The Retro Machine (Vol. 8)

A Retro Halloween Edition! Mr. Bones Candy, T2 Meltdowns, and more!

As we make our way towards 100 items, let's take a look at just a few of the things I think of every year around this time. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. Maybe it's the weather, maybe it's carving things up with knives and then lighting them up, maybe it's beloved holiday classics or hayrides or "candy candy candy candy". All of these things create a delicious brew of Retro.

This is me, Halloween 1989. I was 11 years old at the time and as you can tell I was approaching that time of life where I didn't want to stop collecting candy on Halloween, yet was not willing to put too much effort into a costume. So I put on a plaid shirt, cut a slit in a plastic pumpkin, put it on my head and called myself (wait for it) PUMPKIN HEAD!

He-Man Costume

But there was a time earlier in the 80's when I was much younger and Halloween held a certain kind of magic. That's when I really cared about what I was for Halloween. In those days, we'd go to the store and see costumes like He-Man.

This is a He-man costume as it appeared in the 1980's. Remember what shopping for a costume was like then? All the kids costumes came in these square boxes with the clear Cellophane on the front that displayed the mask. Then on the inside was usually some kind of cheap vinyl or something that you'd wear on your body. It was always so cool to envision yourself as something like He-man, but once you put on the costume you would notice things that annoyed you instantly. Like how your constant breathing on the inside of the mask would make your face hot, or how you lacked the ability to see anywhere but straight ahead.

Scary Nails

Perhaps one of my favorite Halloween costume pieces to wear were the scary nails.

These were great because they were easy to apply, comfortable on your fingers, and yet made you feel all scary and "Halloweeny". You always needed to put these beauties on last though, because if you had to button any buttons or zip your coat up, just forget about it, it wasn't happening with those things on. My second favorite pair of "scary nails" was Freddy's Glove, of course.

I loved putting this thing on and moving my fingers around like Freddy. Always scared the crap out of my sister!

McDonalds Halloween Pails

There are many signs that tell us that the fall is coming. The leaves change color, the wind slowly becomes brisk...and Mcdonalds releases their Halloween Pails.

You have to hand it to McDonalds, they have a way of catering to that desire many of us have to follow traditions. I'm sure there are people out there who magically get a craving for salty fries and greasy burgers whenever the calendar changes to October, and you can probably chalk that up to these pails. They are collectible, charming, and a great container for carrying around your tricks and treats. Obviously Mcdonalds is thinking about our children's health because this pail holds alot less than the 10-gallon trash bags some kids like to carry around. That's Mcdonald's for ya, always thinking about our health!

Halloween Decorations at Grandma and Grandpa's

Halloween is made extra special when someone in your family really goes all out for the holiday. When you went trick-or-treating at my grandparents house, you were greeted by this life-sized witch sitting in the front yard and stirring her cauldron.

You can still find that witch outside every year! Waiting for you inside were cool little retro Halloween decorations, such as this light-up ghost.

And to top it all off, they didn't just throw a few Snickers bars at you and send you on your way. They took the time to stuff your treats in special Halloween bags with great little drawings on them that really added class to the whole thing. And of course, Grandma's homebaked goodies were the only kind of candy you were allowed to eat that didn't have a wrapper.

You can still find these today! Class up your Halloween with retro flavor!

Speaking of bags to hold your candy, it's high time we talk about Halloween candy. Let's take a look at some of my all time favorite candies. I think you may be surprised! I'm not here to talk about Twix or Milkyways. Rather, I'm here to talk about some candy that many of you may have long forgotten about.

Mr. Bones Candy

Mr. Bones came in coffins of many different colors. Upon opening the coffin you would find bones made of candy. You usually had at least one of every bone you needed to assemble Mr. Bones and a barely visible diagram on the underside of the coffin lid would show you where each bone needed to go. Sometimes you'd either have bones that were missing or broken that would prevent you from assembling him, but there was nothing quite like putting him together and then eating him piece by piece. Mr. Bones lives on today but it's a different packaging and a different texture of candy. It's definitely worth picking up, but there's no way it beats the original.

Garbage Candy

When you're a boy, there's something appealing about the idea of pretending to do something disgusting. Garbage Candy was just one more way of being disgusting! These little multi-colored trash cans were filled with candy pieces shaped like different pieces of garbage. I think there was a fish bone shape, a chicken leg, and a soda can, at least that's how i remember it. Garbage Candy also lives on today in a different form but I personally find it to be too tarty for my taste. I like the stuff that is sweet and breaks into candy dust quickly in your mouth.

Wax Fangs

Wax Fangs have always held a strange fascination for me. You can start off by playing with them, you know, by just inserting them into your mouth and pretending you're a vampire or something. But then you go to take a bite out of the things and it really is like eating a flavored candle. I mean that in a good way! As you chew it, the flavors are certainly released but you are also left with this "do I eat the wax or do I not eat the wax?" dilemma. There's something unnatural about them but they are good.

Ice Cream Candy

Oh wow, when I was a kid I had these containers all over our house. My father would buy me whatever wacky candy was at the convenience store on his way home from work and Ice Cream Cone Candy was a frequent purchase. The lids came in different colors representing different flavors. I remember a chocolate lid with chocloate topping, a yellow cone with red topping, and a green cone with chocolate topping. The lid popped off and the candy was contained in the "cone" section. The candy itself was little pieces made to look like little ice cream cones or little sundaes. I used to take the mini cones and bite the tops off as if I were eating the ice cream.

Dubble Bubble Gum

In my circle of friends, Dubble Bubble Gum was like the Belle of the Ball for Halloween Candy. If a huge pile of candy was dumped out on the floor, it was every man for himself as we cherry-picked the pile to pull out the Dubble Bubble. If it came out of a pinata then forget about it, blood would be spilled. The best thing about this gum is just popping a piece in your mouth, chewing the flavor out, spitting out the flavorless wad, and then popping another one in. Rinse and repeat until all the gum is gone!

T2 Sour Meltdown

When this candy came out to coincide with the Terminator 2 movie in the early 90's, I was addicted to it like crack. I had never been a big fan of sour candy, but this won me over and I kept going back for more. The case was filled with many tiny balls. When you popped one in your mouth, a wave of sour would hit you. Yes, it would be bitter at first, but what came after was the sweetest sweet relief, a tiny bit of heaven hidden inside a raging ball of hell. A very satisfying product, one that was to blame for many an ulcer in my mouth as well!

And so you arrived home from a night out trick-or-treating. You have your bag full of candy, just waiting to be picked apart. What a better way to unwind than to turn on the television and catch some Halloween specials?

Halloween Television Classics

Garfield's Halloween Adventure is an annual "must-watch". The quirky music keeps it from feeling timeless, but it's still fun to watch Garfield and Odie go on their pirate adventure. The cartoon itself actually gets fairly intense for a kids show, but I think that is part of what makes it a classic. It didn't keep things safe, it put the characters in a sort of perceived danger not often seen in that series. I watched it last year though and really thought to myself that this is a little scary as Garfield and Odie are hiding in the cabinet from the scary pirate ghosts.

There's truly no better way to end a Halloween than with our next show.

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is truly a timeless classic. Every October needs to include at least 1 viewing of this 1966 Peanuts Halloween story. There is no doubt that some of the segments are tired, such as Charlie Brown getting a rock over and over again. Snoopy's Red Baron part has always run a bit long for me. The music however is unforgettable and has become engrained in the fabric of this continuum we call "Retro". I really enjoy how it's good old fashioned innocent family television that will live on forever. Every kids Halloween night should end surrounded by candy on their beds, dozing off to the classic Peanuts piano melodies.

So that wraps it! I could go on and on folks, I really could, there's alot I left out. But perhaps I'll save that for another time. Take care! And Happy Halloween from....

Read this again even thou it's nearing Christmas. I love it! The He-man costume is sweet and the McDonalds pails are soooo classic. Also love the retro paper treat bags, reminds me of retro Halloween pencils I loved back in elementary school.

I still remember the Mr. Bones and Garbage Can-dy. Me and my bro ended up repurposing the little garbage cans as scenery for GI Joe adventures or for weapons for the Ninja Turtles and Superheroes to throw at bad guys Double Dragon style.
    bearkat84 Posted 3 years 13 days ago
my mcdonalds pails had a piece that came off and was a cookie cutter of either a pumpkin, a ghost or a which hat. i had all 3! as for those plastic costumes i only got 2 cuz i was so small and they didnt fit me well so my grandma always made mine. the 2 i had were cherry merry muffin and shredder. the one year my grandmother finally vowed to quit making costumes was when me and my 5 cousins ALL wanted to be the power rangers. we each were a different color (I was pink) and it took her til the last minute to finsh making them all!

brantleyjackson Posted 5 years 13 days ago
I had all those McDonald Pails. This is back when Haloween was actually fun. Growing up sucks.
elron Posted 5 years 14 days ago
I had that He Man Halloween costume. I remember I got it way before Halloween one year, and would wear the full costume to play around the house in, pretending I was He-Man. By the time the 31st came around, my costume was in pretty rough shape because the vinyl material wasn't very durable. My mother had to salvage what was left with a pair of scissors and cut off everything below the waist so that I could wear it to go Trick or Treating.

first off who doesn't like the great pumpkin! Mr. Bones candies where awsome. same with wax lips. And I had the Freddy glove, I even took and customized it by painting it the proper colors and glueing it to a real glove for halloween one year. I still have it to this day.

Anyone remember the deal...I think Hardees did around Halloween where you could get a Kid's meal contained within one of those buckets? I haven't been to the Hardees in my town in years, but I drive by it every day and I'm just hit with a retro moment.
    Blueroc85 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I had some of those McDonald's Candy buckets! (I think some of them glowed in the dark, but I could be wrong)
Every year we watched the garfield halloween adventure and It's the Great Pumkin, Charlie Brown". I have Charlie Brown on VHS. We had the garfield one taped off of TV (on BETA, no less) but it was destroyed when our basement flooded and I have yet to replace it.
scamrock Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I've always had this notion that we were the same person and I was writing these things in my sleep or something. Mostly due to the fact that we had almost all of the same stuff. In fact I amlost had everything on this list with the exception of the Freddy glove.

When I seen the picture of the Pumpkin Head costume, along with the fact that I was only 9 in '89 let me rest assured that we are two different people.

When I didn't recognize the exterior of your grandparents house, I knew it was all just a coincidence...until...THE LIGHT UP GHOST...the same one my grandparents had. I need to try and find a picture of the rest of their Halloween decorations. I'd almost bet money your grandparents have the same ones.

I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE MARIO ONES...

HOW DO I CHANGE MY PROFILE PICTURE?

    MC BOO ROCKED!!! GREAT ARTICLE!!
scrymusic Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Bloodmist, I totally agree with you, Haloween sucks as an adult. Hell!! Try being 32 yrs old and having the joy of sitting outside guarding your porch and handing out treats. LOL It sucks ass!! Plus, almost all horror movies are being remade now and they are starting to lose that genuine B- quality you grew to love when these movies were first new.

My favorite costume growing up was when I made a leatherface costume when I was 11yrs. It was fun to wear it to catholic school for our haloween party. LOL
BloodMist Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Man....it really sucks how i can't celebrate Halloween anymore. For me now, being 24, Halloween just means they'll be showing a bunch of classic horror flicks that i will watch and enjoy, and that's it.No more candy, no more trick or treating, no more costumes. When i was a kid i did all of it, i would usually have really good costumes too, from the classic vampire complete with fake fangs and cape, to a Ninja Turtles Raphael costume that was complete with a turtle shell you put on yourself, to a nasty undead creature with this nasty, oatmeal based makeup that really made you look like you were undead, you had to run a bath to get the stuff off your face, to my last Halloween where i was an insane killer wearing a tiger mask complete with blood covered machete...i went all out.Yeah, of all the holidays there are, Halloween was always my favorite.Sure with Christmas you get presents but, with Halloween? You get something far more interesting.
Lifeonlayaway Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I had forgotten all about those Mcdonald's pails...that's crazy! One thing I do remember though is this cassette I used to have. I got it in a Happy Meal and it had like a Mcdonald's radio broadcast of a Halloween show or something. I loved that freaking tape. Anybody else know what I'm talking about?
Falcor Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Speaking of wax candy, I have no idea what they were called, but does anyone remember these little wax tubes and you'd bite off the end of it and you could drink the candy liquid inside? I used to get them as prizes in Elementary school, and I can't figure out for the life of me what they were.
Falcor Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    Another brilliant article, Spencer. :)

Yess...Those cheap, store-bought costumes! I remember some of those. I remember going as Big Bird, a Smurf, and Raggedy Ann various years, and after just a little while, I'd have to lift the mask off of my face from being so overly warm.

I loved those McDonald's Halloween buckets. Didn't they glow in the dark?
Fangarius Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Great Howl-O-Ween Time Warp! Yes, the holiday which made it special was the Great Pumpkin (a perennial favorite) as well as the candies. There was one odd candy I noticed you forgot about, unless it was a local thing, but do you remember the wax Halloween Whistles?

Nowadays, you'd probably never see them on the shelves, but these where whistles composed out of an edible wax (because kids would eat them regardless). It resembled like a pan flute and you blow spooky sounds from them. They were great.

Do you remember the Howl-O-Ween kids songs Scholastic put out at school? "The Ghost of John," "Oh my Darling, Frankenstein," and other monster parodies. Nowadys if you tried that they'd shut the schools down and have the teachers suspended.

Actually, scrymusic, I do recall the Fat Albert Halloween Special as well as Bugs Bunny's Howl-O-Ween Special. The problem with Fat Albert's specials were CBS always scheduled them against the worst time slots with the other networks. So half the time, it was never seen by many.

Yes, the McDonald's pumpkin buckets were hilarious. I remember my mom once made me purchase EIGHT Happy Meals at once just to get those buckets for school before the holiday was banned from education.

I also recall the Chicken McNuggets character costumes which glowed in the dark. But I have another classic artefact. Does anyone recall the Weebles Haunted House playset with the glow-in-the-dark ghost? I loved that thing.

Yes, Howl-O-Ween was really fun from the 70s to 80s. I even once dressed up as Inky the Ghost Monster from the 'Pac-Man' cartoon, complete with Yogi Bear hat and green sheet. XD

Regrettably, as Bill Cosby once pointed out upon the last airing of Fat Albert's Halloween Special, times have changed and you rarely see many Trick-or-Treaters out and about lately like you used to.

But I do concur, Spence, great article!

    Looking forward to Vol. 9!
scrymusic Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I love reading your articles spencer! You always hit up something from my childhood! Now granted I was 13 in 89' and doing other things other than just standard trick or teating but I will admit.. The McDonalds pumpkin buckets are a hoot and the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown is always a great stand by, but do you remember the Fat Albert Halloween Special?

    No one ever does.

Great article spencer!!! Look forward to the next volume!
berto Posted 5 years 7 months ago
good job i can remember alot of that stuff . i evan have my kids watch those cartoon specials with me
sinclairband Posted 5 years 7 months ago
LOVE IT! THE MOMENT I SAW THE DOUBLE BUBBLE MY TEETH FELT DIFFERENT, CRAZY.
Spencer Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Thanks for the kind comments guys, I'm happy you like it and it's something I really enjoy writing. Amazingly, all the other Halloween shows that you guys mention are shows I haven't heard of, like the "Halloween is Grinch Night" and so on!

I'm SO HAPPY to see there is at least 1 other person who remembers Garbage Candy! Let me just tell you, I have so many other candy things sitting on my hard drive waiting to be written about that its insane. I have a strange fascination with the various candy containers from the 80's and 90's. I have 8 Alf Candy dispensers that are supposedly valued at $8 a piece!

It's always surprising to me to see what strikes a chord with people. In every article I write there's one thing that I think people will just be overjoyed to see and then the thing they are overjoyed about ends up being something else! This time around, I can't believe noone remembers T2 Meltdowns.

Oh man ChokerZ99, one year I put some makeup on my face to make it look like I had some ghastly wound and that stuff was PAINFUL to tear off my skin at the end of the night. It was like super glue that had adhered to my cheeks. Ugh, I'll never forget that.
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
when you said "forget about it, blood would be spilled," i laughed so hard. every year on halloween we'd all go trick-or-treating and fill up those big paper sacks you'd get at an Albertson's or other grocery stores with tons of candy. we'd fill up at least 4 paper sacks to the brim. then, at the end of the night, we'd at least get into one fight over candy that got spilled. that's why i laughed when i read that. if you haven't fought over candy on halloween with your friends, you're not trying hard enough!
by the way, the Freddie makeup you could get took forever to put on and forever to get off. bleh, bad idea.
as for the halloween shows, A Disney Halloween Treat was a tradition in our house, as was the Halloween Tree.
Berzerker Posted 5 years 7 months ago
nice job as always.lots of good halloween memories in there
borkumriff Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Great to see the Garfield Halloween Special and The Great Pumpkin on the list! I still watch those every year! Another couple I might add to the list are Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with Bing Crosby and Halloween Is Grinch Night.
havokric Posted 5 years 7 months ago
oh holy crap.... i cant belive i had forgoten about mc d's baskets.... those were the coolest..... i remember being so scared the first time i saw the pirates going after garfield under the counter... and if it weren't for charlie brown, i dont think i would know what time of year it was, this awesome piece made me register here just so i could comment.
    theguilty1 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Ah, yes...Garbage candy! I was just trying to explain that to my wife. I kept the garbage can that the candy came in for a long time, as well as the casket Mr. Bones candy came in.
Spottedfeather Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Great article. I also remember that every year, my aunt and uncle would give all of us several books of those little coupons that let you get free sundaes or other little treats. I wish they still had those !
    JLAJRC2 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I think it was a law that every kid on the planet had at least one of those McDonald's pails. :)
Chronobrain Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Halloween-related things were always a favorite of mine growing up. I loved the supernatural. I ate up those cheesy Halloween specials from those days.

Remember Welcome Freshmen's promo on Nickelodeon that they continued airing every Halloween, even after they canceled Welcome Freshmen? Good times.
    snkreed99 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I love you article!!!!! I mis all the halloween specials that came on when we were kids. I am only a year or so older than you, so your articles really hit home!

Alright! Another Retro Machine article! Nice Halloween edition! I totally remembered those McDonald's Halloween pails! As for the classic Halloween TV specials, another one that I think we should all remember is "The Halloween that Almost Wasn't".
