cream and Pizza

Chocolate Cake, Popsicle and Chocolate Milk

Cherries, Peppermint and Cherry Pie

Skunk, Leather and Pancakes

My favorite scratch n' sniff stickers: the Monster Cereals Booberry, Count Chocula and Frankenberry.

Puffy Stickers

Superheroes, Alf and the A-Team

Masters of the Universe and Dragon's Lair

Sticker Sheets were available with almost any character tie in on them.

Gremlins and Dragon's Lair

Card Pack Stickers

Garbage Pail Kids

I plastered most of my garbage pail kids in my collector's album which eventually got thrown away. I wish I had just left the stickers on the cards and I might have still had them saved along with my other cards.

Activity book stickers

There were Activity books that were combinations of Coloring books, games and puzzles, and stickers that you pasted to complete the picture. The stickers usually came on a sheet attachment in the front or back of the book.

TATTOOS

I remember getting little books (about 1 inch square) filled with temporary "lick 'em and stick 'em" tattoos from the gum ball machines. My favorite was a pirate flag type jolly roger skull and crossbones. They came on a small transfer sheet that you would lick the back of then place and hold to your skin trying not to wiggle it to avoid blurring the tattoo. The ink was usually blue and I proudly sported them on my forehead, biceps, and the back of my hands.

ERASERS

Pencil toppers and erasers sure made learning fun but it made it difficult if not impossible to fit all of your pencils into your pencil bag. All of my pencil bags had broken zippers.

Man-At-Arms, He-Man and Skeletor

Promotional glasses

First thing after I got home from school it was straight to the cupboard to grab my favorite cup, for a tall glass of chocolate milk. I remember that movie glasses were available at all types of different places from gas stations to restaurants. My favorites were my Star Wars ones (From Burger King) especially Jabba and the Sarlac Pit and my Goonies ones (from Godfather's Pizza) especially my Bone Organ one. It was a sad day indeed when one of them broke.

CANDY

This really belongs in my last article Corner Convenience Stores,
In response to some of the comments.

For knuclear200x, yes cherry chan did change names and packaging to cherry clan. Now a days all of the Ferrara Pan fruit candies have changed names: Johnny Apple treats to Appleheads, Alexander the Grape to Grapeheads, Mr. Melon to Melonheads, Cherry Clan to Cherryheads; with the exception of Lemonheads and the new Orangeheads.

For scrymusic, I do remember the Gremlins candy containers and loved them. I definitely would have included them had I remembered. Do you remember the E.T. the Extra Terrestrial containers?

Until next time

What were those books teaching how to draw stick figures!? (sounds stupid i know but it actually taught you how to draw many things in cool stick figure form.) they came out in the same time period as all this.... let me know PLEASE!!

I feel almost obligated to talk about this stuff that I used to think was so damn cool. I hadn't thought about Choose Your Own Adventure in literally years. I found a list of them on wikipedia because I remembered a particular one, which was called UFO 54-40. On page 100 you would descend to the surface of a planet to be welcomed by benevolent aliens. It was paradise. I searched and searched but there was no way to get there. The author assumed you were going to cheat and flip-through the book (naturally) and when I realized this fact I remember being absolutely awestruck.
You also talked about big wheels, and I had easily the baddest big wheel on the block. When I got it it was red and yellow, not too impressive. I was a big Knight Rider fan, not so much for the show, but I thought Kit was about the coolest thing ever. My uncle was into detailing cars and I remember telling him how cool Kit was on numerous occasions. One time he came over with some of his gear and modded my big wheel. He took it apart, spray painted it all black, and put this shiny red sticker on the handle bar. He also put some random button looking stickers he had on the console.
This thing was my prized possession, and I was definitely the only kid in the whole neighborhood to have a custom Knight Rider bigwheel. I remember some punk from down the street stole it and hid it in the bushes near my house, and my dad climbed down to get it back for me.
I also vividly remember those finger monsters and the sticky hands. They would always end up covered in hair and dirt and would never be quite the same.
Great article, I don't know if I would've remembered any of this stuff so viscerally. Really fun to read.
scrymusic Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Holy shit!! I read the Indiana Jones books... The Eye of Fates was my Favorite...and Vampire Express.. wow!!

Did you order from Troll Books? LMAO

I had those ET Collector cups... Damn... So much stuff here!!!

Logan rules the 80's articles!!! Great Job!!

Garbage Pail Kids, Scratch and Sniff stickers, Penny Racers and all the stuff that made the '80's one of the best decades ever...

That just makes me sentimental for childhood days "SNIFF" :-D
Rhandey Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Thanks for the trip. Forgot about a lot of this stuff. And off to memory-ville I go . . .
PatrickRsGhost Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I remember the puffy stickers fondly, although most of the ones I had seen involved "girlish" icons, like Rainbow Brite or Barbie or unicorns and rainbows.

I remember when I was 10 or 11 I used to have this book called "Free Stuff For Kids" that was a directory of various companies you could write to and request free stuff, or stuff that cost no more than $2. One thing I remember ordering was a couple of sheets of rainbow letter stickers, and then I ordered a load of stuff from the company that were all rainbow prism stickers. They had different categories or subjects, like sports, animals, etc. They even had stickers that you could order your name to be printed on, but there was some restriction to that I think.

Another thing I remember were the Panini (was that it?) sticker books. They mainly came out whenever a new Disney movie hit the theaters (or was re-released), although I clearly remember a "Simpsons" one when the show was first aired on Fox. The books had blocks with a number in them, and the packs of stickers contained five or ten stickers apiece. Each sticker was numbered, and you were to put the corresponding sticker in the right block. There was a caption under each one, describing what the sticker was supposed to be.

I remember the scratch-n-sniff stickers my Kindergarten teacher gave us. They were in these workbooks that taught children how to write and pronounce the letters of the alphabet. Each letter had its own book. In the workbook there might be a couple of pages or so of a picture with items that start with that letter, mainly items Kindergarteners would recognize or be able to remember, like a strawberry and a skunk in the "S" book or "Banana" and "Ball" in the "B" book or "Orange" and "Octopus" in the "O" book. The picture with the orange had a scratch-n-sniff sticker on the orange, and it smelled like an orange. The one I remember clearly was in the "P" book, with a picture of a jar of pickles.

As far as collector glasses, I remember the Garfield collector glass mugs that McDonald's sold back in the 80s. We had one that had Garfield on one end of a teeter-totter and Odie, Pooky, and Arlene on the other, with the teeter-totter bending down on both ends.

Amalyna - we didn't have Offie, we had Louie The Lightning Bug down here in Georgia. He was to our local major power company what Reddy Killowatt is to others. The only time we see him today is around the holidays.
BloodMist Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I was into, wow, all of those things.Every single one of em.Not much more to say except nice nostalgia trip.
amalyna Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I loved those choose your own adventure books. And scratch and sniff stickers- I still have my brother's dresser from the early 80's and it's completely covered in stickers. Does anyone remember Offie, that light bulb cartoon that talked about wasting electricity?
Serj Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I had a willow sticker book lol.
smithonwayne Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I remember all those scratch 'n sniff stickers, and the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books...what a treat, thanks for helping me remember.
Funky Guy Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Very good stuff in this article. Especially the stuff about Big Wheels, it really was like being in a biker gang. The best part was when I had mine the street I lived on was a really steep hill, great for racing and going really fast. No one wore helmets and the parents never said anything.
themangler Posted 5 years 5 months ago
wow i wish i still had all of these things...
orliaurelijah Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Of what you mentioned I remember:
    - finger monsters
    - sticky hands
    - choose your own adventure books
    - scratch n sniff stickers

I think they were all a little before my time, but I had a lot of second hand stuff.
Lifeonlayaway Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I have the superheroes puffy stickers on my door right now...wow...when we were young my brothers and I would always put stickers on our bedroom doors. Just seeing that is like woah...it's just crazy to see that.
taciturnwes Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Cool article, loved those Choose Your Own Adventure books, the Indiana Jones ones were the best, I'd usually cheat and hold my place when switching pages and would flip right back when I saw the bold 'THE END' words. And man, I had that Darth Vader eraser and had completely forgotten bout it till now, thanks for the refresh, thumbs up.
JoltCola Posted 5 years 5 months ago
My favorite part to this article was, besides the writing, which was rather good, the PRICE TAGS on the Star Wars Toys! Those fluorescent orange price tags with that tell-tale Toys R Us lettering for 97 cents reminds me that a dollar used to be worth something!
volkstraum Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Nice artricle about the bric-a-brac that falls through the cracks of most articles
Falcor Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I never had a bigwheel. I always wanted one. A friend I used to play with down the street would let me ride his though. Sticky hands and finger monsters, I loved those things. :D I was crazy about Choose Your Own Adventure, Which Way Books, Find Your Fate, too.

I think I might actually have or had those Gremlins stickers, at some point. :D
ooliyo Posted 5 years 5 months ago
YYYYYYYYYES!!!!!! I had "PILLARS OF PENTEGARN" is was one of the best our of those D&D series. And boy did I love "Finger Monsters".
tron Posted 5 years 5 months ago
We must be about the same age as I remember ALL of this stuff. Heck, I even still own alot of it! Those E.T. heads that contained candy . . . . the head was cool but the candy was always horrible!
Coltyhuxx Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Amazing what gets hard coded into the adolescent brain. I had a lot of these exact items, in particular some of the erasers and stickers and the Endless quest books and seeing them again brought back a lot of memories.
Bumvoid Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Hey whatever happen to those Cherry Clan candies? Those were good! The big wheel was the best! I was poor back then but I still remember my black and yellow monster.
    MIRV888 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
An Infocom Book of ZORK I. Wow, sweet!
Spottedfeather Posted 5 years 5 months ago
What about the sticker albums where you'd be random stickers in a pack and match the stickers to the numbers/spaces in the book to complete the story ? I miss those. Don't think I ever completed one of them.
rowemedic Posted 5 years 5 months ago
    GOOD STUFF
Spencer Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Oh and I love those MOTU erasers. I actually had an Orko one.
HarryReems Posted 5 years 5 months ago
    Totally rad!
I remember those exact same scratch and sniff stickers.
Our elementary school teachers used to put them on our tests and stuff.
And someone should really write an article all about Muscle Men figures.
    TV1985 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Cool article. I hope to see another one. Like it said at the end "until next time." Well, I'll wait.
Thew Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I MUST find those promo glasses
peijay Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I remember always looking through my sister's scratch and sniff and stickers.

You know..I use to play with M.U.S.C.L.E. toys all the time..but I never knew what the heck it was. Now I know and can look for more to complete my collection back home. Many many thanks!
NLogan Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Spencer check out the forums in the memory lane section, I just might have found a picture of the Spider-man Big Wheel, well sort of. Thanks for your Retro Machine Articles to inspire me to write my own.
Kylecephus Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I remember my school sold the spaceship erasers at the bookstore. Always had my taken by the teacher cause I play with them! My desk was the hanngar bay!!!LOL
    cranium_bear Posted 5 years 5 months ago
wow i remeber all thease things and i loved them all! only other thing i would have added was battle beasts . only because i only ever had one and wanted more. i still want some
onetyme Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Ha!you started this article out with one of the best toys ever.Kids today don't know what their missing.Sure they have power wheels, but there is nothing like riding down a hill on your big wheel at full speed then grabbing the handbrake and spinning the a** end around and doing a spin!!That rocks!!!!
    snkreed99 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
    Great article!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spencer Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Nice job Nlogan! I surely remember everything here and in fact Penny Racers has long been one of the many items on my hard drive ready to go for a future Retro Machine article. Puffy stickers were funny because the top puffy part would always come off eventually, leaving you with the back end of the sticker.

I wish someone could find me a picture of the Spiderman Big Wheel. It seems to have dropped off the face of the earth.
davidyck Posted 5 years 5 months ago
good article. as a kid i enjoyed finger monsters a lot, and i tried to collect as much as i could, but i could nver get more than 2 due to my complete lack of knowledge in keeping them safe.
    sketchbook10 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
why havent people mentioned light-up shoes does knowone remember?!?
    emax4 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
This article is AWESOME!!! I laughed out loud and almost cried when you mentioned about the D&D books and keeping your thumb on the originating page "just in case" you died when you made the wrong choice!! Oh man, those were the days. It's cool that you listed Pillars of Pentegarn too, as that was my first D&D booklet. I had a few other ones including the Revenge of the Rainbow Dragons and Revolt of the Dwarves, but my favorite series had to be from a British publication where you used dice to play out certain battles. There was a few that had a D&D theme, a few from outer space, a Road Warrior theme, and more.

I had stickers too but I think I gave them to my girlfriend's son recently. My favorite had to be the puffy stickers and the glimmery ones from Star Wars. I even remember asking a grocery store cashier for PAID stickers just so that I could add them to my collection! That Boo Berry sticker you added makes the character look high though, haha.

I never had M.U.S.C.L.E. figures or a Big Wheel (thanks, Mom & Dad...), but I did have the collectible glasses and some collectible cards (Star Wars, Pac Man, etc). I distinctly remember having the ET candy dispenser too. Way to go NLogan!!! Keep 'em comin'.

    Thank you guys!
gustogummi Posted 5 years 5 months ago
If anyone can create a great article on this site, it's definitely you, NLogan! This have taken me back to those days when I used to spend money on those little stickers, toys and other goodies from those 25 cent machines!

My dad had those Star Wars glass cups and I had the He-Man pencil toppers and MUSCLE toys.

    Great article, dude!
    StarSprinkles84 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Loved this article too :) You have got to be one of the most creative writers on RJ :)
I sure do miss scratch and sniff stickers and regular stickers and the M.U.S.C.L.E. men lol
    Blueroc85 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I had some finger monsters, some of the M.U.S.C.L.E. men, a bigwheel (mine had smurfs on it). I remeber the Garbage Pail kids. I remeber having a sticker book to keep my collection of stickers in. Things like the tatoos and sticky hands from the gumball machine...I'd bug my mom for a quarter every time we went to the grocery store so I could get those from the machines. the sticky hands would end up not sticking anymore as they would collect all sorts of fuzz and dirt from being stuck to everything. I also remember getting colored slime from the machines. We had some of the promotional glasses with Alvin and the chipmunks, Garfield, and the Smurfs I had forgotten about a lot of this stuff until I read your article! Thanks!
