Saturday Morning Cereals

Tasty treats that started mornings off right while watching cartoons in your underoos

Saturday morning hunkering down watching your favorite cartoons would not have been the same without a bowlful of your favorite cereal.
It all started by cruising down the cereal aisle.
While hanging from the shopping cart in a precarious way you saw the wondrous boxes of cereal go by as a blur. Remember the constant begging for your cereal of choice at the moment or for the spontaneous choice because of a prize offered inside. Every type of cereal imaginable from television shows to movies to action figures, etc.
Many of the boxes had their own memorable characters to hock sugary cereals to children. Some have been around since the 50's or before. For the most part I will only mention the cereals that had a special place in my heart or belly and not the old standby greats like Frosted Flakes with Tony the Tiger or Fruity and Coco Pebbles.

Movie Cereal

From a galaxy far far away came this cereal and it tasted like it too. I bought it anyways being the die hard Star Wars fan that I was.

I remember a rubber finger extender with a light up end that glowed red from this cereal.

Who you gonna call Ghostbusters.

Gremlins cereal was okay to get wet with milk but don't let your mom catch you eating them from the box after midnight while hiding in the pantry.

Batman cereal was only available for a short time after the movie came out. It had a cool batman bank with it. I always liked it best when the prize was in the box or attached to it, as opposed to mail in offers or dumb cut outs.
Who remembers the Addams Family cereal. I had all four flashlights thank you very much!

TV Cereal

The real american cereal? I barely remember Gi Joe All Stars.

Two smurfy cereals to choose from. C'mon it wasn't as bad as your friends catching you eating Strawberry Shortcake cereal.

I pity the fool that doesn't eat my cereal. It was like alpha bits for the illiterate. It only came with "T"s

A delicious blend of rice chex like wafers with a sugary coating with marshmallow weapons.

Videogame Cereal

I always made video game noises while eating these, especially Pac Man. Nintendo it's a cereal wow! Mario or Link you choose.

Healthy Cereals

For some reason I really liked Body Buddies sort of like a sweeter version of Kix. King Vitamin is the cereal your mom would pick for you if you were unlucky enough to not be able to go to the grocery store with her. It was a funky version of Cap'n Crunch but tasted like... well vitamins and not the Flintstones kind either.
Triples cereal was my favorite for a long time. I remember doing a triple take ever time the commercial came on and nearly getting whiplash. Crisp Rice + Crisp Corn + Crisp Weat = delicious! Please bring it back.

Monster Cereals
My favorite cereals of all time! It really pisses me off in my area they are only available around Halloween. Some of you may not even remember Frute Brute or Fruity Yummy Mummy, Admittedly not the best of the series but still worth remembering.

Originally it was shaped like a button with bat marshmallows. I remember when the new pac man-esc ghost shapes came into being.

You can clearly see how the graphic design of cereal boxes has gone downhill or we just have lazy artists now-a-days.

Miscellaneous Cereals I still remember
Cap'n Crunch with Coco Puffs mixed in.
Fruity dinosaur shapes.
Donuts for breakfast.
Ice cream for breakfast.
Candy for breakfast.

Mascot and Mallow Evolution

I remember when cookie crisp came out it had a cool wizard guy on the box. Then the mascot changed to a cookie cop and cookie crook. Then a dog was added. Coooooo...kie crisp. I think it is now a wolf.

Lucky Charms Cereal it's magically delicious! For a brief time there was a wizard mascot instead of Lucky the leprechaun.
Pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, green clovers, and blue diamonds.
I remember when they changed the marshmallows. The first new one to come down the chute was the purple whale. Much later on it changed to a swirly whale, but neither lasted very long. The first permanent change was the addition of purple horseshoes. After that it seems like there was a new marshmallow every time I bought a box. Next up was red balloons. Then pink, yellow, and blue rainbows. Followed by yellow pots of gold. Then for some reason they got rid of the yellow moons and went with blue moons I guess with the pots of gold there was too much yellow already. They nixed the green clovers and went with green leprechaun hats but eventually went back to the clovers. The orange stars transformed into an orange and white shooting star sometimes with 5 and sometimes with 6 points. Now they have a gimic marshmallow for everything. yellow Hidden Keys were shaped like a door and melted into a shape. There were crystal balls and clouds that did the same thing.

The "charms" even underwent drastic complete changes for the holidays with two Winter versions and a Halloween version.

Now if you want it the cereal has spawned two offspring the berry version and the chocolate.

The Alternative
Maybe you were one of those kids who's mom forced them to eat instant oatmeal or cream of wheat. At times I was too. Funny thing now is that I like them. Truth is I liked them back then too but would never admit it to my mom because of the lack of prizes. Well I guess you could count the cream of wheat box that doubled as a pencil box when empty a prize. My favorite of course was

Until next time and remember Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and these cereals were a nutritious or not so much nutritious part of my childhood.

I'm almost 36 and still eat surgary kid cereals. My house has 5 or more kinds at any given moment. It makes me sad that my 17yr old daughter didn't get to grow up with toys in her cereal boxes and now my 8mo old son won't either. I'm so glad I grew up in the 70's/80's!

One cereal I remember liking a lot, but it didn't last long was Strawberry Shortcake. Little pink balls of strawberry goodness :)
thebeatgoeson Posted 1 year 8 months ago
Being in my 30's, I remember ALL of these cereals. The most memorable for me though was Ghostbusters. Not that it was the greatest tasting cereal, even at 8 and 9 years old, but the fact that it glowed in the dark to me was the coolest cereal box ever created. Also it came with a glow in the dark cut out ghost busting license.
There was a blank line where you wrote in your name and it basically said that you were an OFFICIAL Jr. Ghostbuster. Since it was only cardboard, you had to replace the "license" every few weeks or so. I regularly carried one until I was about 11.
jjzizi Posted 1 year 9 months ago
I founfd it! It was Rocky Road cereal! Not S'mores! You can find it here http://nowthatsnifty.blogspot.com/2010/03/30-retro-breakfast-cereals-part-3.html
Oh so good! Wish they were still around!
jjzizi Posted 1 year 9 months ago
Does anyone remember a cereal called S'mores (or something like that)? It was like Golden Grahams but it had chocolate covered marshmellows? Oh that was the best cereal ever!
    BORN1980s Posted 2 years 1 month ago
Never saw Dunkin' Donuts cereal, I wonder how that tasted..

What happened to Waffle Crisp?? That taste stayed in your mouth all day no matter how much you brushed your teeth
Born In The 80s Posted 2 years 11 months ago
I remembered the Addams cereals! They were pretty good. I think my favorite of the film/TV themed cereals was definitely the Ninja Turtles. I still have the bowls!
JohnMatrix Posted 3 years 3 months ago
Awesome article. Is it a bad thing that one of the first activities that I would do with a time machine is buy hundreds of boxes of these cereals? Dont answer that...
    Method101 Posted 3 years 3 months ago
My favorite will always be the rice krispie treats cereal!
    killdoser666 Posted 3 years 6 months ago
america has the best cereal i only ate count chocula once wile in Canada and that was 8 years ago (maybe can order some online)
BenJamin Posted 3 years 11 months ago
To be honest... I don't remember what cereal I use to eat on a Saturday morning. Most of the times my mom would make pancakes and sausage links. Ah... memories.
    ERICT71 Posted 3 years 11 months ago
    ME LIKE CEREAL =D
papajohns Posted 4 years 25 days ago
oh my gosh i wish i was in america, in canada we only have one moster cereal(count chocula) and we only have a couple of the others like lucky charms. and i have also noticed that we do not get movie cereales anymore. i love cereal thats what i useually eat for breakfast except sometimes when i have bagels
Detox Posted 4 years 3 months ago
wow, I've never seen some of the cereals posted here..like the movie cereals..star wars? seriously? oh man, I would have loved to try that...and some of these cereals look really tasty...cereals I had growing up, or on a saturday morning cartoon or electric playground,

    trix
    coco puffs
    honeycomb cereal
    french toast crunch
froot loops (seriously, that was a 90's childhood given)
count chocula (im so happy that's still selling, my all time fave)

I always hated honey nut cheerios and the regular lucky charms cereal, but I do love the chocolate lucky charms....great times.
brantleyjackson Posted 5 years 11 days ago
Oh my God Dude!! Oatmeal Swirlers!! Yes!!
Ravenloft Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Kids nowadays just cannot compare their paltry memories to the halcyon days of yore that were my youth. I honestly believe that my mom bought me cool cereals and so many toys because her generation didnt have nearly as much cool products to choose from. Triples for unsweetened, Nintendo for sweetened and Monster Cereals for my all time favorite. course now they have changed the formula and they are airy less resistant to milk,(remember when Boo berry had a Frosted Alphabits like texture?) peanut flour?!!! what the hell were they thinking. Cookie crisp and Alphabits are my preference nowadays.
Videogamenerd Posted 5 years 2 months ago
Azom article wish they had have the cerals that you have on your article
    Arcee23 Posted 5 years 2 months ago
You Americans have/had some awsome cerials!, We in the UK used to have Lucky Charms but they stopped doing them about 10 years ago, I still crave them to this day!.
kage Posted 5 years 4 months ago
what, no urkel-os!? i hated steve urkel but the strawberry banana flavor kept me coming back for more.

i wish i could've tried the ice cream cone one. sounds tasty and entertaining.
Nintendo Fan 1985 Posted 5 years 4 months ago
Wow, What an Awesome article ! Those Cereals bring back Memories. My Favorite one was and is The Nintendo Cereal.

    The 80's And 90's Rule !
    rockstar6972 Posted 5 years 4 months ago
I completely agree with the writer on the whole Boo-berry, and Count chocula thing, it does only come out around Halloween in my area too. What a bunch of sissy's, if they can go through all the trouble for the ghouls why can't they just kp it on the shelves all year long?
gaijinninja Posted 5 years 4 months ago
Love this article man. "It was like alpha bits for the illiterate." That was very funny and some pretty snazzy writing. Great idea for an article too...wish I had thought of it. Nicely done.
Evilteddybear Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I still have an old sticker on the back of my dresser that I got out of a box of Dinersaurs. I had forgotten about that cereal until just now.
    cweezy619wes Posted 5 years 5 months ago
yeah they also did the same thing to the fruit loops cereal like the lucky charms. They just kept changing the damn shits. Lets face it folks breakfast has been ruined and the kids today that weren't born below the year 95, will never know how good we had it back then. Im glad I got to witness this sh!t
NLogan Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Thanks Knites. I think I have been improving a little with my recent articles. I know it needed some work on the picture placement but it was not as bad as it is now. When the site was updated it changed the width possibly altering further my bad pic placement. I definitely do not remember the Addams family cereal so far out to the right and in the middle of the sentence. On my corner convenience stores article the box candies went from a cool pyramid that was hard to do to a sort of rectangle with no middle on one side after the reformat.
Knites Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I remember having my relatives in another city send me a box of that Pac-Man cereal as it was not available in my town. Good job on the contest win, man. You deserve it.

That said, it wouldn't hurt for you to improve your formatting a bit, so you can place your pictures a little better.

My two cents. Now, I'm gonna go have me some cereal.
pwncssofpowah Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Oh my gosh, that batman bank just brought back a flood of memories for me!
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Remember the Nintendo cereal with Mario and Zelda? That stuff was so good! I hated Cream of Wheat! I don't know why, it just tasted bland to me.

    Pure nostaglia right here.
    twg915 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
The first mascot for Cookie Crisp was Cookie Jarvis. The thing I remember about Ice Cream Cones cereal was the stupid catchy jingle of Ice Cream Jones. He was the one who delivered it.
Hoogs Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Nice article. A few run on sentences, but overall well done. My favorite cereal was Oreo O's. I know it's probably still out and is fairly new, but it's still the best tasting cereal out there IMO.
    Ray8286 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    Well done!
    retro_gamer_Zero Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    yeah.......those were the days....
ive got a sudden craving for count chocula cereal!
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 6 months ago
You're gonna win the article contest! I guarantee it!
    MIRV888 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Frankenberry and BooBerry were my favs.
jerbojones Posted 5 years 6 months ago
yeah I remember the cookie crisp wizard right along when the Burger King commercials were just as good as the McDonalds commercial.....now the king is just some crazy ass stalker.......man I miss the late 70's-80's saturday mornings.
Falcor Posted 5 years 6 months ago
E.T.? Ghostbusters? Gremlins? Addams Family? Nintendo? Pacman? Where was I when these cereals were out? My grocery store must not have had them.

I remember the cookie crook and the cookie cop, from Cookie Crisp. I actually had the figurines they used to give free as prizes in the boxes. Still love that cereal to this day. Yummy!
jerbojones Posted 5 years 6 months ago
yeah diskoboy is right. waffle-o's were good. He dont for get about Do-nuts that was some good cereal too.....Man I wish they still sold smurf berry crunch man that was some good cereal.
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
it's funny how powerful something so simple as an article about cereal can be. i haven't bought cereal in a couple years (ate breakfast at work), but after reading this article i actually made a quick trip to get some lucky charms. General Mills should pay you a commission. nice job.
although, if someone does an article about pop tarts, i might have to make another trip.
    Lindros88 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    Good article. E.T. cereal, lol.
NinjaVanish Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Now who can remember the green honey..I mean ooze that came with the Ninja Turtles cereal at one point. I actually remember the GI Joe cereal tasting pretty damn good. I think the commercial had cartoon GI Joe's telling kids to eat their cereal or they'll be conscripted...but my memory is pretty awful. We never had the anti lead shakedown in the 80's like we do now. God I love the smell of bottles rockets and melted action figures in the morning!!!
diskoboy Posted 5 years 6 months ago
And Microman - they did have DK Jr. Pex dispensers!

    http://www.timepassagesnostalgia.com/&searchkeywords=donkey+kong+junior+cereal&sis=1&rdir=1
diskoboy Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Choco Crunch was the most disgusting cereal ever invented. But man, DK Jr., Smurf Berry Crunch, and Ice Cream Cones Cereal kicked so much ass...

Mr. T cereal was good. It tastes exactly like Cap'n Crunch. And it didn't cut the roof of your mouth.

And you forgot to mention OJ's and Waffle-O's cereal.
MicroMan Posted 5 years 6 months ago
oh, and i heard that the donkey kong jr. cereal had an offer for a dkj pez despenser. i think i saw this at the convention i went to when i was a former pez collector. i would rip my legs off to eat that mario and zelda cereal!
MicroMan Posted 5 years 6 months ago
that dunkin donuts cereal sounds good. i asked my parents if any of these cereals looked familiar and they said that they were the oriental kind of family and they ate eggs and toast for breakfast :P
themangler Posted 5 years 6 months ago
the one i always remeber was Morning Funnies....it was based on Sunday comic strips like Beatle Bailey, Hi & Lois, Dennis the Menace, and a few others. The box had comic strips all over it and on an inside panel...the only problem was that it tasted like cough syrup and was god awful gross!!!
brighteyes Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Oatmeal swirlers were awesome! I loved the instant oatmeal with the dino eggs in them too. Absolutely great article. The Mr T. cereal bit was quite excellent.
Spottedfeather Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I don't know if you don't remember these or just don't like 'em, but what about Croonchy Stars, Quisp, Trix, Sugar Smacks, Rice Krispies Treats, Sugar Crisp, Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles, Crunchberries ?
djbriguy Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    coco puffs?
    cinnamon toast crunch?

I remember being dissapointed in the taste of the TMNT cereal.
    J-Man Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Ice Cream Cones cereal, I can still remember the commercial, "My name's Ice Cream Jones, and I love to eat my Ice Cream Cones". Awesome article!!
avienndha Posted 5 years 6 months ago
nice! my little brother was a lucky charms kid...I was all over Golden Crisps and Honey Nut Cheerios : )
rowemedic Posted 5 years 6 months ago
very good article. i really liked mr T ceral.

i remember the first time i ate nintendo ceral. it was a my grandmothers
    theguilty1 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Batman, Addams Family...I had them all! Haha! I still remember what the Addams Family cereal tasted like. I remember getting a glow in the dark frisbee from the Batman cereal. I think I had to mail away for it.

My favorite, though, had to be Mr. T cereal.
    blueydgrl426 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
That was one of the best articles I've read on this site. I remember wanting the box of Frosted Flakes only to tear into it for the Wacky Wall Walker that was at the bottom. There's just one cereal that you forgot-being a chick, I'll never forget Cabbage Patch cereal!
scrymusic Posted 5 years 6 months ago
OHHH Yeah!!! Body Buddies!! My mom used to buy this shit and expect us to eat it.

We used to piss her off by dumping half a bowl of sugar in it just to give them some flavor.

Donkey Kong wasn't half bad and neither was Ice Cream Cones..

Bar none.. Mr T and Smurf Berries were the best.

Great article... Its refreshing to see something familiar other than the cartoons we watched on Saturday mornings.

    Cheers!
MrCleveland Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I was usually the Health Nut when it came to cereal. (I couldn't have artificial things in my cereals back then.) And I rarely ate (or can remember) eating cereal in front of the TV on Saturday Mornings.
borkumriff Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Oatmeal Swirlers!!! Oh my God, I remember those! You got that little tube of fruit (jelly?) and you could add designs to your boring oatmeal. Man, those were the days...
Hiro Posted 5 years 6 months ago
This is a great article. I was one of the kids who ate Cream of Wheat on Saturdays.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    That's quite an article.
Jack Bauer Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Great article. I miss the days of lounging around for 5 hours on Saturday Morning watching cartoons and eating my favorite cereals. I got Pac-Man cereal for Christmas when I was 7. I really could go for some right now.
bamfingnightcrawler Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I remember the Batman cereal. I got it as a Christmas present and i loved it. It was one of the most memorable presents I have ever recieved.
    h8bumblebee Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I forgot to mention my favorite cereal that you could only get in the States. My Mother would pick it up for me every time she visited friends in Detroit.
    Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch...mmmmmmmm!
    h8bumblebee Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Couldn't agree with you more pjb2377.
    Nice article.
    pjb2377 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
If my mom would've let me eat cereal 24-7 ...I probably would have. What bums me out these days is all the shelves of prizeless cereal boxes...now it's more like "check for code inside-go to his site and enter code for chance to win" ...and I used to think digging to the bottom of the cereal box for my prize was alot of work.
    cranium_bear Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    i loves me some c-3po's
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    Awesome. Thumbs up.
Characteristics Posted 5 years 6 months ago
nice article it takes me back to the days as a kid the smurf berries cereal, e.t., ghost busters, remember freakies??
    tchr99 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    What...no Crazy Cow?!?
Spencer Posted 5 years 6 months ago
MMMMM this is making me hungry, love that Count Chocula.
RetroToon Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Back in the days when just about ANYTHING could be made into cereals or toys, even Mr. T!
HarryReems Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    Awesome pictures.
Good damns, I remember a ton of those.
I have that plastic Batman bank sitting on a shelf in my office.
    Luna2 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
is it just me or dose king vitaman look like the burbger king?

nice article its a nice change from everything sucks now articles
NLogan Posted 5 years 6 months ago
My wife is still mad at me for not including Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I tried to only have those that are nostalgic because they have gone the way of the dodo or that have had significant changes to them. Some of my favorites that are still around are pops, coco pebbles, fruity pebbles, frosted flakes, frosted mini wheats, life, honey smacks, rice crispies, coco crispies. One more nutritious type ceral I miss that has recently been retired was the Strawberry stuffed mini wheats. They have the frosted ones in different flavors now, but these had a soft of jelly fruit inside them.
    retroguy78 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
My mom would not have bought most of these cereals back in the day, and I can sort of see why now. I used to eat Lucky Charms a lot when I was 5 and 6, but I can't eat it these days because the marshmallow pieces hurt my teeth.

I definitely remember Nintendo cereal. It didn't last long though.

I'm more into cereals that appeal to both kids and adults, (Frosted Flakes, Corn Flakes, Frosted Mini Wheats, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cheerios, and Honey Nut Cherrios).
nintendonerd Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Dunkin donuts cereal was good man and so is your article
    RetroBen81 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I seem to remember a lot of these (the Smurf ones in particular, as well as the Dunkin' Donuts one).
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Nice article man. And probably the first one on cereals! I miss the 1980s cereals.
Johndrette Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Good article and I hate you. Every once in a while I still miss some of these and now I would kill for a bowl of each!I don't know if they were really that good or if I was just a kid devoted to my favorite video game/movie but I don't care, I still want them! I'm going to the store now to buy a much as I can of the ones still around! Thanks again and I still hate you.
sinclairband Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    coo good job.

NLogan Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I guess I should proof read these before I submit them. Fruit Brute is misspelled. Lucky Charms marshmallow changes: The horseshoe came out before the whale I have been told. The shooting star has always only had 5 points sometimes when drenched in milk the points can be ambiguous causing me to falsely remember 6 points. The tail of the shooting star can sometimes blend with a point causing it to look like it has only 4 points. The blue diamond was phased out when they changed to blue moons from yellow.
